after that fateful day, danny felt like he couldn’t escape his newfound powers. they came unexpectedly - one day, he’d forgotten to start the oven for his mom, and terrified of getting yelled at, he pleaded with the oven to heat up quickly. it shot to 500 degrees in a minute, and danny almost burned his hand checking. or the time he was hiking with friends in high school and rocks slid down the side of the mountain, almost knocking them off the ledge, until danny’s fear became so overwhelming that the rocks bounced over the small group, as if they were under a bowl of air. 

there was no rhyme or reason, and it happened so infrequently that danny could uneasily write it off as coincidence. until his third year at community college, when he decided to join the soccer team - and the wind would shift every time he got near the goal, sending the ball soaring through the air straight into the corner of the goal. everyone lauded him as the next big thing, and reps from universities came to watch him play. it felt ridiculous, danny knew he was mediocre at best at sports, but this? out of nowhere, he made every single goal? this was insane. 

and then one day, he was visited by a representative, and took an exam that made absolutely no sense, and two weeks later he got an offer for a full ride to freaking yale university. he was twenty-three, only one year from finishing an associates degree and maybe finding an admin job somewhere, and now yale wanted him to attend their prestigious school, sit next to prestigious future lawyers and businessmen and senators? and play soccer, but that part didn’t really matter - it was almost like an afterthought. 

his parents were thrilled (if not bemused), and danny couldn’t really decline such an incredible offer. they also said he could choose any major, so he went with his imagination and chose anthropology. all those Indiana Jones movies he binged as a kid endlessly were finally making good use. so he packed his bags that summer and moved into the dorms two weeks before the semester started - only to be met by the Admissions Director, Madeline Gaines, and told that he had magical abilities and would need to protect the country from a portal to hell.

personality wise, danny is just a goddamn sweetie pie, head filled with more fluff and laughter than actual serious thought. he enjoys being a watcher rather than a participant in activities, and when you think he’s just in the corner dozing off or glancing into space, he’s usually taking in everything and storing it away for later. but you can trust him (unless he’s one too many drinks down, and then you can never know what’ll come out of his mouth).

So we start the action by showing a field of Mexican-American laborers working the fields with a little boy sitting on the truck, picking the music they listen to.  His father jokes about his choice of music before getting back to work.  Now I’ll be the first to admit that everything that played out next was just this side of tone deaf.  I understand that Magda is the villain here, and wants to see humanity burn, but having a white woman set fire to a field full of brown people, resulting in several deaths kind of defeats the message they’re trying to send with this show, but I will suspend my disbelief for a little while to see how all of this plays out.

All in all, it was a beautiful shot, as gruesome as it was, with the flames, and then seeing Santa Muerte cradling the boy’s father as he died in the flames all while La Llorona played in the background.  The boy tries to save his father, but Santa Muerte uses the Force to push him away, despite not even two minutes earlier claiming she “had no heart for the living”.  Must be something special about this boy.

Cut to 1938 and the boy is all grown up.  Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) just passed his exam to become a detective, the first Chicano detective in Los Angeles.  His Mamá (Adrianna Barraza) prepared him a cake to celebrate the occasion, and we get to meet the rest of La Familia Vega.  First there’s Mateo (Johnathan Nieves), who is seriously adorable.  Next is Josefina (Jessica Garza), who is the baby of the family.  And then finally we get the big brother, Raul (Adam Rodriguez), who “mysteriously” isn’t a part of the main cast.

Anyway, Raul is not happy about his baby brother being a detective, given the Mexican and Mexican-American relations with law enforcement, which... valid.  He has a point.  But Mamá quickly shuts Raul down when he tries to be a Negative Nancy and they celebrate as a family.  Cut to later, and Mamá is walking Tiago to the bus, and they remark about the construction equipment at the end of the street.  Here we’re introduced to the main conflict of the story.  Their neighborhood is set to be demolished to make way for construction for the Arroyo Seco Parkway, the first of the LA freeways.  Mamá remarks about the machines, likening them to animals baring their teeth at her, before Tiago gets on the bus to go to his apartment, because he’s the only member of the family to move away from home.

By the way, I will never complain about the size of my apartment again after seeing how tiny Tiago’s is.

Cut to the next morning, where the phone rings, waking Tiago up, and it’s his new partner on the phone.  Congratulations!  You get to start two days early with no prep time.  Said partner, Detective Lewis Michener, is played by Nathan Lane like you’ve never seen him before.  And as an aside, just hearing him drop the F-bomb made my day.  The reason they’re starting early is because their was a homicide, and the captain himself called them specifically.  The murder is a family of four, dropped in the Los Angeles river bed, their faces painted in Dia De Muertos makeup.  Also, there’s a message scrawled nearby in blood (or red paint)

“You take our heart, we take yours.”  If you haven’t guessed it by now, the hearts of the four victims had been removed.  This all ties back to the Arroyo Seco Parkway and how it’s planned to cut through the heart of the Chicano community.  Michener makes the connection as to why they were called, “It’s a spick thing.”  (Fair warning, that kind of language, while not super common in this show, isn’t exactly uncommon.)

Elsewhere, Mamá is getting off the bus in a fancy part of town, because she’s a maid to Peter Craft (alum Rory Kinnear), who is a German immigrant with two sons and a wife that looks a little strung out.  This scene is pretty filler, but it establishes the dynamic of Craft’s household, with him talking to Mamá before his own wife.  He leaves for work, listening to tape recordings in his car as a way to practice on getting rid of his accent to blend in and “be more American”  It was kind of adorable.

Back at the police precinct, Tiago got blood on his cuff from the crime scene and MIchener tells him to just throw the shirt out.  Que the racist cops who harass Tiago, because the audience needs to understand just how unwelcome a Chicano detective is among his all white peers.  The two visit their captain and discover that their four victims are a wealthy family from Beverly Hills, which judging by everyone’s reactions in the scene is a pretty big deal for some reason.  There was a horrible moment where the captain says “You have no idea how much I wished those bodies were Mexican” before he realizes who is in the room and adds a halfhearted “No Offense.”  I have to say, Tiago has way more patience than I do for shrugging it off.  The captain decides that it’s obviously Mexicans behind the murders and Michener suggests pachucos. 

Now we’re back with Craft, who is a pediatrician, and his current patient is the son of... Natalie Dormer... but now she’s blonde?  Elsa is concerned about her son Frank’s breathing problems and talks with the doctor privately about it, revealing that she’s also a German immigrant, originally from Berlin, “but now we’re in Boyle Heights, with the Jews” (seriously not a fan of how she said that, which I’m guessing is the point, but only time will tell).  There’s a moment between the two, with him offering her his handkerchief when she starts crying.  

After she leaves, we get one of the most disturbing scenes I’ve ever seen.  It takes a lot to unnerve me, but this scene unnerved me.  If you’re going into this show blind, let this be the moment when you find out that all the characters played by Natalie Dormer are all Magda, who shapeshifts into other people to further influence the negative emotions of those around her, bringing out the worst in humanity.  Well, “Elsa” enters the elevator with her “son” and unbuttons her blouse before placing his head against her stomach.  She absorbs him back into herself like some sort of weird reverse-birth, taking him “back to the womb” as it were.  It wasn’t overly graphic, but it unnerved me nonetheless. 

Back at the doctor’s office, one of his nurses asks what he wants for lunch and he says he’ll be going out.  He walks over to his closet and opens it, revealing a Nazi flag and uniform.  Abort!  

Abort!

At the city hall there is a meeting of the City Council, or some division of it involving transportation.  Its a meeting to discuss the Arroyo Seco Parkway, with almost everyone in attendance being Mexican, led, of course, by Tiago’s older brother Raul.  Gotta have that brother-against-brother angle.  The guy leading the meeting is some douchebag named Townsend (Michael Gladis).There’s a standoff between him and Raul over this parkway, with Townsend telling them to “go back where they came from”, which Raul responds rather cheekily to the fact that he was born in the Los Angeles County Hospital, same as him.

Raul: “When progress becomes barbarity, it ceases to be in the public interest.  We are the public, sir, no matter the color of our skin, and we will not be moved.”

Townsend: “Then you will be pushed.”

Naturally from there it ends in police brutality, with the cops on scene beating Raul with their clubs as they drag him from the city hall, despite it being open to the public.  And people wonder why no one likes the police? Although, I do love the fact that they made Raul so well-spoken.  Given how they’re presented as poorer, it would have been so easy to fall back on that illiterate Mexican trope, but they shied away from that, and I’m grateful.

After the meeting, Townsend is walking down the hall with Natalie Dormer by his side, this time as a gray-haired, middle-aged woman?  Man?  It’s unclear at first, until we get a wide shot and we see that she’s wearing a skirt with her masculine suit and tie combo, so definitely a woman.  Personally, I would have been okay if this persona - Alex - had been a man, but that’s just me.  Anyway, Alex is just feeding this blowhard’s ego, and he equates himself to Mussolini, and then Hitler (ABORT!).  The topic turns to more motorways, stuff to keep Townsend in the papers for some unknown purpose.

And we’re back to the Michener and Vega hour, where the two detectives are enjoying their lunch break when we hear drums and look up to see Nazis - I’m sorry, the German-American Bund - walking down the street in full regalia with Craft at their head.  Craft gives a big speech about staying out of foreign affairs (it’s 1938 and WWII is just about to start), saying “America First��.  Michener is giving them the stink eye and it’s at this point I remembered that he’s Jewish, so odds are he knows full well what the ideology behind the Nazi Party, even if their worst crimes are still ahead of them.

Michener insists they go, with the two heading over to Beverly Hills to investigate the home of the murder victims.  Inside there’s a portrait of who I thought was Joseph Smith above the fireplace, which I guess means these people were Mormons.  The radio, when turned on, is playing some Radio Evangelist (this is before Televangelism became a thing), and I think the woman preaching is the last member of our cast, Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé).  The two investigate the house and determine that the family wasn’t murdered there, though they do discover that the father was one of the guys behind the Arroyo Seco Parkway.

The plot thickens.

Cut to a shadowy meeting at the bluffs between Townsend and Baron von Strucker from the MCU.  Ugh, more Nazis.  The new Nazi talks to Townsend about getting him the position of Mayor of Los Angeles, to further their own agenda, and warns him that his driver is a Gestapo agent and has been told to shoot Townsend if the meeting does not go their way.

Later that night, we’re in downtown L.A., presumably in a Mexican-American neighborhood where Mateo works.  There’s some hanky panky going on in the store where he’s stocking shelves where some random dude and his sister, Josefina, are getting to second base.  Mateo puts the kibosh on that quickly, chasing the boy from the store while shouting obscenities, before arguing with this sister, until Mamá shows up and sets them both straight.  There’s a poignant moment between mother and son where he remarks about how as a Chicano, his options for the future are limited, that Tiago was the exception, not the rule.

Speaking of Tiago, he shows up to ask about Santa Muerte and if his mother had heard anything about something going on, as he recognized the face paint on the murder victims.  It’s revealed that he doesn’t believe in Santa Muerte, though his mother does and remarks about him being “marked”, revealing that he was the little boy from the beginning.  We all know that something bigger is going on, but Tiago is unconvinced, and this is the one time we see him and Mamá butt heads.  There’s a moment where the two calm down before we get a really cute scene of Tiago dancing with his mother.

That moment slides into a moment between Los Hermanos Vega, which starts nicely but ends up tense and serious, as they talk about the construction of the parkway to begin on Monday, which requires Tiago to be with the police but his brothers will be with the neighborhood.  I think they’re taking this brother-against-brother thing a little far.

Mamá is praying to Santa Muerte, begging for help, and Santa Muerte actually shows up, calling Mamá “Old Coyote” (I think).  The two argue, with the former mentioning a prophecy and the Vega matriarch begging for any kind of help because she wants to protect her children.  After Santa Muerte leaves, Mamá goes to Tiago’s apartment and implores him to try and stop the protest the next day, before chugging his whiskey.

As the episode started, that’s how we end it, with a Mexican standoff, this time between the police and the residents of Belvidere Heights.  Tiago hands his gun to Michener and tries to talk down his neighborhood, to avoid bloodshed, facing off directly with his brothers who are at the front of the opposing crowd, but unbeknownst to all of them, Magda is there (in her “true” form) pacing in front of the police.  She finds one officer and we see her whispering in his ear, which leads to him firing his gun, killing one of the protesters.  Gunfire erupts and chaos ensues, leading to a full blown riot.  Magda ends up whispering to Raul next and he takes a gun and starts shooting police officers, eventually aiming his gun at Michener.  In a heartbreaking moment, Tiago shoots his own brother to stop him from killing his partner, all while La Llorona is once again playing in the background.

All in all, I’d give the episode an 8/10.  It was a great start, introducing most of the key players involved and getting the conflict started right away, but there are still a lot of questions.  Also, there were too many Nazis in this for my liking.  I understand the point they’re trying to make, being a parallel to today, with Nazis being everywhere and no one batting an eye about it, but it’s still unsettling.

Can’t wait to see how this all turns out.

Together they had two children. First a son, whom they named Michael, and then a daughter; Alycia. Alycia Acosta, nicknamed Aly by her father, grew up loved. The apple of her father’s eye, her big brother’s best friend, and the darling daughter her mother had always wanted. She had no reason to ever leave Miami. A loving family. A rich, cultural heritage. All the shopping a girl could ever do, and the most gorgeous beaches in the whole world. On which, she spent most of her youth.

Learning to surf started out as a hobby for Alycia. Just a way for her to spend time with her older brother, Michael, but quickly she became very good. The winter of her freshman year Aly qualified for a national surfing competition that would take place in summer of the following year. An amazing opportunity for someone so young that would take her all the way to Hawaii, but by Spring the budding teen would never touch a board again. She’d fallen in love with the waves alongside her brother. When he was taken from her, so was her passion for the sport. Michael’s passing was a horrific tragedy. While he was outside a club in South Beach a drive by shooting occurred. Police deduced the gunman was after a rival gang affiliate, and that Michael was just a random bystander caught in the crossfires. The Acostas lost not one but two children that night.

The grief of losing her brother soured Miami for Alycia. Grief changed her parents too. Their lofty expectations for the eldest Acosta shifting to her. It was too much for Aly. She couldn’t stand them anymore, or the sight of the ocean. Everything about her once beloved home made her sick. She couldn’t get out fast enough. Upon her high school graduation she left the state entirely for college in the West. Nevada was far from life in Florida, but it was what she needed to grieve. She lost herself in the college experience. Rushing a sorority, dating men as well as women, and of course a little bit of academics. Aly majored in business. Her family had instilled a knack for it in her. With a head for numbers, too, she ended up in accounting with plans to take the Certified Accountant Exam upon graduation. It was a solid life goal, but for all her planning Aly was still impulsive. A birthday weekend in Vegas and a few too many later she married a perfect stranger. Not that she had any real recollection of it the next morning with the worst hangover over of her life and a flight to catch.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Accounting Alycia’s family begged her to come home. Her parents even offered her a position in their real-estate office, but she didn’t want to move back to Miami. Even years later her grief was suffocating. Being back there just made it worse, but where did she go? No place felt like home, not that she thought it would without her brother. So, she acted on impulse and followed a girlfriend to Chicago. It didn’t work out between them, but Aly found a job that paid for her MBA. She was doing well in her career, building a solid reputation for herself in the industry, but it was hard for Alycia to stay in one place. The desire to be her own boss so she could satiate her wanderlust seemed like a far off dream. Even in her success she was years away from being able to afford such a thing. Ironically, another loss gave her the chance.

Abuela Acosta passed at the beautifully ripe old age of ninety-three, asleep in her bed beneath the roof of multi-million dollar estate. As her only granddaughter Alycia was left a large inheritance check among other holdings, which would supply her the resources to live out her dreams and much, much more. There was just one, little, quite easily forgettable snag… Aly was married. To a man whose name she could barely remember, no less. Without a prenup all that money, legally, wasn’t just hers. She needed a divorce, but where in the world was her estranged husband? A private investigator found Arthur Kanemoto on an island a short ferry ride West of Los Angeles. A dreamy landscape of white sand beaches and palm trees, Catalina Island, a picturesque backdrop to an ugly divorce. She and Arthur did not get along. However, in the end, Aly got what she came for, and so much more she never expected.

For the last half of her life, home had only been a place with four walls. As empty in meaning as she felt inside until she found Catalina. “ I wanted to end up on an island “ didn’t sound wrong, but it was so much more than that. It was home; in a hotel room close to the ocean, floating on a surfboard in the Pacific, and in the arms of old friends and new. She decided to return to the island after a couple days back in Chicago, but in truth her mind had been made up for awhile. For all that was wrong in her life. Aly’s time in Catalina made everything feel right.

The cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears, or the sea.

Back in Catalina, Aly has decided to do something with her inheritance besides live a life of obscene luxury and bum it on the beach. Something that might actually make her Abuela proud. With the dream to be her own boss she’s begun work on her own tax consulting business. With proximity to Los Angeles her new client pool is composed entirely of the illustriously rich and famous. A profitable endeavor, not that she needs it to be, that has momentarily appeased even her parents and their ridiculous expectations. Golden Rule alive & well in California

The State Bar of California has failed to effectively discipline corrupt attorneys, allowing lawyers to repeatedly violate professional standards and harm members of the public, according to a long-awaited audit of the agency released Thursday.

The audit of the State Bar was ordered last year by the Legislature in the wake of a Los Angeles Times investigation that documented how the now-disgraced attorney Tom Girardi cultivated close relationships with the agency and kept an unblemished law license despite over 100 lawsuits against him or his firm — with many alleging misappropriation of client money.***

Girardi was once a top plaintiffs’ attorney and Democratic powerbroker who gained reality TV fame on “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alongside his third wife, Erika. His downfall in December 2020 was in part triggered by a judge finding that he had misappropriated millions from families of those killed in an Indonesian plane crash. But after the collapse of his Wilshire Boulevard law firm, scores of clients came forward saying they were swindled by Girardi and The Times documented a trail of misconduct allegations going back decades.

Earlier this month, a Chicago law firm accused Girardi and other lawyers at his defunct firm of running “the largest criminal racketeering enterprise in the history of plaintiffs’ law,” pocketing millions from clients, vendors and fellow attorneys.

That Girardi’s serial misconduct went unchecked for decades has forced a reckoning among the legal establishment. In addition to the State Bar’s acknowledgement of past mistakes, the agency has also been conducting a broad investigation into whether its own employees or other agency insiders helped Girardi skirt scrutiny. Rich people exploit immigrants? Who knew?

The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia described it as “modern-day slavery.”

A human smuggling ring allegedly trafficked over 200 workers from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala to provide labor on south Georgia onion farms, according to a federal indictment. They obtained agricultural worker visas for their victims and then forced them to perform physically demanding labor for little or no pay and live in squalid conditions. Members of the ring sold or traded some workers among themselves and sexually assaulted some.

Some died as a result of the workplace conditions, the indictment alleges.

It wasn’t until one worker reported the abuses in 2016 that the federal government caught on, launching a five-year, multi-agency investigation dubbed Operation Blooming Onion. Now, 24 defendants — who were operating and receiving visas until 2021 amid the federal investigation — are awaiting plea and court proceedings. Harvard prof joins the fight

Attorney Alan Dershowitz has taken on a Jan. 6 client after spending a year on the sidelines speaking out about government overreach and constitutional rights violations.

His deciding factor was the fact that one defendant was a law school student whose diploma was withheld and who has been prohibited from taking the bar exam because he has five counts hanging over his head from entering the Capitol.

“I said I disagreed with him fundamentally [about Jan. 6], and he said, ‘I could care less,’” Dershowitz told the Washington Examiner. “He made a persuasive point to me: He graduated from law school, was denied admission to the bar, and I generally take First Amendment cases like this.”

The new client is Brady Knowlton, 41, who was a fisherman a decade ago and starred in several episodes of Catfishin’ Kings on Animal Planet. He was also a financial consultant in the Texas energy sector but now lives in Utah.***

[Video recording of the riot] itself is silent, but the body language of the officers clearly tells the story, Dershowitz argued. He is demanding the release of audio under a federal law that requires prosecutors to turn over all exculpatory evidence to the defense.

“There is no crime. The police invited these people to come in and not do any damage and leave when they are told to leave,” Dershowitz said. “It seems clear from the pictures on the video that this is the message being sent. The audio will confirm what we see on the tapes.”***

“There is a double standard of justice. The people on the West Coast did far more damage,” said Dershowitz, referring to Black Lives Matter and antifa protesters involved in arson and looting following the George Floyd verdict. “But because the Jan. 6 people are supporting a cause the Justice Department wasn’t in support of, they are applying a double standard.”

Dershowitz is a Democrat who voted for President Joe Biden and doesn’t believe that the election should be overturned. But he has continuously supported underdogs in legal fights, one example being when he joined O.J. Exceeded the limit on dead African American male drug addicted prostitutes

Onetime Democratic donor Ed Buck was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for drug and sex crimes determined to have caused the overdose deaths of two men.

Prosecutors and Buck’s attorneys have agreed to postpone a hearing to determine how much Buck must pay in restitution while his lawyers gather records of his finances. Buck asked the court to “take a look at my life in total” and not “the horrible caricature the government painted me as" before being sentenced, according to the Los Angeles Times.***

The two-week trial consisted of male witnesses saying Buck used the gay hookup site Adam4Adam to advertise his interest in “party and play” sessions, a term for using meth during sex. One witness, Carlos, claimed to have visited Buck's apartment, where Buck would inject him with meth and GHB, a party drug, about 20 times over a six-month period.

A jury convicted Buck of several felonies in 2021, including distributing meth resulting in death and enticement to cross state lines to engage in prostitution.

Buck's actions resulted in the deaths of Gemmel Moore, 26, and Timothy Dean, 55, who both overdosed on meth they'd been injected with in July 2017 and January 2019, respectively, jurors found. Dane Brown, another man who met up with Buck, was injected with three doses of the drug in September 2019 before he managed to make his way to a nearby gas station and contact the authorities, who arrested Buck a week later.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC/Gray News) – As a sergeant in the U.S. Army, Justin Bullock has endured demanding training, strict military discipline and even enemy fire, but nothing could prepare him for the stress and violence he faced as a teacher at Liberty Hill Academy.

“I have a lot of trauma now,” Bullock told WCSC.

He was deployed to Iraq in 2009 and was preparing to begin training to become a drill sergeant to instruct new soldiers. He says his future is now in jeopardy after suffering multiple injuries at Liberty Hill.

“I doubt that I will probably step my foot back inside a school in general for a very long time. I am terrified ... I don’t want to get beaten anymore,” Bullock said. “I don’t want to get sexually harassed any more. I don’t want to fear for my life.”

Last month, Bullock attempted to break up a fight between two students and was punched in the head multiple times.

He continued working but the next day went to the hospital where they took a brain scan and determined that he had a neck strain and was recovering from a concussion.

“By that Saturday, I was having major anxiety just like rethinking everything because I was also beaten in the back of my head in February 2021 by a student,” Bullock said. “I was also sexually harassed by a student who was also putting his hands on me. It took the school two and a half months to get him out of my classroom.”***

Liberty Hill Academy is an alternative school for special needs students and those with behavioral issues.

Teachers and staff are given extra training, and Bullock has even taught at alternative schools in other districts, but he says they are wholly unprepared to deal with some of these students.***

A South Carolina judge set a $25,000 bond for a suspect in a mall shooting on Saturday that left 14 people injured, according to the Columbia Police Department. 

Jewayne Price, 22, will be on house arrest but allowed to travel to and from work while wearing an ankle monitor if he posts bond. ***

"We don’t believe this was random," Columbia Police Chief W.H. "Skip" Holbrook said at a news conference. "We believe they knew each other and something led to the gunfire."

Evidence collected at the scene indicates at least three people displayed guns and two firearms were used, according to police. 

The 14 victims range in age from 15 to 73. At least nine of them suffered gunshot wounds, while the other five were injured while trying to flee the chaos.

A 33-year-old California woman was arrested after she flew to Michigan and rented an Airbnb to meet with a 15-year-old boy she had met online, authorities said.

Stephanie Sin, of San Francisco, was taken into custody on April 10 in Novi, located about 29 miles outside Detroit, and charged with one count each of child sexually abusive activity and using a computer to commit a crime, FOX2 Detroit reported.

Sin met the teen on an app when he was 14 and the two began conversing over text messages that turned progressively more explicit, according to Novi police.

The 33-year-old bought a plane ticket that weekend and rented an Airbnb in Royal Oak for month so she could meet the now 15-year-old in person, police said. A Georgia man is being charged with murder after allegedly leaving his own grandmother in a freezer for months.

Robert Tincher III, 29, was charged with felony murder after he allegedly put his grandmother, Doris Cumming, 82, in a freezer for months, according to Fox 5. 

Floyd County Police said that the discovery of Cumming's body was made on Thursday in a home that the two shared in Armuchee.

An investigator said that Cumming was still alive when she was put into the freezer.

"From what we determined, at the time, he believed she was still breathing and had some movement at the time she was going into the freezer," said Floyd County Investigator Brittany Werner.

The body remained in the freezer for months, and police say Tincher moved the freezer to a different location when the body was still inside it.

Police said that they believe that Cumming was injured in December after a fall, and that Tincher didn't seek medical attention for his grandmother, instead dragging her through the home.

A warrant for Tincher's arrest states that he "heard and saw numerous bones break." He wrapped Cumming in plastic bags and placed her in a large freezer, according to police.

Charges state that Tincher "acknowledged her back broke going into the freezer."***

Tincher told an investigator that he didn't call 911 because there was a warrant out for his arrest for an incident involving terroristic threats that he allegedly made on social media aimed at his wife.

He also told the investigator how much he loved his grandmother.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman has been arrested for helping more than 100 people obtain unlawful licenses, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

According to a tweet from FHP, Afsaneh Baghai-Amri, 56, is “a subcontracted employee serving as an interpreter” who would help people at the Duval County Tax Collector’s office on West 44th Street.

Police were tipped off when an employee at the tax collector’s office alerted Florida Highway Patrol that 137 people, who all applied for their driver’s licenses, listed the same Ponte Vedra address as their own. The address was confirmed to be the same as Baghai-Amri’s address.

Most of those people were Afghan immigrants, according to the report.

Baghai-Amri was caught in the act after FHP set up surveillance at the tax collector’s office and her house. In one of the videos, FHP observed the woman helping an applicant with answers to the test. FHP went to the tax collector’s office when she had just completed two application forms for two different men. They both listed their address as hers.

The woman admitted to FHP that neither men lived at her house and that she was trying to help them get employment. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., is demanding answers from Attorney General Merrick Garland on why the Justice Department is no longer seeking the death penalty against a man accused of murdering his estranged wife, Fort Campbell soldier Brittney Niecol Silvers.

Federal prosecutors announced in February 2021 they were seeking the death penalty against Victor Everette Silvers, who is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 14, 2018, shooting and killing of Army Sgt. Silvers on her base in Kentucky. ***

the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Kentucky filed a motion to withdraw the notice to seek the death penalty against Silvers. The motion says the attorney general "authorized and directed" the death penalty withdrawal on April 7.***

Cotton is an Army veteran who serves on the Senate Armed Services and Judiciary committees. He called Silvers a "serial domestic abuser" who shot and murdered a United States soldier "in front of her apartment on a U.S. Army base in 2018."***

According to federal prosecutors, Victor Silvers arrived at Sgt. Silvers' residence at night and began banging on her door. Police initially said that 11 people were shot, but they updated those numbers at a noon news conference. They now say that 10 people were shot, 2 were killed, and 5 others had other related injuries such as broken bones while attempting to escape the shooting.

An overnight shooting at a South Carolina club left at least nine people injured in the second mass shooting in the state within two days this Easter weekend.

A gang member convicted of murder has vowed to tattoo Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon’s name on his face, according to a new report.

Luis Angel Hernandez made the comment after crediting the prosecutor with a policy that reduced charges in his case, as heard in audio obtained by Fox News for an episode of Tucker Carlson Originals.

"I’m going to get that n****’s name on my face. That’s a champ right there. F****** Gascon," Hernandez said in a recorded phone call from jail.

The audio, played during an episode titled "Suicide of Los Angeles," discusses a controversial directive Gascon implemented barring "gang enhancements" that allow for additional punishments to be added to the felony charges for a person who commits a crime "for the benefit of, at the discretion of, or in association with any criminal street gang."

Hernandez, who was convicted of fatally shooting a marijuana deliveryman during an armed robbery, is associated with the OTF gang, Fox News reported.

Prior to the new directive, Hernandez faced several enhancements to his charges, including for being a gang member.

City of Brotherly Shooting

After setting a record for homicides in 2021, Philadelphia continues to be plagued by gun crime in 2022. In response to the most violent year in its history, the city included a “historic investment of $155 million” in the fiscal year 2022 budget. The money went to “proven anti-violence strategies” such as community violence intervention programs, enrichment opportunities, workforce development training programs, and after-school programs.

None of it is working, as evidenced by the recent wave of gun violence in the city over the last four days. The city has yet to learn that the best way to stop crime is to arrest criminals and keep them in jail.

Between Thursday and Sunday, 39 people were shot, and nine were killed in the shootings. Twenty-one of these shootings occurred on Thursday alone, which fell two victims shy of the city's record for shootings in a day, set in July 2020. The victims ranged in age from 3 to 65.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A home invasion involving men pretending to be police officers in Philadelphia ended with a deadly shooting when the victim turned the tables on the suspects, police say.

Just after 10 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the 7200 block of Battersby Street in Mayfair for the report of a shooting.

According to authorities, a 25-year-old man had just returned home to a duplex on the block.

After parking his car in a rear driveway, the resident walked up to the steps to his front door when he was approached by two males.

Police say at least one male was armed with a gun and had a police badge around his neck, which turned out to be fake. He identified himself as a police officer.

The two males then forced the resident into his property and demanded money.

"They tied his hands with zip ties around his back and threatened to kill him if he made any sudden moves. That's when our victim realized these individuals were not police officers," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

According to police, the 25-year-old victim was able to free his hands and grab a gun from his pocket.

A former Maryland mayor pleaded guilty to posting revenge porn online, agreeing to a deal that will allow him to avoid time behind bars.

Former Cambridge Mayor Andrew Bradshaw was sentenced to five years and five days of imprisonment after pleading guilty to five counts of distributing revenge porn online, but all the incarceration time has been suspended. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised probation and fined $5,000, and he must complete 100 hours of community service and pay $750 to the woman in the nude photos he admitted to posting online without her knowledge or consent.

Bradshaw had initially faced a maximum sentence of two years in jail and a $5,000 fine for each count, according to court documents.

The former mayor resigned in January after Bradshaw admitted to law enforcement that he had created several Reddit accounts to post nude photos of an ex-girlfriend, who said she had given him the photos while they were romantically involved but didn’t give him permission to distribute them. The former mayor is alleged to have posted explicit photos of the woman with sexually degrading captions attached, often including racial slurs.

Kill someone and serve <4 yrs?

Federal prosecutors will not bring a case against the former Chicago cop who killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, U.S. Attorney John Lausch’s office announced Monday.

Jason Van Dyke has already been tried and convicted in Cook County court for McDonald’s death, and federal law sets an extraordinarily high bar to prove criminal civil-rights violations in such a case — “more stringent than the state charges on which Mr. Van Dyke was convicted,” according to a statement from Lausch’s office.***

Van Dyke was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated battery by a Cook County jury in 2018; he spent a little more than three years behind bars for McDonald’s death before his release in February. The 2014 shooting, captured on police video, sent shock waves from neighborhood streets to the mayor’s office at City Hall when footage was released more than a year later.

Van Dyke withdrew his appeal of the Cook County conviction in fall 2020, so authorities’ decision not to charge on the federal level likely marks the end of his legal journey.***

California Budget Boosts Health Care For Older Immigrants

California will soon be paying healthcare bills for low-income people aged 50 and over living in the country illegally, part of an expansion by Medicaid that aims to move the nation’s most populous state toward the Democrats’ goal of ensuring everyone has health insurance Has .

The new coverage will eventually cost taxpayers about $ 1.3 billion a year, money that is part of the new state budget that Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislatures unveiled on Friday evening. The budget is due to be voted on Monday in the state legislature, with Newsom likely to sign it before the state’s fiscal year begins on Thursday.

California has spent a lot of money making sure everyone has health insurance. The state spends millions each year helping people pay their monthly insurance premiums and is the only state that gives grants to families of four that earn up to $ 157,200 a year. California also taxes people who refuse to take out health insurance.

However, according to UC Berkeley Labor Center, about 3.2 million people in the state are projected to be out of health insurance over the next year. Almost half of these people live in the country illegally, which means they are not eligible for full Medicaid benefits and other health insurance assistance programs.

Proponents have been pushing for years that all low-income immigrants should be eligible for Medicaid. But the Newsom government has resisted the cost – an estimated $ 2.4 billion a year according to a legal analysis – and instead opted for a phased approach.

Still, the inclusion of benefits for immigrants 50 and older was a victory for some health care advocates whose efforts were hampered last year due to a budget deficit projected by the pandemic.

“I have dedicated my whole life to growing vegetables and fruits in the Coachella Valley. I am already old and can no longer work in the fields. It’s time for California to think about the health of people like me who gave everything without getting anything, ”said Josefa Barragán, member of TODEC, an immigrant advocacy group in California’s Inland Empire and Coachella Valley.

The budget proposal also makes more elderly people eligible for Medicaid by abolishing the “wealth test”. In general, people on low incomes are eligible for Medicaid. But for people 65 and over, having a low income is not enough. You are also not allowed to have assets of more than $ 2,000 per month for individuals and $ 3,000 per month for couples.

Assets exclude homes and second cars, but include things like cash in checking and savings accounts and some jewelry, excluding wedding or engagement rings and heirlooms. Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access California, called the wealth test “an antiquated guideline that resulted in seniors and people with disabilities losing their health insurance when they have savings – even a modest amount for housing or an emergency.”

The removal of the asset test will add an additional 17,802 people to the state’s Medicaid program in 2020, according to an analysis by the Department of Health, which costs about $ 220 million a year.

The budget proposal is an agreement between Newsom and the state’s top two legislative leaders – Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Speaker of Parliament Anthony Rendon. All three are democrats with large majorities in both houses of the legislature.

The proposal equates to $ 262.6 billion in government spending, including the record reserves of $ 25.2 billion. However, it is not a final budget agreement between the three parties as some important details have not yet been finalized. Legislators are still negotiating with Newsom over details of a rate hike for childcare providers and how to spend $ 4 billion fighting forest fires and the drought.

In the early 1970s, the Acosta family immigrated from Puerto Rico to the Miami area of Florida where they owned and operated a real estate business. It was also in Miami that Manny Acosta, the eldest Acosta son, met his bride, Amy Wilson. A lifelong South Beach resident. The moment their eyes locked, they swore, it was true love. Together they had two children. First a son, whom they named Michael, and then a daughter; Alycia. Alycia Acosta, nicknamed Aly by her father, grew up loved. The apple of her father’s eye, her big brother’s best friend, and the darling daughter her mother had always wanted. She had no reason to ever leave Miami. A loving family. A rich, cultural heritage. All the shopping a girl could ever do, and the most gorgeous beaches in the whole world. On which, she spent most of her youth.

Learning to surf started out as a hobby for Alycia. Just a way for her to spend time with her older brother, Michael, but quickly she became very good. The winter of her freshman year Aly qualified for a national surfing competition that would take place in summer of the following year. An amazing opportunity for someone so young that would take her all the way to Hawaii, but by Spring the budding teen would never touch a board again. She’d fallen in love with the waves alongside her brother. When he was taken from her, so was her passion for the sport. Michael’s passing was a horrific tragedy. While he was working as a bouncer outside a club in South Beach a drive by shooting occurred. Police deduced the gunman was after a rival gang affiliate, and that Michael was just a random bystander caught in the crossfires. The Acostas lost not one but two children that night.

The grief of losing her brother soured Miami for Alycia. She couldn’t stand the sight of the ocean. Everything about her once beloved home made her sick. She couldn’t get out fast enough. Upon her high school graduation she left the state entirely for college in the West. Nevada was far from life in Florida, but it was what she needed to grieve. She lost herself in the college experience. Rushing a sorority, dating men as well as women, and of course a little bit of academics. Aly majored in business. Her family had instilled a knack for it in her. With a head for numbers, too, she ended up in accounting with plans to take the Certified Accountant Exam upon graduation. It was a solid life goal, but for all her planning Aly was still impulsive. A birthday weekend in Vegas and a few too many later she married a perfect stranger. Not that she had any real recollection of it the next morning with the worst hangover over of her life and a flight to catch.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Accounting Alycia’s family begged her to come home. Her parents even offered her a position in their real-estate office, but she didn’t want to move back to Miami. Even years later her grief was suffocating. Being back there just made it worse, but where did she go? No place felt like home, not that she thought it would without her brother. So, she acted on impulse and followed a girlfriend to Chicago. It didn’t work out between them, but Aly found a job that paid for her MBA. She was doing well in her career, building a solid reputation for herself in the industry, but it was hard for Alycia to stay in one place. The desire to be her own boss so she could satiate her wanderlust seemed like a far off dream. Even in her success she was years away from being able to afford such a thing. Ironically, another loss gave her the chance.

California will soon be paying healthcare bills for low-income people aged 50 and over living in the country illegally, part of an expansion by Medicaid that aims to move the nation’s most populous state toward the Democrats’ goal of ensuring everyone has health insurance Has .

The new coverage will eventually cost taxpayers about $ 1.3 billion a year, money that is part of the new state budget that Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislatures unveiled on Friday evening. The budget is due to be voted on Monday in the state legislature, with Newsom likely to sign it before the state’s fiscal year begins on Thursday.

However, according to UC Berkeley Labor Center, about 3.2 million people in the state are projected to be out of health insurance over the next year. Almost half of these people live in the country illegally, which means they are not eligible for full Medicaid benefits and other health insurance assistance programs.

Proponents have been pushing for years that all low-income immigrants should be eligible for Medicaid. But the Newsom government has resisted the cost – an estimated $ 2.4 billion a year according to a legal analysis – and instead opted for a phased approach.

Still, the inclusion of benefits for immigrants 50 and older was a victory for some health care advocates whose efforts were hampered last year due to a budget deficit projected by the pandemic.

“I have dedicated my whole life to growing vegetables and fruits in the Coachella Valley. I am already old and can no longer work in the fields. It’s time for California to think about the health of people like me who gave everything without getting anything, ”said Josefa Barragán, member of TODEC, an immigrant advocacy group in California’s Inland Empire and Coachella Valley.

The budget proposal also makes more elderly people eligible for Medicaid by abolishing the “wealth test”. In general, people on low incomes are eligible for Medicaid. But for people 65 and over, having a low income is not enough. You are also not allowed to have assets of more than $ 2,000 per month for individuals and $ 3,000 per month for couples.

Assets exclude homes and second cars, but include things like cash in checking and savings accounts and some jewelry, excluding wedding or engagement rings and heirlooms. Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access California, called the wealth test “an antiquated guideline that resulted in seniors and people with disabilities losing their health insurance when they have savings – even a modest amount for housing or an emergency.”

The removal of the asset test will add an additional 17,802 people to the state’s Medicaid program in 2020, according to an analysis by the Department of Health, which costs about $ 220 million a year.

The budget proposal is an agreement between Newsom and the state’s top two legislative leaders – Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Speaker of Parliament Anthony Rendon. All three are democrats with large majorities in both houses of the legislature.

So are you ready for this rad guide to finalizing our long stay visitor visa?! Here we go… Once you arrive in Paris at the airport you must go through customs and you get your passport/visa stamped with a date. We arrived in Paris on March 2, 2018. Wow, feels like years ago.

This dated stamp is very important because it is your ticking time bomb to finalizing your visa. You get 90 days from the date of that stamp to send your OFII (French Office for Immigration and Integration) application and a copy of your stamped visa. Then you wait patiently for your convocation letters. Convocation is a fancy word for a letter summoning you to complete your visa process. You usually will get two letters for two separate appointments.

Once you get the letter in the mail you will get an appointment for a medical exam. This appointment is outside of Paris but our Metro passes worked fine. We were lucky to get our appointment scheduled for 10:30 am. I was dreading a 8:00 am appointment which would mean we would have to bring Olivia with us so she was in school. It took about 45 minutes to get there and we arrived an hour early. We stood in line outside and after waiting about 40 minutes Antz realized we were waiting in the refugees seeking asylum line. Whoopsie. If you have an appointment you just go to the door and show the security guard your letter.

  This appointment is to get a chest x-ray to prove you don’t have tuberculosis (how is that still a thing?) we also had our blood drawn, had a quick medical questionnaire with a doctor and did I mention I had to be topless TWICE?!

I knew I would have to take my shirt off for the chest x-ray but I thought I could leave my bra on. We had to navigate the whole appointment with our terrible French and there seemed to be only a few doctors who spoke English. I reluctantly disrobed and went into a room with no female doctor as I anticipated, but a tiny male doctor who was intent on having a conversation with me about the Royal Wedding while I held my boobs awkwardly.

He tells me to stand in front of the x-ray machine and press my boobs into the screen. I’m like, okay anything to stay in Paris, I guess? He then tells me to put my arms down and put my necklace in my mouth so it won’t show up in the x-ray. Then he asks me if I attended the royal wedding? Do I personally know Meghan Markle because she is from Los Angeles? Then he tried to make me answer these annoying questions with my Olivia necklace in my mouth while I tried to keep my boobs on a metal x-ray machine. This really happened. This doctor was as tall as Olivia and he was one of the only English speaking doctors. I heard him say the exact same thing to the next woman who went in. She sounded more amused than I was.

So after I survived that trauma, I went into another room. There a doctor who doesn’t speak English. He weighed me (I’ve lost 10 pounds!!) measured my height, gave me an eye test and drew my blood (ouchie). He was amazing with sign language so I understood everything. Then sent me to go wait again.

The last room is another take off your top area and then you walk into a small office. This time I kept my bra on because I was feeling like an unpaid prostitute. I casually sat down and spoke to a handsome doctor who had to use Google to translate our conversation. He explained that I was healthy, asked me some questions and stamped a certificate stating I was all good. He checked my heartbeat which is why I needed my shirt off. So ladies, wear a nice bra because you want to impress!

Then it was over. Hooray!

The front desk gives you the signed and stamped medical certificates and then you take the long, hot bus back into Paris. The funny thing is, the city we were in had this modern tram so we wanted to try to take it back into Paris. We hopped on and noticed we were heading further away from Paris so we took it back to the original station.

Our next appointment was a week later, also scheduled for 10:00 am. This OFII office was located in the 11th so it was close by. This time we knew to walk right in. We waited in a room for about a half an hour and listened to the three clerks interact with the people. Most of the people waiting spoke French but the few that spoke English ended up with the guy clerk. There was a mean lady and a nice-sounding lady. After hearing the mean lady, we crossed our fingers we would be called by the nice one. Luckily, she called my name! She asked for my paperwork and only spoke French. Since we hired a visa consultant, I knew everything she would ask for so it was easy to understand. She accepted all my paperwork and didn’t have any issues. She asked me if my husband was here and I called Antz over. He handed over his papers and she told me to relax and breathe as she stamped our visas.

I have never said Merci more in my life. I was so happy! Guess what? Five months before March (October) we get to start the process all over again for our renewal!

We decided to celebrate by going to lunch at one of the most touristy places in Paris.

I was feeling officially French but then we got a waiter who didn’t have time for me ordering in French. I literally was saying “Je voudrais oeufs avec frommage et un croissant beurre.” He then impatiently said “What do you want?” Le Sigh.

I am destined to never speak French.

This is what we brought to our visa appointment:

Proof of residence (lease agreement or housing attestation) The clerk asked if we had a utility bill in our name but our utilities are included in our rent so she said okay.

Medical certificate (this is why you need to go to the first appointment) I’ve also heard some people may need to bring a vaccination chart, they just asked me if I was vaccinated for tetanus and I said yes when I was pregnant with Olivia.

Passport with your stamped visa (I still hate the picture the LA French consulate took)

Another passport size photo (remember when I bought $96 worth of visa photos?)

A receipt showing you paid your tariffs. Our timbres were €250 each. Children do not have to attend this appointment or pay a tariff.
