As for Skarsgård’s chiseled and menacingly inked-up “dude with the dragon tattoo” look in the second half of the film (see photo of him standing in front of a mirror), Sanders says that his inspiration was less cribbed from O’Barr’s graphic novel or Lee’s previous incarnation than from his own life. “I think the beauty of Bill is that he has a disturbing beauty, and as he transforms through his loss he becomes this thing that even he can’t control. The core message of the original film is literally "it can't rain all the time." They practically beat you over the head with it. He's not a man destroyed by grief who becomes a monster in life. He's literally pulled from the grave by the spirit of vengeance so he can defeat a specific evil and go on to his eternal rest in peace. There's no "becoming a monster."

If you think Eric was a monster, you watched the wrong fucking movie. It's dark and tragic, yes. He's very menacing and creepy, sure. But he's a superhero at his core, fighting evil. Blatant evil. Gang members who gleefully violated his fiance before killing her and the mobster who ordered both of their deaths.

What's next? Are they going to soften Top Dollar to make him a "sympathetic" villain? Turn him into some pathetic real estate bro played by Michael Cera? Change his name to "Johnny Smith" and the only thing left will be his ad slogan is "With me your sale gets top dollar."

I'm fine with remakes in general, so long as they either keep with the spirit of the original or make a bad thing better. Some of my favorite movies are remakes because they did a good fucking job. The bastard in charge of this project has already shown he doesn't give two shits about the original movie OR the comic its based on. He's just going to wipe his ass with the originals so he can use the name as leverage ot make money.

Also those tatoos look fucking stupid. They look like he fell alseep drunk and someone drew on him with a sharpie. Properly designed tattoos are supposed to flow with the lines of the body, not just be slapped on scattershot.

I just learned about this. All I know is what's in that article, and there's already dozens of severe red flags. I'm so damn furious.

FilmNation sells out on ‘The Crow’ reboot in Cannes (exclusive)

The Crow reboot package lived up to pre-market expectations and proved to be a standout from FilmNation’s packed Cannes slate as heavyweight international buyers snapped up rights to the upcoming revenge thriller.

Bill Skarsgård from the It franchise and Deadpool 2 will star alongside British singer-songwriter FKA twigs for Rupert Sanders, whose directing credits include Snow White And The Huntsman, Ghost In The Shell and Foundation. Sanders will direct from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, the Oscar-nominated writer of King Rchard and the upcoming Creed III.

Closed deals include Entertainment Film for the UK, Leonine for Germany, Roadshow Films for Australia and New Zealand, Eagle for Italy, Nordisk for Scandinavia, California Filmes for Latin America, Tri Pictures for Spain, and Moviecloud for Taiwan.

In further trading, rights have gone for Middle East (Italia), Eastern Europe (Vertical), Benelux (WWE), Thailand (M Pictures), Malaysia (Square Box), Singapore (Shaw), Portugal (Pris), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Greece (Tanweer), South Africa (Empire), India (PVR), Turkey (Yeni Bir), and Baltics (Acme).

Production is anticipated to begin in Europe this summer on the reimagining of the cult character based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel. Alex Proyas directed the 1994 feature version about a man who returns from the dead to avenge his murder and that of his fiancée.

Producers are Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida – whose Metropolitan will distribute The Crow in France – as well as John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman, who produced the 1994 original. CAA Media Finance represents US rights.

Sanders is represented by CAA, Grandview and Independent Talent Group. Skarsgard is represented by WME, Magnolia Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein. FKA twigs is represented by UTA.

FilmNation’s Cannes slate includes Vatican conspiracy thriller Conclave to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini; Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Djimon Hounsou in diver thriller Last Breath; Michael Keaton starring in and directing the noir Knox Goes Away; and Paul Greengrass-Benedict Cumberbatch peasant revolt drama The Hood.

As previously reported Apple snapped up worldwide rights during the market to sci-fi romance package Fingernails starring Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley.

The Crow (1994)

 Some movies are remembered as much for tragic accidents that occurred during their making as they are for the films, themselves. Sadly, the superb 1994 film, “The Crow” is probably best-known to those who haven’t actually seen it for the tragic on-set accident involving an improperly-loaded stunt gun.  Star Brandon Lee was struck by a projectile fired from the gun and later died. Lee’s role was mostly done. The rest was achieved through body doubles and digital effects.

 “The Crow” was based on the graphic novel by James O’Barr. Lee plays Eric Draven, a musician who had planned to marry his fiance, Shelly (played by Canadian actress, Sofia Shinas) on Halloween. The night before, “Devil’s Night”, they’re killed by a vicious gang working for their wannabe crime boss, Top Dollar, played by Michael Wincott. As the police survey the scene, Officer Albrecht (Ernie Hudson) consoles a young girl named Sarah(Rochelle Davis), thinking she’s related to the couple, but she tells him, “Shelly just takes care of me.”

 Cut to a year later at the cemetery where Eric and Shelly are buried. Sarah brings flowers and encounters a crow (actually a raven). When she leaves, the bird pecks on the tombstone and Eric comes back from the dead. Not even sure why he’s there or what he’s supposed to do, Draven is led back to his old apartment by the crow and memories from the things he touches tell him what happened and what he needs to do. By accident, he realizes that he’s invincible after cutting his hands on broken glass and they immediately heal. There were some scenes shot with Michael Berryman who plays the Skull Cowboy who is supposed to lay out to Draven what he can and can’t do. None of those scenes made the final cut. I think it was decided that Draven should find out these things on his own.

 Draven systematically tracks down his killers, with help from the crow after finding out where they all are from a pawn shop owner who had his engagement ring. Draven blows up the pawn shop and encounters the original officer from his case. A looter, played by James O’Barr in a VERY small cameo diverts his attention and Draven is gone. Eric later shows up at Albrecht’s apartment to fill in the blanks about what happened to them, which is very important at the end of the film.

 The movie and the accident that killed Brandon Lee are inextricably linked. There’s a sadness that permeates the film. This was Lee’s breakout role. He was best-known for a couple of TV series and low-budget action films and of course being Bruce Lee’s son. He definitely was going to be a star. His performance was superb. Michael Wincott as Top Dollar was a memorable villain. (Check him out in a much different role in Oliver Stone’s 1988 film, “Talk Radio.) Veteran character actor Ernie Hudson is great as Draven’s sympathetic police officer who helps him out. Veteran music video director Alex Proyas gives the film a gothed-out look and sound. Great soundtrack featuring The Cure, Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots.

Onyx Path will develop a tabletop RPG called Legendlore RPG based on Caliber Comics’ long-running fantasy comic book series The Realm and Legendlore.

Remembering THE CROW (’94) by Susan Doll

As super hero films clean up at the multiplexes, I cringe at how such uninspired, colorless CGI-fests could do so well at the box office. But, don’t get me wrong. Despite this remark, and others I have made in the past, I don’t dislike the comic book genre. I dislike what it has become under the iron grips of Marvel and DC and their devotion to a single demographic.

I can single out favorites in the genre going all the way back to THE BAT (’26), a silent film directed by Roland West that was likely an influence on Batman creator Bill Kane. Speaking of Batman, I greatly admire Tim Burton’s interpretations of the brooding, cowled superhero in BATMAN (’89) and BATMAN RETURNS (’92). I also like Christopher Nolan’s reboot of the Batman character, though I prefer Burton’s. One of my all-time favorite comic book films, THE CROW (’94), is currently streaming on FilmStruck. What all these films share in common is an understanding of the artistic aesthetic of the original source material—a stripped-down, graphic quality that exploits angles, lighting and composition. These films are dependent on mise-en-scène, a traditional cinematic technique referring to the look and feel of a film controlled by the director, production designer and cinematographer. Further, the directors of these older comic book films knew and appreciated the visual language and symbolism of cinematic mise-en-scène, which is based in German Expressionism. On the other hand, the most recent examples are awash in computer-generated imagery (CGI), giving them a brassy, hollow look that makes many of them indistinguishable from each other.

THE CROW was based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel, a darkly romantic tale of violence, poetry and rock ‘n’ roll. Brandon Lee, son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, stars as Eric Draven, lead singer in a rock band. Eric and his girlfriend, Shelly (Sofia Shinas), plan to marry on Halloween, but on the night before—called Devil’s Night in the Midwest—they are brutally murdered by a gang of thugs working for Top Dollar (Michael Wincott). A year later, a crow ferries Eric from the land of the dead to seek vengeance on the men who perpetrated the double homicide.

Director Alex Proyas amplified the novel’s melancholy tone with one of the darkest visual designs I have ever seen. Every scene is shot in high-contrast or low-key lighting; there isn’t one shot rendered in high-key lighting. The lack of gray scale recalls the graphic nature of comic books and graphic novels but also gives depth and richness to the images. The darks are not merely negative space but pools of shadows that seem to sculpt the buildings and alleyways that make up Proyas’s version of Detroit. THE CROW was cinematographer Dariusz Wolski’s second feature film after a decade of music videos and commercials. Born in Poland, he attended the renowned National Film School in Lodz, which specializes in acting, directing and cinematography. His talent for expressive lighting and striking imagery is evident in the films of directors who have consistently sought out his skills, including Gore Verbinski in his PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (’03, ’06, ’07) trilogy and Ridley Scott.

Web commentators have compared the visual style to film noir, a valid comparison because THE CROW is a dystopic interpretation of the big city. The corruption associated with the urban world in noir is magnified tenfold in THE CROW: Nothing is left in the city but decay, decadence, and drugs. There is no art, no culture, no refinement. The large Gothic church that anchors the neighborhood is empty of both priests and parishioners. Only a hot-dog stand frequented by the last good cop in Detroit looks inviting, with its warm interior lighting and rich colors. THE CROW was produced and released in the early 1990s. By this time, the inner-city decay that had begun in the 1970s had turned into urban blight. The film reflects a widespread negative view of the big city just before a return to urban centers began to restore neighborhoods and focus attention on urban growth and renewal. No city was more affected by urban blight than Detroit; it’s very name was synonymous with a dystopic view of the inner city. Proyas and production designer Alex McDowell played on that reputation by offering a hellish interpretation of Detroit, where burning buildings constantly lit up the night sky.

THE CROW makes effective use of German Expressionist symbolism, adding considerably to a film in which dialogue is minimal and characters speak in melancholy phrases of portent or despair. The first image of Eric Draven is a bird’s-eye view of his dead body splayed on the sidewalk, a hint that fate or God is looking down and has something else in store for him. Visual clues of Draven’s doppelganger status are in most of his scenes. A doppelganger means a character has two sides to him; in this case, Draven is both living and dead. His large shadow is cast on the alley wall as he stumbles through the streets after rising from the grave; it is a literal depiction of his “dark side.” Close-ups reveal his face half lit and half in shadow. Most telling is the shot when Eric looks into a mirror, seeing his dark side for the first time. He cracks the mirror with his fist, distorting his reflected image. Draven’s abandoned, dilapidated apartment, which he shared with Shelly, looks like a set straight out of THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (’19). Bars and bar shadows tell us that Eric is trapped in his fate; collapsed beams and destroyed furniture created a set design filled with diagonals and sharp shapes, reflect the chaos and instability of Eric’s twisted mind. That kind of direct connection between set design and narrative is missing from many contemporary superhero films, in which producers are more concerned with the bells and whistles of CGI than effective visual storytelling.

Older readers will recall that THE CROW was notorious because of the accidental death of Brandon Lee on set. The exact account of what happened is available to read in detail online: The short version is that a prop gun with a partial live round was accidentally used in the scene in which Eric Draven is shot. In a horrible version of art imitating life, Brandon Lee was shot dead in the scene in which his fictional character was shot dead. The film was near completion, with only a few production days left on the schedule. The producers decided to complete and release the film, using an early version of CGI to meld Lee’s face onto a stunt double’s body for the one scene that could not be rewritten. Lee was just beginning his career in action-driven films, revealing the charm and charisma of a bona fide movie star. THE CROW would have likely propelled him into superstardom and elevated him out of the shadow of his famous father. If ever a film was haunted by the performance of its star, THE CROW is it.

But, that was decades ago. Younger viewers are likely unfamiliar with Brandon Lee and the circumstances of his death. Ultimately, that tragic event does not weigh as heavily on the film like it once did. THE CROW stands on its own as a beautifully crafted comic book film with a heavy atmosphere, moody mise-en-scène and a serious treatment of the material.

14 Películas que están inspiradas en cómics y no son de superhéroes

La letanía de personajes nacidos en cómics y llevados al cine es larga, y cada vez más numerosa: ejemplos de eso son Los Vengadores, X-Men, Batman y Superman, por nombrar solo algunos de los más populares. Aunque lo primero que te venga a la comienzo al escuchar sobre historietas sean seres disfrazados y con poderes especiales, el mundo de los cómics es más diverso de lo que parece a simple instinto, y incluso ha inspirado la vídeo de películas que para ausencia están centradas en superhéroes.

Con la intención de sorprenderte, Genial.guru recopiló una letanía de algunas cintas que posiblemente no sabías están basadas en novelas gráficas.

1. Hombres de Negro

Un familia de agentes secretos vigila la actividad extraterrestre y paranormal en la Tierra. Casi que no hace equivocación aclarar que esa es la trama sobre la que se desarrolla Hombres de Negro, franquicia que tiene una trilogía protagonizada por Will Smith y Tommy Lee Jones, por otra parte de una última película con un reparto totalmente nuevo.

Las cintas están basadas en el cómic Los hombres de sombrío, creado por Lowell Cunningham y publicado entre 1990 y 1991. Entre esta idea flamante y la aclimatación cinematográfica hay varias diferencias: una de las principales es que la estructura para la que trabajan los agentes no es tan heroica como se muestra en las cintas, sino un organismo de dudosa casto que gobierna el mundo.

2. Los locos Addams

Los locos Addams fueron los protagonistas de tres películas con actores de carne y hueso, una de animación por computadora, un software de televisión que se emitió entre 1964 y 1966, y una caricatura transmitida en la plazo del 90. Pero su primera aparición fue en una serie de cómics que se publicó en la revista The New Yorker a partir de 1938.

Su creador fue el caricaturista estadounidense Charles Addams, quien incluso le dio su patronímico a esta particular grupo que combinaba el humor con lo sombrío,. De su comienzo surgieron los personajes principales: la pareja integrada por Homero y Morticia; sus hijos, Merlina y Pericles; el tío Lucas, Largo, el tío Cosa y Dedos.

3. El Cuervo

La película El Cuervo alcanzó una triste notoriedad antiguamente de su estreno en 1994, conveniente a que, durante su rodaje, el protagonista, Brandon Lee, murió al ser disparado de forma accidental durante una cuadro. Recibió una bala de verdad que había quedado atascada, en división de una de fogueo, y todo conveniente a una serie de hechos poco afortunados que tuvieron como principal explicación la equivocación de presupuesto.

La cinta incluso se volvió de culto por su cuadrilla sonora, la cual incluye canciones de reconocidas bandas como The Cure y Stone Temple Pilots. Pero menos conocido es el antecedente que esta historia surgió desde un cómic: fue el intérprete James O’Barr quien, en 1989, publicó por primera vez esta historia de venganza sobre un hombre que es asesinado y resucita gracias a la ayuda de un misterioso cuervo.

4. Cómo perder a un hombre en 10 días

Por un flanco, nos encontramos con una periodista que desea escribir un artículo titulado “Cómo perder a un hombre en 10 días”, por los que debe alejar a su pareja reproduciendo errores clásicos de las citas. Del otro, hay un publicista que le envite a su patriarca que puede enamorar a cualquier mujer en 10 días, y, si lo logra, quedará al frente de una nueva campaña. Ambos se encuentran para darle forma a esta comedia romántica.

La traducción cinematográfica llegó en 2003, con un reparto compuesto por Kate Hudson y Matthew McConaughey. Está basada en una historieta de 1998, en la que sus autoras, Michele Alexander y Jeannie Long, recopilaron algunos de esos llamados errores que debían evitarse para sobrevivir los primeros días de una relación.

5. Garfield

Le encanta tomar, pernoctar y ver televisión. Muy difícil no identificarse con Garfield, el micifuz que vive con su dueño, Jon Bónachon, y el perro Odie. Los más jóvenes posiblemente lo conocen por la película de 2004 y su secuela, estrenada en 2006, mientras que los que son un poco más mayores quizás lo recuerden de la serie de dibujos animados de principios de la plazo del 90.

Sin retención, el felino anaranjado de rayas negras y entusiasta de la lasaña existe desde 1978, aunque en formato de historieta. Su creador es Jim Davis, quien se inspiró en los más de vigésimo gatos con los que se crió de pequeño en la alquería en la que vivía, pero tomando la personalidad y el nombre de su antepasado, James A. Garfield.

6. Scott Pilgrim vs. los ex de la chica de sus sueños

La película Scott Pilgrim contra el mundo tiene muchos elementos del cómic en la ambientación de la historia, la visualización de los sonidos, y en las peleas entre el novicio protagonista y los siete exnovios malvados de su pretendiente. Esto es por una simple razón: está basada en una novelística gráfica de seis tomos que fue publicada entre 2004 y 2010.

El rodaje se realizó con la historieta aún no terminada, lo que hizo que hubiera varias diferencias entre ambas versiones, con varias subtramas que en el cine no aparecieron. Pese a eso, la cinta protagonizada por Michael Cera recibió muy buenas críticas, y dio división a que se desarrollara un videojuego con el mismo nombre.

7. Los Pitufos

La tradición de historietas franco-belga es menos reconocida que la estadounidense y la japonesa, pero de allí surgieron grandes tiras como Asterix, Tintín y Lucky Luke. También Los Pitufos, quienes aparecieron por primera vez en 1958, con tanto éxito que, al año futuro, comenzaron a protagonizar sus propios cómics.

Estas pequeñas criaturas azules que viven en lo más profundo del bosque lograron una triunfo mundial con los dibujos animados emitidos en la plazo del 80. En la última plazo se estrenaron tres películas sobre ellos, con participaciones estelares como las de Katy Perry y Demi Lovato. Los cómics siguen siendo editados: desde 1992 están a cargo de Thierry Culliford, hijo de Peyo, creador de estos personajes.

8. Kingsman

La franquicia Kingsman llegó al cine para quedarse. En 2014 salió a la luz la primera de las cintas sobre esta estructura internacional secreta que combate al crimen, y tan solo tres abriles luego se estrenó la secuela. En septiembre de 2020 llegará la tercera cinta, pero con un reparto totalmente renovado, ya que ahondará en el origen de esta asociación de espías.

La dinastía está basada en un cómic homónimo de tres volúmenes que se editó entre 2012 y 2018. Esta novelística gráfica fue escrita por Mark Millar, un autor escocés que realizó trabajos para Marvel, los cuales luego fueron adaptados al cine en películas de Los Vengadores y X-Men. Además, es el creador de Kick-Ass, otro personaje que transitó el camino desde las historietas hasta la pantalla ilustre.

9. Se sondeo

El escritor Mark Millar incluso tiene en su currículum Se sondeo, una serie limitada de seis cómics lanzados entre 2003 y 2004. La trama gira más o menos de un oficinista que suele ser acosado en el trabajo y en la vida, hasta que descubre que es el heredero del puesto que su padre tenía como un nocivo en una estructura secreta indicación “La Fraternidad”.

La historia fue adaptada al cine en la película homónima que cuenta con un equipo de suntuosidad compuesto por Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy y Morgan Freeman, entre otros grandes actores. Tras acoger críticas positivas, dos nominaciones a los Óscar en categorías vinculadas al sonido y el éxito de cobro, se planteó la idea de hacer una secuela. Sin retención, el plan fue postergado y se desconoce si efectivamente será llevado a extremidad.

10. 300

La historia de los 300 espartanos que lograron detener la invasión persa pese a ser superados en número es un importante ícono cultural: la batalla de las Termópilas es mencionada en el ámbito musical (por ejemplo, en el Himno Nacional de Colombia), y en la letras, ya que fue adaptada al mundo del cómic en 300, trabajo realizado por el argumentista y dibujante Frank Miller, y publicado en 1998.

Esa novelística gráfica fue la inspiración para la película de 2006, en la que Gerard Butler interpretó al rey Leónidas. La cinta posee colores y enseres especiales que ayudan a reproducir las imágenes de la historieta flamante. Su éxito abrió el paso para que, en 2014, se estrenara su secuela bajo el nombre de 300: El comienzo de un imperio.

11. La Máscara

La Máscara, de 1994, consagró a Jim Carrey como cómico y permitió el brinco a la triunfo de Cameron Diaz. Podrá objetarse que, en verdad, este personaje sí es un superhéroe con poderes sobrehumanos, pero claramente no es uno tradicional. Lo cierto es que la película fue un gran éxito, una de las más taquilleras en el año de su estreno, la cual incluso habilitó la creación de una serie animada.

La idea de una máscara mágica que le otorga poderes a su portador y lo convierte en una especie de personalidad de dibujos animados de carne y hueso, surgió de un cómic de finales de la plazo del 80. La historieta creada por el escritor Mike Richardson tiene un tono más sombrío que la aclimatación cinematográfica, la cual es más ligera y humorística.

12. Dick Tracy

La lucha entre el correctamente y el mal se traslada a la plazo del 30 en Dick Tracy, la película de 1990 que combina gánsteres, una ciudad sombría y un intrépido detective. Al Pacino en el rol del inculto, Warren Beaty como héroe, y Madonna, quien se encontraba en uno de los mejores momentos de su carrera como cantante, interpretando a una hermosa y peligrosa dama, le dan a esta película una calidad actoral sorprendente.

Ganadora de tres Óscar, la cinta está basada en una tira creada por el dibujante Chester Gould, la cual empezó a publicarse en el diario Chicago Tribune a partir de 1931. Su popularidad fue tan ilustre, que esta historia policial fue adaptada incluso en numerosas oportunidades en la radiodifusión, la televisión y en otras versiones cinematográficas.

13. Camino a la perdición

Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Paul Newman y Daniel Craig juntos, motivo suficiente para ver Camino a la perdición, la cinta de 2002 de Sam Mendes, el mismo director de la recientemente multipremiada 1917. Ambientada en la época del crac del 29, narra una historia de crimen organizado, asesinatos y todo lo que es capaz de hacer un padre para defender a su hijo.

La cinta está basada en la novelística gráfica homónima de 1998, creada por los artistas Max Allan Collins y Richard Piers Rayner. Esta historieta, a su vez, está influenciada por el manga El lobo solitario y su hijo, el cual incluso cuenta con una trama de venganza, pero trasladada a la época de los clanes y shogunatos en Japón.

14. Casper

Los fantasmas suelen ser aterradores, pero ese no es el caso de Casper, incluso llamado Gasparín en algunos países de Hispanoamérica. Este espectro de tamaño inmaduro y abierto con los seres humanos apareció en un texto para niños en 1939. Luego pasó a protagonizar su propia serie de dibujos animados y una popular historieta, hasta que, en 1995, pegó el brinco a la pantalla ilustre.

La película tiene como protagonistas a Bill Pullman y a una novicio Christina Ricci, y marcó el hito de ser la primera cinta en la historia en tener a un personaje principal creado enteramente mediante animación por computadora. El fantasmita apareció luego en otras producciones, la mayoría de ellas creadas especialmente para televisión.

Lo cierto es que la película fue un gran éxito, una de las más taquilleras en el año de su estreno, la cual incluso habilitó la creación de una serie animada.

La idea de una máscara mágica que le otorga poderes a su portador y lo convierte en una especie de personalidad de dibujos animados de carne y hueso, surgió de un cómic de finales de la plazo del 80. La historieta creada por el escritor Mike Richardson tiene un tono más sombrío que la aclimatación cinematográfica, la cual es más ligera y humorística.

12. Dick Tracy

La lucha entre el correctamente y el mal se traslada a la plazo del 30 en Dick Tracy, la película de 1990 que combina gánsteres, una ciudad sombría y un intrépido detective. Al Pacino en el rol del inculto, Warren Beaty como héroe, y Madonna, quien se encontraba en uno de los mejores momentos de su carrera como cantante, interpretando a una hermosa y peligrosa dama, le dan a esta película una calidad actoral sorprendente.

Ganadora de tres Óscar, la cinta está basada en una tira creada por el dibujante Chester Gould, la cual empezó a publicarse en el diario Chicago Tribune a partir de 1931. Su popularidad fue tan ilustre, que esta historia policial fue adaptada incluso en numerosas oportunidades en la radiodifusión, la televisión y en otras versiones cinematográficas.

13. Camino a la perdición

Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Paul Newman y Daniel Craig juntos, motivo suficiente para ver Camino a la perdición, la cinta de 2002 de Sam Mendes, el mismo director de la recientemente multipremiada 1917. Ambientada en la época del crac del 29, narra una historia de crimen organizado, asesinatos y todo lo que es capaz de hacer un padre para defender a su hijo.

La cinta está basada en la novelística gráfica homónima de 1998, creada por los artistas Max Allan Collins y Richard Piers Rayner. Esta historieta, a su vez, está influenciada por el manga El lobo solitario y su hijo, el cual incluso cuenta con una trama de venganza, pero trasladada a la época de los clanes y shogunatos en Japón.

14. Casper

Los fantasmas suelen ser aterradores, pero ese no es el caso de Casper, incluso llamado Gasparín en algunos países de Hispanoamérica. Este espectro de tamaño inmaduro y abierto con los seres humanos apareció en un texto para niños en 1939. Luego pasó a protagonizar su propia serie de dibujos animados y una popular historieta, hasta que, en 1995, pegó el brinco a la pantalla ilustre.

La película tiene como protagonistas a Bill Pullman y a una novicio Christina Ricci, y marcó el hito de ser la primera cinta en la historia en tener a un personaje principal creado enteramente mediante animación por computadora. El fantasmita apareció luego en otras producciones, la mayoría de ellas creadas especialmente para televisión.

14 Películas que están inspiradas en cómics y no son de superhéroes

La letanía de personajes nacidos en cómics y llevados al cine es larga, y cada vez más numerosa: ejemplos de eso son Los Vengadores, X-Men, Batman y Superman, por nombrar solo algunos de los más populares. Aunque lo primero que te venga a la comienzo al escuchar sobre historietas sean seres disfrazados y con poderes especiales, el mundo de los cómics es más diverso de lo que parece a simple instinto, y incluso ha inspirado la vídeo de películas que para ausencia están centradas en superhéroes.

Con la intención de sorprenderte, Genial.guru recopiló una letanía de algunas cintas que posiblemente no sabías están basadas en novelas gráficas.

1. Hombres de Negro

Un familia de agentes secretos vigila la actividad extraterrestre y paranormal en la Tierra. Casi que no hace equivocación aclarar que esa es la trama sobre la que se desarrolla Hombres de Negro, franquicia que tiene una trilogía protagonizada por Will Smith y Tommy Lee Jones, por otra parte de una última película con un reparto totalmente nuevo.

Las cintas están basadas en el cómic Los hombres de sombrío, creado por Lowell Cunningham y publicado entre 1990 y 1991. Entre esta idea flamante y la aclimatación cinematográfica hay varias diferencias: una de las principales es que la estructura para la que trabajan los agentes no es tan heroica como se muestra en las cintas, sino un organismo de dudosa casto que gobierna el mundo.

2. Los locos Addams

Los locos Addams fueron los protagonistas de tres películas con actores de carne y hueso, una de animación por computadora, un software de televisión que se emitió entre 1964 y 1966, y una caricatura transmitida en la plazo del 90. Pero su primera aparición fue en una serie de cómics que se publicó en la revista The New Yorker a partir de 1938.

Su creador fue el caricaturista estadounidense Charles Addams, quien incluso le dio su patronímico a esta particular grupo que combinaba el humor con lo sombrío,. De su comienzo surgieron los personajes principales: la pareja integrada por Homero y Morticia; sus hijos, Merlina y Pericles; el tío Lucas, Largo, el tío Cosa y Dedos.

3. El Cuervo

La película El Cuervo alcanzó una triste notoriedad antiguamente de su estreno en 1994, conveniente a que, durante su rodaje, el protagonista, Brandon Lee, murió al ser disparado de forma accidental durante una cuadro. Recibió una bala de verdad que había quedado atascada, en división de una de fogueo, y todo conveniente a una serie de hechos poco afortunados que tuvieron como principal explicación la equivocación de presupuesto.

La cinta incluso se volvió de culto por su cuadrilla sonora, la cual incluye canciones de reconocidas bandas como The Cure y Stone Temple Pilots. Pero menos conocido es el antecedente que esta historia surgió desde un cómic: fue el intérprete James O’Barr quien, en 1989, publicó por primera vez esta historia de venganza sobre un hombre que es asesinado y resucita gracias a la ayuda de un misterioso cuervo.

4. Cómo perder a un hombre en 10 días

Por un flanco, nos encontramos con una periodista que desea escribir un artículo titulado “Cómo perder a un hombre en 10 días”, por los que debe alejar a su pareja reproduciendo errores clásicos de las citas. Del otro, hay un publicista que le envite a su patriarca que puede enamorar a cualquier mujer en 10 días, y, si lo logra, quedará al frente de una nueva campaña. Ambos se encuentran para darle forma a esta comedia romántica.

La traducción cinematográfica llegó en 2003, con un reparto compuesto por Kate Hudson y Matthew McConaughey. Está basada en una historieta de 1998, en la que sus autoras, Michele Alexander y Jeannie Long, recopilaron algunos de esos llamados errores que debían evitarse para sobrevivir los primeros días de una relación.

5. Garfield

Le encanta tomar, pernoctar y ver televisión. Muy difícil no identificarse con Garfield, el micifuz que vive con su dueño, Jon Bónachon, y el perro Odie. Los más jóvenes posiblemente lo conocen por la película de 2004 y su secuela, estrenada en 2006, mientras que los que son un poco más mayores quizás lo recuerden de la serie de dibujos animados de principios de la plazo del 90.

Sin retención, el felino anaranjado de rayas negras y entusiasta de la lasaña existe desde 1978, aunque en formato de historieta. Su creador es Jim Davis, quien se inspiró en los más de vigésimo gatos con los que se crió de pequeño en la alquería en la que vivía, pero tomando la personalidad y el nombre de su antepasado, James A. Garfield.

6. Scott Pilgrim vs. los ex de la chica de sus sueños

La película Scott Pilgrim contra el mundo tiene muchos elementos del cómic en la ambientación de la historia, la visualización de los sonidos, y en las peleas entre el novicio protagonista y los siete exnovios malvados de su pretendiente. Esto es por una simple razón: está basada en una novelística gráfica de seis tomos que fue publicada entre 2004 y 2010.

El rodaje se realizó con la historieta aún no terminada, lo que hizo que hubiera varias diferencias entre ambas versiones, con varias subtramas que en el cine no aparecieron. Pese a eso, la cinta protagonizada por Michael Cera recibió muy buenas críticas, y dio división a que se desarrollara un videojuego con el mismo nombre.

7. Los Pitufos

La tradición de historietas franco-belga es menos reconocida que la estadounidense y la japonesa, pero de allí surgieron grandes tiras como Asterix, Tintín y Lucky Luke. También Los Pitufos, quienes aparecieron por primera vez en 1958, con tanto éxito que, al año futuro, comenzaron a protagonizar sus propios cómics.

Estas pequeñas criaturas azules que viven en lo más profundo del bosque lograron una triunfo mundial con los dibujos animados emitidos en la plazo del 80. En la última plazo se estrenaron tres películas sobre ellos, con participaciones estelares como las de Katy Perry y Demi Lovato. Los cómics siguen siendo editados: desde 1992 están a cargo de Thierry Culliford, hijo de Peyo, creador de estos personajes.

8. Kingsman

La franquicia Kingsman llegó al cine para quedarse. En 2014 salió a la luz la primera de las cintas sobre esta estructura internacional secreta que combate al crimen, y tan solo tres abriles luego se estrenó la secuela. En septiembre de 2020 llegará la tercera cinta, pero con un reparto totalmente renovado, ya que ahondará en el origen de esta asociación de espías.

La dinastía está basada en un cómic homónimo de tres volúmenes que se editó entre 2012 y 2018. Esta novelística gráfica fue escrita por Mark Millar, un autor escocés que realizó trabajos para Marvel, los cuales luego fueron adaptados al cine en películas de Los Vengadores y X-Men. Además, es el creador de Kick-Ass, otro personaje que transitó el camino desde las historietas hasta la pantalla ilustre.

9. Se sondeo

El escritor Mark Millar incluso tiene en su currículum Se sondeo, una serie limitada de seis cómics lanzados entre 2003 y 2004. La trama gira más o menos de un oficinista que suele ser acosado en el trabajo y en la vida, hasta que descubre que es el heredero del puesto que su padre tenía como un nocivo en una estructura secreta indicación “La Fraternidad”.

La historia fue adaptada al cine en la película homónima que cuenta con un equipo de suntuosidad compuesto por Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy y Morgan Freeman, entre otros grandes actores. Tras acoger críticas positivas, dos nominaciones a los Óscar en categorías vinculadas al sonido y el éxito de cobro, se planteó la idea de hacer una secuela. Sin retención, el plan fue postergado y se desconoce si efectivamente será llevado a extremidad.

10. 300

La historia de los 300 espartanos que lograron detener la invasión persa pese a ser superados en número es un importante ícono cultural: la batalla de las Termópilas es mencionada en el ámbito musical (por ejemplo, en el Himno Nacional de Colombia), y en la letras, ya que fue adaptada al mundo del cómic en 300, trabajo realizado por el argumentista y dibujante Frank Miller, y publicado en 1998.

Esa novelística gráfica fue la inspiración para la película de 2006, en la que Gerard Butler interpretó al rey Leónidas. La cinta posee colores y enseres especiales que ayudan a reproducir las imágenes de la historieta flamante. Su éxito abrió el paso para que, en 2014, se estrenara su secuela bajo el nombre de 300: El comienzo de un imperio.

11. La Máscara

La Máscara, de 1994, consagró a Jim Carrey como cómico y permitió el brinco a la triunfo de Cameron Diaz. Podrá objetarse que, en verdad, este personaje sí es un superhéroe con poderes sobrehumanos, pero claramente no es uno tradicional. Lo cierto es que la película fue un gran éxito, una de las más taquilleras en el año de su estreno, la cual incluso habilitó la creación de una serie animada.

DC Comics Pull Box For 9-6-17 (New Comics and Merchandise) DC Comics News has compiled a list of DC Comics titles and collectibles shipping to comic shops for September 6, 2017.

Last night, I took the chance to rewatch Alex Proyas’s #thecrowmovie on the big screen at @plazaatlanta, and the film reasserted why it had the impact on me that it did in 1994. This is a visual and sonic experience that suits itself beautifully for the theatrical venue, as Proyas and cinematographer Darius Wolzski shoot and light Alex McDowell’s sets in a way that feels as monochrome as black-and-white, making the colors that do shine through (primarily, reds) have even more of an impact. The editing and camerawork is a visceral exercise brought over from music videos that works in concert to an all-time great soundtrack of metal and alternative songs, and Graeme Revell’s haunting score. At the center of it is Brandon Lee’s final performance as the resurrected Eric Draven, but there are so many actors (especially Ernie Hudson, Rochelle Davis as Sarah, Michael Wincott, and basically everyone in a big role) who have little moments or emotional beats they play perfectly. When the film goes into bigger shootouts, it feels very cinematic and impersonal, but when Eric is up close, exacting his revenge, or Top Dollar and his cohorts bring their victims in to their violent tendencies, the film lands like a punch to the gut, and not just because of the tragic irony of Lee’s death during filming. This is something none of the film’s sequels- “City of Angels” (compromised by post-production meddling that negates what’s another great musical experience), “Salvation” (though underrated), and “Wicked Prayer” (which is just awful)- nor the TV show (“Stairway to Heaven”), were able to replicate, probably because they weren’t fueled by James O’Barr’s pain, Proyas’s vision and Lee’s passion, and set to a soundtrack that had all three of those things in spades.
