"Intellectually, Katharine was very much a woman of ‘the Renaissance’. It was curiously appropriate that she had been born at Alcalá de Henares, where in 1499 the most advanced university in Spain was established (La Universidad Complutense). In the years 1502–22, the university produced the celebrated ‘Polyglot Bible’, in which the Old Testament was printed in Caldean, Hebrew, Greek and Latin and the New Testament in Greek and Latin; it was one of the emblematic works of what was called ‘the New Learning’, the rediscovery of the culture and values of classical antiquity and their application to the contemporary world. Katharine knew Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, who had supervised the project – indeed, she had been born in his palace – and came in time to form friendships with some of the leading members of the great generation of humanist scholars who were transforming European letters – Antonio de Nebrija and Juan Luis Vives among the Spaniards; Thomas More and John Colet among the Englishmen. Indeed, Katharine was part of a generation in Spain which was learning to value women in quite a new way; as an expression of this, the University of Alcalá (like that of Salamanca) even appointed women to professorial chairs. Truly, the world was changing at an astonishing rate."

“In 2019, I joined a collective of women dedicated to uncovering the UK’s history of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority Women as part of the Collage Arts Heritage Lottery project. The series focuses on the story of Catalina De Cardones, Lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine of Aragon. These images play with the traditional positions of power that would’ve existed between a Queen and her Lady-in-waiting. This is not to say that Catalina is master over Katherine, more a display of Catalina’s care towards Katherine. Catalina would have cared for Katherine. She would have been her interpreter, helped her in a foreign land far from home; away from everything the two would have known.”

‘It's not every day that new Tudor artifacts are discovered. Earlier this morning, researchers at the British Museum announced the discovery of a heart-shaped gold pendant, attached to a gold chain, dated to around 1521. Perhaps the most significant part of this discovery is the interwoven 'H' and 'K' initials, confidently linking this find back to Henry VIII and his first wife, Katherine of Aragon. It is possible that this pendant was part of the Tudor court's famed pageantry. It may have been presented to Queen Katherine by Henry himself at a jousting tourney at Westminster, intended to celebrate the birth of their son, Prince Henry, Duke of Cornwall. However, that would place the pendant's origins to January of 1511 at the latest. At the tournament, King Henry proudly wore symbols of the heart, Katherine's initials, and Katherine's emblem – a pomegranate – woven throughout his clothes and resplendent caparisons. He spared no expense for the celebrations, although sadly, his son Henry, would breathe his last less than a month later. Little of the object's provenance has been revealed. It was discovered by a metal detectorist in a field in the Midlands, who 'shrieked like a school girl' upon unearthing the pendant. Hopefully in the coming months, more information about this enigmatic object will be released.’

Day 6 : Favourite Portrayal(s) of the Tudor Family Member(s)

This heart-shaped pendant associated with Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon was discovered by a metal-detectorist in Warwickshire and now is being unveiled to the public by the British Museum:

“The gold, heart-shaped pendant is attached to a 75-link gold chain via an enamelled ‘hand’.

The front of the pendant is decorated with a red and white Tudor rose motif entwined with a pomegranate bush, the symbols of Henry and Katherine. These stem from the same branch, which at its base has a tail, and sits above the inscription + TOVS + IORS - a pun on the French for ‘always’.  

The back shows the letters H and K - for Henry and Katherine - in Lombardic script, linked by ribbon, again with the legend + TOVS + IORS.

Analysis dates the pendant as early 16th century, from 1509 – 1533 AD with a most likely date of around 1521.

It appears that the pendant was produced rapidly; it may have been used as a prize or worn by people participating in an event. The design of the pendant is like that used on horse bards at a joust in Greenwich in 1521.

It is being showcased by the British Museum to highlight the launch of two annual reports – the Treasure Annual Report for 2020 and the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) Annual Report for 2021.”
