Informal Art in my Hometown
I have lived in a small village by the name of Brookville for the past 10 years,  a rural village between Milton and Guelph. There are limited shops and buildings in this area besides an elementary school, a convenience store, a gas station, a butcher shop and a veterinarian clinic. The population in this town is mainly made up of either families with young children or older couples who are usually retired.  In my many years living in this area, I have not been exposed to graffiti.
In a more populated town like Milton, where I went to high school, graffiti is commonplace.  I must admit that I never really noticed the significant amount of graffiti found in Milton until I was actually looking for it.  At my high school, Milton District, graffiti is found on the sidewalks, on the portables, on the soccer field posts and even on the exterior walls of the school. Students have recently been afforded the freedom to cover the interior walls of the school in art with the permission of head staff. Being surrounded in this environment for 4 years, I have never considered this form of art to be ‘graffiti’.  It gives the school character and I have always had an appreciation for it. Having created a mural for the school, one may say that I am in fact a graffiti artist!
Tumblr media
The piece of Wall Art above is found in the Outdoor Education wing in my school.
Mill Pond, in downtown Milton, is a graffiti ‘hotspot’.  I understand that the abandoned train tracks, the iron bridges and the pathways must be a very intriguing creative space for graffiti artists to paint without being caught by authorities.  I believe that these informal art installers are teenagers or young adults, either looking at graffiti as a way to rebel against the law or to express themselves by making their creations in a public area.
Below are pictures that I took of some graffiti found at Mill Pond park.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to the young teenagers and adults using graffiti as a means of creative expression, there are residents in surrounding areas using this art form to promote awareness toward issues close to their heart.  On my way to high school each morning, I often passed this ‘bicycle tree’ on 15th Side road at Trafalgar Road.
Tumblr media
Source:  https://www.theifp.ca/news-story/5373439-pedaling-against-poverty-to-raise-funds-for-impoverished-women/.  (link to article if interested).
This willow tree is a statement for "Pedalling Against Poverty”,  a charity that raises funds for impoverished women in Nicaragua and was used to promote a bicycle charity event taking place in November 2018. The resident established this fundraiser in 2003. The property that the tree is located on is on a bend in the road and people often pull over to take pictures and admire this art form. There are even people who decide to donate their old bicycles to be a part of this magnificent creation!
Our perception of what is considered ‘graffiti’ is evolving, with the younger generation encouraged to express themselves creatively.  Graffiti artists like Banksy are appreciated and glorified and with this change in perception there may be an increased use of graffiti in a range of demographics (i.e., from young to old, from rich to poor)  to market products and businesses. One could say that the graffiti artist is in all of us!

1929 Ford roadster pickup equipped with a Four-Banger has V-8 Punch
If you’ve been a reader of STREET RODDER for the past decade or so you’ve probably seen the name Jeff Eischen pop up every couple of years. He’s certainly not a “household name” like some of the star hot rod builders who have their own TV shows nor does he have the big 50-foot car hauler parked at events across the country. Jeff has taken an almost opposite approach: he keeps a low profile (that’s his personality), and he turns out some truly spectacular cars (that’s his immense talent).
STREET RODDER first found Jeff at a Goodguys event in 2005 when it gave him a Top 10 award (since rebranded as the Painless Performance Products/STREET RODDER Top 100 program) for a little track-nose roadster he brought to the show. We found him again two years later with a Garage Scene profile on a 1929 roadster pickup he was working on.
Then, from 2008-2011, his cars started being featured annually in the magazine (Feb. ’08 a 1931 Ford tub; Jun. ’09 a T roadster; Sep. ’10 a 1932 roadster pickup; Sep. ’11 a 1929 Ford coupe), with a small break before reappearing in the Aug. ’14 issue with another 1929 Ford coupe.
After the first Model A coupe debuted, hot rodder and ex-IMSA Porsche 962 racer Bruce Leven started paying attention to what Jeff was doing and soon thereafter began a relationship with Jeff where Leven would underwrite the build with the stipulation Bruce’s Garage in Washington would become the eventual resting spot for the cars. The pair do work well together, as they have similar tastes, and there is a lot of discussion and back-and-forth when the cars are going together. The two first produced a 1929 Ford roadster pickup, then the second Model A coupe Jeff built in 2014, and now the pair’s latest effort: the Gemsa/Leven Ford Special.
The moniker may be a bit misleading as Joe Gemsa, the brilliant machinist from the ’50s until his death in 1995 (and who developed single- and dual-overhead cam conversions for the Model B engine), didn’t own or work on this car, but one of his rare and wonderful cylinder head configurations is one of the car’s highlights—of which there are many.
Much of what you see on this vehicle, and nearly everything you don’t see, was scratch-built by Jeff in his home garage, located a few miles outside Columbus, Ohio. For this roadster, he started with a computer-aided chassis design, which he then fab’d out of 2×4 boxed steel. He added a crossmember and X-member from Pinkee’s, and set the suspension up out back with a one-off hairpin design that bends inboard when it gets close to the bells of the Winters’ quick-change (4.11:1).
A pair of Andre Hartford 506 friction shocks (from London, England) connect with a set of quarter-elliptic leaf springs from Posies, and a Panhard bar keeps the quickie centered. Up front, a tube axle features another set of transverse-mounted Posies quarter-elliptic springs, another pair of Hartford friction shocks, plus another Panhard bar. Magnum spindles hang off the ends of the axle where a set of faux-Buick disc brake drums (from Alan Johnson) give off a vintage appearance but with contemporary stopping power.
Steering is accomplished with a TrackMaster Products’ side steer box (available in 16:1 or 24:1 ratios) aided by a steering column, Pitman arm, and an engine-turned, three-spoke, stainless steering wheel all fab’d by Jeff. The wire road wheels from Dayton (16×4 and 16×6) certainly evoke the look found on racing cars from a century earlier, but are shod with present-day Excelsior 500 and 750 rubber.
With the chassis out of the way, attention gets turned toward the drivetrain. Being the racer that he is, Leven picks the type of motor for his projects and, though Jeff’s own history is extensive (including stints with the racing programs of IMSA, SCCA, CART Indy, as well as a team member at the endurance races at Sebring and Daytona) and his penchant for using really unique engines in his rides (such as a Miller-equipped Model B banger), getting the motor working in this car required some outside help.
The 210-inch four-cylinder is from 1923 and was built and tuned by Dan Brewer at Shaver Specialties Racing Engines in Torrance, California. As the name implies, Shavers does build racing engines, both in crate form for any use as well as ones used (and abused) in off-road, circle track, and roundy-round tracks across the country, and they’ve been doing so for nearly four decades.
Internally, counterweights were added to the crank, and the assembly was built using Carrillo rods and JE pistons (0.060 over). The dual-overhead Gemsa camshaft configuration is pretty rare, and the head (set up with a 9:1 compression ratio) is fed by a pair of S&S Super G Shorty sidedraft carbs. Originally designed for the 1980-1990 Harley V-Twins and Sportster motorcycles, Jeff adapted the carbs by fab’ing his own log-type intake manifold.
Located throughout the engine compartment you’ll notice small (about the size of a stick of gum) sticker strips made by Thermax attached to temperature-critical parts (such as the radiator, intake manifold, or backside of the electric water pump) that gives the driver instant pinpoint analysis of the drivetrain’s operating temps.
Externally you’ll find a Meziere electric water pump, a Derale Performance fan for the Walker radiator, an ignition system that utilizes a Vertex ignition and solid cotton-wrapped wires, and an Eischen-designed and built exhaust system that starts with 2-inch stainless steel headers that work back down the passenger side of the roadster into 3-inch stainless tubing outfitted with a Stainless Works muffler insert. The ultraclean and tidy engine mounts to a 1939 Ford box (with a truck tailshaft), outfitted with a Ford tractor clutch, an aluminum flywheel, all operated by a Pinkee’s pedal assembly, modified by Jeff. Both the 12-gallon gas tank (made by Jeff) and the driveshaft (from Coleman Machine) are aluminum.
Like the engine, the design of the car featured input from several sources, including Brookville Roadsters (supplied the steel 1929 Ford roadster pickup body), Moal Coachbuilders (the bulbous track nose and its grille), and more of Jeff’s handiwork (such as the four-piece hood that features stainless steel mesh grilles in each of the pieces). And much of what attaches one item to another on this ride is secured with stainless steel safety wire.
Once Jeff was satisfied with the fit of all the body parts, everything was sent to Petar Brown of Brown Restorations, who has painted the last few cars for Jeff (though normally they’re black). This time British Racing Green was the preferred color, and Brown used PPG products to get the job done.
The headlights, which might be easily confused with a modern-day, flat-face, off-road type lens, are actually Ryan-Lite lamps, which were used on high-end cars back in the ’20s (think Stutz or Lincoln phaetons). The 3-in-1 stop/taillight, mounted above the exposed gas tank, is your average 1916 Cadillac unit.
Mike Barr, from Metal Brite in Dayton, Ohio, was responsible for the car’s nickel plating, which includes the subtle roll bar (bent by Tubular Technologies in Hilliard, Ohio) just barely poking up from behind the cockpit. Jeff also fab’d the windshield frame, which follows the top edge of the cowl and flows into integral posts, with tabs every 9 inches or so to help secure the Plexiglas windshield as well as the side glass at the door tops.
Inside the cockpit Jeff opted for a Brookville 1932 Ford roadster dash, which he finished in crinkle black paint before adding a pair of Classic Instruments gauges in a panel Jeff made. To their right another panel holds twin Meylan stopwatches—typically used by the navigator in a timed road course. Jeff tapped Robert McCarter, whom he’d used on previous builds, to complete the simple-looking interior. McCarter used square-weave carpet, complemented by custom speedster-type bucket seats covered in brown leather—the same material used to line the cockpit and doors.
Once the car was finished, it debuted at the 2017 Grand National Roadster Show in Southern California. It was perhaps unfortunate where it was placed—in the shadow of the other car Bruce Leven had entered: a spectacular 1951 Ford Gran Turismo with a stunning road racing chassis. Most folks didn’t get a chance to study the incredible work that went into the little roadster but, if they had, they’d have come away with a new appreciation for how hard it must be to make something so simple look so damn good!

24th Amelia Island Concours & A POSIES Retrospective
Most cars and coffee events across the country (where car enthusiasts of all types gather at some local donut shop parking lot early on a Saturday morning) can easily draw hundreds of vehicles while their owners ogle each other’s rides.
But what if the you wanted to step it up a few levels and have the best of every type of car in one place from across the automotive spectrum—from record-setting NHRA dragsters to LeMans racers, from the lowly Volkswagen to the high and mighty Bugattis and Delahayes, from all sorts of rare Porsches, Ferraris, Mercedes, as well as many different years of American cars that span the wood-spoke era to chrome-heavy ’50s behemoths?
Then you toss in a dream facility, not some corner asphalt parking lot covered in oil stains, but rather the long and carefully manicured fairways of an upscale golf course adjacent to one of the most highly regarded beachfront hotels in the world: The Ritz Carlton. And, for good measure, make this stunning weekend a charitable event. Where could this kind of perfect automotive weekend ever happen? Why in Florida at the 24th annual Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance, of course!
When folks think “concours” they usually have a vision of snobby rich folks in their pressed pants sipping champagne, but the Amelia event isn’t like that. It’s much more down to earth than some of the world’s other d ‘elegance shows but, make no mistake, the cars attending this stellar event are some of the finest (and, be default, the most expensive) in the world.
Nearby several national auction houses concurrently conduct their business, offering truly amazing cars; with some bidding reaching several million dollars apiece. But this event also features more common (or at least better known) manufacturers and, surprisingly, we found many hot rodders sprinkled into the mix.
Well known historic hot rod collector Bruce Meyer had a vehicle in the show, and former Big 3 execs (and longtime hot rodders) Wayne Cherry and Tom Gale were on hand to judge some of the car classes, a job rodding enthusiast, writer, and historian Ken Gross was also on hand for.
Second generation builders Rod Emory (grandson of Valley Custom founder Neal Emory) and Rob Ida (who perfected his trade while working alongside his dad, Bob, at Ida Automotive) were both on hand with their latest work: an Outlaw Porsche 356 for rocker John Oates and a restored ’48 Tucker, respectively. Historic drag cars (Altereds, dragsters, and Funny Cars) as well as road race vehicles were displayed, and we also ran into Larry Griffey (a recent Pirelli Great 8 winner at the Detroit Autorama) who had two restored vehicles on the field.
The event actually covers two days, with the first starting early with an informal cars and coffee type of gathering where 400 or so auto enthusiasts roll in single file by themselves or with their club or friends, then park on the fairways and hob-nob with each other. A contingent of Dodge Vipers drove in, as did a Morgan club and a group of Mustang owners. Model T speedsters were present and, on the other end of the spectrum, a street-driven 917 Porsche motored onto the lawn (Hey! It had license plates, so it was street legal, right?).
On Sunday the field was open for the concours cars to drive in, and all the rare and beautiful cars took their spots for judging. In front of the Porsche booth was a row of 11 962 Porsche race cars. Vintage American race cars (including Corvettes, Cheetahs, Cobras, and Kurtis Kraft) co-mingled with their European counterparts (Peugeot, Stanguellini, OSCA, and Maserati) covering the 10th and 18th fairways of the Amelia Island Golf Club course and, if you appreciate fine automotive design, you had a hard time knowing which way to look next.
The display of dragsters (including Don Gartlits’ Wynnscharger, Tony Nancy’s Sizzler, and the rainbow-colored Dunn & Reath rail) along with a pair of Funny Cars and a pair of Altereds (including Rat Trap and the Bradford Topolino) treated the crowd to an old-fashioned cacklefest on Sunday afternoon; something we bet  many concours attendees had never seen (or definitely heard!) before.
Recently the Amelia Island Concours d ‘Elegance Foundation (the charitable organization that has run the annual concours for the past 24 years) has begun inviting handpicked honorees to assemble a retrospective of their work and showcase it in a special class alongside some of the world’s finest examples of rolling automotive art.
This year, the Foundation invited hot rod builder Ken Fenical (better known as Posies) to show a collection of cars he designed and built for customers in his Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, shop over the past 40 years. Though he made his name in the hot rod industry by creating, manufacturing, and selling a line of Super Slider suspension springs for hot rods, his artistic passion gets expressed in the cars he’s built.
As far back as the early ‘80s, Posies got noticed with a yellow 1936 Ford roadster he’d built that not only emulated the padded-top customs he remembered as a kid, but he also advanced the design further by inverting the LaSalle grille and creating his own take on the (at the time) nearly extinct genre. When the mono-chromatic look of the ’90s arrived, Posies took another route and started slicing his scallops horizontally on a 1938 Ford convertible and using multiple contrasting colors to make a statement.
Into the new millennium Posies charged forward with a stretched 1935 Ford roadster called the Aeroliner followed by the Fleetliner, which applied more of his style to a 1947 Chevy Fleetline sedan. Of late Posies has been influenced by the styling’s found in some Rat Rods, but all of his cars are drivers and built to be safely driven down the road. More recently he debuted a 1971 E-type Jaguar with flattened black paint and outfitted it with a 383 Chevy engine, driving it across the country to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
At Amelia Island event this year, the special show class highlighted eight cars he’d built that covered a wide stretch of Posies’ history. On one end was the multicolored 1937 coupe with its 7-inch chop and badass blown 427 poking out of the hood. Owned by John Bolkema of Mahwah, New Jersey, the coupe sounds a lot like a funny car pulling up to the starting line when it’s driving down the street.
Next to it was the 1937 International pickup owned by Arnold Gervasio of Ringoes, New Jersey. Unless you know International trucks, you might think it was a nicely restored pickup, but the bed was shortened, rear fenders widened, new bead lines were added to the bottom of the fenders and bed sides, and the bumpers were split in two.
Beside the truck was Joe Mastrangelo’s 1937 Ford convertible (dubbed Flower Child) from Carmel, New York. Built in 1983, the paint on the car was split horizontally (black on top, red underneath) in a style that was not commonly seen on hot rods of the time, but soon would be. The chopped roof was fixed and, though uncommon for the time, the vehicle featured shaved door handles and hinges.
Back in 1997 Posies was the first person to receive the newly-stamped steel 1932 Ford roadster manufactured by Brookville Roadsters. The renamed Phunkie 1932 was powered by a Ford 302 and utilized a set of Posies Super-Slider springs along with subtle changes to the taillights and fuel door.
A 1936 Ford four-door phaeton also got the Posies treatment when a second cowl section was added behind the forward bench seat, to which Posies constructed a second set of wind wings, all outfitted with black chrome hardware; the same finish used throughout the rest of the black-on-black vehicle. Trim pieces found on the hood sides were extended down the side of the body, and Posies designed the unique five-spoke road wheels.
As outrageous as some people find Posies cars to be, most of them have subtle styling cues (but a lot of them). The Orange Crisp (the name derived from the PPG paint color) 1955 Ford long roof Ranch Wagon incorporated a 1958 Edsel roof skin, dual Crown Vic side trim, and extended headlight brows. Always up for more power in his rides, Posies added a Roush supercharged Coyote engine. Built in the late ’90s, Posies still owns this vehicle.
You can see a mix of rat rod and high tech in Scott Whitaker’s five-window 1929 ThunderRoad pickup, but you may not realize the body was originally a Tudor sedan. The truck bed was fab’d at Posies out of aluminum, and the body was chopped and channeled over a unique tubular chassis.
At the other end of the row might be Posies crowning achievement: the 1937 Studebaker custom Extremeliner, built at the end of the last century. Influenced by 30s-era Cords and the overly-exaggerated roundness of Lincoln Zephyrs (as well as Andre Dubonnet’s Hispano-Suiza “Xenia” coupe from 1937) the Extremeliner utilized a one-off tubular chassis (a rarity in 1994, when work on the car started), a fabricated steel body (with aluminum hood and fender skirts), and fiberglass body panels that were initially made of wood but cast in fiberglass and woodgrain. A Corvette LT1 engine resides under the hood, there is heavy use of wicker for the interior, and the car was painted Luminescence Gold Razzleberry; the first time that color had ever been used on a car.
All of Posies creations pull and tug body panels every which way, squishing them down or exaggerating them as he see fits, just like some of those action painters of the ’60s-era wildly splashed paint onto their canvas to create the vision they saw only in their minds eye. But Posies has always been able to make a statement while delivering the goods. Kinda different? Hell yes! But then again this particular Posies has never been a wall flower. SRM
