PLEASE HELP EMILY
1916
Tumblr media
Please Help Emily is a three-act comedy by H.M. Harwood. The original American production was produced by Charles Frohman Inc. and starred Ann Murdock in her penultimate Broadway appearance.
The title refers to Emily Delmar. To avoid explaining why she stayed out all night at a club with a chance acquaintance, she conjures up a sick aunt and makes a trip to see her in the company of a man just engaged to her cousin. The trip was a pleasant one for Emily, but the breach of conventions involved her friends in a host of complications: her cousin compromised, her travelling companion jailed, and her guardian shocked. Everything turns out alright in the end and Emily marries the proper man after all.

On New Year’s Day 1916, newspapers in the US and UK reported that Charles Hawtrey, a popular English actor / manager, would be part of the cast in the London Production. Co-starring Gladys Cooper, it opened at the Playhouse in Charing Cross on January 27, 1916.
In April 1916, Selwyn & Co. acquired the North American rights to the play. Early reports were that Hawtrey and Cooper would reprise their roles. By June it became clear that the London production was not going to close soon, so an all-new cast would be assembled for Broadway. Ann Murdock was mentioned for the role created by Gladys Cooper. The target was to open at the Lyceum in August, becoming the first production of the new season. Although two names were above the title in the West End, in the US Murdock would claim top billing alone.

Belgian Jules Raucourt was cast when he was overheard speaking with a heavy French accent at a Manhattan eatery. He was cast on the spot as a flirty Frenchman Rene Dufour.

The play had its US premiere in Atlantic City, New Jersey at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on August 10, 1916.

The play opened on Broadway on August 14, 1916 at the Lyceum Theatre. Built in 1903, the venue still operates under the same name. Reviews were polite, if less than enthusiastic.
"’Please Help Emily’ is the sort of farce which haunts you with the suggestion that some place or other you will see it again.” ~ NEW YORK TRIBUNE
Tumblr media
“It Is a very simple little play. The only word that will absolutely suit It is ‘innocuous.’” ~ BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE
Tumblr media
The play closed after 40 performances.
Tumblr media
The play decamped to the Windy City with most of the original company. Coincidentally, at the same time, the English production was also touring.

By the middle of October, The Chicago Tribune printed this clever obituary for Emily. But that wasn’t the last of Emily...

A silent film version of Please Help Emily also starred Ann Murdock. Joining her from the stage production were John Harwood and Charles Racourt. It was filmed in Queens, New York. The film is now considered lost.

It opened in Atlantic City on the Boardwalk at the Bijou Theatre on November 22, 1917.
