Ahriman... why was it always ahriman?
No matter how many other types of voidsent they fought, somehow it always came back to the damn Ahriman, didn’t it? Never could JUST be imps, or deepeyes, or little voidsent, easy to kill. No, no... always got to the mid-tier.
Luckily, Khy and Def were getting good at dealing with them.
For as unassuming as each was on their own, Khy skeletal and crippled and always looking as if he was ready to lie down and let the vultures take him, Def chubby and shy and quick to blush, for all the world seeming as if she couldn’t hurt a fly... together they spilled the voidsent’s blackened ichor on the stone below, drawing screeches of rage and fury with every blow.
Defiant stayed forward, her shield blazing with radiant aether, sword biting at tender wings and wildly-spinning pupil, her teeth grit tight. It was a massive one, teeth as big as her palm gnashing at her and finding no purchase in the violet armor she favored... and as it tried to rip her to shreds, Khy could dart forward and press his hands to it’s greasy, slick body. It howled, slobbering as the man pulled out handfuls of materia with every brush, tossing them aside without hesitation.
And yet when it turned to the more helpless man, drooling and screeching, it found no relief. As it tried to erupt the earth below him, Khyran shot back, a jet of blue flame alighting under his false leg and throwing him free of the magic... and the action allowed Defiant to step in, crying out as aether danced along her blade, thrusting into it’s back and ripping free in a spurt of foul-smelling blood. It had to turn again, lest she rend it to shreds, and that only allowed Khyran to close in yet again.
Together, they kept it busy, blocking and dodging and slowly reducing it into dark-tinted materia that pinged off the floor... and yet for as well-practiced as they were, as it fell to the ground, eye spinning, Defiant slipped.
As it let out a final, piercing scream, she darted before Khyran, lifting her shield.
And in it’s death throes, she met it’s eye.
Her head spun, the sound of of it’s voice ringing in her horn, muting the world as she fell to one knee. Her eyes were wide, staring frantically. Khy was gone. The voidsent was gone. The world, everything, all vanished into darkness.
“K-khy? Khy!? KHY, W-WHERE--I C-CAN’T...”
She threw both hands out and found nothing but the stone below, cold and damp, her breath starting to catch in her throat as she groped for... something. Anything... in the ringing silence after the screech she couldn’t even hear her armor scrape against the floor.
“Khy!! Khy! D-don’t--where are y-you, please, I can’t find...!”
Thin fingers brushed against her cheek and she screamed, trying to spin... only to feel someone wrap their arms around her.
She knew that hug.
“K...khy... K-khy, I... I c-can’t... Khy, I c-can’t see you...”
And in the muted sound of her single horn, she could make out a very soft, familiar, pained voice, the warmth of his breath just barely touching her cheek.
“Oh... fuck.”
