Random sketching thing I digitally do: Whenver I've got a rough sketch, and I'm not sure how to do something right, I put the rough sketch to 50% and then draw over it on another layer twice, making two just-about-as-rough and usually completely different guesswork sketches:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then take those two rough guesswork sketches, put them to 50%, merge down, and repeat the same, by drawing their rough average twice
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then just keep repeating that - drawing according to the line that looks right/better wherever I see one, and going by the rough average where I can't tell where the good line is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just averaging out the combination of guesswork and working over the guesswork that I got right the last time, until I've got something I'm satisfied with, and then clean up the lineart and add details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I do the same with shading. Make two layers with a rough but unrelated guesswork of where the shadows should be, and then average them out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after some clean-up, it's time to add some colour and final highlights. I'm not good with palettes so forgive the eye strain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wasn't planning on making a whole-ass tutorial out of this, I only meant to do a quick post about my lineart sketching method, but I got distracted and didn't have anything more important that I should have been doing so there you are, I guess.

how long does it take you to draw and colour? since you post everyday which is great for me :D any tips for colouring cause Im still tryna figure all that out
hmm welllll, i don't exactly time how long it takes to draw but my partner said that sometimes i'll be working on a piece when they go to sleep and i'll still be working on it when they wake up 7 hours later so...my guess is anywhere from 3-8 hours each depending on complexity? at least for the art that i normally post, most of which is relatively simple.
not entirely sure what kind of tips you were looking for, but i'll just throw out some of my thought processes and stuff i try to keep in mind whenever i color. i'm gonna try and keep these relatively to the point so i won't go into much detail on art terms n whatnot, BUT i am also pretty terrible at explaining things so if you need clarification on anything, feel free to ask!
(sorry it's so longggg, i got carried away. i am...very wordy when it comes to art lol)
i like to block in the colors during the sketching stage before i do the lineart, especially for pieces where i know i want to do something funky with the color palette. you can see this in a lot of my process shots. doing colors in the planning stage just gives me a lot more freedom to focus purely on the colors and shading and how they work with the composition, without having to worry about the minute details like making sure the colors are inside the lines.
in order to save time while coloring, i'll usually just select the negative space (after making sure all the lineart is closed) > expand selection by 1 pixel (to make sure the edges are hidden within the liineart) > invert selection > fill bucket, then use clipping layers above that to color individual areas.
layer modes are your friend! i use multiply, overlay, and glow dodge (this one may be specific to mangastudio?) in almost every one of my drawings, but it's definitely worth playing around with all of the modes just to familiarize yourself with them if you haven't already.
color is honestly SO subjective. i'm never a fan of color picking (from source material or my own refs or whatever) bc while it may have its uses when it comes to consistency, imo it's much more fun to make them up as i go. you get a lot more variety from piece to piece while also familiarizing yourself with the character's palette that way. usually i'll start by deciding on the overall mood/palette (cool/warm, de-saturated, neon, pastel, etc), filling in the background color, then picking the characters' colors based on that. like with this venti pic, i started with a purple background and based my colors around that purple so they all fit the specific look i was going for. i could maybe get a similar effect by starting with the normal colors and using filters, shading, layer modes, etc to get the funky colors, but it will be much harder/more work and doesn't get as drastic of an effect imo.
Tumblr media
on that note, don't be afraid to use shades/colors that may seem odd! you'd be surprised how many times i've used gray in place of blue, orange, purple..basically any color. in the above example, you can see just how different the colors ended up being from the original. after i decide on my palette + bg color, i'll just throw down the color i think will work and then (bc that first guess is usually wrong and meant only as a ballpark estimate) see if it needs to be warmer or cooler/darker or lighter/more or less saturated/etc and adjust accordingly. it's like mixing paint or tuning an instrument! it takes a little bit of practice, but after a while you start to get the hang of what colors will look like in which color palettes. white is usually the easiest to start with bc it will always just be tinted whatever color your palette is (like how the "white" in the above example is just a light purple).
this and the next point are more about shading but i include it as part of the coloring process: the easiest way i've learned to do shading is to darken the entire image/character/part you want to shade (usually with a solid color multiply layer) then add in the lighting either by erasing parts of the multiply layer or by using a separate layer set to overlay or glow dodge (or a similar lightening layer mode). it works a lot better than drawing the shadows imo because it kind of mimics how light works in real life; things are dark by default until you let light in and it hits what it can while leaving the rest still dark.
if you want to blend shadows, i usually still use the above method, but just blur certain areas of it and when i'm deciding which parts to blur (bc i don't just do so indiscriminately) i'll mentally sort all of the shadows into 2 categories:
shadows created by light being blocked by an object: like putting your hand in front of a flashlight. these shadows will retain their sharp edge, but can transition into the 2nd category if they are far enough from the obstruction, like how your hand's shadow will become blurrier the further you move it from the flashlight. the more distance between a light source and the surface it's projecting onto, the more chances for the light to scatter = softer edges
shadows created by light "rolling" off the surface: like the shadows on a ball or rounded surface. these will get blurred and i usually like to put a little bit of color along the blurred edge (a different and usually brighter/more saturated color than the rest of the shadows) just to add some life to the shadows.
here's an annotated version of this mikey pic with just the shadows so it's a lot easier to see :) sorry im bad at annotating..

aaaand this post has probably gotten way longer than you were hoping for so i'll cut it off here 😭 hope this has been at least somewhat useful, and good luck with your art!

can i just say that i absolutely adore your art! Your compositions, colour usage and the atmospheres you create for every single piece you make are so amazing! Every time you post something I drool over every single aspect of your drawings.
Also the way you use and implement your line-art or outlines in your drawings is so cool and effective! It's like you always know where to include or not include line-art or outlining, which also makes your compositions extra cool!
As someone who's always struggled with creating effective compositions and when to implement that sometimes "less is more" I think your art is so impressive! Is it difficult for you to create your compositions and when to include outlines or not?
I've had this sitting in my inbox for a couple weeks sorryyyy haha I wanted ti actually take my time to answer this but keep getting busy lol this is so nice to hear!!! I love hearing like,, specific things that people like about my art
I've recently decided I'm not going to finish the degree because... life, but I was an art direction major in an animation bachelors degree! I learnt a lot about compositing art there! But for the most part with everything else, I'm pretty much self taught!
I'm a slut for lighting and atmosphere in art so its what I focus on most! Its my favourite part of the drawing process! When I've got the sketch and colours down and then I can start building up the layers of shading and highlights and overlays! I add clipping layers ontop of the line art and add colours to the actual lineart where i think it needs it! Sometimes I'll just add a layer ontop of everything and just draw over things and render it further! I wish I could give you more of my thought process but there's reall not much of one, its just chasing how I feel and aiming for a Vibe(tm). Most of my rendered drawings have 70-100 layers, some of them are just,,, bullshit shading and adding other overlays or glow dodge layers.
For composition, I use a lot of references, some I took myself, most off of pinterest or stock image sites. They're my base and I'll photobash something together to get the vibe and then start the actual drawing. Other than that, not a lot of planning goes into it ahaha I tend to just wing it and figure it out as I go which is probably a bad method ahaha
Idk if this answered what you're asking cause I kind of just word vomited but I hope its something ahah
My inbox is always open if anyone ever wants to chat <3

1, 9, 25 for art asks?
1. Compare your first and last pieces from this year! Where do you think you improved?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh wow. Yeah, definitely got more confident in my style and pushed myself to finish more pieces. So many of my previous works just sit unfinished, but I finished SO Many this year I honestly struggle to believe it sometimes. Also became more confident in my ability to draw from memory! Wolffe was drawn 100% from memory, whereas the Mandos were all referenced in some way. And while my recall isn't great, I'm happy with where it is.
9. Explain the process behind one of your pieces, if you remember!
Putting this under a cut because it ended up getting quite long :')
Whoof, OK. Let's give this a shot! So this piece is one that isn't perfect by any means, but definitely had the most planning put into it!
Tumblr media
I knew exactly how I wanted it to look, but I knew it would be trickey to execute because of how tied to background elements it is, which I struggle to integrate with the main characters a lot. So I thumbnailed several variations on the pose and placement and ended up combining the results of two into the final piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously these look like uhhh shit, but I just wanted to rough out the basic elements.
Then I gathered some references of the Havoc Marauder's interior and this Black Series set of props!
Tumblr media
Then I basically traced over the traditional sketch, adjusting any wonky anatomy that I saw and tried to make it as readable as possible while maintaining a kinda sketchy look that I like.
Tumblr media
Then I generally like to have a looser approach to how I drew backgrounds so I basically freehanded the rest without line art, just kinda blocking in color and refining them until they look right. With this one however I did end up going over the panels with lines because of how geometric they are. I remember constantly checking references to make sure I was getting all the buttons, all the little details, all the right shapes. What was also fun to experiment with was how to make the buttons glow! I ended up going with an airbrush layer of colours with an Add (Glow) layer on top that I slightly motion blurred. I really like how it came out!
Tumblr media
I then colored in The Fellas. What's quite fun about Bad Batch armor is that it has a bit more texture to it than reg armor, so I gave the armor its own noise layer to emphasise that, as well as just generally scuffing it up.
Tumblr media
After that it was pretty much just messing around with blending layers and such to get the nice darks and glow effects in the ship. I did play around with giving each character their own glowing rim, but it ended up being more distracting than anything, so I just outlined the lineart in white where the highlights should be.
And that's it! I hope that was interesting.
Tumblr media
25. Did you have any art goals coming into the year? How far did you achieve them?
I did indeed have art goals this year! As with most years, my goal is to complete more pieces. Lineart, color, shading backgrounds, the whole lot. And this year it the first year I've really done it! Which I'm super happy about. Another goal was to do more non-fandom art, but between university work and the stuff I made for here, I didn't really have time! While I am happy with the pieces I made for university, I wish I had done more non-fandom art outside of it. But doing fandom art makes me happy, so I'm still glad I did it! Balancing I guess.
Thanks so much for the ask!

answer questions 1 to 25 >:D
LMAO OMG THATS ALL OF THE QUESTIONS OK HERE WE GOOO
1. Favorite drawing from this year
lol so i actually somehow forgot i never posted it on here and only posted it on twitter but there's this BeatNeku fanfic that I really like and i drew something from it, in one chapter Neku had a nightmare and Beat comforts him ;u; The colouring could have been done better but i'm happy with the pose and their expressions here
Tumblr media
when i'm done with this ask post i'll make a new separate post for this art and also link the fic for any beatneku enjoyers out there who have not read it yet
2. least favorite drawing from this year
some of the things i drew for the "draw every Neo character from memory" challenge were absolutely awful lmao, but i'm not going to count that, i'll also not count sketches that i never fully finished
so out of all the coloured arts i did this year, i think this Yew one is my least favourite, he was part of a series of 10 drawings i did and out of all of them, his pose is just the most boring and he also got stuck in a job outfit i just don't like as much as the others
Tumblr media
3. first drawing from this year
there's absolutely no way this one is actually the first, i'm SURE i must have doodled Byleth at least once in the Jan-Feb time period before Bravely Default 2 released, but i must not have saved any of them to my laptop, so here's a sketch of Seth in the Beastmaster job lol
Tumblr media
(in game he says "ya-haar!!" like a pirate a lot so i thought it'd be funny if he said "nya-haar" when wearing the cat hood lmao)
4. favorite character you've drawn
i love my boy Neku so much
5. favorite little detail in a drawing you did
the way i drew Seth's scarf here, for once i actually drew clothes folding in a believable way lol
Tumblr media
6. longest a drawing has taken to finish
dang i never actually keep track lol.. many hours
7. most popular drawing
the Byleth birthday art was a big hit on twitter
Tumblr media
8. underrated drawing you did
i really liked this Astrologian Tiz that i did, but it only ever got 7 notes, while the uncoloured sketch version has 26 lol
Tumblr media
this has happened with some of my other stuff too, i guess my sketches just look better than my coloured arts lmao
9.any new art mediums youve tried (or overall styles if you havent tried new mediums)
not sure if this really counts as trying a new style, but i've noticed that when i started drawing more twewy fanart i sometimes end up doing thicker lineart on my drawings lol
aside from that though i don't think i experimented much this year
10. favorite art medium
pencil and markers
11. artist(s) that influenced/inspired your art style
not sure about this one, i guess the general style of whatever fandom i'm in ends up influencing my style a bit when i start drawing the characters from it a lot
12. fandom youve drawn the most for
last year this answer would have been Fire Emblem, but for 2021 only the fandom i drew most is probably Bravely Default, though TWEWY is defo catching up lol
13. favorite fandom to make fanart of
Bravely and TWEWY, an answer that probably surprises absolutely no one lol
i do still like to draw Byleth Fremblem sometimes tho, even if not as often as i used to
14. how many drawings did you complete this year
28, if i counted correctly and didn't forget anything
15. any upcoming planned drawings
i really want to draw another mega soft cuddling BeatNeku kinda like the one i did in the first answer, after being stuck in Inverted Shinjuku alone for 3 years Neku is probably sO TOUCH STARVED HE NEEDS SO MANY HUGS AND I WILL MAKE SURE HE GETS THEM
16. favorite piece of art from someone else (if you have one)
THERE'S TOO MANY
17. favorite oc/sona drawing
i barely ever draw OC content but there was this ikea shark meme that i redrew with my oc Reiko
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18. any art events youve participated in
i only ended up drawing for 1 day but there was a BeatNeku Week event on twitter
19. any collabs youve done/would want to do
i'm too shy for collabs :'D
20. what do you think youve improved on the most over the past year
this year i've drawn better poses i think
21. what do you want to work on the most next
i want to work on expressions more, i think the way i draw faces is cute, but sometimes my drawings lack a certain amount of energy maybe?
22. what are you best at drawing/doing (ex: youre good at lineart, or drawings hands, etc.)
despite having just said i need to improve more on it, the head/face is what i draw best, everything below the neck can be a real struggle for me, which is why sometimes i'm only in the mood to draw busts lol
though i have also been told i'm good at drawing armour by some discord friends whenever i show them my Dragoon Seth stuff
23. favorite pose youve drawn
i might have twisted his spine a bit too much but i'm still really happy with how the pose looks on this one
Tumblr media
i really like this one too, probably the most dynamic pose i've drawn ever lol
Tumblr media
24. what do you like most about your art style
it's cute, there's a lot of things i want to improve with my art, but it being cute is one thing that does make me genuinely happy about the style i have
25. best advice youve recieved this year or something new you learned about art
sometimes i'll see a post that gives off a vibe of just not giving a fuck and i actually find those pretty inspirational lol
the ones like this or that are like "post sketches!! who tf cares if you don't finish everything!! post it anyway!!!" or i remember seeing one that was like "i may not be a great artist but i've got hands and a pencil and i WILL make that everyone else's problem" thats the kind of energy i want to have lmao
it can be really disappointing to not get the numbers you wanted on a piece you worked hard on but i try to remind myself in the end that as long as i had fun drawing something it was worth the effort even if it doesn't get much attention
