Tatooine
A/N: This is for the #LegendsFamily event! I’m like an hour late from my timezone, but oh well. So this is my first time writing Legends fic, and I literally haven’t read these books in, oh, six years. So I am kind of just winging the details. Like I genuinely don’t remember how much Luke and co. know about Anakin’s history. This takes place before the Dark Nest Trilogy, so Ben is like 7.
“Dad, what does “Skywalker” mean?” Ben asked, looking up suddenly from the datapad he was pretending to study from. They’d been on the Jade Shadow in hyperspace for three days now, travelling on some Jedi business or other. His mom and dad had been spending a lot of their time meditating and running lightsaber drills, but Ben didn’t do that Jedi stuff. So Mara had told him to start doing some of his history reading while she took a nap. He’d rather stare at a wall than read another word.
His father, who had been quietly meditating, opened his eyes to look at Ben with calm speculation. “Are you asking where the name Skywalker comes from?” Luke clarified.
Ben nodded. “It’s kind of a weird name, isn’t it? It sounds like the name of some Holodrama hero.” He paused. “Which you kind of are, aren’t you?” he realized with a bit of a laugh.
Ben understood why his family didn’t like to talk about, well, their family, what with the evil father, but he couldn’t help but be curious. And since he knew his mother didn’t know any of her own history, he had to turn to his dad.
Luke got up and walked to the table where Ben was studying. Ben frowned. That meant this conversation was going to be “serious”.
“My Aunt Beru said that Skywalker was a slave name on Tatooine,” Luke began slowly. Ben put down his datapad so he could listen properly.
Luke continued. “She said that people with names like mine and like hers, Whitesun, were named by slaves long ago. It was apparently a way of leading them to a better future. She said that my grandmother, who was a slave for most of her life, told her that she had wondered if our ancestor had seen some great destiny for my father, who was also born a slave, and had seen that he would walk the skies and bring freedom to Tatooine.” He sighed. “I guess she was wrong.”
“But he did,” Ben protested.
Luke stared at him. “He did?”
Ben shrugged. “Sure. He saved you by killing the Emperor, which brought about the end of the Empire and the rise of the New Republic, which abolished slavery in the territories. And even if he didn’t, Aunt Leia helped abolish slavery, and she’s a Skywalker too. So your grandmother was right.”
His father had a strange, glistening look in his eye, as he got up and walked over to stand behind Ben and ruffled his hair. “You’re right. She was right.” He wrapped his arms around Ben from behind and gave him a quick hug. “You’re a pretty smart kid, you know that?”
Ben beamed. “Well, that’s what happens when you’re not raised on a moisture farm in the middle of nowhere.”
Luke laughed and released him. “You’ve been listening too much to your mother.”
“I highly doubt that,” Mara said, emerging blearily from the captain’s quarters that she shared with Luke. Both Ben and Luke turned to look at her.
“What are you two talking about?,” she asked, coming up and giving Ben a kiss on the forehead and a quick hair tussling.
“Mom!” Ben complained, trying brushing his curls back into place.
Luke greeted Mara with a quick kiss. “We were just talking about the Skywalker name and Tatooine.” He informed her as she pulled out a chair to sit next to Ben at the table.
“Oh?” Mara said, with some interest. “What about it?”

Part 1
Jaina Solo sat looking out over the Coruscant skyline trying to remember when she’d last stopped and actually looked at it.
It had to have been before the War. The Vong War she amended to herself. At only 32, she’d already been in two wars. Two wars that had claimed two brothers.
Shoving that thought to the back of her mind, Jaina tried to note the changes she saw from what she remembered. It was hard to focus because at the time she’d been sitting with her brothers just before she and… Jacen were to leave for Yavin IV to begin their Jedi training.
A lifetime ago.
Then as now, the skyways were full of air traffic going about its business. But Jaina thought there was less than before the Vong conquest and terraforming. But Coruscant was still the never-ending, never sleeping, sprawl of life that was considered the center of the galaxy.
Back then she’d been young and full of life. Excited to be starting her training but a little trepidatious to be leaving Anakin behind.
They were a team. The three of them. Even as much as she and Jacen groaned about their little brother tagging along, it was the three Solo children vs the galaxy—or at least the grown-ups. They stood together more often then they stood against each other.
Jaina had felt invincible. She hadn’t even been a Jedi yet but had held the belief that she could do anything. Become anything.
And just what had she accomplished? She had let one brother die and had killed the other. Pieces of her soul lost to save the galaxy. She wasn’t sure it had been worth it.
Looking away from the skyline and down to the object in her hands, she rotated it back and forth, trying to dispel her dark thoughts. As if looking at it from a new angle would somehow change what it was. Cleanse what she’d done with it. But it didn’t help. Her traitorous thoughts went from dark to melancholy.
The cylinder had never been smooth, even when she’d found it in the depths of the Jedi Academy on Yavin IV. It had once been part of an x-wing yoke, which appealed to her younger self and her love of flying. The rest of the circuitry had been scavenged and restored by her from varying other components around the temple complex. All of it was special but easily replaceable.
It was the heart of her lightsaber that she loathed, yet could never part with.
The violet crystal that she had forged and shaped with hand and mind to be perfect in every respect, to be in tune with only her mind. Her will.
The glowing electric purple blade the crystal produced was now a part of her nightmares.
The smell of his burnt flesh as her saber moved effortlessly through muscle and bone, the feel of his lifeforce, disappearing from a part of her that had never been alone. She’d killed her brother with this blade. Her twin. Her best friend.
“I DIDN’T!” Jaina screamed to passing traffic, knowing no one could hear her. “I killed Darth Caedus! Not Jacen, not him, I could never hurt Jace…”
The tears were falling unbidden down her cheeks as she sucked in a ragged breath and stood, lightsaber clenched in her right hand.
Another scream escaped her throat, primal and full of rage and sorrow, as she cocked her arm and threw her lightsaber into the void between Coruscant’s skyscrapers.
Crumpling back down into a ball, Jaina cried the tears she hadn’t shown her mother or father. Hadn’t even let herself feel until now.

This ended up being more complex then I thought so I’m breaking this up into 2 parts. I’ll post part 2 after the Legends Skywalker Family Fanworks Week is over.
