Promising discovery for Alzheimer's treatment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The findings were published on 8 Jan 2024 in Communications Biology and include discoveries of a druggable target and a drug candidate, made by Meenakshisundaram Balasubramaniam, Ph.D., the paper’s first author.
An estimated 50-65% of people with Alzheimer’s disease have inherited the Alzheimer’s gene, Apolipoprotein E4 (APOEε4), from one or both parents. About 25% of people have one copy of APOEε4 and are three times as likely to develop the disease. Those with two copies (one from each parent) make up 2-3% of the population and are 12-15 times as likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
Balasubramaniam, co-principal investigator on the NIH grant with Griffin, said UAMS built the first known full-length structure of APOEε4 protein in 2017, which he created using bioinformatics and computational modeling techniques. This foundational work led to the discovery of the druggable site on the APOEε4 protein, ApoE4. (APOEε4 refers to the gene, and ApoE4, without the epsilon symbol and no italics, is the protein.)
Balasubramaniam’s unique skills and curiosity, Griffin said, were the catalyst for the discoveries. “I don’t know of anyone else in the world but Dr. Balasubramaniam who can do the work that’s in this paper,” Griffin said of the assistant professor and Inglewood Scholar in the Department of Geriatrics.

Classical Dance: Contribution of Rukmini Devi in Bharatanatyam
Bharatnatyam is one of the oldest and most popular forms of classical dance performed in the state of Tamil Nadu by Devadasis in the courts of Kings and the temples. Nowadays, it is common to see many individuals taking extra interest in this impressive dance form. Bharatnatyam is a worldwide phenomenon liked by kids and adults alike.
But, discussing this classical dance form would be incomplete if we forget to mention the great Rukmini Devi Arundale. She was both a reputed Bharatnatyam dancer and choreographer. Her contribution and charismatic personality to the Indian classical music renaissance helps her attain her niche in the Indian culture arena.
It is believed that Rukmini Devi even declined the President's chair when Morarji Desai (then President of India) offered her the same. She dedicated her life to protecting animal rights and their welfare.
The early life of Rukmini Devi
Rukmini Devi was born on 29th February 1904. Her father's involvement in the Theosophical Society helped her get influenced by Annie Besant at a very early age.
 Marriage
Rukmini Devi came across Dr. George Arundale in 1917, who was an active Theosophical Society member. Rukmini Devi's love for humanity and humankind is what fascinated Dr. Arundale. And in the year 1920, with their family's approval and support, Rukmini Devi and Dr. Arundale got married.
However, society was not so keen on this marriage, especially the conservatives, given that Rukmini Devi was a Brahmin girl who married outside the caste.
 Dance
In the olden days, Bharatnatyam was performed by Devadasis and was considered low and vulgar art during that period. Even after belonging to the upper caste, Rukmini Devi advocated the cause of Bharatnatyam and began to learn this classical dance from Mylapore Gauri Ammal. She even convinced the proficient Meenakshisundaram Pillai to come to Madras to teach her this mesmerizing dance form.
In 1935, Rukmini Devi gave her first performance during the diamond jubilee celebration of the Theosophical society.
 Formation of Kalakshetra
Within a year of her first performance, Rukmini Devi and Dr. George Arundale decided to form Kalakshetra. Pandit S. Subramania Sastri, a Sanskrit scholar and Theosophical society member came up with the name.
Later, renowned dancers like Muthukumara Pillai, Karaikkal Saradambal Ammal, and Meenakshisundaram Pillai joined Kalakshetra as teachers.

Jayalalithaa death inquiry: Arumughaswamy commission sent summons to 6 doctors
Chennai : Fore steps on former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa death inquiry commission of Justice (retd) A Arumughaswamy probing the circumstances surrounding J Jayalalithaa’s death has now summoned six doctors from Apollo hospitals on February 5.
The commission, which had indicated that it would examine deputy CM O Panneerselvam on that day, has left him out of the summons list that was issued on Tuesday evening.
The commission has not yet indicated if OPS has been summoned on February 1 or February 5. Efforts to reach the officials from the commission proved futile.
The commission has issued summons to Dr Arulselvam, Dr Kamesh, Dr Ravichandran, Dr Ramagopal, Dr Sajan K and Dr Meenakshisundaram in response to an application filed by Raja Senthoor Pandian, counsel for VK Sasikala, in December.
Apollo had filed an application before the commission that doctors should be examined only if a 21-member medical board is formed. This application was rejected by the commission.
Pandian told, “The commission had initially summoned OPS on Tuesday, but adjourned the proceedings suo-motu without any of the parties asking for it. Now, the latest summons does not include his name,” he said.
The commission on Monday evening issued a letter stating that they would take up the hearing of application number 3 of 2018, which was filed by Apollo, to postpone the appearance of doctors.
However, the commission had already passed orders on this application last week. Sources on Tuesday said when it was brought to the commission’s notice, it acknowledged its error.
