Lewis University Philip Lynch Presents “Born Yesterday”

ROMEOVILLE— “Born Yesterday” by Garson Kanin premiered on Broadway in 1946, and is a play where political satire meets romantic comedy.  While initially controversial for its scathing and unapologetic portrayal of corruption in Washington, D.C., “Born Yesterday” won over audiences with a combination of charming wit and memorable characters –in particular, the ditzy yet loveable Billie Dawn (played by Lewis theatre major Katie Horn of Sturgis, MI.)

 “Born Yesterday” is directed by Keith White, Director of Theatre from Joliet, and will be performed on November 15-17 and November 21-24.  It is recommended for patrons 16 years of age and up. Evening performances are 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinees are 2:30 p.m. In addition, there is a matinee performance at 3:30 p.m. on November 23. Ticket prices are $13 for an adult, $12 for students and seniors. Lewis students pay $3 with an ID. Group tickets are available for parties of 15 or more. Running time of the show is approximately two and half hours minutes with a fifteen minute intermission.

 Harry Brock (Jacob Rodriguez of Chicago) is an American businessman, whose greed for materialism has gone into overdrive. In order to create an international junk-dealing empire, he comes to Washington D.C. to obtain the assistance of Senator Norval Hedges (Austin Jones of Steger), in gaining access to a multitude of WWII wreckage. He will go about this through the efforts of his lawyer, Ed Devery, (Bradford Bingham of Chicago), who has laid the groundwork by finding the senator and softening him up with a hefty monetary incentive.

 Harry brings his girlfriend and business partner (on paper), Billie Dawn, with him to Washington D.C. It soon becomes extremely apparent that Billie’s rough-around-the-edge nature could use a bit of softening. Since capable and literate journalist, Paul Verrall, (Andy Wainscott of Mokena) is determined to watch Harry’s every move, Brock propositions Verrall to educate Billie, hoping to distract him enough to carry out his plan without outside interference. Billie is suspicious, but finds Verrall so accommodating, that she agrees to cooperate under his tutelage, only to discover that knowledge is power.  This 1940s screwball comedy shows that truth and justice can win the day.  

 Other members of the cast include: Brianna Knutsen of Plainfield, Haley Marchewka of Rockford, Noah Marvo of Shorewood, Michael Palermo of Westchester, Eric Redmon of Yorkville, and Alex Schedel of Bolingbrook.

 Associate theatre professor and designer, Andrew Nelsen of Joliet provides the scenic design of a sitting room in suite 67D in the finest hotel in Washington, D.C. Colorfully and lavishly decorated, it is “a masterpiece of offensive good taste.” Resident costumer Celeste Mackey of Crest Hill, is providing her talents with 1940s wardrobe and hairstyles. Working behind the scenes are Estefania Flores of Tinley Park (stage manager), Katie Szymkiewicz of Chicago (assistant stage manager), Julia Egizio of Plainfield (lighting design), Natalia Bednarczyk of Burbank (properties manager), John Kladis of Palos Hills (light board operator), Jason Lavigne of Naperville (sound board operator), and Dave Pomatto of Naperville (assistant technical director).
