yeah actually! Remember how I was telling you about the new southern resident j60 and how scientists aren’t exactly sure who his mom is? Well, the plot thickens.

So J60 was seen for the first time with J40 Suttles, who is an adult female who is overdue for a first calf, so it makes sense for it to be hers, right? Well after that, J60 kept being seen with a different female, J16 Slick, with Suttles nowhere in sight.

Slick was first sighted as a calf in 1972, so she is 50+ years old. Orcas are actually one of the few animals to undergo menopause (alongside humans and a few other species of whales. No other primates!! just us and the whales) and females stop reproducing in their early 40s, just like humans. So it’s almost downright impossible for J60 to be Slick’s calf. Is Slick babysitting for Suttles? Maybe, but babysitting behavior tends to happen among family members, especially when a calf is so young, and Slick and Suttles aren’t closely related.

So currently, the theory is that J60 is actually the son of one of Slick‘s daughters, either J36 Alki or J42 Echo. Alki’s had a calf before but Echo hasn’t so if it’s hers, she might need extra help.

As for what Suttles was doing with J60, we’ll never really know, but it is a known phenomenon that young female killer whales will sometimes calfnap another whale’s baby when their maternal instincts get confused, or to practice when they have their own calf. It’s even been observed happening across species (remember the crazy beef orcas and pilot whales have I’ve talked about. orcas will sometimes kidnap pilot whale calves). So that’s probably what happened here.

J36 ~ "Le vent se lève"

Je fais bien de rester attentif à la météo ces dernier temps car une nouvelle tempête arrive sur moi aujourd'hui. La région est en alerte pour vents violents, ça devrait souffler en rafales à 90km/h.

Je prends le bac dès le lever du jour et je roule à travers champ sur des chemins pendant une bonne heure avant de rejoindre la route. Je comprends vite que je n'échapperai pas au mauvais temps cette fois-ci. Dès la fin de matinée, j'essuie une première grosse averse. Pas de quoi m'abriter lorsqu'elle tombe alors je continue. Quand enfin je trouve un abris la pluie cesse... Une accalmie de courte durée pour moi comme pour les troupeaux de mouton en transhumance. Eux aussi prennent la route ce qui perturbe quelque peu le trafic.

Je rencontre enfin pour de vrai l'ennemi juré du cycliste: le vent ! Il souffle tantôt bien en face, tantôt de côté. Je ne sais pas ce qui est le pire. De face, j'ai l'impression qu'il est capable de me faire reculer si je n'y vais pas à fond et bien couché sur le vélo; de côté ses soudaines rafales fichent bien la trouille et demandent un bel effort d'équilibre.

Bref, entre belles averses et gros coups de vent, j'arrive épuisé à Cádiz. La ville est de l'autre côté d'un immense pont autoroutier et mon GPS me crois capable de le franchir. En fait il y a 2 ponts (tous 2 autoroutiers) et une 3ème autoroute à 30km de là pour accéder à Cádiz et pas vraiment d'accès piéton… Il est presque 19h, j'ai réservé mon hébergement en ville, il va bien falloir que j'y arrive. J'envisage un temps de faire du stop, espérant tomber sur une camionnette ou un pick-up qui voudrait bien me faire traverser. Toujours rien au bout de 20 minutes. Un monsieur en voiture qui me donne l'astuce. Il y a une voie de service sur le pont. Elle n'est empruntée que par certains bus et par les services d'urgence. Il faut bien faire attention avec le vent mais c'est le moyen de plus "sûr" de passer. Vu l'heure qu'il est, je prends la décision de passer. Au final c'est plus impressionnant que dangereux. Je suis sur une voie complètement détachée de l'autoroute, le vent souffle mais il y a des barrières de 3 mètres de haut bien rassurantes et je ne croise personne sur mon passage. Ça y est, il est 20h, j'arrive enfin à Cádiz au terme de ce qui aura été ma plus longue journée: 12h quasi non stop sur le vélo.

Le lendemain matin, le mauvais temps s'est calmé. Je retourne sur les lieux du délit. Je ne repasserai pas par là aujourd'hui mais ça c'est une autre histoire.

Subject: Another New Calf in J Pod!

On March 1, we welcomed the meteorological first day of spring and a new calf in J Pod!

We received word that J Pod was nearby (off Landbank, San Juan Island), and there was possibly a new addition to the Southern Resident orca family.

The Center for Whale Research's (CWR) photo-ID expert, Dave Ellifrit, found the whales near Kelp Reef and confirmed the new addition to J pod. The calf was next to J37, with J47 and J40 nearby. CWR field staff last saw J37 during Encounter #12 on February 11, 2022, and she did not have a calf at that time. We estimate this baby was born within the past few days, given its "lumpy" physical nature.

Dave captured images of J37 with her new baby traveling in a tight group with other family members. CWR designates this newborn: J59. J59's sex is unknown at this time. Its size and shape are typical of a calf in good physical condition.

J59 is the first calf born into J Pod since September 2020, when J41 gave birth to J58 (female).

The new mother, J37 (born 2001), is part of the J14 matriline and has two siblings, J40 (female, born 2004) and J45 (male, born 2009). She was a young mother, only 11 years old when she gave birth to her first calf in 2012: J49 (male).
