BOTD: Eastern Kingbird
Photo: Andy Reago & Chrissy McClarren
"This species is the only widespread kingbird in the east. Common and conspicuous in summer, it is often seen perched jauntily on a treetop or fence wire, or sallying out with shallow fluttering wingbeats to catch an insect in mid-air. In winter in South America it takes on a different personality, living in flocks in tropical forest and dining on berries."

A rough translation of the dawn chorus.
Most songbirds (especially this kingbird) are very territorial, and singing is how they advertise that territory. Males have “song perches” that mark the borders of their territory. As the name suggests, these are where the bird sits, sings, and keeps watch for trespassers.
In particular, kingbirds are very protective of their breeding grounds— even chasing away hawks! I usually see them in open fields and parks. They’re one of the few tyrant-flycatcher species that are comfortable around human settlements.
(P.S. the song lyrics are from “Solar” by Cosmo Sheldrake.)

Tropical Kingbird by Kip Hutchison
Via Flickr:
A powerfully built flycatcher with a big head and a heavy, long bill. It has pointed but broad wings, and its medium-length tail shows a shallow notch in the center. Forages by catching large flying insects on the wing, sallying out from a favored perch (often a telephone line) and returning to it to consume the prey. Also feeds on fruits, particularly during cooler weather. Perches conspicuously and when nesting flies out to confront many sorts of birds that come too close to the nest.

Nancy Ricigliano in Long Island, New York, captured this image of an eastern kingbird protecting its castle on Thursday. Nancy wrote: "I have been watching this local bald eagle couple for 3 years now. They have 2 juvies this season. Every time they leave the nest or come in with food, a pair of eastern kingbirds attack them, even if they are perched. They must have a nest close by, but I'm unable to see it. I find it amazing how a little bird could be so brave." Indeed! Thank you, Nancy.
