Magnus opened the doors of the old church, crossed the benches and rang up the elevator without a sound. He was trying not to worry before he had information, but a sudden call from Clary with the request for him to come over because she had something important to talk about was not a good omen for the future.

He had modified the wards of the Institute slightly to allow himself to get in without needing to wait for someone or be accompanied by Alec or Rafe every time, but even so when the elevator doors opened, Clary was already waiting there for him He wondered if she had been waiting there for him since she called - which, granted, hadn’t been that long ago.

In spite of everything, he opened a smile at her. He was always happy to see Clary. “Hey there, biscuit. You called and here I am. Care to explain now why I had to make up a fake client and am missing a wonderful family afternoon feeding ducks at the park?”

she does have a bit of a temper, though it’s quick. if she gets frustrated enough, she might snap for a moment but then she just fizzles out && then just immediately goes to upset silence. when she loses her temper, she isn’t going to hit anyone or be physical in any way, but she might shout or cry when she’s angry - especially when it’s from frustration. lillian is a big fan of the silent treatment, but that’s probably from her parent’s influence who used to do it to her when they were angry at her. she is absolutely not patient - she’s impatient as hell, but given the situation she’s more likely just to rant in her head about it than actually take it out on the person (such as in cases of it being at a restaurant, for example) as she knows it’s probably not the person’s fault && it’s not going to kill her to wait a couple more minutes for something. My dear friend Malcolm,

Troubling news have been reaching me about London lately. Rather, news have been saying that London hasn’t seen any trouble in quite a while, which is even more troubling in itself. 

Since Ragnor has retired from being the High Warlock, though, I am afraid I am not as privy to the state of the city as I once were, so imagine my surprise when I heard that you were the one residing in the city now, and patron to a very interesting establishment at that! If any of us would go into such a venture, I’d have imagined it would be me (which brings the great question: why haven’t I thought of that myself before? Rest assured I have already berated myself immensely for my lack of vision).

These two pieces of news brought together have urged me to write to you both to congratulate you and to reassure myself of your well-being. How have you been after everything? Are things in London as weird as I have been led to believe or are the tales exaggerated? And lastly: what has taken you so long to extend me an invitation to visit your club?

Day 10 - A quiet night, the only sound being the call of coyotes/wolves in the woods

“Do you think those are normal wolves or werewolves?” Magnus asked just to make small talk. He wasn’t opposed to nature and camping but he had to admit it wasn’t his favourite way to spend the night, much less with the total silent he and his companion had fallen into. He knew this was supposed to be patrol and they were supposed to keep watch, but keeping watch was boring and the novelty of it had worn off pretty soon.

He had decided to make a try at conversation, but if it failed he had decided he would just summon himself a book so at least he wouldn’t keep staring at nothing.

Day 4 - Reading by the fire when you hear the creak of someone on the stairs

Being alive was certainly a weird, contradictory thing. In many ways, this was an unhappy time. A time of worldly dangers and personal sadness and grief. But on the other hand, on this early evening sitting by the fire with a cozy blanket and a book, Magnus felt more content and relaxed than he had felt in a long while.

The creaking on the stairs brought another layer of mismatched feelings. On one hand, he was still worried about Tessa, but on the other her presence there was a calm and stable light, and he was happy that she was feeling perked up enough to go for walks around town on her own.

He lifted his head when he heard the door opening and smiled at her. "Welcome home, dearest. What pleasures and wonders did marvellous old Paris grace you with on your day out today?"

The layout of the institute was more than familiar now, so Magnus easily found his way to the training room after being let in. He stopped by the door, seeing Alec was about to take a shot. He didn’t want to disturb him, it was true, but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t also enjoying the view. He clapped when Alec hit the bullseye and smiled at him when he turned. “Great shot, darling. You don’t seem to be much in a rush, though. What was so urgent that I needed to get down here ASAP?”

Magnus doesn’t have a sleep schedule, he goes to sleep whenever he feels like it, which can be literally at any time, from 6 pm to 4 am or even 8 am. Sometimes he spends 2 or 3 days in a row without sleeping without even realising it.

Because of the fact the shadow world is more active at night, because of his profession and the late night clients, because nights are the time to have fun and party and also due to the fact he spent a great deal of time among vampires in recent centuries, he also has a habit of trading day for night, staying up all night and going to bed when the sun is up.

When he does fall asleep, though, don’t dare wake him up unless you want to risk the wrath of the high warlock on you. Even if you are someone he really likes and had a really good reason to wake him up, he will still be cranky* and have a short temper for hours or at least until he has had a good cup of coffee.

*His kids are, of course, exempt from this, they can wake him up whenever they want or need.

Magnus was definitely impressed. He wasn’t taken to violence in any way but he could definitely appreciate how much it took out of people to be able to perform it well, and nephilim, as annoying as they could be about it, were masters of it. And Isabelle seemed to be a master in between masters.

It was true she had kind of ambushed him into helping with her training, but he was actually having fun. If for no other reason, just for the game of trying to come up with increasingly more difficult obstacles for Izzy and see how she managed to find her way out of them.

He whistled when she escaped a ring of magic that tried to closed around her and clapped. “Not bad, not bad at all, Isabelle. Ready for the next challenge or have you had enough for the day?”

Magnus made a face that made it clear he was questioning Jace’s mental faculties at the moment. “Where did that come from?” He asked and threw another ring of magic at Jace for him to try and dodge. Sure, he was helping Jace train at the moment so he probably had fighting in his mind, but between that and fight animals there was a bit of a stretch. “I have never once thought about that. I don’t even know... Probably a rhino? They would knock over the other person before I even have to do anything. You?”

Magnus huffed, pretending to be affronted by Jace’s comment. “True, my stories are not for the faint of heart, perhaps I shouldn’t tell you any more, then.” He teased then sniffed, continuing to be dramatic about it. “Catarina would never tell you anything.” He said with a confidence he didn’t really have, knowing full well his friends always liked to tease him like that, but then let the topic behind and tilted his head at Jace’s surprised look after he defended him. He knew there was a time that Magnus himself wouldn’t have done that, but Jace had earned himself the benefit of the doubt, at least, with time. He listened to his explanation and then smiled, trying to reassure Jace with a friendly quip again: “I mean, if you were already sent to jail twice and that didn’t faze her, I don’t think there’s anything else you could do to ruin it.”

He rolled eyes lightly. “Lying side by side can hardly be described as snuggling. I am a very good snuggler, if I decide to snuggle you, you will know.” He nodded once, making a non-committal sound. “I thought a well-rounded education for shadowhunters included only all the different forms of weapons and killing. Would never have guessed Valentine had a taste for music, it was probably Jocelyn’s influence on him.” Magnus shivered, remembering how once Valentine had tortured a werewolf girl and then casually talked about going back home to have dinner with his wife. The most terrible monsters were the ones that knew how to be human but simply chose otherwise. “ I’d still like to see you play, sometime.”

Magnus knew that in the end he wasn’t telling anything new to the other but this was really a decision only Jace himself could make and Magnus was wary of unconsciously steering him on either direction since this was a matter that really didn’t concern him, no matter how close he had been to the family, a long time ago. “Not to be callous, Jace, but nephilim families disappear and come back all the time. It’s not your responsibility to keep any of them alive. If you don’t pick up the name, some future ascended mundane will do it, I’m sure. But on the other hand, I don’t think you are the kind of person that needs to worry about not rising up to a challenge, not even one made of expectations.” He shrugged. “If you really can’t decide, you could always flip a coin for it.”
