Why is it that raunchy and regressive Bhojpuri action musicals get nationwide traction as the major type of cinema produced by Bihar?
Bhojpuri and Maithili are Bihar’s native languages. During the struggle for independence, a chunk of the elite, as well as the revolutionaries, warmed up to Hindi after Mahatma Gandhi proposed that Hindi should be the national language as a unifying bond for all Indians to fight the British.
After independence, Hindi got imposed on schools, colleges, and universities all over Bihar and our native languages were pushed to the sidelines. Now, years later, neither can Biharis speak in Hindi properly nor do they have any sense of ownership or sensitivity towards their native languages. As Bhojpuri and Maithili language began to rot so did its literature, and if the language itself is dead, how can its cinema survive?
Bengali and Marathi cinema, for example, are respected because there is a strong sense of linguistic pride in Bengal and Maharashtra thanks to their literature.
Today, Lollypop Lagelu has become Bihar’s trademark song. It is a matter of shame for every Bihari. Once, Hindi became mandatory for jobs, why would anyone want to learn Bhojpuri or Maithili? Upper castes and urban Biharis don’t know their mother tongue. In that case, only the underprivileged stick to native languages and thus Bhojpuri cinema caters to them – quick-fix, cheap entertainment.
this interview was going so well but then we reach this absolutely damning statement at the end! all these cultural studies on contemporary bhojpuri cinema and music seem to always go back to this: this vulgarity, cheapness, hypersexualized content, and crassness that make bhojpuri and bihar infamous is bc of the “underprivileged” audience. what he wants to say is that as the 1990s rolled around, lower caste bihari assertion and visibility in both the social and the political sphere directly influenced all forms of cultural production. or more loosely, the fall of brahmanical dominance meant that bihar lost its “tradition”, its “culture”, its “sanskaar”. this is a similar casteist argument thrown at the telugu film industry and its audience, and jenny rowena wrote about how brahmanical nostalgia for “classic” malayalam cinema arose during the 90s and early 2000s as lower caste malayali men became who films “catered” to. please let’s revaluate the caste makeup of these film industries and who continues to hold the reigns and actually produces this content. i’m so tired of reading these articles that ultimately vilify people with no power over this.

EPIC! 13 New Years in 1 Day!
April 14 is the busiest day for The Year of Years. Before I sat down to do my proper research I had counted eight separate celebrations happening today. I've now managed to find another five, taking us up to 13.
I’ve decided the easiest is to list them rather than write separate posts. But I want to make it clear that though many of these are related, they are different events, not just different names for the same day. Each has its own customs grown of local culture. Some mark specific local calendars, some mark religious celebrations, some are about bringing people of all (or no) faiths together in a common celebration.
1. Assamese New Year is celebrated as Bohag Bihu. It is non-religious, bringing together people across all cultures. Loads of pics and details here including this one, of the cows having a celebratory river bathing.
2. Jude Sheetal is the Maithili New Year, celebrated in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. It begins the Maithil or Tirhuta Panchang - the calendar used by the Mithila region, which is itself based on the Hindu Solar calendar.
3. Pana Sankranti, also known as Maha Vishuba Sankranti or Mahabisuha Sankranti, is the traditional new year day festival of Hindus in Odisha, India. They make a special drink called Pana prepared by mixing different types of fruits, water, milk, pulp of bael (custard apple), curd and sugar. Hmm. Maybe mmm. Not sure. There are carnival-like celebrations, including famously a fire-walk, where volunteers sprint over a bed of burning coal while being cheered with music and songs.
4. Shubho Nabobarsho is the greeting for Pahela Baishakh, the traditional new year day of the Bengali people. A non-religious event, it unites people and is a national holiday in Bangladesh, West Bengal and Tripura state. A huge procession celebrating the day is organised by Dhaka University in Bangladesh. Its name Mangal Shobhajatra means “procession for wellbeing” and in 2016, UNESCO declared it an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
5. Keralan New Year is called Vishu. It is a Hindu new year festival “notable for its solemnity and the general lack of pomp and show that characterize other Hindu festivals of Kerala.” Apparnately it is “also attracts firework play by children” - which doesn’t sound solemn…
6. Puthandu also known as Puthuvarusham or Tamil New Year, is the first day of year on the Tamil calendar, celebrated by Tamil Hindus wherever they live. Had I been doing this project a few years ago - or if I do it again in a few more - the date may change. This article outlines the strange, complex and contentious issue surrounding the change of the date of New Year when different parties come to power: for 3 years New Year was in January 2008-2011, was then reversed when the current administration got in - and who knows what will happen at the next election.
7. Aluth Avurudda is the New Year of the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka, and more widely celebrated across Sri Lanka as it is a public holiday. Traditionally women hail the new year by playing the Raban, a one-sided drum made from goat skin and the bark of Mangifera caesia, or the Jack tree - a plant that has to be handled carefully as it also produces poison that is - so my friend that recently visited Sri Lanka told me - used as a subtle murder weapon, because the taste is easy to mask in cooking.
8. Cambodian New Year is called Chaul Chnam Thmey. Cambodians also use Buddhist Era to count the year based on the Buddhist calendar. For 2017, it is 2561 BE (Buddhist Era)
9. Pi Man is Lao New Year - and like Cambodian New Year and Thai New Year (with which it shares an alternate name, Songkran) it is the Water Festival. It is a three day festival, with day 1 being the last of the year, day 2 a “day of no year” and day 3 is the first day of the new year. I wonder if there is any superstition, or in fact actual administrative trouble, connected to being born on the day between the years?
10. Thingyan New Year in Myanmar and is another Buddhist festival. The calendar here is the Burmese calendar. It sounds almost clinical, the way the presumably raucous celebration of this festival is described. But then, thats wikipedia for you. ”Water-throwing or dousing one another from any shape or form of vessel or device that delivers water is the distinguishing feature of this festival and may be done on the first four days of the festival.”
11. The Tulu people, or Tuluva speak Tulu language and celebrate Bisu Parba as their new year. Tula Nadu is not a state but a region in India from which the Tulu people originate.
12. Cheiraoba is Manipur’s New Year. Among the feasting, decorating and cleaning is a lovely custom: “after the grand feast, all the people climb the nearby hill-tops (normally referred to as Cheiraoching) to enable them to rise to greater heights in this worldly life.” (From here
Number 13 is Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year. I'm going to write a separate post about that one though, because I am tired and I need to do more research - I want to know about how this and Nanakshahi, from a few weeks back, relate.
NB, these 13 take us up to 40 New Years. Wowzers.

He had the benefit to work with all the main artists of this nation and furthermore loaned his voice in the nation's best maker's films. He wedded Deepa Narayan in 1985 and together they have a child Aditya, who is additionally a vocalist.
Through the '90s, Udit Narayan was the nearest opponent of Kumar Sanu for the title of most mainstream male playback vocalist in Indian silver screen - no little accomplishment, since films remain the essential vehicle for scattering well-known music to the Indian Open. In spite of the fact that he wasn't exactly as productive as Sanu, Narayan flaunted a standout amongst the most particular voices and unique singing styles the music-dependent film industry had seen since the brilliance long periods of Mohammed Rafi (Narayan's essential starting impact) and Kishore Kumar. Narayan was conceived in the town of Mithila Nagri in Janakpur, close to the fringe of Nepal; his dad was an agriculturist and his mom a vocalist, and she urged him to seek after music as a vocation. For the greater part of the '70s, Narayan filled in as an artist on Nepalese radio in Kathmandu, performing Nepalese and northern Indian society melodies. The greater part of that changed, in any case, in 1989. Narayan snared with the best in class author team Anand-Milind, who was scoring a film for an exceptional youthful performing artist named Aamir Khan. Narayan's young sounding voice appeared an ideal counterpart for Khan's screen nearness, and he was procured alongside female vocalist Alka Yagnik to deal with the vast majority of the soundtrack, including the highlighted number "Papa Kehte Hain." Titled Qayamat Se, Qayamat Tak, the film turned into a blockbuster achievement, catapulting for all intents and purposes everybody required into fame.
Apparently all of a sudden, the beforehand obscure Narayan won the 1989 Filmfare Award (kind of an Oscar and Grammy consolidated) for Best Male Vocalist, on account of "Father Kehte Hain," which had turned into a colossal hit among Indian adolescents. Unexpectedly, following quite a while of diligent work and lack of clarity, Narayan was a star. Work - and additionally hit melodies - came Narayan's way at a quick and angry pace. His next movie, Dil, was another hit, hardening his freshly discovered notoriety; he sang for about the greater part of India's significant music chiefs and named tunes for a wide assortment of performers (a test for a few artists whose voices may not fit the characters they should keep up). In 1995, Narayan broke Kumar Sanu's string of five straight Filmfare with his own particular second, for the tune "Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna" from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge.
