What’s the purpose of the sacs of the lesser sac-winged bat (Saccopteryx leptura)?🦇 The sacs on its wings are scent glands, which are used to mark territory and help individuals identify others of its own species! Studies have shown that females recognize and prefer scents that come from a male of the same species over the scent of a male from a closely related species. The winged mammal lives in forests in parts of Central and South America, where it awakens from its roost during the last hours of the day and remains active into the night, when it looks for moths and other small insects to munch on. Some info about Cephlani familiars and the bonding process behind that. Also a list of Callan and Ellyas' familiars, so I can link them to their bios.
Gonna start by saying that Cephlani familiars are made from a very specific, living ink. Though they end up looking like tattoos after a little time, the ink is actually first injected into the Cephlani-- well beyond the dermal layer of skin where a tattoo is supposed to be.
Once this happens, the next time the Cephlani goes to sleep, they're whisked into a sort of dreamscape. (yes, for those of you that know Shilo, it's just a different area of the dreamscape where his Dreamers are kept.) In this dreamscape, they can convene with what are essentially a type of spirit, that takes the form of different animals and beasts. Generally, the way it works from there, is that the Cephlani and a beast choose each other outright, which results in a bond being formed, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, a Cephlani instead chooses a beast one-sidedly (Generally the more powerful ones are this way), and they then have to prove themselves in some way, to get that beast to agree to bond with them. If they succeed, the bond is completed. If it doesn't succeed, it can do some fairly major damage to the Cephlani-- if not outright kill them, depending.
Anyway, when they next awaken after that, the ink will have risen to become visible in a form more similar to a stylized tattoo version of the beast. It can move about as it pleases anywhere on the Cephlani's body, including shrinking or growing to take up more or less space. As the bond ages, the familiar will be able to leave their Cephlani partner's body as they please as well (unless they're deliberately being held back), but at first they can only leave when they're called to do so. Outside of the Cephlani's body, they maintain their more tattoo-esque appearance, albeit in a three dimensional form.
Most Cephlani have multiple familiars, with the average for an adult being between three, and six. For example, Callan and Ellyas' familiars are below!
Callan's familiars:
Thistle - A raven, and Callie's first familiar. Typically can be found sitting on his shoulder, both when he's in and outside Callan's body. It's pretty rare that he's in though; he's a sweet and social boy!
Nessie - She generally takes the form of a small, fan tailed fish, and usually sits on the inside of one of Callie's wrists. Outside of his body however, she's a massive isonade that, because she takes so much of Callan's energy, is only called out for emergencies.
Oisin - A wyvern (She looks like Legiana from m.onster hun.ter, if you want a ref) that Callan bonded to as part of his ceremony to become sworn brothers with Ellyas. Likes to stay on Callie's back.
Yula - She looks similar to a red bellied black snake, but is only about 8 inches long. She's Callie's newest familiar, and have only been together for about two years. She moves around a lot, but will commonly peek out from under the collar of Callan's shirt when he's moving around.
Ellyas' familiars:
Kiwi and Lychee - Came together, so they count as one familiar. Kiwi looks like a lesser sac-winged bat, while Lychee looks similar to a Honduran white bat. Both actually get to be five or six feet tall when outside of Ellyas' body, but remain small, otherwise. Tend to stay either around his upper shoulder blades, or around his collarbone.
Iona - Essentially a black leopard. She likes to take the form of a kitten, so she can be spoiled, and is kind of a brat. Stays outside of El's body more often than not, but hangs around on El's back otherwise.
Ham - A beast that looks somewhere between a werewolf and a grizzly bear. Has a pink nose, which is why El named him Ham. Iona pushes him around a lot, so where he stays when inside El's body tends to change fairly often.
Crem - A wyvern (He looks like Nargacuga from m.onster hu.nter, again for ref purposes) that Ellyas bonded to as part of his ceremony to become sworn brothers with Callan. Tends to stay on one of El's arms.
Bubs - Actually more of an elemental than anything, and as such, their form tends to change between different aquatic mammals. Tends to favor a tiny whale, or-- more often-- a seal or sea lion. Likes to be on El's wrist, to mimic Oisin, because she looks up to her.

Lesser dog-like bat (Peropteryx macrotis) Also known as: Peter’s sac-winged bat
The lesser dog-like bat is a small bat, measuring about 6 cm (2.4 in) in head-body length, with a tail about 1.4 cm (0.55 in) long, with the females being slightly larger than the males. Lesser dog-like bats are found in the south from eastern Veracruz and Oaxaca in Mexico, throughout Central America. Lesser dog-like bats feed primarily on small beetles and flies. Colonies are typically small, with less than 15 individuals, although the bats may share their roosts with various other species. Such colonies often contain only a single male.
Classification Animalia - Chordata - Mammalia - Eutheria - Boreoeutheria - Laurasiatheria - Scrotifera - Chiroptera - Microchiroptera - Emballonuroidea - Emballonuridae - Emballonurinae - Peropteryx - P. macrotis

Lesser Sac-Winged Bat (Saccopteryx leptura)
This fellow is wearing a dastardly expression, but that’s probably due to squinting from the photographer’s light being shined in his face. I’m not totally happy with this image because I really wasn’t able to capture the extent of the adorable snub-nose they have... oh well.
I saw these guys roosting on trees in Belize once and I’ve been enchanted by them ever since. They roost in small groups in neat little bat queues along tree trunks. They’re one of the few bats visible sleeping in broad daylight, as long as you know how to pick them out from their camouflage against the tree bark.

Knights Academy Series: Ecology Reports: Wyverns
There are two main types of wyverns: Traditional, and Quadruped, also sometimes called Pseudo wyverns. Traditional wyverns have two hind legs and two wings, having a more bird-like structure, while Quadruped wyverns are more bat-like in structure, with their wings also functioning as forelimbs.
Mountain Wyverns: A classic example of a Traditional wyvern, these large, flying reptilians make their nests high up on craggy mountainsides, flying down to the lower valleys to find prey. Their hooked talons are great for snatching prey and hanging on to them tightly, while their spike-studded tail can inject a toxic venom that paralyzes and eventually kills the prey within minutes. They also possess a flame sac in their body that allows them to breathe fire hot enough to cook almost anything alive. Highly territorial and cunning, these wyverns should not be underestimated, even by the most veteran knights.
Desert Wyverns: Unlike most other wyverns, these Traditionals are almost entirely herbivorous, moving in herds and flying from place to place to munch on cacti and other desert vegetation. They can go for weeks without food or water, much like a camel. They’re also more skittish than their carnivorous cousins, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that they can’t fight back! Using their thick, bony skulls like a battering ram, these wyverns will charge when threatened, ramming into the threat with enough force to smash large boulders. They also have a knack for using their muscular tail to batter their opponents. On an interesting note, the Moriyan military has actually tamed and bred a good number of these wyverns for use as mounts.
Fox Wyverns: Named for the fact that they resemble saber-toothed foxes, these Quadrupedal wyverns are about the size of a dog and travel in packs of 10-15 members. They live in the savannah areas of the world, where they use their numbers and teamwork to take down game much larger than they are. It helps that they can spit a potent neurotoxin, though.
Saberclaw Wyverns: Making their nests deep in the jungle, these Quadrupedal wyverns are covered almost entirely in deep green fur, patterned with dark stripes to help them blend into the foliage. With large foreclaws and large fangs, Saberclaw Wyverns are considered the apex predator of the jungle, stalking almost any prey it can find and taking it out with a quick pounce and a suffocating bite to the throat. They are solitary creatures, only seeking others of its kind during mating season. They also give live birth, usually raising their kitten for several years before it goes off on its own. Meeting a Saberclaw is a dangerous encounter for any knight.
Proudmane Wyverns: The king of the savannah, the Proudmane Wyvern is a tawny-furred quadruped with a spike-studded tail and the face of a lion. These predators live in prides of 10-20 members, usually led by an alpha male, who sports a scarlet or sometimes burgundy mane. While all males have manes, the alpha’s is always the fullest and most vibrantly colored. Most females do not have manes, though there are reports of females who, after taking the role of alpha, grew the same luxurious mane as their male counterparts. These wyverns are pack hunters, and are adept at taking down large prey with a volley of spikes from its tail, which hampers the victim before the pride stalks or swoops in for the kill. Its favorite food, despite the danger, are Savannah Unicorns. Territorial fights between alpha Proudmanes tend to be extremely short and vicious affairs.
Treeshadow Wyverns: These dark, green-flecked quadrupedal wyverns are dangerous ambush predators, stalking through the deep forests of the world. With the strongest bite in the wyvern family, these stealth killers take down their prey quickly and efficiently with a single bite to the skull, before taking their dinner up to the trees to eat. Treeshadow Wyverns will hunt nearly anything, even Lesser Forest Unicorns, but even they won’t touch the much larger Greater Forest Unicorn. Some witnesses have even seen Treeshadow Wyverns take down trolls and heft their bodies up into the trees.

Lesser Horseshoe Bat
There are currently known to be 9 species of bats found in Ireland at present and the Lesser Horseshoe Bat is one of the most commonly known species on the island. The Lesser Horseshoe Bat gets its name because of the horsehoof-shaped skin that surrounds its nostrils!
Distinctive horseshoe shaped skin surrounding the nostrils
The one distinction to be made other than the size and horse-shoed nostrils is that the Lesser Horseshoe Bat cannot crawl so it must fly. However, like all bats, this species also hangs upside down in caves while resting!
This species hibernate in roosts. The term ‘roost‘ refers to designated areas that the species choose as their resting space!
Although like all bats, they are known to be cave-dwellers, this species have been found in attics of buildings during the summer months and underground caves during the winter months when they go into hibernation for several of the colder months!
Lesser Horseshoe Bats mostly eat insects such as midges, moths, flies and lacewings! These are the types of insects that are most commonly found near the dwellings of these bat species such as woodlands and near rivers.
The breeding season for this species occurs in the autumn when the weather becomes warmer. The female can choose when to become pregnant post intercourse, as the females can retain the sperm in order to ensure the birth will be during the most optimal months of the year!
The female will begin to construct a roost in preparation for the new offspring the following April and will give birth between mid-June and early August. The male does not play a part in rearing the offspring.  The offspring will begin to exercise their wings after a month but will stay feeding off of the mother for about 6 weeks.
Bats make calls as they fly and listen to the returning echoes to build up a sonic map of their surroundings!
The bat can tell how far away something is by how long it takes the sounds to return to them. These calls are usually pitched at a frequency too high for humans to hear by ear!
The Lesser Horseshoe Bat is known to be the only bat species on the island that is capable of reaching echo-ing frequencies between 105 kHz and 120 kHz higher than other bat species!
  Conservation Status:
The Lesser Horseshoe Bat species are found in Ireland across six main counties; Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Cork and Kerry!
Map showing the distribution of the Lesser Horseshoe Bats in Ireland – Taken from the Bat Conservation Ireland Website
Currently it is thought that the populations of this bat species in Ireland is increasing with approximately over 14,000 individuals thought to inhabit the island.
As for many of the native Irish mammals, this species are protected under the Wildlife Act 1976 and the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000. This species is also protected under the EC Directive on Conservation of Natural Habitats and the EU Habitats Directive. This level of European protection means that there are Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) designated across Ireland and within other EU countries for this species.
There are many wildlife organisations in Ireland that manage these bat species’ populations such as the Vincent Wildlife Trust (VWT) and the Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT). However one of the most notable organisations is the Bat Conservation Ireland group.
Interesting Facts:
Body Temperature: During hibernation, these bats will reduce their natural body temperature of 35ºC to the same temperature of the underground cave they are hibernating in – usually around 8ºC or less! (This is done to save energy while hibernating).
Girl Gang: It is common for female lesser horseshoe bats to ‘hang out’ together, especially around the time they give birth! When people find bats congregating in groups together it is usually all females that are near their due date and females that haven’t mated yet!
Worldwide Family: There are 71 different horseshoe bat species known globally but the Lesser Horseshoe Bat is the only horseshoe bat species in Ireland.
Disease: All bat species are known to carry the Rabies Virus – this includes the Lesser Horseshoe Bat species in Ireland! The Rabies Virus is incredibly dangerous to humans because there is a 100% mortality rate in humans who show symptoms!
However, this species is incredibly important for biodiversity and ecosystem balance as they suppress populations of nuisance insects such as midges and flys!
Species of the Day: Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus Hipposideros) Lesser Horseshoe Bat There are currently known to be 9 species of bats found in Ireland at present and the Lesser Horseshoe Bat is one of the most commonly known species on the island.
