Remains Spoiler Time
Tumblr media
The Boy!
The little red blot on the cover says this is the final chapter of the Remains serialization (not sure if they mean this chapter chapter or this arc).
They're trying to solve a locked room murder, which a significant amount of the time are "weren't actually dead until the door opened," but we'll see.
This is almost entirely Sherlock and Greggson talking so far, and it is interminable.
I'm thinking about why the pacing of The Remains seems kind of off, and it's probably because none of these stories really do anything character-wise, but it's also just so much talking without any action.
In this case, the talking isn't even especially revealing of characters; it feels like going through the motions to get the important information out.
Lestrade assigned Sherlock and Greggson to work together to solve the crime while he placates the angry neighbors.
They're stunned and horrified, but let's be real: neither of those two have any social skills at all. So. Y'know.
Sherlock's missing John hard right now and imagining John encouraging him in his mind. So. Some food for timeskip thoughts.
Sherlock, because he has at least 500 brain cells fixated on Liam at all times: Is the Lord of Crime involved? But Why?
Sherlock is back to imagining what John would say
They're so cute. I love their friendship.
Greggson just followed the same logic fake John did.
Okay, well, this going to be continued next month, so I guess this means "last arc" of the remains--maybe with next month; I don't know.
Guess there's no Sherliam fun in this. Ah, well.

In the anime, William says “it’s my loss, Sherly.” And then immediately cuts Sherlock’s arm so that he will let go of him.
In the manga, before he cuts Sherlock, he says “Live on and atone for my sins, you say? There might have been such a future… but now it seems like fate won’t show me any mercy[*]… That scaffold cannot possibly support this much weight…”
Sherlock tells him “throw away the damn sword… and use both hands to grab mine,” to which he responds “The only one I wish to have return home alive… is you”. And then he cuts Sherlock.
And although it may not seem like it, I think this difference greatly changes the meaning of William’s intended final actions.
In the anime, William forced Sherlock to let go of him to ensure/hasten his own death, getting the final word despite admitting that Sherlock did beat him in the end.
In the manga, William forced Sherlock to let go because he knew that Sherlock wouldn’t let go on his own even if it meant the bridge giving out and them both falling to their deaths. He cut him not because he wanted to die, but because he wanted Sherlock to live.
*I’ve also thought a lot about how this line almost feels like William regretting not being able to live to see the future he set in motion the way Sherlock is trying to persuade him to. As if maybe Sherlock had given him a tiny spark of desire to live on, but he can see that there is no longer a way for Sherlock to pull him back up onto the bridge without their combined weight dooming both of them.

Durham vs Brooklyn and how the growing closeness and comfort between them is visually represented by how they sit at tables
The tables are about the same size but in Brooklyn their chairs are pulled in much closer, Sherlock is leaning onto the table itself instead of leaning back and William isn't tucking his feet under his seat as much as before, sitting perfectly straight
The result is that instead of the table serving as a barrier like in Durham their feet are now right next to each other, possibly even tangling under the table (it's hard to tell at this angle), just like they're now on the exact same page, moving through life together instead of one chasing the other
It's a small thing but it proves that yes, Sherlock really did catch William.

So a friend of mine in the Letters From Watson Discord once said that you can separate a significant portion of Holmes adaptations into whether or not the creator thinks Watson, Moriarty, or Irene Adler is the love of Holmes’s life, and my first thought was “Moriarty the Patriot is the only one brave enough to say the answer is all three at once”

Oh my god, the flirting … always the damn flirting. They’re so playing footsie here I can feel it in my soul.
Tumblr media
And BILLYYYY
Tumblr media
The way Sherlock immediately gets up from the table with a clatter just bloody confirms it. And look how pissed off he is that their flirty coffee date got interrupted 🤣 the sweat drop and grimace and clipped words.
Oh Jesus. Help.

Manga panels that break my heart
Tumblr media
What is that expression William? You look equal parts delighted and terrified.
In a colloquial sense, you seem manic.
And I know where this is going...but I feel for him so much here.
I also feel for Louis who is looking on, who is being pulled into this scheme, whose only answer to his concern is that it's time to eliminate some more devils before the end finally comes. Who is literally present for this panel, who has to digest what this expression means, and probably suppress reacting to it with his true feelings.
Louis didn't want William's name in the papers...but William decided it would be and Louis says nothing. Louis is terrified of Holmes and William is...THIS. And again Louis can do nothing. Louis says nothing.
William is allowed to be concerned for Louis...but Louis isn't allowed to have these concerns back.
😭😭😭😭

loveee how william reads a letter that sherlock and billy will be outnumbered, and he’s just like “well, my presence will balance it out” instead of gathering more men? 😭

Listen I am going absolutely batsh*t feral over how
“Stop. Give me your hand. I am your friend.”
“I fear to stain your clothes with blood.”
“Stain them, I don't care.”
the bridge scene in the last episode of Moriarty the Patriot is
William is very much afraid that he will ruin Sherlock with the blood he has spilled, he is his rival, the hero he handpicked for his masterpiece and he was so shocked when Sherlock killed Milverton and he’s convinced that means he’ll kill him too and while he longs to be proper friends with Sherlock he can’t conceive of a present where it works out for them
Give me your hand. I am your friend. (I will not let you die like this, not alone) “Liam, take my hand and live.”
I fear to stain your clothes with blood. (I can only bring you down with me) “You’re mad, why would you try to save me?”
Stain them, I don’t care. (You’re more valuable than that/there is already blood on my hands/you could not deter me if you tried) “Isn’t it clear? Because, William Moriarty, you are my friend.”
And William still pushes him away. And Sherlock still jumps after him. And they restart.
Liam feels understood by Sherlock, but he doesn’t see how flexible Sherlock’s moral code is. Sherlock is so people-oriented, he protects the people he cares about to the extent of murder and blackmail and espionage. Why would he not also overlook those? Liam is his friend, so he will fight for him. Even Louis, who was never much of a fan of Sherlock, cedes that he is probably the only one who could save William

Moriarty Remains
I was slightly worried when this chapter opened with more Helena wrap up, but LOOK WHO IT IS!!!
Tumblr media
Pretty jerk is back
William: The final touches remain
Me: Siiiigh, can we just focus on pretty boy with the too-short pants?
Seriously you can see his entire slutty ankles
The tag line today is like, "Cool-headed thinking to capture the true nature of blazing inferno."
I love it. It's very Sherly. It's very them. It's very Motif-y.
Hudson: My heart goes out to your future wife, Sherlock
Sherlock: I'm married to my job
William: It's true, I'm his job
And now the building where the last criminal who attacked the department store was holing up is on fire. *squints at William*
There's an interesting bit where they're rushing to put out the fire and Gregson shows up, but he doesn't have time to fight with Sherlock, because: fire, and it reminds me of The Final Problem
The criminal is now dead.
And there's Liam's silhouette in the flames
Tumblr media
Sherlock: Only mysteries keep me alive
Me: WE KNOW.

So I was looking at the manga to post this reply, and I noticed something about William’s eyes as he falls from the bridge. This could just be me reaching and looking for symbolism where there isn’t any but… what’s the point in being obsessed with something if you’re not going to make possibly wildly inaccurate interpretations of it, right?
When he cuts Sherlock’s arm (thoughts about that here), we see William’s left eye.
Tumblr media
Then when he sees Sherlock jumping after him we see his right eye.
Tumblr media
The left eye is the one we see when Sherlock is reaching for him: (this is also the last time we see William’s left eye until the Bench Scene)
Tumblr media
And then we see the right when he catches him:
Tumblr media
And it’s his right eye that we see close peacefully after Sherlock says they both need to live:
Tumblr media
So it seems like his left eye symbolizes his desire to die, and his right eye symbolizes his desire to live. His left eye gets damaged, but he no longer wants to die and chooses to live on.

Okay, I just watched Moriarty the Patriot recently and been obsessed with them(as I’m sure you can tell considering I liked every fic you had of them😜) Anyway! I was thinking of the reunion. We know William survive, but he lives in Switzerland and we know Sherlock moves out there with him as well. So, the Moriarty brothers, James Bonde(Irene Adler), Fred, Moran, and Jack goes to Switzerland and they see William and Sherlock and after the tears and words that haven’t been said that are finally spoken they have a they have a tickle fight.
{Headcanons to Dabbles: CLOSED!}
JEJRJERJEKJRJKE YESH! I love this so much alrkaejrajkej This kinda turned into "Let's wreck William- the dabble" but like- the tickle fight elements are in there! I hope you like it friend :3
William hadn’t realized how hollow he felt until he was in the arms of his brothers once more.
Louis’ wet voice saying his name, Albert’s arms strong and steady- the dull ache in his chest was finally starting to ease as he breathed them in, barely fighting off his own tears as he squeezed them close. “I’ve missed you…I’ve missed you all so much. Welcome home.”
Around him, he heard movement- Moran barely hiding a sniffle while Bonde bumped him gently, Fred offering his assistance to Sherlock as they carried in bags. Soon though, it was just them once more; three brothers no longer separated.
“Come now- let’s go in before we catch our deaths out here.” Albert was the first to pull away, shivering as the cold air cut through his jacket.
“Have you been well? You’re thinner than last time I’ve seen you.” Louis noted, hand already out and squeezing William’s side. “You’ve been eating, yes?”
“Ah-Yes, yes I ha-have! Louis!” William caught the investigative hand, pulling it away gently from his waist. “Please!”
“Forgive me brother- just worried.” Despite the apology, Louis was smiling, sharing a look with Albert across his shoulder. Oh dear- this wasn’t going to end well.
~~~
Sometimes, William hated how right he was.
“L-Louis, really! I’m fine, I promise!” He scooted back further in his seat against the couch, hands held up as his brother approached. “There’s no need to interrogate me further!”
“Who said anything about interrogating? I just haven’t heard you laugh in such a long time. Neither of us had, right Albert?” Louis turned to their eldest brother, nodding once.
“But of course, Louis. I for one missed our dear brother smiling and laughing. The last time we’ve all seen one another- well, you were quite the character.” The brunette moved quickly, snatching up William’s wrists with ease, pulling them up and out of the way. “I don’t fault you for it- but I would prefer my next big memory of you in mirthful tears, not pained ones. Ready?”
“Ready!”
“Oh no- don’t you da-ahahhhahahahre!” William all but broke when Louis grabbed his sides, tapping against them with rapid speed. He’d gotten better at tickling in their time apart. “Lohohohoohuis, pleahhahahhahahse!”
“There it is! That’s the look we’ve been longing to see.” Louis giggled softly, easily switching from tapping to pinching and further sending William into giggly hysterics. “It’s so refreshing to hear it, don’t you agree?”
Albert was quiet, watching William laugh with the fondest of expressions. When his voice wouldn’t work, he simply smiled, alternating his grip so he could hold William’s wrists with one hand and tickle him with the other.
“Ah! Nohohohohot youhuohohohu twohohohooho! Alhahhahahahhalbehehehehhert!” William could barely speak, flustered and breathless. He was happy though- it was clear as day on his face as his brothers drew out every once of laughter he buried away for so long.
“What a sight to see, wouldn’t you agree?” Hidden just out of view by  the doorway, Moran grinned at Bonde, arms folded across his chest. “Hadn’t seen that sight in awhile.”
“Yes. It’s lovely.” They nodded, equally moved by the nostalgic sight. For a moment, they stood there taking it all in. Then…
“Shall we go get Fred? Give him a similar treatment?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”
