Atlanta Hawks Acquire Tony Snell in Three-Player Deal with Detroit
On November 20th, 2020, the Detroit Pistons traded guard-forward Tony Snell and guard Khyri Thomas to the Atlanta Hawks for center Dewayne Dedmon.
The Detroit Pistons originally acquired guard Khyri Thomas in the 2018 NBA Draft. Selected 38th overall in the draft, the Creighton guard was traded to the Detroit Pistons for two future second round picks in 2021 and 2023.
An efficient offensive weapon at Creighton, Thomas joined the Pistons for Summer League in 2018. He appeared in four exhibition games, racking up 9.5 PPG on 40% from the field and 45.5% from the three-point line. Thomas also put up 2.0 RPG, 1.3 APG and 1.5 SPG in 28.7 MPG.
The Pistons signed Thomas to a three-year minimum deal that was guaranteed the first two years. Detroit was looking to compete after hiring new head coach Dwane Casey.
Thomas saw limited action with the Pistons in his rookie campaign. The Creighton guard played in 26 contests and compiled 2.3 PPG and 0.8 RPG in 7.5 MPG. He spent some time in the G-League with Pistons affiliate Grand Rapids Drive. In 10 games with Grand Rapids, Thomas put up 20.6 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.8 APG and 1.4 SPG in 32.3 MPG.
Detroit was inconsistent during the 2018-19 season, but behind a strong season from star Blake Griffin and center Andre Drummond, the Pistons made the postseason as the eighth seed with a 41-41 record.
Detroit played without Griffin (knee) towards the end of the season. With Griffin out to start the first round, the Pistons were massacred. They were swept in four games by the Milwaukee Bucks even with Griffin making a valiant return in the final two games. Since all the games were blowouts, Thomas saw garbage time, averaging 4.7 PPG in three playoff games.
In the 2019 offseason, Tony Snell was acquired by the Detroit Pistons in a 2019 draft night deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. A solid three-point shooter and defender on the wing, Snell immediately became a starter for a Pistons team hoping to make the playoffs.
Thomas experienced Summer League for a second time. He appeared in five games in Las Vegas and averaged 13.4 PPG on 36.1% shooting, 3.8 RPG, 2.2 APG and 1.8 SPG in 28.1 MPG.
With Griffin out to start the season due to injury, the Pistons struggled. They began the year 4-10 and quickly shifted from competing for the playoffs to sellers. They traded center Andre Drummond to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Griffin missed all but 18 games due to on and off knee problems.
Detroit finished the year 20-46 before the NBA season was shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Once the season resumed in the bubble in Orlando, Florida, the Pistons were not invited since they were too far out of the playoff race.
Thomas had right foot surgery after playing in just two games with Detroit. The injury caused him to miss about three months. He returned in March, and ended the 2019-20 season with 2.1 PPG on 29.4% from the field in eight games and 7.6 MPG. He also averaged 17.0 PPG and 4.0 RPG in two G-League games with the Drive.
Snell started for most of the year and was one of the team’s most reliable players. He played in 59 games (57 starts), and posted 8.0 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 2.2 APG and 0.5 SPG in 27.8 MPG.
As Detroit began to reshuffle its roster heading into the 2020-21 season, Snell and Thomas were dealt to Atlanta. Thomas ended his run in Detroit with averages of 2.3 PPG and 0.6 RPG in 34 career games. The 6-foot-3 guard shot 31% from the field, 31% from the three-point line and 60% from the free-throw line in that time.
The Atlanta Hawks acquired center Dewayne Dedmon for a second time in a trade with the Sacramento Kings. Unhappy in Sacramento, Dedmon received playing time with the Hawks due to center Clint Capela’s absence with an injury. He played in 10 games (eight starts) before the NBA suspension due to COVID-19.
The Hawks were also not invited to the bubble due to their 20-47 record. Dedmon finished his brief campaign in Atlanta with 8.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 0.7 APG, 1.0 SPG and 1.5 BPG in 23.3 MPG.
By the 2020 offseason, the Hawks had Capela returning from injury. They also drafted center Onyeka Okongwu with the sixth pick in the 2020 draft. The two players made Dedmon expendable and he was shipped out for Snell and Thomas.
Once the trade was consummated, instead of keeping Dedmon, the Pistons waived the center’s contract four days after the Snell deal. Still owed $14.3 million—$13.3 million for 2020-21 and $1 million guarantee for 2021-22—the Pistons used the stretch provision on Dedmon, making his salary count for $2.87 million over five seasons. Dedmon would later sign a minimum, one-year deal at midseason with the Miami Heat.
Though the move did free up some cap space to sign center Mason Plumlee and forward Jerami Grant, it was perplexing to some that Detroit would make a trade for Dedmon and waive him without getting anything in return.
Thomas was waived soon after the trade. On an expiring deal, Snell stayed with the Hawks and joined a club attempting to make the playoffs after three consecutive losing seasons. The losing did provide some benefits. The Hawks had collected numerous young players through the first round of the draft, including Trae Young, John Collins, Kevin Huerter, Deandre Hunter and Cam Reddish.
After adding veterans Danilo Gallinari, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Rajon Rondo in free agency and center Clint Capela in a trade from the prior season, the Hawks’ future was finally looking bright.
Snell began the 2020-21 season out of the rotation. After injuries to others in the rotation, he ended up seeing some playing time. The Hawks won four of their first five games, but thanks to injuries and ineffective play, they struggled. The team fell to 14-20 after 34 games when head coach Lloyd Pierce was let go. The Hawks named assistant coach Nate McMillan interim head coach.
Under McMillan, the Hawks thrived, going 27-11 and ascending to fifth in the East with a 41-31 record in the 72-game 2020-21 season. Snell excelled under McMillan. In a limited role, the wing was super efficient all season, shooting 51.5 percent from the field, 56.9 percent from the three-point line and a perfect 100 percent on 11 free-throw attempts. Snell was the first player to post a 50/50/100 season split in shooting on a minimum of 100 attempts.
Snell appeared in 47 games (23 starts) with Atlanta and compiled 5.3 PPG, 2.4 RPG and 1.3 APG in 21.1 MPG. His main highlight from the season was a game-winning three at the buzzer in a mid-March win against the Toronto Raptors.

In the postseason, the Hawks faced the New York Knicks in the opening round. Atlanta eked out a close 107-105 win in Game One. After a 101-92 Knicks win at home, the Hawks were victorious by double digits in the next three games to win the series 4-1. Snell appeared in two games during the first round, scoring three points and collecting four rebounds in 25 minutes and 19 seconds.
The Hawks advanced to the second round where they matched up with the first seed Philadelphia 76ers. The series opener saw Atlanta steal homecourt with a 128-124 win. Philadelphia took the next two games by 16 points apiece to take a 2-1 series win.
The Hawks survived in Game Four to even the series with a 103-100 victory. Trae Young had 39 points in Game Five to carry the Hawks to a 109-106 win. Facing elimination, the 76ers got 48 points combined from Seth Curry and Tobias Harris to win Game Six 104-99 and tie the series.
Hawks guard Kevin Huerter had 27 points in the final game to help the Hawks take the series and advance to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2015. Snell was scoreless in five Semifinals appearances. He played a total of 29 minutes and two seconds during Atlanta’s second round win.
Facing the Milwaukee Bucks in the Conference Finals, Young went 48 points and 11 assists to carry the Hawks to a 116-113 win. The Bucks won the next two games by double digits to take a 2-1 series lead. In Game Three, Young went out with a bone bruise in his right foot after stepping on the foot of a referee.
Atlanta held strong without Young, winning the fourth game at home by 22 points. Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo went out for the rest of the series with a hyperextended left knee.
Even without their star, Milwaukee won Games Five and Six by double digits to take the series 4-2 despite Young returning for the series finale. Snell appeared in two games and scored two points in 11 minutes and 23 seconds during the Conference Finals.
Snell could never consistently crack the deep Hawks rotation that had Bogdan Bogdanovic, Kevin Huerter, Deandre Hunter, Cam Reddish and Solomon Hill ahead of him.
In the 2021 offseason, Snell signed a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal with the Portland Trailblazers in free agency worth about $2.389 million.
Detroit Pistons general manager Troy Weaver on stretching Dedmon and Zhaire Smith (via the Detroit Free Press):
“It was part of the deal. We wanted to get these players and construct this team a certain way. Stretching the dead money is just part of it, but it won’t inhibit us in any way from moving forward with our plan.”

“Let the record show, I know there was a lot about us collecting a lot of centers. Absolutely. I love bigs. People always say they want the opposite — guards want to be bigs, bigs want to be guards. I love big guys. I believe that’s the way we win, by controlling the backboards. It’s held true. I’ve never seen a team win a championship without controlling the backboard. I welcome all the center jokes, because I do love centers.”

《2017-18 Review》底特律活塞──完全沒有退路的旅程準備

1.球季簡述
2017-18賽季，對於活塞隊球迷來說，絕對是個令人失望的賽季，球隊的戰績、球迷的心情，都跟著一同大起大落，彷彿在坐雲霄飛車。
才剛開季，預計的先發大前鋒Jon Leuer就不幸因傷賽季報銷，但Drummond十足的進步，讓活塞從開季到接近一半球季的時間，都穩定在東區領先群中，甚至一度坐上東區龍頭位置，當時算是跌破眾人眼鏡的優異表現。
而在12月一波客場連續征戰與連敗，有把戰績拉回離五成靠近一點，而在12月底Reggie Jackson腳踝的傷勢爆發，以及1月底的另一波8連敗之後，Stan Van Gundy終於決定要幹大事並保住烏紗帽，選擇梭哈主力前鋒Tobias Harris、後場大鎖Avery Bradley、巨人Marjanovic和首輪選秀權，向快艇盤來飛天遁地的Blake Griffin，和Drummond組成新雙塔，算是在相當無預警的情況下在聯盟投下一顆震撼彈。
Griffin的到來，為活塞注入了新能量，一度拉出了5連勝的小高潮，沒想到沒有持續太久，活塞又繼續陷入連敗的泥沼之中，跟季初強力的贏球氣勢簡直判若兩隊。最終只能走前幾季的老劇本，最後以季後賽邊緣的位置無緣季後賽，且因為太晚才掉下來的戰績也無緣坦，更可怕的是，選秀籤就這樣送給了快艇，結束了一個曾經充滿希望，卻又在最後虎頭蛇尾、重蹈覆轍的2017-18球季。
2.本季亮點
在這三溫暖的球季，最大的亮點當然就是Andre Drummond破繭而出的進步表現，雖然單打技巧仍然不見起色，但本季開始擔任高位策應的角色，讓他在進攻參與的表現不再限於擋拆與補籃，場均3次助攻可在全聯盟的中鋒排名第5。另外防守也有不錯的改善，場均16籃板再次奪回聯盟籃板王，62次雙十僅次於火箭Capela，還有全聯盟中鋒最多的1.4次抄截，防守效率、防守勝利貢獻值都是聯盟前段班。
而當然，最重要的是他的罰球命中率，從連續3年不到4成，在2017-18球季直接進步到突破6成，讓對手想用駭客將Drummond弄下場的機率越來越低，第4節關鍵時刻Drummond也能持續待在場上奮戰。
另外兩個值得注意的亮點，我想選Reggie Bullock和Luke Kennard。Reggie Bullock這���他在活塞的第3個球季，前2個球季大部分都在冷板凳度過，到了這季一度因為側翼人手短缺，他才上來遞補沒想到有了奇效。Bullock本季有著全聯盟第2的44.5%高三分球命中率，場均穩定進2顆三分球，也有生涯首度場均突破雙位數的11.3分，防守方面則中規中矩，相當有拚勁，重要的是他這兩季的年薪都才500萬，可謂CP值爆表。
而Luke Kennard是我相當喜愛的新人，球商很高，總能判斷當下最好的處理球選擇，要投、要傳、要切的選擇都很棒。有著白人射手的普遍體能硬傷，在後場防守方面較為吃力，但也有著41.5%的不錯三分球命中率，且算是少數能贏得Stan Van Gundy信任與上場時間的新人。下季傳出教練團有意讓他分擔控球後衛的角色，盡量避免過多他和Reggie Jackson搭檔時，那精美的後場防守，而成功與否是可以觀察的地方。

3.本季缺失
上季的底特律活塞，以一支聯盟第19盟成績坐收的球隊來說，活塞的各項攻守統計數據也是相當平庸，大概都是在聯盟中段偏後一點點的成績，要說有什麼特別的，就是活塞是一隻穩定性相當不足的球隊，這也造成了球季後段的崩盤。這一季的活塞，有能力打贏騎士、賽爾提克、勇士、火箭等一級強隊，卻也輸給了老鷹、灰熊、小牛、魔術(2敗)等坦隊，球隊狀況的上下限之寬讓人訝異。
隊中唯一一個得分破20的是Blake Griffin的21.6分，事實上來到活塞後Griffin的得分也是22.6分下降到19.8分，而在他之前的球隊得分王是Tobias Harris在活塞的18.1分，接下來的得分排名，就來到Drummond的15分、Reggie Jackson的14.6分，Bullock的11.3分和Ish Smith的10.9分有到達兩位數。這顯得活塞隊沒有足夠的穩定得分點，別忘了這些球員中，Drummond是沒有外線能力，以二波籃板和擋拆機會進攻為主的球員，Reggie Jackson在傷後切入速度就回不來了，且本季也是只打了45場，另外Bullock是純粹的等球射手，前兩季只分別投進28和35顆三分的Ish更是幾乎沒有三分威脅性。這會讓比分拉鋸的時刻或是比賽末段，對手能更好的去針對活塞得分主力，且缺少除了Reggie或Griffin這樣能獨當一面突破的球員，也常常讓得分陷入乾旱而無法突破僵局。
另外Reggie Jackson在2016-17球季初動過的膝蓋手術之後，雖然這兩季看起來只是數據稍微下滑，但有看比賽的球迷都知道，Reggie Jackson的得分能力已經回不去了，但他的打法卻完全沒有改變，可能也改變不了。尤其是遇到比賽後段，越容易因為自己打掉的企圖心，導致失誤收場或許多不合理的出手選擇。但活塞目前不可能讓他打到2號或替補，他有足夠的得分能力，就要有更高的球商才能帶領活塞更進一步。
當然，這兩季缺賽63場的Reggie Jackson，還需要更健康的膝蓋和腳踝。而除了Reggie Jackson，本來該先發出賽的大前鋒Jon Leuer，只打了8場就報銷到球季結束，本季僅Ish Smith全勤出賽的活塞，在運動防護員Arnie Kander回來後，希望能調整好球員的身體狀況。
4.選秀狀況
活塞在Blake Griffin的交易中，把選秀權交易給了快艇，而快艇最終在這12順位的選秀權中選了Miles Bridges並交易到黃蜂隊。但之後還是有和七六人交易來38順位的選秀權，選了來自Khyri Thomas，並用自己的42順位選了來自Miami大學的Bruce Brown。
兩位球員都一度有首輪末段的行情，但也都因為上限不夠高和Bruce Brown自己的傷勢，都掉到了第二輪，但從夏季聯盟看到，兩人都有不錯的防守能力和拚勁，Khyri Thomas還有放外線冷箭的能力，未���看有沒有機會拚上開季名單。

5. Q&A時間
Q：Dwane Casey能帶給活塞什麼樣的改變？
Dwane Casey是活塞在有限的暑假，所做出的最大改變，他在戰術與調度方面都與Stan Van Gundy截然不同。大范習慣以禁區球員為核心打造球隊與戰術，內線主要長人的會有不少持球比例和擋拆後的接球配合，並相當愛好機動性強、有外線能力的前鋒去做搭配，如過去的Marcus Morris、Tobias Harris、Jon Leuer等人。
而Dwane Casey則是習慣從後場去發動攻勢，不論是利用長人或側翼掩護，或是本身的突破能力去製造進攻機會，甚至做到分球，如過過去幾年的暴龍雙衛DeRozan+Lowry。而至於他能不能用好Griffin+Drummond這兩位都有高位策應的中前鋒做戰術，則是值得觀察的地方。
另外，Dwane Casey的調度算是大膽，很敢用新人，從過去暴龍練出的Siakam、Poeltl、Delon Wright、Norman Powell、VanVleet等人的最強板凳就能窺知一二。而活塞的大范則是調度相對保守許多，這對Stanley Johnson、Luke Kennard，甚至被冰到相當迷惘的Henry Ellenson來說是相當好的機會表現。
Q：活塞未來幾年薪資卡死的困境？
Griffin+Drummond+Reggie仍然把球隊薪資卡得相當緊，三人加起來下一季是接近7500萬，下下季更是高達8000萬，但別說戰績，連穩定的上場時間都不見得能成正比。除此之外的球員幾乎不太可能動到，Jon Leuer可以觀察他去年休了一整季後的復原狀況，Langston Galloway領著偏高的薪水，但2年1400萬並非無法清掉的資產，而唯一剩下一年約的Ish Smith其實以第二陣容來說有著不錯的CP值。
目前球隊的高級顧問Ed Stefanski，就是接手大范總管時期留下的爛攤子，而今年夏天以底薪，找到還算不錯的兩名老經驗球員Jose Calderon+Zaza Pachulia，做支柱也能吃到一點上場時間，也補進了年輕有潛力的但大傷過後的Glenn Robinson III來賭一把。在目前溢價約滿載的活塞陣容裡，祈禱Casey帶來的新氣象能讓大家發揮最大潛力，可能比起討論交易或選秀更來得實際不少。
Q：是否有重返季後賽的可能？
在沒有意願，也沒有辦法重建的情況下，東區老九的活塞當然是選擇放手一搏，而原來2017-18球季的東區前八名中，值得注意的就是”哪些隊伍可能空出一個位置”，而在我眼中，可以觀察的主要是騎士、熱火和公鹿。
騎士在經歷了Lebron離開，戰力100%會有所下滑，至於下滑的程度，可能要看簽了新約的Love能否扛起球隊，還有Lue能否跟當年的Spoelstra一樣，在Lebron離開後能真正證明自己的帶隊實力。熱火的選秀和暑假補強比起活塞更加有限，還在煩惱是否解決Whiteside的合約問題。公鹿雖然有Antetokumpo外掛般的存在而普遍被大家看好，但其他人除了Middleton以外的發揮依然有限，有大Lopez到來但也失去了Jabari Parker跟字母哥的搭配。
整體而言，活塞上季Reggie Jackson跟Blake Griffin因為傷痛交錯發生，並沒有太多的時間好好磨合到，雖然打法看似頗衝突，但若能找到適合的配合方法，搭配其餘側翼和板凳健康的陣容，活塞實在沒有理由進不了季後賽，甚至還有更往前拚的本錢。
總結：
一個開高走低的球季，一個震驚聯盟的大交易，一次次失望的結果，是本季活塞的寫照。有限的薪資空間，後段的選秀權，幾乎原班主力輪替陣容，是經過暑假後所能做的極限操作了。剩下的，只能期待新教練Dwane Casey能否變出新把戲，發揮他年度最佳教練的價值，以及球員們積極訓練，並健康備戰下一個球季。
