James Sidney Edouard, Baron Ensor (13 April 1860 – 19 November 1949)[1] was a Belgian painter and printmaker, an important influence on expressionism and surrealism who lived in Ostend for most of his life. He was associated with the artistic group Les XX.

“ Sul carro era stato caricato tutto quello che ci poteva stare, anche la macchina da cucire e la bicicletta, anche la damigiana piccola piena di vino. Quindi la porta di casa era stata chiusa. L’aveva chiusa la madre con molta cura, e prima di legare la chiave alla cintura del suo vestito essa si era più volte assicurata che fosse chiusa bene. E poi erano rimasti vicino al carro, di fronte alla porta chiusa. Erano rimasti là fermi un poco, senza far niente perché non c’era più niente da fare, ma pareva loro di dover aspettare chi sa che cosa. E infine il vecchio aveva detto: «Avanti!» con voce solenne, come se fosse risorto in lui l’antico spirito dei capi che guidavano le tribù nelle trasmigrazioni dei popoli. E il figlio Nino aveva incitato i buoi più volte, portando il carro dietro la casa e poi sulla carrareccia che conduceva alla strada grande. E allora la madre aveva camminato in fretta per raggiungere il suo uomo che stava in testa, e insieme e vicini andarono avanti verso la strada. E dietro veniva il carro guidato dal figlio Nino, che senza posa stimolava i buoi con la voce e col lungo bastone. E dietro il carro, dopo la vacca legata che camminava sonnolenta, venivano la ragazza Effa, e la Rossa, che portava in braccio il suo piccolo figlio addormentato. E intanto il cielo sopra la linea dei monti si era fatto chiaro e dorato. «Guarda, Rossa» disse la ragazza Effa. «Deve essere nata la luna.» E la madre, che camminava dall’altra parte del carro accanto al suo uomo, disse: «Guarda, Mangano. Dev’essere nata la luna. Tra poco ci vedremo meglio.» “
