Joan Laporta returns to the presidency of FC Barcelona
Joan Laporta returns to the presidency of FC Barcelona: The former president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, will once again preside over the Barça club after winning this Sunday in the elections to the Barça presidency.
Laporta took over the presidency of Barcelona with 54.2% of the votes, compared to 29.9% for Victor Font and 8.58% for Toni Freixa with 100% of the votes counted.
Presented as a historic election, the elections had a 50.42% turnout, one of the highest in the club, despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

Laporta will occupy the chair left by Josep Maria Bartomeu on October 27 with his resignation before facing a motion of censure for the scandal known as “Barçagate”.
Rebuild the house? Laporta’s challenges One of the priorities of the new boss is to ensure the continuity of the club’s top figure: Argentine star Lionel Messi; This is claimed by a wide margin of the fans and the thousands of partners who gave him their vote.
Likewise, he will have the mission of rebuilding a club mired in a triple sporting, economic and institutional crisis, which culminated last Monday with the arrest for a few hours of Bartomeu.
Crises are not strange to Laporta. During the first time in charge of him, between 2003 – 2010 he took Barcelona forward and took it, together with Pep Guardiola, to the time with the most titles in its history.

In the next few days, the transfer of powers process will be completed, in which Laporta will relieve Carles Tusquets, president of the management board, as head of the Barça club.

‘Leo loves Barca’: Laporta hopeful on Messi after election win
Tumblr media
Joan Laporta was elected Barcelona president again, inheriting a football club in crisis and facing daunting problems that include a huge debt and the possible departure of star player Lionel Messi when his contract finishes at the end of the season.
Laporta became president for a second time as club members voted him in to replace Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Laporta, 58, beat Victor Font and Toni Freixa in the election on Sunday for the position he previously held between 2003 and 2010.
“Joan Laporta, new president of FC Barcelona,” said the club on its Twitter account.
Laporta earned 54 percent of the vote, followed by Font and Freixa.
“I’d like to thank all the club members who have participated in these elections, who make us more than a club, and I think they are the most important elections in the club’s history,” said Laporta in his victory speech.
“We will bring happiness back to Barcelona fans, we will overcome the difficulties. The fans will continue to be the owners of this club.”

Bartomeu stepped down in October 2020 after facing a no-confidence vote from club members, with elections called for January but postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Laporta inherits the club with gross debt of about 1.2 billion euros ($1.4bn), and ahead of Lionel Messi’s contract expiring in less than four months, meaning the captain and forward can walk away for free.
Messi, 33, voted in the election, along with teammates Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Riqui Puig, while former president Bartomeu also voted to choose his successor.
“Twenty years ago, a little boy called Leo Messi made his debut with Barca’s youth team. Seeing the best player in the world come out to vote today is a clear sign of what we keep saying. Leo loves Barca,” Laporta said.
“The best player in the world loves Barca and I hope that is a sign that he will stay at Barcelona, which is what we all want.”
‘Barcagate’
Earlier this month, Barcelona football club plunged into crisis after Bartomeu was arrested by police as part of an investigation into the “Barcagate” social media scandal, relating to a company hired to monitor the club’s online presence.
Bartomeu spent a night in jail while Catalan police investigated possible irregularities during his administration. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Laporta elected Barcelona president for second time

Joan Laporta has been elected the new president of Barcelona, returning to the post he previously held from 2003 to 2010.
Barca members voted Laporta into power on Sunday ahead of rival candidates Victor Font and Toni Freixa. The club called the election on Sunday night, with Laporta winning with 30,184 votes and Font coming in second and Freixa third with 16,679 and 4,769 votes, respectively.
– Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
Barca said 51,765 out of 109,531 eligible members had voted in the election, which was postponed from January due to coronavirus restrictions in Catalonia.
Among those to vote were first-team players Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, as well as the club’s former coach and current Spain boss Luis Enrique.
“I want to thank all the members for coming out to vote what has been the most important election in the club’s history due to [the effects of] the coronavirus pandemic, which has changed our lives,” Laporta said in a brief speech.
“I want to thank the members that have supported our campaign. This has been a celebration of democracy and of Barcelona. I also want to pay special thanks to Johan Cruyff, who’s no longer with us. I am sure he’s helped us.
“Barcelona is a huge family, and we will overcome the difficulties together. We will achieve the objectives that we have set out.”
Laporta, 58, takes over at a critical moment in the club’s history. Gross debt has risen to €1.2 billion during the coronavirus pandemic, with players forced to accept pay cuts, and star player Messi is out of contract in June and will walk away for free if new terms cannot be agreed.
Laporta said the fact that Messi voted on Sunday was “significant.”
“Today, 20 years ago, Messi made his debut for Barca’s youth teams,” he added. “To see the best player in the world, the player in the history of football, coming to vote, is a sign of what we have said throughout the campaign: that Messi loves Barca.
“The best player in the world loves Barca, and that is very significant. We’re going to encourage him to continue with the club, which is what we all want.”
Meanwhile, on the pitch, last season was Barca’s first trophy-less campaign since 2008, and it ended with an 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
However, despite last month’s 4-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie, there have been slow signs of recovery under coach Ronald Koeman.
Barca beat Sevilla last week to reach the final of the Copa del Rey, and a 16-game unbeaten run in La Liga has seen them close the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to three points after the leaders drew 1-1 with Real on Sunday. They travel to PSG for the second leg of their European tie on Wednesday.
The Catalan club have been without a president since October, when Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned from the role. Bartomeu’s six-year mandate was due to end this year, but he opted to step down early rather than face a vote of no confidence from members.
Bartomeu was one of four people connected to the club arrested last Monday for his role in the “Barcagate” social media scandal following allegations of misuse of funds and corruption. He was released on Tuesday and is awaiting a date to appear in court.
Bartomeu succeeded Sandro Rosell, who resigned in 2014 when a lawsuit alleged he had misappropriated funds in the signing of Neymar. During Bartomeu’s mandate, Barca won three league titles, four Copas del Rey and one Champions League.
Rosell had been elected in 2010, replacing Laporta, who had held the role since 2003.
In his first spell as Barca president, Laporta turned the club around, helping them win their second and third Champions Leagues — they’ve now won five in total but none since 2015 — and overseeing the appointment of Pep Guardiola as coach and the explosion of Messi as a player.
His stint in charge, when he worked closely with Johan Cruyff and alongside Manchester City duo Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain, is also remembered for the signings of Ronaldinho, Deco and Samuel Eto’o. He was the president to put UNICEF on the front of Barca’s shirts, too. He was unable to stand again in 2010, having served two mandates.
Throughout the electoral campaign, Laporta insisted that he was the best-placed of the three candidates to keep Messi at Camp Nou, and following his election win, he will be able to open talks with the forward over a new contract. Sources have told ESPN Laporta hopes to visit the players at the training ground on Monday and plans to sit down with Messi after the PSG game on Wednesday, although he hinted on Sunday he could call Messi’s dad, Jorge, before then.
Laporta has also said that Koeman has his full backing and, despite the club’s perilous financial position, his relationship with some of the game’s super-agents could help him make big signings this summer.

Polls open for presidential election at troubled Barcelona
Barcelona (AFP) – Polling opened on Sunday morning for a presidential election at crisis-hit Barcelona, where the winner will face the challenge of rebuilding the club’s finances and squad.
Voting started at 09.00 local time (0800 GMT) in an election reshaped by the coronavirus pandemic.
The three candidates are former president Joan Laporta, the favourite according to the Catalan press, Toni Freixa and Victor Font.
They are running to replace Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned in October and was briefly taken in for questioning following police raids on the club on Monday into the ‘Barcagate’ scandal which revolves around allegations that Barcelona carried out a defamation campaign against current and former players critical of club leadership.
“These are the most important elections in the history of Barca,” Laporta told the club web site after voting.
Barcelona is in crisis on and off the field.
In October, it announced losses of announced losses of 97 million euros ($114 million) for last season and debts that had more than doubled to 488 million euros. Star player Lionel Messi is out of contract in the summer. In the Champions League, Barcelona travel to Paris on Wednesday trailing Paris Saint-Germain  4-1 after a humiliating first-leg home loss. Form in La Liga has improved and on Saturday Barcelona climbed to second, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, who have two games in hand.
In previous elections, members have cast their votes in person at the club’s Nou Camp headquarters, but because of Covid-19 members have also been allowed to apply for postal votes.
The club said that of the 110,920 members, 22,811 had applied to vote remotely.
Polling stations have also been set up in Girona, Tarragona, Tortosa and Lleida in Catalonia and in Andorra but the club said that 78,987 members had indicated they would vote, as they always have, at the Camp Nou.
Even though it began to rain in Barcelona shortly after the polls opened, the club reported on their web site at 09.45 that “the large influx of members to the stadium continues.” The club posted a photo of queueing supporters wearing masks and rubbing gel on their hands.
“Members should have no doubt about coming to vote,” said  Carles Tusquets, head of the interim management committee that has run the club since Bartomeu resigned on October 27.
The polling will continue until 21.00 local time and the result is expected before midnight.

Barcelona take the field after off-field turmoil, arrests
Tumblr media
Barcelona will take the field in a crucial second-leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final just two days after former cub President Josep Maria Bartomeu was arrested in an investigation into alleged irregularities during his administration.
The match, with Barcelona trailing Sevilla 2-0, is the first to be played since Bartomeu was “provisionally released under charges of unfair administration and corruption of business” after his arrest that came during a raid on the La Liga club’s offices on Monday.
Bartomeu and ex-Director Jaume Masferrer exercised their right not to testify on Tuesday when answering charges of unfair administration and corruption of business.
Barca’s head of legal services, Roman Gomez Ponti, and former director, Jaume Masferrer, were also arrested.
The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia confirmed the case was still open.
The investigation is thought to centre around the “Barcagate” scandal, in which the Spanish giants allegedly paid social media company I3 Ventures to smear celebrated club names such as Lionel Messi, Xavi, Gerard Pique and former President Joan Laporta during Bartomeu’s leadership.
Catalan officials searched Barca’s offices in July 2020 in relation to the claims, although the club hired Price Waterhouse Coopers to investigate the matter, with the global auditing firm finding in their favour.
Barcelona to “come back stronger”
Meanwhile, former Barcelona player and manager Pep Guardiola is optimistic that “the best club in the world” will recover from off-field turmoil “in a short time” under a new president.
Guardiola believes there are better times to come for the Catalan powerhouse following Sunday’s presidential election, with Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Antoni Freixa standing for office.
“I know it’s an uncomfortable situation and hopefully it’s going to finish well,” said Guardiola.
“The only thing I’m concerned about right now is in one week we will have a new president. I want to congratulate all three for the campaign, we are in a difficult situation all around the world and in Barcelona especially, for many reasons everybody already knows.
“To have the courage to the lead the next years and I’m pretty sure hopefully as many people as possible can vote and choose the right president to lead this incredible club.
Tumblr media
Former Barca player and manager Guardiola believes there are better times ahead for the Catalan powerhouse
“For me, it’s the best club in the world for the sentimental issues and I’m pretty sure Barcelona will come back stronger in a short time,” he added.
Guardiola coached Barca to 14 titles, including two Champions Leagues, during his tenure 2008 to 2012.
