Bartuszová's abstract white plaster sculptures retain the presence of her body. Her touch left traces, whether pressed by hand, poured and formed by gravity or under water, or shaped by the breath using her radical technique of casting plaster with inflated balloons.

The late Slovak artist Maria Bartuszová might be one of the greatest sculptors you’ve never heard of, but with the UK’s first major exhibition of her work opening later this month at Tate Modern, now is the perfect time to fall in love with her impressive legacy of around 500 sculptural pieces.Born in the former Czechoslovakia in 1936, Bartuszová became an innovator in the medium of sculpture in the 1960s. Her ingenuity could be attributed, in part, to the mandatory isolation of living life under communist rule, but was also a result of her undeniable creativity and sharply focused vision.
Narrating the full breadth of her largely unpublicised three-decade career, Tate Modern’s new exhibition guides the audience through a moving body of tactile, sensual, and evocative sculptures, with organic and biomorphic shapes that reflect the interests of their maker, and the shapes and movements that defined her world. The show will feature 50 of Bartuszová's delicate plaster works, alongside bronze casts and aluminium reliefs, many of which have never been shown in the UK before.

Introduction-
This body of work is a combination of foundation, personal, and school work, which best represent my personal style and work process. I have included a variety of mediums, ranging from wearable pieces, to digital portraiture. I feel most inspired by people, and human bodies, and characteristics, which can be seen in some of these pieces, whether its a drawing of a body, or a more focused study of human skin. Within this body of work, artists such as Maria Bartuszová, Iris Van Herpen, and Alexander McQueen can be seen to have served as inspiration.

Maria Bartuszová
Bartuszová uses balloons and other inflatable objects to create beautiful and very tactile work. The pieces can often be disassembled and reassembled allowing them to be used in an exhibition designed exclusively for the visually impaired.

with the left over balloons i wanted to put them to use and thought of Maria Bartuszová work. i put the balloons in a box and tapped it up so that it was sealed (little did i know later on the plaster would flow out). i brought the box down and added the plaster to it but one thing after another i had to add the balloons to the bucket of plaster instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over all it worked out cool. i love the pockets in the plaster that the balloons made and cant wait to bring it into photoshop to see if i can do anything with it for graphic design.
