When term three of the 2022-2023 school year kicks off in April, it will be mandatory for all beverages sold in schools to be unsweetened with absolutely no sugar or artificial sweeteners added, Minister of Education Kay McConney has announced. This stipulation is among several included in the Barbados School Nutrition Policy launched at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute (SJPI) on Wednesday. The education minister said the policy also clearly outlines that healthy dishes must be served on Tuesday and Thursday, while vegetables must be served with all meals. “Healthy snacks as recommended by the National Nutrition Centre and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB) will be sold on campus. A list of healthy snacks compiled by the HSFB will be issued to principals, canteen concessionaires, vendors and persons who operate tuck shops at schools. “Water Wednesday will continue with two other days in the week. Fruit Fridays will continue with two other days in the week. Students will be allowed to drink water throughout the day, during class time. Primary school personnel and clubs at secondary schools must sell healthier options to raise funds,” McConney said. The minister added that parents will be invited to meetings to encourage them to support the changes, while canteen operators are encouraged to attend workshops sensitising them about how to contribute to a healthy school environment. She said teachers will also be encouraged to integrate the teaching of healthy lifestyles into other subjects and there will be a focus on healthy eating and fitness in Health and Family Life Education. Additionally, a Heart and Stroke Foundation Monitoring App, once approved, will be used by authorised persons, Minister McConney advised. She further outlined that HYPE days (Healthy Youth through Physical Education) will be executed in all nurseries, special needs, primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, with students and staff participating in a variety of activities which promote healthy lifestyles. President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Dr Ronnie Yearwood has described the recent Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Mia Mottley as “a swapping of incompetent ministers”. He said what was especially telling was that Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney remained unscathed despite numerous calls for her to be sacked following the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) survey fiasco. Speaking at the Barbados Labour Party’s 85th Annual Conference on Saturday, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced changes to her Cabinet, effective Wednesday. She named Senior Minister of Social Sectors and Environment Dr The Honourable Jerome Walcott as Minister of Health and Wellness to replace Ian Gooding-Edghill who will head the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport. Senator Lisa Cummins, who is the current Minister of Tourism, was named Minister of Energy and Business Development with responsibility for International Business and Trade, replacing Senior Minister Kerrie Symmonds who will be the new Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Additionally, Member of Parliament for the City of Bridgetown Corey Lane, the parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, will now serve in the Office of the Attorney General as Minister of State with responsibility for Crime Prevention. In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Yearwood said none of the ministers who were moved had performed well in their previous roles and he had little confidence they would succeed in their new positions. “Overall, I thought the reshuffle was done as a knee-jerk reaction to really what is a growing tide of dissatisfaction with the Government and the Government’s incompetence. I think at the core there is a competence issue with this Government. There is the inability to deliver even the most basic of things, so really all it was is just moving people around on the deck, but you moved one incompetent person to put another,” he contended. For the second time in just over two years Prime Minister Mia Mottley has reshuffled her Cabinet. However, embattled Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney is not among those affected. Mottley made the surprising announcement this evening while speaking at the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) 83rd Annual Conference at Queen’s Park. Before scores of supporters, Mottley revealed that she was switching the portfolios of Dr Jerome Walcott, Senior Minister Kerrie Symmonds, Senator Lisa Cummins and Ian Gooding-Edghill, effective October 26. But despite several calls for McConney to be fired over the recent Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) survey fiasco, Mottley expressed her continued confidence in McConney by allowing her to keep her job. Dr Walcott, the Senior Minister of Social Sectors and Environment has been named as Minister of Health and Wellness, taking over the portfolio formerly held by Gooding-Edghill who was named Minister of Tourism and International Transport. Former Minister of Tourism and International Transport Senator Lisa Cummins is the new Minister of Energy and Business Development with responsibilities for International Business and Trade, taking over from Symmonds who was named as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Additionally, Member of Parliament for the City of Bridgetown Corey Lane, the former parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, will now serve in the Office of the Attorney-General as Minister of State with responsibility for Crime Prevention. Back in July 2020, just over two years after assuming office, Mottley also made a sweep of changes to her Cabinet. On that occasion George Payne, Trevor Prescod and Lucille Moe were relieved of their ministerial duties. Moments before making today’s announcement, Mottley said the changes were necessary to improve the efficiency of Government. IDB School Survey, Barbados. The March did not displace Kay McConney. What took center stage was the accusations leveled against Neil Rowe. So. What’s next?
https://youtu.be/Pmho5E6Nak8
“This was sent by a protester.
Friends, we have to do something about the decision Mia made not to move Kay, as she did others.
youtube
It is with deliberate intent to dismiss and negate the school sexuality debacle. Mia cannot be allowed to dismiss a sector of this nation which has a legitimate concern for their children.
We will not be dismissed and shaken off as irritants. It also is an attempt to declassify the March today at which the people of Barbados expressed their disgust and fear at what is happening in Barbados.”

Why would anyone expect Kay McConney to resign from the post of Minister of Education? While she deserved to be suspended, there is too much politics and friendship at stake here. Miss McConney was appointed as our Consul-General at Toronto, Canada, under PM Arthur and Deputy PM Mottley. Prior to that few people ever heard of her and she probably was neither known to members of the BLP nor the Barbados Public Service. Her brief stint in that office didn’t seem to yield any known significant returns for Barbados. On demiting the CG office, McConney opted to remain in Canada. That was her right; she had no requirement to prove her commitment to Barbados. Upon becoming PM in May 2018, one of the first orders of business of the Mottley administration was to appoint Kay to the Senate and to the Cabinet. Remember there was a national embarassment when it was quickly revealed that as a Barbadian living abroad she could not serve in the Barbados Parliament. As a consequence, the PM had to do two things: have the Governor General appoint John Williams and Delisle Bradshaw (Santia’s papa) temporarily to the Senate to hold said post instead of Kay McConney and Rawdon Adams (Tom Adams’ son). Then the Constitution had to be amended to allow for Ms McConney and Mr Adams to serve in Parliament. Thereafter Delisle and John resigned and Kay and Rawdon became Senators. McConney was then installed as General Secretary of the BLP. Then John King, a committed son of the soil, was replaced by McConney in St Philip South as their MP. And we have not even yet broached the issue of the real reason why this LBGT+ agenda test has been administered to over 1,500 ten and 11-year-olds here. That is the elephant in the room which no one wants to discuss. That is when and how Barbados will become WOKE. Many are questioning whether Minister McConney has been tasked to lead this agenda for the BLP. Both Education Minister Kay McConney and Chief Education Officer Dr Ramona Archer- Bradshaw should be suspended while a public enquiry is conducted into how the controversial Computer Science test was administered in local schools. That is the view of human rights advocate Felicia Dujon, who is also imploring parents of students affected by the test to bring a class action lawsuit against the Government. Dujon, a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, has contended that even though apologies were tendered by McConney, Dr Archer-Bradshaw and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), for their mistakes which led to 733 11-year-olds being questioned about their sexuality and gender identity, there was a need for an investigation. She told Barbados TODAY it meant that both the minister and the Chief Education Officer should be “placed on leave” until those investigations were completed. “Parents should request a public enquiry into the matter because what has happened is that we are hearing different persons saying different things. They are having several press conferences with truths and half-truths and sometimes we don’t know. “Allegations are being thrown everywhere and we need a public enquiry as to what we have heard and in the interim we need the Minister of Education as well as the CEO to be placed on leave until that investigation is done,” Dujon said. She maintained that the situation was so serious that parents should join together and take legal action against Government. Dujon said the State had “overstepped its boundaries” and the only resolution was for the matter to be ventilated in the court of law. “I think that parents at this stage should seek legal counsel to ensure that their rights are upheld and also to ensure that the Government recognizes the legal and moral rights of parents.
