silver week: tohoku
september 17-23

i decided i was going to try and tackle all of the tohoku region over the course of silver week, and boy it was a Time(TM). i have a goal of visiting all 47 prefectures before i leave next year. covid really messed up my progress, but i’m back at it and i’m happy to say with the completion of this trip i have reached 35 prefectures visited! however this trip was a lot lol.
i had to leave a day early to avoid the typhoon heading for kyushu (at the time it was a category 5 supertyphoon) because all of the trains shut down. literally all of them. so i ended up leaving hastily and i forgot my passport, which i needed to get the rail pass i had planned to buy for tohoku. usually residents can’t get rail passes but this is one of eight passes available to us! but since i forgot my passport, i found out that i could not receive the rail pass and i might have broken down in front of the train staff because i was so stressed and didn’t want to spend more than double what i planned to spend. but that’s what i ended up doing. i figured screw it, i’m here now, i’m not coming back, i am just gonna spend the money to make sure i am able to visit all of the region.
unfortunately there were further complications with the typhoon coming up through tohoku and causing some train shenanigans that i didn’t want to mess with since i was in an unfamiliar place. so the above are the only photos i was able to get of morioka (iwate), sendai (miyagi) and fukushima (fukushima). you can even see how full the river was in morioka because that photo was taken the afternoon after the typhoon rolled through and all the warnings petered out. the typhoon cost me a day of travel, which means i sacrificed my day in fukushima on the 22nd. i was supposed to go to aizu-wakamatsu, but the money situation and the weather situation caused me to change my destination. i was able to go to fukushima station though, and i did go out and walk around for a bit, but that’s it. i’m still counting that as a visit 😂
i’m saying all of this because usually my trips are really well planned and executed. i don’t forget things, and i plan my routes and timing down to the minute to make sure i can 1. afford it and 2. do what i want to do before things close. this trip just straight up didn’t go well. it happens sometimes, even to people who plan and have experience. HOWEVER if you check out the rest of my silver week posts you’ll see i was still able to have a great time and see a bunch of really cool new things, and the disappointment and mistakes didn’t ruin things like i might have figured they would in the moment.

Wow, Tokyo! You’re so lucky!
Ehhhhhhh hang on a sec. I get this response almost every time, and it bothers me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy where I live and especially where I work, but I’m not living it up like you probably think I am. I’m living on an English teacher’s salary (even worse - an assistant English teacher’s salary) and I have student loans to pay, and if I’m going to be honest, I thought I would get a rural placement to help me manage the economics of it all. I’m making the most of a surprise.
Uh...okay. You say you enjoy where you live and work - where’s that?
I live in Setagaya, the westernmost of the 23 wards of Tokyo (like a borough of NYC). For context, I’m a 15-minute train ride from Shinjuku, the busiest train station in the world and my gateway to the rest of Tokyo. I’ve fondly nicknamed Setagaya “rich people suburbia” because it is - this is where the commuters with nice salaries settle their families. I work at a high school within walking distance of my apartment, as an assistant language teacher (ALT).
How did you get this job with this high school?
I applied to the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program during my last year of university. I’m no JET expert, but as I understand it, it works like this: you’re hired by the Japanese government and they assign you a Board of Education (BOE) to work for, and the BOE in turn assigns you a school. You can list your preference of location in the interview, but ultimately you go where they decide they need you.
Any idea why you ended up in Tokyo?
Unlike most Tokyo JETs, I think I can point to two reasons: (1) I mentioned in my interview that I wanted to have access to a doctor to refill medicines, and (2) I mentioned in my application essay that I have a Japanese friend who came from Tokyo and who inspired me to do JET in the first place. When it was time to list my placement preference, I just said “not Hokkaido and not Kyushu” to eliminate the hottest and coldest climates I could think of. I guess I got the true middle, huh?
So what’s your high school like, then? Did you at least request a high school level?
I did! All of my teaching experience (running a summer camp in Lithuania, tutoring high school and university peers, teaching English to a 50+-year-old Chinese woman, TAing for an introductory astronomy class) involved high school level or higher, so I’m glad I got the level I know best. My high school is a mid-level school within the BOE1, which means the majority of my students will go to decent universities after they graduate. I’d say it reminds me of my high school - after all, there’s just enough expectation for excellence but just enough laxness to let students explore their passions - but it’s also 75% girls, so that’s a change. I suspect I was assigned to my school in particular because I have an astronomy teaching background, and my school has (duh duh duh) an astronomy club and a rooftop observatory! Not to mention a nap room for the teachers, not that I was really looking for that when I signed up.
Sounds cool! Do you speak any Japanese?
I showed up in Japan able to carry on a basic, grammatically incorrect conversation, and I suspect I’ll be at this level for a long while. I’m slowly accumulating vocabulary and grammar, and you’ll see me getting alternatively excited and frustrated by both in this blog. I studied linguistics in university, so I’m probably more excited about these things than you’re used to.
So what’s the point of this blog?
I need a place to keep track of all my anecdotes and tidbits. I tried to go without a blog for the first six months of my stay, but every time I’d tell a story to a friend/family member/friend who is like a family member, they’d be like, “Why aren’t you writing this down? This is blog material!” We’ll see about that. Plus, if anyone (e.g. my successor) has any questions about JET, it’ll be nice to have a body of writings to point to, instead of unloading every story I have. I’m quite good at that, but it takes a lot of time.
What kind of stuff can I expect to see in this blog?
Not a lot of pictures, because they’d take me ages to manage. When I backpacked through Europe I kept a long journal-style blog, but that also took ages to manage. So I guess I’m going for short stories and insights about (a) my experiences as a teacher, (b) my experiences as a foreigner in Japan, (c) my experiences learning Japanese, and (d) my time traveling around Japan and Asia, if/when I get to it.
Are you planning to post consistently?
God no. But I’ll try to post a link to new posts on Facebook around once a month.
What are the biggest things you want to do on JET?
Let’s see, by the time I finish my contract in July 2019, I want to have:
Traveled within Japan (I’m thinking mostly big cities, but I’m open to towns if anyone has a specific recommendation)
Traveled around Asia (Korea, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India...)
Gotten my Japanese fluency to the point where I can read most signs and have a conversation where I understand everything the other person is saying. Don’t hold me to that
Made friends with JETs and Japanese people alike
Found a way to connect my JET experience to my next steps. (After JET I want to go to grad school and study education, and then work for a university or an education-based nonprofit)
Seen and done enough in Tokyo to be sentimental when I leave.

Fair. Okay, I come from Colorado, I’m 23 years old, and I studied international affairs and linguistics in university. I’ve been to 27 countries total (US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and most of Europe) and lived in 5, and I can speak fluent English and French, basic Japanese and German, and a smattering of words and phrases in Spanish, Lithuanian, and assorted other languages. My hobbies are reading (books and fanfiction), writing (almost exclusively fanfiction), blogging on tumblr, and stargazing (yes, even in Tokyo). I seem to attract bizarre nerd friends, I adore my younger brother even though he’s too old to like it being advertised, and my family has had a total of eight pet ferrets.
Do you like anime? (Just because you live in Japan and all)
Ha ha, yes, I like some anime. My favorite is Hetalia, but I also like Fullmetal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club, and Assassination Classroom. I have friends trying to pull me into Attack on Titan and Voltron: Legendary Defender (not a Japanese anime, but I’m counting it anyway). I'll be the first to admit that I’m not nearly as up to date as I should be, but I can have a passable conversation about half of the popular ones because all my friends and my tumblr dash buzz about them.
One last thing: can I come to Tokyo and crash on your couch?

World Beer Terminal Kaen The Bottom Line
I was pleasantly surprised with World Beer Terminal Kaen – it had everything I wanted in a bar, and I would happily go back there again, just to sit on the huge balcony area and enjoy the sun setting down in the distance. The beers made by Diamond Brewing, the brewery for World Beer Terminal Kaen, were also a good surprise too. The whole place is non-smoking and has free Wifi along with no table charges. Moreover, with the beer flight also proving great value for money, you can easily spend a good few hours here – as I did – without getting bored of the excellent variety on tap. There is plenty of English on the menu as well as World Beer Terminal Kaen having English-speaking staff, and those vegetarians among you will also be happy to here that there are also plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices too to eat. All-in-all, a great little find on our travels around Kumamoto.
World Beer Terminal Kaen The Full Review
For a belated birthday bash, I wanted some beers. Somewhere with a nice view, somewhere to sit outside and enjoy the warm weather Kumamoto was having, and just relax. World Beer Terminal Kaen appeared on our map and also some searches for having a seating area outside, though I was suspect about their beers. I had read some reviews about the place being a bit offish and pricey, and to try some of the other places in Kumamoto, but I wasn’t going to be dissuaded so easily! I wanted my beers and I wanted my patio seating too!
World Beer Terminal Kaen is located a few minutes away from Kumamoto Castle, and the nearest station to it is Torichosuji on the Kumamoto City Tram system. It can be a little hard to find as the entrance is a tad inconspicuous with just a small sign outside the front door giving on the merest of hints. Make sure you do take a look at the map below before you go and you should be fine once you find the building. When you do get inside, don’t be alarmed by the small entrance – World Beer Terminal Kaen opens up with a huge outside wood deck that is covered in the winter to allow people to keep warm under the space heaters, or cool with the breeze in the spring and summer. There is so much space that there are over 100 seats – I gave up counting after the third beer – with the majority of the seating being outside. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge, and also free WiFi too.
In terms of beer, despite the name, World Beer Terminal Kaen heavily leans towards domestic beers, with the majority of those being from their brewpub operation, Brewery Kaen / Diamond Brewing. Beers come in two sizes – regular (240ml) from ¥600 and full (473ml) from ¥900 for a total of 12 taps of beer. Prices include tax, which makes World Beer Terminal Kaen one of the cheapest places to drink in Kumamoto. There is also a beer flight option which gets you any three regular size beers plus a snack for ¥1,800. It was supposedly for standing only but I was seated and managed to order it without any issue. The beers are also well-served without too much head and in well-cleaned glasses too. I didn’t notice any happy hour nor any takeaway option on the menus though.
There is a comprehensive menu as well at World Beer Terminal Kaen with a wide variety of cuisines covered as well as plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. All of the menus have enough English on there for people to order, and the shop staff also spoke English too to help things go smoothly.

QUALIFYING STRUCTURE
Skaters qualify for the Japanese National Championships by competing at one of six regional (or “block”) championships and one of two sectional championships (Eastern and Western). Top finishers at regionals advance to sectionals, and top finishers at sectionals advance to nationals. The number of qualifying skaters in each discipline and competition is determined annually by the JSF.
Japan holds three separate national championships for three different levels: novice, junior, and senior. Levels are separated by age. There are two categories of novice, Novice A (older) and Novice B (younger). To qualify for Novice Nationals, skaters compete in the novice category at regional championships. Novice skaters perform only free skates and do not compete at sectionals. To qualify for Junior Nationals, skaters compete in the junior category at regionals and sectionals, and to qualify for Senior Nationals, skaters compete in the senior category at regionals and sectionals. Top finishers at Novice Nationals are invited to participate in Junior Nationals, and top finishers at Junior Nationals are invited to compete at Senior Nationals. Pair and ice dance teams do not compete at regionals, only sectionals.
Seeded skaters are chosen by the JSF to advance directly to Nationals without competing at qualifying competitions. Generally, medalists at the previous National Championships are seeded. Seeded skaters can still compete at regionals/sectionals if they want to, but they will not count towards the quota of skaters who advance. Skaters who would normally need to compete at regionals/sectionals may be exempt from doing so if they have an international competition during or within one week of their qualifying event.

Dr. STONE TV Anime Rolls Out OP / ED Theme Song Performers
The opening and ending theme song performers and the Japanese broadcast schedule have been revealed for Dr. STONE, an upcoming TV anime based on the science fiction adventure manga written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi about a group of young survivors trying to rebuild human civilization after the entire world is inexplicably petrified.
The opening theme, entitled "Good Morning World!", is performed by BURNOUT SYNDROMES. The ending theme, entitled "LIFE", is performed by Rude-α.

The original Dr. STONE manga is serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump manga magazine, and an English language version is also available from Viz Media, who describe the story of Dr. STONE as follows:
One fateful day, all of humanity was petrified by a blinding flash of light. After several millennia, high schooler Taiju awakens and finds himself lost in a world of statues. However, he’s not alone! His science-loving friend Senku’s been up and running for a few months and he's got a grand plan in mind—to kickstart civilization with the power of science!
The Dr. STONE TV anime is directed by Shinya Iino and features animation production by TMS Entertainment. The series will stream on Crunchyroll as part of the Summer 2019 simulcast lineup, and Dr. STONE will also broadcast in Japan according to the following TV schedule:

I've been to Nara before but didn't go visit the Great Buddha back then. I happened to be in Nara yesterday, and my friends asked me if I've ever been there, so I said no and that, if we have time, I would like to see the deer again lol.
Our main goal was 10km from the park, so we visited the Buddha.

I bought a metal box at the Churaumi aquarium and the senbei inside look like this:
They don't taste as good though, the ones with sesame are a bit better. Well, I only bought it because of the box anyway lol.
(Metal boxes are rare nowadays, most souvenirs are made with paper boxes. You know, things that can be thrown away and are cheaper.)
