“Synopsis
In Ancient Greek Historians, eminent British scholar J. B. Bury sets out to trace the genesis and development of the historical literature of the Greeks. The work is arranged chronologically, with several chapters addressing the legend-based writing of early Greek historiography before discussing the more scientific approach to history writing taken by major figures like Herodotus, Thucydides, and Polybius. Originally developed as a series of lectures for Harvard University, the publication of Ancient Greek Historians has remained a standard in the field.”

There is such a huge gulf in sophistication between American & British academics in the first half of the 20th century and those in continental Europe in fields like political science & anthropology... This article is good but it reads like a fairy story, its so sweeping and general in a way that is very 19th century. The same is true with historians like John Bagnell Bury in the UK... This approach became more and more problematized and even in 10-15 years was no longer really possible, but its just so bizarre to imagine it being published at the same time as like, Carl Schmitt or Leo Strauss, nevermind someone as considered and credulous as Bela Belasz

Horthy Bagoson
Gábor György Természetesen nem kell osztani John Bagnell Bury neves angol történész, filológus híres tételét, amely szerint “…she (history) is herself simply a science, no less and no more”, azaz „…ő (a történelem) maga egyszerűen tudomány, nem kevesebb és nem több”, s lehet az empirikus történelemszemléletet kritikával illetni, de az – lássuk be – korszakos újdonság, egyúttal a munkáslevelezők…

AuthorHay, John Stuart ContributorBury, J. B. (John Bagnell), 1861-1927 TitleThe Amazing Emperor Heliogabalus LanguageEnglish CategoryText EBook-No.64433 Release DateJan 31, 2021 Copyright StatusPublic domain in the USA.
The life of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, generally known to the world as Heliogabalus, is as yet shrouded in impenetrable mystery. The picture we have of the reign is that of an imperial orgy—sacrilegious, necromantic, and obscene. The boy Emperor, who reigned from his fourteenth to his eighteenth year, is depicted amongst that crowd of tyrants who held the throne of Imperial Rome, by the help of the praetorian army, as one of the most tyrannical, certainly as the most debased.   [v]

History of Greece to the Death of Alexander the Great, Vol I | John Bagnell Bury | Antiquity | Audiobook full unabridged | English | 1/12 Content of the video and Sections beginning time (clickable) - Chapters of the audiobook: please see First comments under this video. J.B. Bury wrote his “History of Greece” before World War I, but it was such a good overview of classical Greek history that the third edition was still being used as a college textbook in the late 1960′s. In the newer editions, a co-author rewrote the material dealing with the early centuries where there have been new archeological developments, but the later chapters and Bury’s framework were retained essentially unchanged. Bury writes in a lucid, easily understood style that entertains as it educates. The book covers artistic and literary development, as well as politics and war, and its field of view includes western Asia Minor, the Agean archipelago, and “Greater Greece” (Sicily and Southern Italy).
