Lumin and Mimble's dance
Tumblr media
The child of Nightmare and Ink was thought to never find someone to his liking, being that he refused every attempt at courtship that came his way. Fairies believed he must not only have inherited his father’s free spirit and restlessness but also his mother’s love for solitude and peace. Indeed, they thought this so true and clear, that when the day a common summer fairy arose from the flowers to sing and dance for Lumin, none believed she would be successful. And yet, Lumin slowly began to move with her, his own calm flying soon turning into a dance of its own.
For hours they would dance and sing to each other, their eye lights locked in a burning gaze that not even the wind itself could penetrate. How fair and beautiful Mimble was, a true summer fairy that had never attempted to find a mate of her own, and yet now she put in her greatest efforts, for her Soul had grown fond of the fairy of autumn and spring whom she had watched for so long at a great distance, never quite daring to approach until the beetles themselves urged her on.
Lumin and Mimble’s dance would become a common sight for the season fairies to see, for even though their bond has grown secure and strong, they cannot help but act as though they are falling in love for the first time again and again; forever locked in a state of admiration and devotion.

Idea for my alien mermaids: decorative barnacles grown on scales, both as pets and as fashion. And in the case of Lakanoru priests, as a test to attain ataraxy: calm in the face of all circumstances.
Some species of barnacles are safe to let grow - they cause no harm, no pain, as long as the scales are thick enough. The ones the Lakanoru priests may wear/harbour, however, pierce the skin underneath.
The goal is to withstand pain and find ataraxy, regardless of circumstances, or how the Currents may favour them.
I can introduce this facet of worldbuilding through Lumin: a surgeon/doctor in training.
She could be assigned a Lakanoru priest whose barnacle removal was botched - the priest had completed that aspect of training and now is aspiring to master a different virtue.

Nightmare's delight
Warning: Childbirth
Soft silks gently caressed the floor as Nightmare walked over the roots of his home. His dark wings, long and neatly folded in rest, trailed behind him. Once again, his fairies had put on a feast of music, dance, and song, and he’d been unable to resist the laughs that trickled from him in endless streams as he watched them all entertain him. He was grateful for them; immensely so.
Glowing insects adored the roof and walls of his home, casting gentle lights over the roots surrounding him. He walked down a long path, letting his hand trail over the parent root of the ancient oak tree that stood tall above the ground. Further down, he came upon an underground pool, big enough to swim comfortably in, though for now he only sat beside its edge to let his legs cool in the clear water. It was cold, coming from the hailing rain on the surface as Autumn was at its peak.
Nightmare sighed, and with a small hint of hesitation, he lifted his hand and placed it upon his swollen belly. For many ages he’s carried this faerling of Autumn and Spring, never quite feeling sure of when he’d be ready to let them be born. They’d been in a deep sleep, put in a paused state of development, as Nightmare hadn’t wanted to give birth to a child that would be friendless and alone in a world where only the Firstborn resided. But now, after ages has passed, his domain was now filled with mirth and play. His fairies had been born from his image, his desire and hope, and they’d multiplied with each turning of the age.
Indeed, his faerling could be born now… but…
“Your presence brings me comfort, sweet apple,” Nightmare said, gently rubbing his belly. He’d grown so used to bearing this faerling, having their small Soul sing to him softly as it cradled close to his own. They had shown no desire to leave… though, they did not know any other life than this. They’d never seen or felt anything else than him, so, of course, they’d be content, but Nightmare knew he couldn’t keep them like this. They deserved to draw breath, to run and fly amongst the roots of his nest, to watch the blue sky, to feel the droplets of rain, to fall in love and bring life to their own faerlings. And even more so, Nightmare wished to hold them in his arms, to let them suckle on his breast for milk, to watch their eye lights investigate his own, to see the form of their wings, and most importantly; to see them grow.
“Sweet apple, would you like to be born?” he asked, his voice a soft whisper, not expecting to receive an answer, though a giggling gasp passed his lips as he felt a light tickle pass through his swollen belly. They were curious, their small Soul excited about this strange news of a birth.
Nightmare sighed and removing his gown, he sunk down into the pool of water, its chill soothing his summoned flesh and exposed bones. He kept his wings above the surface, making sure they lay by its edge to keep them dry. Slowly, he spread his legs, and taking a trembling breath, he released the spell that kept his faerling from being born.
He gasped as pain shot through him, and he groaned as he spread his legs further. Normally, nursing fairies would assist with a birth, but Nightmare wanted to do this alone. He wished for no one else than himself to see his faerling be born into this world.
“Sweet apple,” he groaned, and taking a deep breath, he pushed. Tears stung the corners of his sockets as he closed them shut. He soon felt an odd pulling sensation as his faerling’s Soul retreated and returned to its own vessel. They were slowly, but surely, being born.
Glittering iridescent blood began to float to the surface of the water, and the smell of it had Nightmare concerned that some of his fairies would notice his current state and would come for his immediate assistance. So, with those thoughts in mind, he pushed even harder and shed tears as he screamed.
The autumn fairies, with their strange magical wings of odd curves and colours, flocked as they heard their precious Queen cry and scream from the depths of her nest. Quickly they flew to her aid, frightened that she’d been hurt, or worse, attacked by someone unknown. They hurried down the swirling roots leading to the turquoise pool, prepared to defend their Queen with their lives. However, as they found her by the pool’s edge, her wings laid limp behind her on the dry ground, her iridescent blood pooling in the water around her, they found her… crying. Fearing she’d been hurt, they approached quickly but halted as they came close and took in the bundle in her arms.
“My sweet, beautiful apple,” Nightmare whispered, his voice trembling with love and joy, his tears trickling past his cheeks and mingling with the water as they fell. Gently he stroked the tiny faerling in his arms, their bones pearlescent and slightly stained with iridescent blood. “How lovely you are, my little apple, my darling faerling.”
Seeing their Queen’s true happiness, the autumn fairies fell to their knees around her, shedding tears of their own as joy filled their souls. Never before had they seen their Queen so full of love and merriment, and they quietly rejoiced the birth of her faerling, as they had known for all of their life that she’s been unwilling to part with it for so long, and yet now, as she cradled their small body close to her warm chest, they gently began to sing her a song of comfort and delight, knowing that this faerling would help in keeping their beloved Queen happy for a long time forward.
Their song, which told of their Queen’s childbirth, paused as they waited for her to tell them the faerling’s name. Nightmare kept silent for a while, not able to speak as she took in the tiny faerling who nursed so sweetly on her breast; eager to feed on her milk.
“… My sweet apple, I will name you Lumin, for you were born in the glowing pool of my home, its luminescent light always shining so brightly; no matter the weather, no matter the grief or joy surrounding it,” he whispered to his faerling, his hand gently cradling their skull; almost fully enveloping it. “My sweet Lumin, my little apple.” He leaned down to kiss their cheek. “You are my light.”
The song of the autumn fairies continued to fill the home of Nightmare, its joyful tune clinging to every root, every speck of dirt, and to every insect residing there, and so it would continue to do forevermore, until the days and nights turned to dust, and the light of the sun and the moon was snuffed out and laid to rest.
