MMA has long boasted about its ability to make the fights that fans want to see. Unfortunately, those matchups are usually limited to competitors within the same organization. Though it's been done, cross-promotion super-fights are extremely rare. Nevertheless, fans always welcome them with open arms.

If there were no hurdles between the top three MMA promotions in the world – UFC, ONE Championship, and Bellator – we could witness some astonishing matchups transpire in the cage.

With that in mind, here are five dream World Champion vs. World Champion super-fights that would delight any MMA fan.

#1 Khabib Nurmagomedov (UFC) vs. Christian Lee (ONE)

Khabib Nurmagomedov against anyone would be fun to see, but a fight against ONE Championship Lightweight Champion Christian Lee would rank among the most interesting options.

At just 22 years old, Lee is a full decade younger than “The Eagle” and is the youngest male MMA World Champion in history. He also has a well-rounded skill set that he believes would pose problems for the Russian.

After a stellar 2020 for Deiveson Figueiredo, there’s really no reason to cast any doubts on the man. The reigning UFC Flyweight Champion produced three spectacular finishes and then fought to a draw with Brandon Moreno in a matchup that many called the greatest flyweight fight of all time.

Figueiredo-Johnson is perhaps the most logical proposition on this list in terms of a fight that makes total sense. Sadly, fans can only dream.

#3 Douglas Lima (Bellator) vs. Kamaru Usman (UFC)

It’s the best welterweight in the UFC versus the best welterweight in Bellator – simple as that.

Bellator Welterweight Champion Lima has been at the top of the game for such a long time now that he's considered one of the best fighters in the world. Meanwhile, UFC Welterweight Champion Usman has proven his dominance with an insane 16-fight winning streak.

There’s no doubt that both men come to fight, and this matchup would be pretty much guaranteed to feature an epic showcase of violence. Usman’s wrestling would be an advantage, but Lima has improved by leaps and bounds in that area over the past few years.

It would be interesting to see who imposes their will if these athletes ever throw down. Lima has a knack for bringing the fight to his opponents, so Usman’s hands would definitely be full against the Brazilian. Though Usman has been dominant, Lima could be the guy to knock him out.

#4 Gegard Mousasi (Bellator) vs Reinier De Ridder (ONE)

Reigning Bellator Middleweight Champion Mousasi has been one of the best in the world for some time now. Even when he left the UFC for Bellator, he was still at his peak. He's now won 10 of his last 11 fights, with victories over some huge names.

De Ridder is the newly crowned ONE Championship Middleweight Champion. He defeated the highly regarded Aung La N Sang quite easily back in October to capture the belt. Undefeated at 13-0, De Ridder has also been able to impose his will nearly every time out with 12 finishes.

The Irishman also made news for two other unsavoury incidents.

In one, he was accused of smashing a fan’s phone – although the charges were subsequently dropped following his arrest – and in another, he punched a man in a Dublin pub and was convicted of assault.

Conor McGregor has been racking up belts and dollars during his MMA career. He became the UFC’s first two-weight champion and has fought in the UFC’s top five pay-per-view fights.

McGregor is a name that transcends the sport and while little is known about Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone outside of MMA, he’s a big hit amongst UFC fans.

At 36 he’s nearing the end of a storied MMA career in which he has amassed a number of impressive records.

He has fought 33 times in the UFC, sharing the record with fellow American Jim Miller, and has the most wins (23), most finishes (16), most knockdowns (20) and most post-fight bonuses (18) – racking up $1.5m in prize money for awards such as Knockout and Performance of the Night. He knows how to put on a show then.

He’s back…

Conor McGregor v Donald Cerrone

It’s 470 days since Conor McGregor’s last fight night, when he was beaten by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October 2018.

But tonight the Irishman is back in action at UFC 246, taking on Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

And despite the welterweight bout being a non-title fight, it is set to break pay-per-view figures, with 31-year-old McGregor saying he will earn a record £80m.

'Mother's plan': Khabib's coach says UFC superstar won't come back without the approval of his mother (VIDEO)

With all of the excited talk around the sport regarding the possible comeback of Khabib Nurmagomedov, the UFC star’s coach urged people to pump the brakes just a little.

Head coach of the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, Javier Mendez, has taken on head coach duties with Khabib following the untimely death of his father and coach, Abdulmanap, last year.

And the former kickboxing star-turned-MMA coach said that he agreed with Khabib’s assertion that he would need to have a special fight in front of him to coax him out of retirement.

But he also made a crucial point – he’d need to get his mother’s permission first.

“I agree (it has to be a special fight for him to come back). But we also have to remember one thing: he has to get his mother’s permission too,” Mendez told RT Sport in Abu Dhabi.

“Mother’s plan. She has to approve. He can say ‘yes,’ but he has to follow mother.

“He said, ‘I promised mother.’ Well, she hasn’t given permission, as far as I’m concerned. The great person that he is, if he decides to come back and feels someone is worthy, he’s going to have to ask mother, too.”

Of course, talk of Khabib’s possible return has reignited the hype surrounding a potential rematch against Conor McGregor and, with both men currently in Abu Dhabi, Mendez said the UFC would be well advised to keep the two heated rivals well apart.

“I would think they (the UFC) would try to avoid (a meeting), that would be smart,” he said.

“I think 100 percent it makes sense to avoid those meetings… Conor as a fighter is fantastic, one of the best I’ve ever seen, but as a person I don’t like him, I don’t like what he does, speaking about country, religion and family. I don’t think they should ever come into play for the fight game. Talk trash, but leave all the other stuff alone.

“He did his research and attacked all those things, it’s kind of hard to forgive that. It’s not all business, we’re talking family here, religion and country. It’s hard on people. That’s why I certainly don’t care for him, I don’t hate him, but I don’t particularly care for him.”

McGregor, meanwhile, has attempted to claim that Khabib was never actually crowned UFC lightweight champion, just because his win over the Irishman was never officially announced in the octagon.

“I am the champion,” he told ESPN.

“Do you know that the unified title was never crowned? The unified title was never crowned that time in October 2018.

“Khabib fled the cage and left me fighting with his family members in the cage. The post-fight ceremony never took place.”
