Man, poor Dr. Chakwas. What did this woman do to get all the deadly experimental technology shoved directly into the room next to the medbay with only one puny door standing in the way?
First of all, she's got the AI core in there, which considering the galaxy seems to be under constant threat of imminent techology based destruction from one group or another, has got to be a little anxiety inducing.
Then they find some mysterious talking Geth who may or may not want to kill them all, and the crew is like, where do we stash this dude? How about right next to the medical center?
Then they recover the body of "Dr. Coré," who just nearly murdered multiple crew members of the Normandy, and they're like, "Yup, let's dump this in here completely unsupervised. That's fine." And then EDI gets involved and a fire breaks out in there and Dr. Chakwas has really gotta be like, "For fucks sake, now what?"
Like, couldn't they have found some storage space for any of this that was next door to someone with more immediate defensive capabilities, like, I don't know, the genetically perfect Krogan, the merc slaughtering vigilante, the multiple extremely powerful biotics, or even, dare I say it, the Quarian tech expert? (Though to be fair, Tali probably would have destroyed most of these if left unattended with them.)
Hell, I'm surprised they didn't shove Javik in there, too. He may not be deadly tech, but at this point you might as well just stick the only known survivor and avatar of vengeance of an ancient race in there. Dr. Chakwas is used to potential death loitering on the other side of one unlocked door.

Replaying Mass Effect 1's intro because I'm doing a technical analysis of how the original Jenkins/Chakwas dialogue is constructed for an example in a Branching Dialogue class, and damn Bioware is *so* efficient during this introduction, it's quite remarkable.
Not only does it introduce two whole NPCs, the immediate intrigue and offer up information about the world and dynamics of power within this world (okay it does veer towards "as you know, [stuff everybody knows about]" territory, but given the density of that world and the fact that it's optional information the player has to voluntarily seek, I think it's as fine as they could get away with honestly), but it introduces Shepard as a player-character and a concept pretty wonderfully too. It's a great tutorial for how the conversation system works, what is Renegade and Paragon behavior and how NPCs will react to that, how choices will be recorded and reacted to (aka: Jenkins reacting to your background, AND you're given a chance to personalize your Shepard's reaction to the public perception of your life events), and on top of that, your role as a commander.
I know Jenkins is a joke character, but he does a very efficient job as a tutorial for the way NPCs will look up to you, how you might influence them, and how you are responsible for them --foreshadowing more complicated moments later down the line with Wrex, Ash, Kaidan and even Garrus for example.
This dialogue takes between 1'30 to 4' tops if you explore every option, and it demands the player to engage actively with the system almost the entire time. The efficiency on display is seriously impressive. It's deceivingly simple-looking too, while actually hiding a non-negligeable number of little checks under the hood for what appears to be very straightforward conversation.
Anyway. Some long overdue Mass Effect Appreciation moment! The writers/system designers sure knew what they were doing here.

Mezzo - 04 - Peace in the Riot
Pairing: mshenko | Rating: M Tags: Canon-typical violence, trauma, dealing with your problems poorly, body autonomy struggles   Summary: The twists and turns of ME2, through the eyes of everyone but Commander Shepard. Chapter Summary: Shepard’s not dead and it’s everyone’s problem.    Thank you to @sinvraal for betaing!
Chapter 4: Peace in the Riot | Read on Ao3
30 October 2185, Omega Nebula, Sahrabarik System – Omega Approach, Normandy SR-2
Synthetic skin fibers. Skeletal-reinforcing bone weave. Muscle-perforating microfibers. Biomeimetic eyes with nanowire retinas. Biosynthetically fused spinal cord. The more Karin Chakwas learns about Shepard’s reconstruction, the more miraculous – and overwhelming – it becomes.
How did they do this?
Perhaps what distresses her most is the depth of repairs that had to be made. Lumbar burst fractures. Exposure to hard vacuum. Clinical brain death due to asphyxiation.
Shepard’s death hadn’t been slow, but it certainly had not been quick.
Knowing that his death had been all but certain the moment Moreau’s escape pod closed without him – that Alenko’s dedicated but fruitless search had indeed been in vain – somehow is not a comfort. Not when the Lazarus data makes it hard to deny the likelihood that he had lived long enough to know what his fate would be.
But the intel had been true. Cerberus had reneged his death.
She could study the Lazarus records alone for years. It will be studied for years, if she can get a copy of it into the right hands. But research is not why she’s here.
She thumbs through the drug pack stores with a furrowed brow. “EDI, who do I speak to about requisitions?”
“What is it you need, Doctor?”
A uniform without a Cerberus logo, for starters, and a manual on caring for a patient who’s come back from the dead.
“More glucagon drug packs and electrolyte tablets. This is hardly enough for one biotic, much less three.”
“I will see to it crewman Hawthorne is made aware.”
“Thank you. That’s most kind.”
“Is there anything else you require?”
“I’ll let you know.”
The fact that serving on a ship integrated with an AI is so far down the list of her troubles it doesn’t bear worrying about should bother her more than it does. But she does indeed have far more pressing concerns, chief among them, the person walking into her medbay.
“Commander,” she says warmly when the doors swish open and Shepard enters. “You came.”
He nods at her and takes a seat on one of the biobeds, trepidation on his face. “I said I would. And…I had some questions.”
The scarring on his face is the most visible sign of his resurrection. Looking beyond the fissures that glow a pale red, he is exactly as she remembers, with no trace of the two years she’s lived in the meantime. He isn’t the only one with questions. Some of hers she may never get the answer to.
“Ask away.”
Sam Shepard has always had the mind of a surgeon, knowing exactly where and when to cut to get what he wants, so she prepares herself for a question, or a barrage of questions, that puts her to the test. But instead of ask her anything he sits in silence, expression empty, curl in his back. The outline of one of the spinal clamps shows through his shirt.
She hands him a cotton swab to use on the inside of his cheek. Dutifully, he gives it back when he’s done, surely recognizing the reason behind it. There is belief in what she is seeing, and there is supporting it with irrefutable DNA evidence.
Once she plugs the sample in to be analyzed, she picks up the medical scanner and hums an old song her mother used to sing when she was a girl. She’d always found it soothing.
When she reaches the chorus a second time, he speaks up at last, voice soft.
“What happened?”

Confession: There is no good reason we can't make sweet sweet love to Chakwas, we can fuck multiple alien races but not the GILF? Ridiculous, and frankly, I'm hurt.
