My reaction to T2: Trainspotting 2 (Not quite a review)
“Everything in the street today seems soft focus.”  ― Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting
It’s been twenty years and just in time. Few movies mark moments in my life that summon up so many memories of yesterday for me.  My room was stacked with VHS tapes growing up; bootlegged tapes, Suncoast video tapes, borrowed tapes, Blank tapes filled with random recordings from PPV, Cable television and whatever was playing late at night on television. I would come home and watch my favorite movies. Some of those titles were Hackers (1995), KIDS (1995), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Bound by Honor (1993), Nowhere (1997) and others. Trainspotting was a mainstay and I believe I watched my bootleg copy so much that I ended up either purchasing a new VHS tape or just permanently borrowing a friends copy before letting them know I had it, if I even told them.
Trainspotting is my Breakfast Club. Yes, I know that sounds bizarre. I know Breakfast Club is considered this untouchable event in retro history that everyone holds close to their hearts but, nope, it was for me. It didn’t speak to me. If I had detention on a weekend, I just wouldn’t show up. There were no archetypes in my twelve years of private Catholic school in Manhattan. My childhood resembled more Jim Carroll’s Basketball Diaries than Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; a little bit of Juice(1992) with a little bit of Revenge of the Nerds, The Wild Life (1984), Style Wars (1983) and Drugstore Cowboy (1989).
There is no mystery to be deduced that when I was fifteen years old I was already an occasional recreational drug user. No, it was just fun.
I was already in possession of a fake I.D. from the infamous Playland arcade on Times Square and I was soon to upgrade to an actual college issued I.D. through some friendships with college employees at the time. I was attending my first rave parties and still going to Punk Rock shows at ABC No Rio, CBGB’s, Wetlands, Coney Island High and The Pyramid club. I was a little delinquent in a private school uniform. Playing Dungeons & Dragons and Cyberpunk 2020 with my friends and spending hours in the back of a bodega playing Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom and the holy of holy’s an SNK arcade cabinet with Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown and King of Fighters. We collected comic books and traded Marvel Masterpiece cards. We would pick the backpacks of other kids for their Japanese Model kit magazines and stupid stuff like that. $10 dollars was never ignored if your two fingers could pick them.
Train turnstiles were hopped. Bodegas were shoplifted of snacks, juices, 40oz’s and VHS adult films out of the boxes in the back of the store. It was a time before caution. It was a time when you did things to get by. Before social media and interactive media, it was interactive life. Never hesitated, we wanted life. Choose life. We said, “Yes”.
Yes to mistakes, to regrets, to broken bones, to bloody stains on the edges of our dollar bills and mystery powder caked up in the zeroes and eights of our credit cards, to having two beepers, to party chat lines, public access television and late night smut and filth, to being comatose on a couch for hours watching your favorite shows and music videos and pausing during commercials. Saying “Yes” to street drugs and improvised highs: whippits, glue, Tylenol PM’s with a double deuce of Colt 45. Say, “Yes” to conspiracy theory before realizing that it was performance art; either that or the chemtrails and Bilderberg scrambled your brain into Jim Jones Kool-Aid. Yes to extroversion, promiscuity, experimentation, laziness, high hopes, dial up connections, dvd’s, giant fat televisions and remote controls that controlled every appliance in the living area except the clap-on, ski-goggles in the summertime, Champion sportswear, Karl Kani, Everlast, Levi’s, trans fat, MSG, Michael Jordan, British Knights, Double Dare, Clarissa Explained it all and No one knew where Carmen San Diego was. That was the time when Trainspotting was in one of my multiple viewed movies, after school. Trainspotting captured a moment in time. And T2: Trainspotting 2 was made just for me.
Trainspotting 2 isn’t the average sequel. It’s a labor of love and a perfect sequel. Taking place and filmed twenty years after the first film and based loosely on the book sequel Porno. The film is about memory; regret the middle passage of masculinity and coming to terms with your mistakes and past life.
Marc Renton after having what appears to be a heart attack has returned to Scotland from Amsterdam to face his past and make amends with the same friends he stole twelve thousand pounds from. Sick Boy is a faded image of his former self; an aged smart dressed dandy who likened himself to Sean Connery, now a rundown pub owner who blackmails local officials for money to support his narcotic habit. Spud is still a junkie still battling heroin after numerous relapses and a personal life spiraling down the toilet with an ex-girlfriend who barely can deal with him and a son that he is trying to make proud of him. Finally there’s Frances - Francis Begbie the short tempered psychotic that has been sitting in a prison for twenty years waiting for his chance at parole and dreams of one day confronting the man that betrayed him with the point of his shiv.
If Trainspotting was an adrenaline shot of youthful nihilistic experimental film making then, T2 is a slightly more edible and beautifully filmed work of art that will echo or reference on the original film- like living your life in the shadow of your memories. There is nothing to complain or be angry about T2. It’s a bittersweet experience. It will bring you back to your youth as you continue the adventures of the Skagboys from Leith, Edinburgh.
The cinematography is Amazing. The script writing is just as well executed with characters becoming more drawn out and character arcs more human and relatable; even Begbie.
The soundtrack might be the weakest part of the film. Not that the songs were bad. The songs are good, including remixes of Underworlds “Born Slippy” and Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life”. The soundtrack is good but not as good or era defining as the originals soundtrack or follow up soundtracks.
All in all, I give the film a high recommendation to anyone that remembers seeing the first film or read the book. However, if you are too young then I would recommend watching the original then the book before diving into T2. This is a movie for the fans and not made for commercial success or catered to casual audience members. I still love it no matter what.

Kissimmee & Orlando in April - Events Around Central Florida
Orlando in April brings endless sunshine, unique events, Easter bunnies and an abundance of things to do throughout Central Florida.
So What's the Weather like in Orlando in April?
Orlando in April is perfect weather. There's no extreme conditions to contend with, just lots of sunshine, blue skies and spring is definitely in the air. With an average high of 83°F it's time to pack shorts, T's and flip-flops, but you might need a light jacket or sweater for the odd cooler evening. There might be an occasional rain shower, so keep a poncho handy just in case.
What about Orlando in April for Crowds?
Orlando in April brings Easter crowds and the tail end of Spring Break, which make it a hectic few weeks. Crowd levels will be at peak level until April 8th, make sure you plan ahead. Crowds should be moderate for the rest of April. Check crowd calendars at OrlandoInformer for Universal and Undercover Tourist for all parks. Kenny The Pirate also has great info. And pack a ton of patience when you head to the parks!
There are extended hours during peak weeks, so you'll get to enjoy the parks longer. If you're visiting in the last week of April, when most of the high crowds are gone, you're in for a much quieter time.

Episode 102 : Play With Joy
"Give me a minute, I'll give you my spirit."
- Konny Kon
Another month, another mix to keep your ears nourished! Listen out for Juice Crew appearances and connections throughout the selection, after Manchester witnessed them tear up the stage this month. We've got some soulful numbers, turntable wizardry, and quotables for days. Let's get it started...
Twitter : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
Cesar Comanche : A-Game
With the intro and all that, this is a track that needs to be at the start of a mix, and as such I've been saving it for quite a long time. One of my favourites from the original days of the Justus League, this track is from Cesar's second album "Paper Gods", and is a great ode to working hard in music and not being a hanger-on or a daydreamer; as the title suggests, bring your A-game. 9th Wonder is on the beat, slapping that snare as always!
Kev Brown : The Beat Tape (Instro)
One of the instrumentals from the "Selective Hearing" LP; nothing super complex, just a good example of doing something funky with a handful of elements. The insertion of that "yeah" sample is worth the price of admission!
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo : Letters
Another one I've had in the "to play" list for ages, it's a straight mic workout for G Rap taken from his final album in collaboration with DJ Polo, "Live and Let Die". As an aside, I didn't realise that the album was shelved some time after initial release because of the controversial cover art! Luckily, it got a re-release so you should be able to find it - there are some excellent tracks on there. As with most of the rest of the album, Sir Jinx, best known for his work with Ice Cube, handles the production; a nice funky soul sample forms the basis of the track.
Wordsworth : Feel Me
Hadn't given "The Picture Album" a listen in a long time and had totally forgotten about this Ill Poetic-produced track - I was looking to include something featuring Masta Ace but this got the nod instead, as it were. "Feel me internally"? Hold that thought, we're coming back to it later in the show...
Bumpy Knuckles : Lazy
One of those tunes you can drop on a mixtape or in a club night full of real heads. DJ Premier on the beat with a meat-and-potatoes drum pattern underpinning a disjointed string sample, and Bumpy going in on the mic straight line style. Bonus points for him impression of crying MCs in the intro :) We will definitely return to the "Konexion" album again!
Big Daddy Kane, Jay-Z, ODB : Show & Prove
The full version of this tune from the 1994 "Daddy's Home" album is long! Coming off a loop of the DJ Premier beat, I actually missed off the first three verses (Scoob, Sauce Money, and Shyheim) and jumped in at Kane's appearance. A then mostly-unknown Jay-Z can be heard here with his old style, and ODB shuts it down on the final verse, overwhelming the track with sheer force of personality! Three Brooklyn kings, no question. The sharp-eared amongst you will find the last word on the tune very familiar...
[Pete Rock] All City : Priceless (Instrumental)
I played the vocal version of this many moons ago on episode 12, and Pete Rock's beat fits brilliantly here - a bridge between the explosion that ends the previous cut, and the tempo of the one that follows...
Top Rawmen : Symphony 3000
I'm amongst friends here, so I can admit it - at least partly due to cultural differences, I didn't realise for years that this turntablist crew's name is a pun! Yeroc, Nando, Nomad, Mike c, and Jay Slim brilliantly execute the concept of a turntable version of the Juice Crew classic "The Symphony" on this selection from "Return of the DJ, Volume IV". The beats are sampled/cut/reworked from that 1988 record, and several quotes from the track get sliced and diced here too.
Camp Lo : Cookers
This Ski-produced B-side (you know the deal) from the "Trouble Man" single bangs hard in a specific way that often makes it tough to fit into mixes, but I think this is a good spot for it! There's a detail worth noting on this one - check how Sonny and Geechi start each two-bar phrase of the first verse with their syllables landing dead on each hit of the kick drum.
Diamond D ft. Kurupt and The Alkaholiks : We Are The People Of The World
Diamond just keeps on going - with a record collection and a mind like his, the beats will hopefully keep on coming for a long time yet! His 2014 album "The Diam Piece" is a producer-centred project where he brings in a star-studded roster of guests to bless his beats; on this cut, we get veteran West Coast lyricism from the 'Liks and Kurupt, keeping it positive. I do need to stop giving myself these awkward bar counts to mix with though...
J-Zone ft. Has-Lo : Caddy Coupe
I love seeing people win, so this track works on two levels; firstly, it comes from "Fish 'n' Grits", an excellent album from the latter phase of J-Zone's musical career, and secondly because of the story. I can totally get behind a real-life tale of a man treating himself to a bit of luxury after a hard working life; it's just a genuinely nice story. Philadephia's Has-Lo takes the second verse to expand the theme a little more, and Zone's production (in all senses of the word) is excellent and inventive as always.
Trifeckta : First Time (Janet Jackson Flip)
I wanted to bridge here with something having a bit of 80s style and also some soul, and finally found the right beat on the Producers I Know compilation "The 80s Beat Tape" - which I'm sure we'll visit again. St.Louis'/NYC's Trifeckta dices up some Janet Jackson and tops it off with some skilled drum machine work.
John Legend and The Roots : Hang On In There
Somehow the "Wake Up!" collaborative project slipped by me until recently, despite being years old! It's mostly made up of covers of old soul records, and they're done well. Here's one example, their take on the low-key 1972 classic "Hang On In There" by Mike James Kirkland, with a beautiful groove and a solid message.
Children of Zeus : Rock You Internally
Yet another great cut from Konny Kon and Tyler Daly, both of whom are in fine rhyming style right here - classic tag team vocal styles. No slouches on the boards either, they cook up a quality beat from a classic soul sample. "The Story So Far..." is an essential purchase...and that's just a collection of their past work. The album, when it comes, is really going to be something.
Ill Camille : Take A Ride
Ill Camille is an artist coming out of Los Angeles who gets much respect from those in the know. While her latest LP "Heirloom" is getting rave reviews, here we go all the way back to 2011's "The Pre-Write" for a track which I think features the sadly late Alori Joh ; they collaborated on a version of this track I've seen titled as "Take That Ride". Camille handles her business here lyrically, and the hook is very nicely done as a bonus. I've not got any credits indicating who produced it, but I do like the beat - incidentally, all that EQ/filtering going on towards the end is part of the track itself!
KING : The Greatest
I don't know how many times I've played this track this year, but it's a lot. Paris Strother kills it on this production (as she does on the whole "We Are KING" album), and on the mic along with the other two members for this ethereal and grooving tribute to the great Muhammad Ali. If you're hearing it for the first time, it deserves an immediate rewind - alternatively, watch the excellent 8-bit-styled video :)
Tall Black Guy : Sade's Taboo (Sweetest Taboo Blap-Up)
The brother from another mother (and father) once again shows you how he flips well-known samples into his own head-nodding, shoulder-slumping style!
Craig G : W.F.W.T (What's Fuckin With That)
Ending things on an up note, we take a track from the amazingly titled "I Rap and Go Home" album. The Juice Crew veteran gives you a small window into his life as a live performer..and he loves it! Again, I like to see people win and so it's nice to know that Craig's working life is pretty awesome. Vaporworldz isn't an artist I've heard of before, but this beat is on-point; a light, cheerful head-nodder with a little reggae seasoning in there. I hope Craig G and the rest of the crew left Manchester with happy memories - although we couldn't help much with the weather, sadly.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The Floozies Are Better 4 U: An Interview with The Kings of Electro-Funk
The Floozies are Kings of Electro-Funk. I had the opportunity to catch their set on the Mysteryland last year, and I was blown away. The amount of groove inducing electro-funk has me vibing and dancing uncontrollably. They were one of the funkiest groups I’ve seen live, comparing them to the likes of GRiZ, Big Gigantic, Pretty Lights and other all time greats in the Electro-Funk space. Their sound had a bit more natural POP than the aforementioned greats. Electro-Funk is one of my favorite genres, and The Floozies are at the top of my list – their use of eclectic samples while still maintaining a funk rhythm is both impressive and mesmerizing.
The Floozies are made up two brothers – producer/guitarist Matt Hill and drummer Mark Hill. They’ve played the biggest stages, calling their music party rocking funk – energizing dace floors around the world.  All of The Floozies music can be downloaded for free from www.flooziesduo.com. The two are gearing up for their upcoming album, FUNK JESUS, coming this fall.
They recently released their new single, Better 4 U, and it’s FIRE.
Better 4 U is about the moment when you realize you’ve let someone down, bringing yourself to admit to the mistake made. Doing it more than for self-improvement, but also for the sake of the the people that surround you. When you’re down, it’s important to realize that the people around you are then affected. Yourself and the ones around you deserve the best from you, and this will ultimately lead towards a path of happiness.Positivity and love should be your driving force.
I had the pleasure of interviewing these kings of funk below. You know the drill, click the play button on the soundcloud embed and read the interview below to get the FULL The Floozies experience. The first song on the embed below is their new single, Better 4 U. If you’re into as much electro-funk as I am, The Floozies is a MUST LISTEN.
  INTERVIEW:
Where are you guys from and how has that shaped the musicians you are today?
Kansas. We have both been able to learn from teachers and musicians around us throughout our lives. Learning from them has definitely led us to where we are musically.
What instruments did you play when you were younger?
I played trombone, piano, guitar, bass, a bit of banjo, and of course drums. Matt did all the same except he didn’t play trombone or banjo. He can figure his way through any instrument pretty easily though.
Are there an instruments that you currently wish you COULD play?
I really want to learn flugelhorn! It sounds so dark and lovely and the finger method of trumpet/flugel are really intriguing to me, so I bought a flugelhorn. I haven’t had a chance to dive in yet. I think Russ Liquid is going to give me a lesson next time we are together though.
Tell us the story of how you started creating music on your computer?
We played and traveled as a live looping duo at first. For a long time. We just used a guitar and pedal for Matt and I accompanied with drums. It was incredibly difficult, but it had really great moments. The computer came way late as a means to make the live set better, so live computer creation happened basically once we figured out how it worked and saved up enough money.
Producing on the computer has been happening for a long time! I remember Matt making beats on an old casio keyboard with this way ahead of its time loop record function! We were little kids and he was making world class beats on our sisters cheap keyboard haha! i think thats when it started. Then years later, Matt made an album on a computer a long time before we ever tried to recreate it live. He made some really great albums that we never really even shared as the floozies. He is the type of guy that just keeps trying to figure everything out, so naturally, we have continued producing and also using the computer live.
What was your favorite studio moment when producing your new single, Better 4 U?
For me it was the moment Matt sent me the original vocal idea. Just in a voice message to my phone. I was on my way to the gym and I remember listening to it (10 second clip) of its bare form just over and over and over the whole way. I had goosebumps the entire drive.
What do you like to do when you’re simply hanging out – aside from music
We’ve been best friends since we were babies. Never fought or had problems. So anything really. We like to have our business meetings on the basketball court. We both love playing basketball, exploring cities, seeing cool things. A lot of us hanging out is just sharing ideas and laughing a lot. It’s a dream to tour with each other really.
Who are your musical influences?
Grew up listening to funk bands and some soul (thanks Mom!) such as: kool and the gang, p funk, earth wind and fire, michael jackson, temptations, all the good stuff.
After that, we’ve just pretty much listened to everything we can get! you can find inspiration in so much different music.
I love bluegrass stemming from going to see “The String Cheese Incident” back in the day. Too many to list in that category! We’ve both been influenced by Robert Glasper, Chris Cornell, Lettuce, Rick James, James Brown, D’ Angelo, Tower of Power just to name a few.
Who has been one of your favorite artists to collab with?
Ryan Zoidis from Lettuce. Not only an incredible sax player, but an awesome guy all around. His playing and presence always leave me with a smile.
What are some of your favorite venues to play and why?
All of them have character and beauty individually. We have memories in each one.
What are some of your favorite cities to play-in and why?
All of them have character and beauty individually. Exploring each city has been an incredible experience. I will say we just came back from Portland, Maine, and that whole area is just beautiful and lush and spacious.
Do you have a favorite festival you played this summer?
They were all great, I don’t like to compare moments much if you can’t tell ha. One festival that was different than the others greatly was Electric Forest. We brought out a live band performance for the 1st weekend performance. It was an incredibly challenging and beautiful show for us. The group killed it together and the crowd was really special on that day with us.
What DAW do you use and why?
Logic. It’s what we started with and I think it’s pretty.
You’re a two man group, do each of you have different strengths and weaknesses that play well off each other?
Yeah. Business wise especially! It seems that everything I lack ability for Matt can handle pretty easily and vice versa. I am really good with logistics and handling that side of it, Matt has a really creative big picture side for artwork, direction, merch, etc. Although there are definitely crossovers. Sometimes an artwork or merch idea will be mine. We have a good ability to share ideas and work them out together most especially. Together we make our best ideas in the end.
Live we are both strongest when together. We feed on each other and have so much fun when we play. We always know when to help each other with cues and stuff when things get musically challenging.
What is your favorite MIDI Controller or instrument to produce with right now?
We just got an Harpejii string instrument and its incredibly cool.
Do you have a key production tip for our young producers out there?
Make your own sounds and have fun with it.
What is your favorite color?
Green
What food do you eat the most?
salad at the moment
Do you have a favorite in-studio snack?
tea or coffee ha
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
I like Instagram because its well run and clean and pictures are neat.
