pjo brainrot  /  intros ; lucinda layton.
When her mother leaves, so does she. It doesn’t take long. Perhaps it was the way her mother’s eyes lingered on her when she left for work, maybe it was the gentle kiss on the forehead that is a rarity between them, or maybe it was the finality when she said, “Goodbye, Lucinda.” Both of them know she won’t be coming back this evening, or the next, or any evening going forward.
And so Lucinda does what she always does: she fends for herself.
The streets of New York are no place for a ten year old girl, but she manages. Stealing is second nature to her, a talent she’s had for as long as she can remember, when her mother used to take her on little ‘trips’ in the city and would gesture towards innocent civilians who weren’t paying attention to their pockets. It’s a honed skill and she puts it to use when she needs it most. It works on everyone she comes across.
Until it doesn’t, but in her defense, how was she supposed to know the lady’s chihuahua would turn into some kind of monster? And an ugly one at that.
“What is that thing?!” she yells, jumping back to dodge.
“Such a silly demigod, not knowing a chimera when they see one,” the lady — who is looking a bit more monstrous now — says.
Dodging another swipe of the chimera’s claws, she glances around. Despite the giant lion-snake-whatever attacking her, no one is turning their heads, not a single glance spared her way. Surely people would stop and stare at such a thing, right?
The chimera opens its mouth and its breath begins to warm, the only warning Lucinda has before it hurls fire her way. The ends of her hair are singed and she now has a burn mark on her elbow. That’s going to hurt when the adrenaline wears off.
Just as she’s readying to dodge yet again, there comes a voice from behind. “Duck!”
She doesn’t wait to find out if the warning is meant for her or not. Dropping to the ground, she covers her head with her hands and closes her eyes, only opening them when she hears a roaring scream. What she sees has her jaw dropping.
A boy, a good few years older than her most likely, stands in front of her, sword in hand. She can only gape as he slashes at the chimera with no fear for the fire and poison spitting out of its heads. He moves with practiced motions and she stares until a hand grabs her arm.
“Come on, kid.” The voice belongs to another boy, still older than her, but younger than the one leading the fight. “We have to get out of here. He can handle it.”
She doesn’t need to be told twice.
