The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Saturday 5th May 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. Stars greeted Bella and I as we left the house twinkling high in the early morning night sky reminding us how small we really are, the wind was just a whisper and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine filled the air, all is back to normal in Estepona by the sea......
PAEDOPHILE WHO HAD NEARLY 2,000 CHILD ABUSE IMAGES WALKS OUT OF COURT ON BAIL…. Christopher Blakesly, 26, from Elgin, admitted having the haul of pictures and videos when he appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday. According to The Press and Journal, prosecutors described the grim images, which included an 18-month-old boy in a dog cage and a two-year-old being sexually abused. Fiscal depute Kevin Corrins said the toddler could be heard to say “it hurt” but was ignored by the person committing the offence. In total, police found 1,651 pictures and 67 videos on a mobile phone seized from Blakesly after he was arrested at his work. Blakesly, of Meadow Crescent in Elgin, pleaded guilty to a single charge of possessing indecent or pseudo photographs of children between June 17 and July 4 last year. He was bailed and concealed his face as he left court.
ROAD BAN FOR DUNDEE WOMAN FOUND NEARLY SIX TIMES OVER DRINK DRIVE LIMIT…. A woman who drove her car while almost six times the alcohol limit was placed on a community payback order under supervision for 20 months. Carol Clark, 46, of Sherbrook Crescent, admitted that she drove with excess alcohol (127 mics) at Derwent Avenue on December 11 last year. Sheriff John Rafferty also ordered her to complete 130 hours of unpaid work and granted her leave to apply for the drink-driver’s rehabilitation course. She was banned for 25 months.
GLASGOW WOMEN'S LIBRARY IN RUNNING FOR £100,000 NATIONAL MUSEUM AWARD…. GLASGOW'S Women's Library has been short listed for the prestigious Museum of the Year award. Five museums are in the running for the £100,000 prize, including the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, the Ferens Art Gallery in JUll, the Postal Museum in London and Tate St Ives. This year’s jury is chaired by Stephen Deuchar, director of the Art Fund, who said: "Above all, Art Fund Museum of the Year is a prize for exceptional originality and innovation. "Each of our five finalists has tapped into very current concerns: the progress of Glasgow Women’s Library exemplifies the quickening march towards equality; the Postal Museum addresses our first social network; Brooklands is inspiring the next generation of engineers; and the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull and Tate St Ives are galvanising their communities around visual culture. "Each one expands the very idea of what a museum can be. I would encourage everyone to see and experience them first-hand." Glasgow Women’s Library is the UK's only accredited museum dedicated to women’s history.
MOVE TO GIVE CASH MACHINES IN SCOTLAND LEGAL PROTECTION AS THOUSANDS FACE AXE…. Communities in remote parts of Scotland will feel the “devastating impact” of ATMs disappearing from the High Street amid fears nearly half will be closed over a funding row. It has emerged Scotland will become one of the the worst affected parts of the UK as proposals are lodged to reduce fees for card machine operators which is set to sound the death knell on thousands of ‘hole-in-the-wall’ machines. The news comes amid talk of a ‘High Street crisis’ as town centres struggle to remain vibrant following contractions to bus services and declining number of bank branches. There are concerns particularly for the elderly in rural areas, who have lost their local post office and rely on cash machines to draw their pensions. The concerns come as the fee LINK, the UK‟s largest cash machine network, receives from banks per transaction is to be cut from 25p to 20p from July. It has led to worries that more than half of Scotland's 5300 free-to-use ATMS could disappear.
HOME OFFICE ADMITS ‘ERROR’ IN VOLHA MERRY DEPORTATION CASE…. The Home Office has admitted that officials made a mistake when a woman from North Lanarkshire was threatened with deportation. Volha Merry was told that she could be deported back to Belarus if she did not leave the UK in early April. But the case was later paused and reviewed. Now an immigration minister has admitted the deportation notice was issued in “error”. Mrs Merry’s case will be assessed to establish whether she has a case for residency. The admission comes after weeks of chaos and controversy for the Home Office over the Windrush generation and immigration targets. A number of politicians intervened in Mrs Merry’s case, including Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish Government’s External Affairs Secretary, and Hugh Gaffney, Labour MP for Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill. In a letter to Mr Gaffney, immigration minister Caroline Noakes apologised for the mistake and said: “Mrs Merry applied for permission to appeal the Upper Tribunal Immigration and Asylum Chamber on 10 January 2018 and 8 March 2018; both applications were refused. “Following this refused application, Mrs Merry was served with an enforcement notice, advising her of the liability to removal from the UK on 4 April. The Home Office apologises for issuing this notice in error; it will now be withdrawn and the reporting conditions set upon Mrs Merry will be cancelled.” Mrs Merry married Scot Derek Merry in Belarus five years ago and they have a two-year-old daughter. As Belarus is not in the European Economic Area (EEA), the couple moved to Ireland so they could become EEA residents. This paved the way for Mrs Merry to be entitled to a UK residence card. While in Ireland, Mrs Merry became pregnant and the couple returned to Scotland where she gave birth to daughter Milana in 2016. Mr Gaffney said: “The important thing is that this Coatbridge family will not be broken up, however this error suggests a horrifying level of either incompetence or indifference in the Home Office. “This family chose to make Coatbridge their home. “While it is wonderful news that they will remain together, something is clearly rotten in the Home Office. I have tabled questions to the immigration minister asking for a review to be conducted on how many of these bogus notices have been issued.”
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is of a beautiful view of Pittenweem taken by Gordon Coutts during an East Neuk trip down memory lane for his parents.

"The Railway Inn is a friendly and traditional village pub and has been an established public house in Lower Largo, Fife, since 1749. The current owners, Alistair and Oormi, took over in December 2013. Situated near the East Neuk section of the Fife Coastal Path, it is a firm favourite with ramblers, dog walkers and locals alike.   A great selection of draught beers are on offer from traditional Scottish beers such as Tennents Lager and Belhaven Best to some new world lagers such as Asahi and Carlsberg alongside classics like Guinness and Strongbow. In addition, there are five Scottish guest ales available which are updated on a weekly basis. Our ales come from all over Scotland from Orkney to the Borders Brewery as well as from local Eden Mill Brewery in Guardbridge. We also offer a selection of over 25 Malt Whiskies as well as a selection of the popular Eden Mill gin from just up the road. Bar snacks are also available.   Sky Sports and BT Sport show live sporting action on a regular basis. There is a private beer garden to the rear of the pub with a sheltered and heated smoking area. There are also picnic benches at the front of the property where you can catch the evening sunshine. Dogs are welcome and children are allowed in the pub until 8pm."

"Tae Sup wi’ a Fifer – Hosted and programmed by East Neuk songwriter & author James Yorkston: Scott Hutchison (frightened Rabbit) / Serafina Steer / Alasdair Roberts   Scott Hutchison is the lead singer of Scottish indie-rock band Frightened Rabbit, though he occasionally steps out of the woods to perform as Owl John. He has been making music with Frightened Rabbit for over a decade and the band have released five albums during that time.   Serafina Steer is a fascinating and unique singer / songwriter. As a classically trained harpist, she works in contemporary, improvised, collaborative and pop projects, including Bas Jan, her all-female post-punk-esque trio.   Alasdair Roberts is a songwriter/composer, singer and acoustic fingerstyle guitarist as well as an interpreter/arranger of traditional songs and ballads from Scotland and beyond."

"Take a step back in time and see this historic and well known building like never before.   This is one of the final chances to visit the Kings Theatre Kirkcaldy and hear the history and see it right in front of you before all the big work starts to bring it back to its former glory.   Over the past 15 months, the Kings Team have been working away, clearing the site and unearthing some amazing original pieces of the building, that dates back to 1904, when it first opened as the Kings Theatre before it closed in 2000, known then as the ABC Cinema.   These tours have proven hugely popular, with the team already having welcomed well over 800 people through the doors, some with no idea the building was there, some who have years of fond memories and almost all who knew nothing of its amazing history and status as a 2000 seater live performance theatre in the heart of Kirkcaldy.   Tour numbers are limited and anybody under the age of 16 must be with an adult over 18. There is an age restriction in place for these tours and it is strictly for over 7 years of age.   Please arrive at The Kings Hub 10 min before your tour to sign in."
See more from the original source, here...     There you have it for another week, soon we'll be into the festive party season!  If you're looking for some new jewellery for a party or as a present, pop along to our jewellers on Kirkcaldy High Street and we'll be sure to help you out with something unique and fits right in with your style.   As a disclaimer, we are not affiliated with any of these pubs, restaurants or gigs/shows that we have in our guides. You are responsible for yourself, have fun whatever you get up to!  Be careful on that ice!!
