Tumblr media
New project for Martin!
The English-language adaptation of Momo, one of the best-loved fantasy books by The Neverending Story writer Michael Ende, has set a buzzy cast, with Alexa Goodall (A Gentleman In Moscow) taking the lead role of the young orphan girl Momo.
The main cast is completed by Araloyin Oshunremi (Top Boy, Heartstopper), Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve, The Witcher), Claes Bang (The Square), Laura Haddock (The Recruit, Transformers: The Last Knight), Jennifer Amaka Peterson (The Sandhamn Murders), David Shütter (Charlie’s Angels) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock).

If you're into magical girls, you'll like Momo by Michael Ende.
The basic premise is about a girl and her animal companion (sound familiar?) trying to stop the Men in Grey, a group of supernatural beings who extend their lives by stealing time from humanity (they also, not coincidentally, take the form of bankers with grey skin and grey clothes, wearing grey bowler hats and smoking cigars). They do this by convincing people to overwork themselves, under the pretense of saving time, when it really just makes humans unhappy and tired with their lives while the Men in Grey eat the time up and extend their own existence. Their only threat is children, who have all the time in the world and cannot be convinced like adults that they are wasting time by playing games and having fun... so the Men in Grey work on the adults by telling them to monitor their children's every move, and to cut back on "wasteful" things like fun games and art so the children will be dedicated to overworking themselves as adults. The whole book has a very fantastical, dreamy kind of lore that you see in magical girl stories.

Designs for the girl Momo from the same-named book by Michael Ende, for an uni project. I tried out some different face designs, and I think I'll stick with this one! I also might swap the trenchcoat with something more modern, and by that giving the illustrations a bit more present feeling :)

Michael Ende is way to good at describing depression without actually calling it depression I'm losing my mind

4. What’s the first book you read in your life?
5. What’s your favorite childhood book?
Thank you for the ask! Something something this ask game.
4. What’s the first book you read in your life?
No fucking clue. But I think this one's a big contender.

5. What’s your favorite childhood book?
I don't really remember many, but here's 3:
Jim Knopf und die Wilde 13 by Michael Ende (This one's in tatters — I had that one before I even knew there was a first part :D)
Die Geschichte von der Schüssel und vom Löffel by Michael Ende
English Jr from Berlitz, with a cassette tape, and a cute little teddy bear who taught me my first English
Unfortunately, I have no idea where the latter two are, or if they got thrown away. Some years back (while clearing out my grandparents' place) my dearest brother went berserk on what used to be my room when I was little, and I did fish a few of my books out of the public paper trash container, but there might have been some I missed — it was midnight and dark 🫤
Bonus mention for Ein Kind entsteht, an (adult) book about pregnancy with pictures of ultrasounds and everything which I was obsessed with when my mother was pregnant with my brother 😅

Rating books I got from the library:
Worst to best!
Tumblr media
Terlamane: Realm of the Gerits, Aysha Alnaqbi. -3/10
The concept is amazing, I loved the idea, but it was done really bad.
It sounds like how bread in water tastes.
Barely got through the prologue and Chapter 1.
Written like these Mary Sue OC inserts (Wattpad flashbacks).
Tumblr media
Legend, Marie Lu.
-6/10.
Was sort of mid-ish.
I had somewhat high expectations, but didn't really get emerged.
Not guaranteed to read the next book.
Not outwardly bad. Good writing.
Tumblr media
The Midnight Star, Marie Lu. -8/10.
Magiano and Adelina *Chef's Kiss*
EMOTIONALLY DRAINING
I was crying for the last 30 pages straight.
The rest of the series is also fire.
Tumblr media
Momo/ The Grey Gentlemen, Michael Ende. -10/10
HELP WHY WAS THIS SO SAD AND DEEP AND THRILLING.
The book looked so innocent when I picked it up and I was tricked.
Idk what they call him in English (I read the Arabic version) but Gigi is my boy now.
Best decision I've ever made. Well done, Michael of 1973.
Next book list: The Revenge of Seven, Eragon, The Inn, Divergent.

Character design inspired by the book Momo by Michael Ende. Master Hora ⏰ 🕰️⏳
I imagine him like the author Michael Ende, even though the description of this character in the book is different.

WIP of my latest illustration for my Momo project: at this point, all of the 5 illu pieces I've done so far look kinda different in style, but I try not to care so much about that, because I still feel like I'm learning a lot with each drawing...so if the end product isn't perfect and looking ready to be published in a childrens' book or such, it's not so bad. Since I've still gotten a pretty good practice out of it on my way to find a style I enjoy drawing, seeing what works and what doesn't. I've found that some colour combinations I like to do with my scribbles don't really work applied to big illustrations, as it pretty soon looks kinda boring and kitsch. Also guys, appreciate your gray colour penciles more! They help a ton to hold your piece together.

Books Read in 2023: Momo by Michael Ende
Rating: 4/5 ⭐
Anti-capitalism! For kids.
Momo tells the story about a young homeless girl that goes by that name. She lives in the ruins of an old amphitheatre and is known to help people by being a good listener. One day sinister grey men arrive in town and start making deals with people to rob them of their time. People become bitter workaholics that don't have time for anything else because at least they are making good money and being productive. Only Momo can resist these sinister men, but she will need help to save her friends that no longer visit her.
This book was really charming and the small black and white illustrations represented it really well. I wish all the books had illustrations.
I really liked the themes and the characters in this story, but the resolution was a bit too easy due to the help of Cassiopeia, the tortoise that predicts what is going to happen for half an hour counting from the present time. Still, easy resolutions are common in middle grade books and so is the fact that they tend to wrap up really fast and this is no exception.
One thing that bothered me about this book is how the author felt the need to keep describing the two fat characters as being fat everytime they are on the page. No other adjectives are used as frequently for any other characters so this is not only annoying, but also jarring. I know this is a common thing especially in old books for kids, but it bothers me everytime. One of those characters is also presented as a boy with a girl's voice. I wish this meant he was trans, but I just know this is a poor attempt at trying to be funny just like fatness tends to be used for comedic relief. Those aren't major things in this book because these characters are almost always in the background, but it is still there and I had to mention it.
I really liked Momo and her friendship with Gigi and Beppo especially. Those were the three best characters. Beppo is this kind old man that sweeps the streets and everyone thinks he is a bit mad and Gigi survives by telling stories and asking for money at the end (also tricking people a little bit). Their character arcs were my favourite part of the book.
"The Neverending Story" is also waiting for me on my shelves and hopefully I can read it this year too. I decided to read this one first because a friend told me I would probably like it more and I also watched the movie adaptation of the other book so I am not as curious about it.
