Okay, as someone who started Derry Girls on Thursday (April 25) and proceeded to watch all but the last episode by Friday night (April 26), I don't know much of what the fandom has said.
But, since the show is told in Erin's perspective, doesn't it start to make a lot of sense why James is seen in a fond manner throughout the show? Obviously they didn't always treat him that way, but when him and Erin are alone, she is obviously very fond of him and I dunno...
I think it's something interesting to analyze.
Then again, I do know nothing.

god. it’s just. it’s dreams by the cranberries. it’s the montage of them all voting yes. it’s orla’s little smiley face in the box. it’s the live footage of the troubles. it’s erin’s speech. it’s the way that the last shot is of grandpa joe and anna jumping together out of the voting hall. it’s the sheer symbolism of youth and age being joyful and hopeful together. god.
