REDESIGNING MAGIK
Welcome to Limbo! Our group chose Illyana Rasputina, the marvelous Magik for this round! Introduced as the younger sister of Colossus, Magik joined the 80s New Mutants team as a young teen and has since flourished into an A-Lister in her own right. She's been a member of the Phoenix Five, Cyclops' renegade X-Men squad, the Krakoan New Mutants, and the 2022 X-Men team.
She has several inspiration points for artists and redesigners to pull from. She's most well-known for her all-black 2012 look but has also sported demonic and fantasy influences as someone connected to the hellish Limbo and her malevolent alter ego, the Darkchylde.
See what our enthusiastic and talented team of artists did this round, and make sure to follow them on social media for more fantastic art!
(The handles presented after artists names are their Twitter handles, but many use the same name on other platforms!)

"I went full speed ahead into medieval land and dressed Illyana in a full metal shiny armour, putting emphasis on her sword bearing arm with a biiiig spiky shoulder pad. Gave her a punk lesbian haircut while keeping her iconic bangs, because I think she should be allowed to be more of a punk lesbian. And I couldn't resist adding a touch of demon form with the horns. She's gloomy she's menacing she's spiky and shiny she's the girl of my dreams."
Giovanni Saroldi | @/RaulGiova
Tumblr media
"Just like matter, let’s give ‘Yana three states! Solid, liquid, gas? Kinda, not quite! From angelic to demonic, with her main form being the in-between totality of herself, where she can draw whichever power she needs.
It’s geometric, it’s chic, it’s retro-futuristic Terry Moore with the Horns of Galaxy The Prettiest Star meets Ludmilla from Bartok mid-transformation."
John Caden | @/johncaden64
Tumblr media
"I've always felt the Bachalo design was great, but could get very male-gazey.  I tried to make it more comfortable, while also keeping the same goth feel.  I do feel she needs to just go all-in goth, so let's shave her head, get some thick black mascara and commit to the bit! "
John Marsh | @/pastelrake

"What if Illyana had been a Russian figure skater?"
Joe Pryde | @/joeprydecosplay

"My inspiration for this design came from the idea of “what if Magik was an elder emo” complete with Kristen Stewart fem mullet, high waist buckled tights, and sleeveless crop top hoodie. I also wanted to pay homage to previous designs."

"I had but one simple thought: What if the Soul Sword was a rapier? And thus fencing Magik was born. I wanted the geometric shapes of the dark bodysuit to contrast with the curves of the golden armor, whilst still adding a little magic and mystery with her cloak and mask. "
Dale Yaddow | @/DaleYaddow

Version 1 "The Savage Magik". Having been stripped of her magical knowledge, Illyana Rasputin hunts down various enchanted artifacts to replace what she's lost. Becoming desperate she seems to be willing to steal and sometimes kill to get these talismans. Among these are the Soul Dagger of Pixie, the medallion of Daimon Hellstrom, Holy bands from "Heven" and a cursed skull from an alternate version of Lockheed.
Version 2 "Mistress Magik" This is an older more seductive Magik that's been corrupted by the influence of Selene and embraced her sensuality, opening up a whole new avenue of mystical arts that she hadn't dared explore before. She now uses her SoulSword to capture the essences of her foes and much like Selene feeds on them keeping her young and vital.
Version 3 "Magik, Queen of Hell" Many questioned the logic of Magik giving Limbo to Madelyne Prior but the end game has been revealed. Illyana allowed Madelyne to tether her magic to Limbo, knowing eventually "Maddie" would get greedy and begin bringing more power to that dimension. With a carefully hidden clause in the Limbo transference spell Magik takes back Limbo and all the power within it and successfully overthrows all the Hell Lords, unifying the many dreaded dimensions under one fearsome rule, hers.
Anthony Ruiz | @/thwwipstickers
Tumblr media
"Almost as soon as Magik was decided on for this design challenges I had two ideas strike me simultaneously ... The first of those ideas was the image of Illyana as a 90's Riot(ish) on the cover of a Magazine. I wanted to give her an edgy grungy vibe but still pay homage to her Demonic nature.
Shortly after Finishing my first Design I just knew I had to make my second idea come to life.
What if Illyana was an Anime Mech Pilot and Wore a Plugsuit... thats it... thats the idea. I really wanted to strike the Balance between Anime Plugsuit but still being noticeably Magik and X-men.
I kept the Bright yellow Color scheme with hints of black and red and chose to interpret her Armored arm into a Mechanized oversize cybernetic arm that helps fuel her Plasma Powered Soul sword that springs forth from her Gauntlet."
Isaiah Cox | @/isaiahbeenlost
Tumblr media
"When designing my Magik look, I wanted to expand on ideas I had when drawing her a couple years ago by keeping her look sleek, yet scary stylish! So, I referenced a lot of Castlevania and Yoshiaki Kawajiri designs to get that cool anime look for her down! I plucked some fashion inspirations for the costume from places like: Mugler, Alexander McQueen, LaQuan Smith, JRPG rogues and medieval accessories! And for her new soul sword, I decided to give her an Odachi because since she already lived her Cloud Strife fantasy starting from the Bendis-era, I thought it was time for her to live her Sephiroth moment with this giant Japanese sword!"
David J Hughes | @/0ddeity
Tumblr media
"I think with Magik I started out pretty traditional for her. Then I got to thinking our Russian Queen deserves a Mugler-esque fit. I wanted to go down the knight or warrior route, but then I thought ‘What If’ this was an AU Illyana raised by Patch and she got all of Logan’s training rather than Kitty and Jubilee, or, alongside them. So, bham, Oni-demon menpo mask and samurai elements on top of the Mugler flair."
Fleshmonk | @/fleshmonk
Tumblr media
"Went through a bunch of design iterations, but settled on this cool plasticky vinyl plugsuit like version of Magik. I gave her a bob to mature her a bit and to move her towards a new silhouette."
Joshua Bruckner | @/joshingtonbear
Tumblr media
"I took a bit from Magik's more armored designs, which I've always liked the most, and her goth jock aesthetic, and blended them. I rejected the Bachalo booty shorts in favor of a skirt, which gives her a bit of a 'cheerleader from hell' look."
Seye Sanyaolu | @/seye_art
Tumblr media
"My intention for this redesign was Magik in a very dystopian future and so I imagined a 3/4 darkchylde Illyana that is in control of her self and powers (although almost lost it). In this future, most of the X-Men are gone and Illyana keeps a worn and frayed X-jacket on for the nostalgia :’)"

Only for him - Gale x GN!Reader
Pairing: Gale x GN!Reader Word Count: ~ 530 Warnings/Tags: act 2 spoilers, angst, hurt, talk of death and blood, eventually happyish?, no use of y/n, some in game dialogue Setting: Act 2, Ilithid Colony under Moonrise Towers
archiveofourown: here
masterlist: here
I've been flipping back in forth between my fics, while also finishing up my most recent playthrough of my fighter Tav x Gale romance save. And I couldn't help but want to make more of an angsty/hurt version of the conversation you have with him when you convince Gale to not blow himself the eff up in Moonrise Towers.
For the purposes of this tiny little ficlit, Tav/Reader is a melee tank (fighter, paladin, etc.) Folk Hero who has been through the ringer, lost many people and is just very... very tired. And has been waiting to get their own happy ending for so long that they thought it would never happen.
Anyways, I have enough on my plate with my two fics so I'm not committing to anything but I really enjoyed fleshing out this little headcannon dream I had while playing my newest playthrough. And I think Gale deserves all the love too! Thank you for reading, and if you liked it let a girl know!

"This is it. I must do as Mystra commands." Gale took a steadying breath, his brown eyes looking anywhere but you. He had them focused ahead, on the monstrosity that was the so-called Absolute.
His leather boot took one step forward, but his movement halted as you stepped in front of him. Your heart was aching, a real physical pain cracking through it. "Gale, you cannot do this. Please, don't do this." You begged, your armored hand wrapped around his bound forearm.
You watched his throat bob as he swallowed thickly, "What choice do I have? More than just a goddess counts on my courage: whole worlds hang in the balance." His dark eyes looked at you sadly, anguish etching the features of his face as his wrist turned so he could hold back onto you. His fingers trembling like it would be his last touch.
Your lips quivered as you stepped closer to him. Even in this dank, evil abyss under the Tower you breathed in his familiar, warm scent. "I have spent my entire life fighting and bleeding. All I have known is death. I have stared it down on my knees, shattered and broken - even if it never came to take me, it took everyone else. And I was… so tired, so ready to give up." Tears were welling in your eyes, emotion crawling up your throat until your words choked out of you. "But then I met you. And all of it, every screaming muscle as I swung my blade, every aching bone as I took another hit, every drop of blood, every scream and tear shed... all of it was worth it. Because it led to you."
Tears were streaming down both of your cheeks now, leaving lines of clean skin as it cut through the dust and dirt and blood that stained your face. "Please, Gale - my love. Don't do this. We have time. We can have time." You grabbed either side of his face, his brown eyes softening as you tipped your forehead onto his. Your voice was a whisper, "I choose you, Gale. Not the wizard, not the sacrifice or Goddess' pawn. The man I love. Choose me back. The one who loves you. We can find another way together. I love you."
"I love you too. Much more than myself. More even than Mystra. Whether I condemn this world or not: I choose you." He nodded, his forehead still pressed tightly to yours as he pressed his lips softly to yours.
It was not the time nor place for such gentle acts of love. Not with an abomination around the corner, not with an undying man waiting to unleash his evil machinations on the world so close by. But you could not help yourself, not when it came to Gale. You pressed your lips harder to his for just a moment longer, memorizing the feeling and taste of him before you pulled away.
The pair of you nodded at each other breathlessly, eyes shifting with determination.
You would draw your sword and hold up your shield again. You would fight another day. Fight for another lifetime. You would stare down and ward off death once again. If only for him. Only for him.

Happy 2000-- er... 2400 followers! I suppose this is what I get for overestimating how long it would take me to do two full bodies and 14 busts which I wound up cropping anyway lol.
Bonus commentary under the cut!
Link to the version with no commentary (x)
So first off, this was a considerable challenge for me since I don't normally draw in an anime style, and I think that shows. There were a lot of wonky proportions that I ended up having to go back and sort of fix in post. Irida, Rei, and Akari were especially bad-- my own sister told me that Rei looked like "a cross between a Victorian orphan and a frog". I decided to redraw all three of them, but since I drew them on a smaller canvas, I think it messed with the resolution a little when I shrank them down. I'm not sure anyone would notice if they weren't looking for it, but I've been staring at this for so long that I can't unsee it.
Next was the brilliant decision to put Emmet, Elesa, and Drayden on a light background. They initially faded right in, so I went back over some of the outlines to make them more readable; I had also tried putting the whole Unova set on a darker background, but found that it drew too much attention and unbalanced the piece.
On to the good things!
I adore how Melli and Zisu turned out. I don't know what it was, but my art game was on point that day.
I also had a lot of fun trying out different motifs. I knew from the outset that I wanted to play around with the duality of black/white, the duality of past/future, and the idea of making the whole disk resemble a PokéBall. The center design had me stumped for a while; I had initially used screenshots of the Highlands and Gear Station as placeholders during my planning stage, but around halfway through I decided that would be too busy and changed it to a simple railway track design instead. Then I decided I didn't like that either, and at the last minute I went back to a simplified version of my original concept. I think the stylized Coronet mountain range and subway train work nicely.
Other trivia:
During my planning phase, I used everyone's official art as placeholders-- except for Zisu, who for some reason I couldn't find any for. I used a screenshot for her placeholder, and referenced her TCG card for the final drawing.
Emmet being the only character drawn from a head on angle was deliberate. I wanted to subtly highlight his importance while still being able to place a key Pokémon in the center of both groups.
I drew all of my initial sketches on paper, lined and colored in Clip Studio, and compiled/edited everything in GIMP. I am a chaos gremlin and I will not apologize.
The reason I settled on a Station of Awakening as a follower celebration is threefold: The first is that I was hanging out with some good friends, and we wound up playing Melody of Memory. I forget exactly how it came up, but it was definitely a joke at the time as I do recall saying that it would take me forever... which it did, lol. The second reason is that I later realized that my first post on the blog (after the original "Ingo shouldn't be in old timey Hisui" (x) post) was Kingdom Hearts themed (x). The circle of stupidity is complete! And finally, I'm old enough to remember when making one of these for your blorbo was The Big Fandom Thing ™ that everyone did, and I wanted to indulge in a bit of nostalgia.

For the story ideas folder "You Drew Stars Around My Scars" have definitely caught my eye!
Also hope you are doing good, Elm!
First of all, Crys, hiiiiiii! I'm doing okay! I hope you're well! ✨ Second, I just want to thank you for asking about "You Drew Stars Around My Scars" and to apologize for the person I'm about to become.
Are you ready for it?
"You Drew Stars Around My Scars" is a The Elder Scrolls V/Baldur's Gate 3 crossover that will likely never see the light of day for several factors, such as the number of WIPs I have, my original novel, school, and, oh, the fact that I've never played BG3 My MacBook Air cannot handle those demands. DESPITE THE EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES!, I just think the game is neat and have been sucked into it in part by Astarion. Mostly Astarion . . . okay, entirely.
Background information: Ever since I started writing Keeping Count, I knew Bishop was lifted from Neverwinter Nights and that it was a D&D-based game. And I guess that's why someone mentioned Astarion as a palette cleanser to me a few months ago, shared universe and all. And my initial perception of the character was so cool that I vaguely entertained an alternative Keeping Count where Astarion shows up, seduces Leara from Bishop, and probably sexy stabs Bishop or something. And then I didn't really think about it again. For months.
Then my brain went back to it and Astarion and BG3 and I cried a bit when I realized that my laptop couldn't play the game. I'm fine. And you know what? @cosmermaid is right: Leara deserves a better companion than freaking Bishop. Also please forgive my minimal BG3/D&D knowledge, 95% of which I've absorbed since like last Monday ish.
SO! "You Drew Stars Around My Scars" features Leara getting picked up by the Mind Flayer ship post-Sovngarde and taken via dimensional travel to Faerûn where, following the crash, she joins the usual party on a quest to get rid of the parasites. This Leara is very specifically taken after the planned Chapter 15 of Keeping Count for Reasons. Can Leara use magic in Faerûn since she's not able to draw it from Aetherius? No idea. Can she Dragon Shout? Also no idea. Transdimensional magic mechanics are weird. Regardless, Leara probably mentions something about being Dragonborn and gets weird and confused looks because her definition of Dragonborn is totally different from that in the Forgotten Realms. Linearly, I have no idea what would happen, but overall, Leara and Astarion both suffer trauma from following people who hurt them and they have complicated relationships with sex. They could have what could be a very cathartic relationship. Or I think so, anyway. Also, I kinda want to know if vampires react differently to the Dragonblood.
Symbolism in the story could heavily involve stars and light. Leara means "Light of the Sea" while Astarion means "Little Star". Leara is dependent on the stars for her magic but she's lost them, while Astarion wants to walk in the light even after the parasite is gone. There's no balance and it has to be found. They're both so cold and have lived in the shadows for a long time. There are dark versions of themselves they don't want to be anymore.
There's the possibility that, given her background in the Blades and Dominion, Leara might see through Astarion's mask in Act I. But she'd end up helping Astarion (and probably not giving on that she's on to him until later) because she's a bleeding heart. Two other very important things about this underwhelming but brain-rotting story: First, Astarion wouldn't ascend. We would need a Leara Disapproves sticker because she would not be for Astarion doing that. The second thing is, well, since motherhood is an extremely important part of Leara's character, I did pick out a name for a possible child. If Leara and Astarion had a daughter, her name would be Ilmarien, derived from Quenya, Ilmarë, meaning “starlight”.
Because after all this time, Tolkien elves still make the most sense to me.

hardcore burnout
This came up randomly in a conversation with a friend and I realize now it's probably safe to talk about it publicly.
I had never really known what "burnout" felt like until 2019 when it happened to me. Unfortunately, there's not really a clean, happy ending because I'm still not sure I've actually recovered from it by this point.
I was doing a combination of 7th Beat Games work [where I currently work] while also trying to do freelance at the same time and the freelance was what did me in.
For years I had been doing commissions and freelance work for various Youtubers. Depending on the Youtuber, it was sometimes really fun and fulfilling! Other times it was drudgery.
The final straw was that I animated, like, a 9-minute Fortnite cartoon for this guy. Really crunched on the deadline, really rushed it. I think at some point he deleted it off his channel for underperforming or something, and he never sent me the final version, so I don't even have the cartoon.
After this, I was completely burnt out. On animating, on drawing, on everything.
I couldn't stand to draw anymore. Couldn't hold the pen, couldn't sit in front of my computer and make anything. I've barely animated since. It just completely drained all of the fun for me. All I wanted to do was lay around, and not think about art anymore. Trying to draw felt like a mental version of nausea, like trying to force a fork full of food into my mouth.
The love that I had for art from before 2019 never really came back in full force. It's still really hard for me to draw, or animate, or focus. I'm extremely grateful to everyone who has bought our games at 7BG as it has allowed me to continue this career. I haven't been able to figure out how to reignite the spark or get my old motivation back in the years since. Not sure if I'll have to try to "pivot career path" at some point, or go back to school or something.
I've tried drawing a series of autobio comics discussing my experience with burnout as a hope of warning other artists on social media about what it is like but...y'know...burnt out on drawing before I finished them. Lol.
To be clear, not really bitter about that specific Youtuber, it was just bound to happen because I was being careless. From what I've heard through the grapevine about him, his company kind of fell to shambles in the years since due to mismanagement. Lots of start-and-stop projects that never took off. I guess we have that in common now.

the fun section of the writer's ask game
21. Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?
MY OCS ATM. AND THE VERSIONS OF EVERYONE FOR MY STAR TREK AU. I put a lot of effort into them and making them feel real and understandable within their story!
Harland is super fun to write cause it's a chance to explore a world and characters I love while being respectful of the canon of the game, but seeing what aspects I can go further into with Harland. And all the snippets of Abe and Orc I've started writing is just AUGHHH THEY'RE COMING ALIVE!!!!
22. Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?
Magland... Abe and Orc...... There's some I want to write, like Leon x Ada or Hylink (again.... Sigh....) that I think I'll have fun with. I just like writing pairings that have interesting dynamics or bounce off each other in silly ways
23. Favourite author
Ahhh man. It's hard to say cause I feel like I haven't read anything consistently enough lately to say for sure. I can say when I was younger I really loved CS Lewis and as a teen I really enjoyed what little I'd read by Niel Shusterman, and maybe throw in Adachitoka for good measure
24. Favourite genre to write and read
SCI-FI / THRILLER ALL THE WAYYYYY BABBBEEEYYY
I like other stuff like fantasy and drama and whatever too ofc but like. NOTHING QUITE SCRATCHES THE ITCH LIKE THESE TWO, ESP IF THEY'RE A PAIR.
Sci-fi is soooo broad and fun, it's interesting when it's low concept or high concept and I like that it's so easy to inject philosophical dilemmas into the bones of the story and leave you thinking, and I like how interesting it is when you can draw parallels to current life (it's especially interesting seeing retro future sorta stories, both the fun aesthetics of 90s shit but also just seeing what people thought the scientific advances could be the further back you go, and seeing things that used to be sci-fi become just sci)
AND THRILLERRRRS.... I find them more interesting and scary than horror, though I've often been mistaken for a horror head even tho I feel like I don't watch horror that much... (Unless it's overlapped with thriller I guess lol) Idk I just find that the kind of stories you can tell when you drag out the tension and let the scares settle in to the atmosphere instead of demanding attention front and centre affect me more. I like when there's some kind of conspiracy or danger to work around and it gets more horrific with worse implications the further you claw into it. I want the fear to linger in my mind instead of only speaking to my body (think like how a jump scare isn't really scary other than startling you, vs something that actually unnerves you and gets worse the more you think about it)
I guess all that to say. I like thinking about things and want the story to haunt me with everything it's got. I want to still be thinking about it years later cause there was something in there that lingered....
25. Favourite part of writing
Already answered here
26. Favourite writing program
Libre, I guess? There's certain things I miss from Microsoft word/google docs but fuck them LMAO 🖕🖕🖕 I just wanna be able to write easily and have basic formatting options, ya feel. Libre does the job so I use libre
27. Favourite line/scene
Of my own writing?? I feel like I haven't written them all yet..
Here's a Wip of a scene I really love from much later in harlands story that I really love:
"Well aren't you just a bundle of contradiction." Flea mused.
"Pardon?" Harland asked.
Flea sauntered up to Harland, circling around him as he spoke.
"A friend to both sides of the war." He swatted Harlands hair from his shoulder, watching it fall as he avoided eye contact. "A pacifist whose work has made weapons."
Harland opened his mouth to defend himself, but flea dragged his finger across his chest. Harland couldn't help but get distracted as the general's nail tugged at his collar.
"I don't make weapons." He said, unable to hide the slight waver in his voice.
Flea pouted at him condescendingly. "You may not make them, but would they exist without you?"
Harland clenched his jaw.
"Even when you fight-"
"I don't fight." Harland interrupted.
"EVEN WHEN YOU FIGHT," Flea continued, "you are offensively defensive."
Flea smiled, enjoying Harland struggling to keep himself composed. He stood in front of him, tracing his jawline. "What a contradictory mess of a man…”
28. Favourite side character
Ummmm. Every single one. Idk. Too hard to pick from media but I can tell you that I really like the kitty cat baker lady, shy cow girl and orc's sister from Abe and Orc. And obviously, my most favourite side character from their story is the Penis Wizard
29. Favourite villain
MAGUS BABBBEEEYYY!!!!!!!!!! ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!!!!!!! IHYRYGJPOGJOJGLVJB I NEED TO WRITE STUFF ABOUT HOW INTERESTING HE IS SOMEDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
30. Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet
Oh man there's so much. I will say it's my screenplay, Misled Millionaire, that was an integral part to making me wanna study film. I've planned so much without it feeling ready and I knew I needed to learn more to do the idea justice, and I still have hand written notes from 2019 that I kept, and even found the original quick note I wrote in my phone all the way back when I just had it as a silly little idea:
Reclusive millionaire searching for new life purpose, unlikely friendship with a fake psychic.
The story has changed quite a bit, but the gist of it is that a younger entrepreneur type is feeling lost and lacking despite ticking off so many boxes that should mean he's successful and happy. While he tries to find himself, he grows dependant on his new friendship with a little old lady who gives him fortunes, until one day he can't find her when he really needs her. When I've made progress on other stories, I'll write the screenplay and hopefully direct it myself! So no stealing my ideas!!
Send me some writing asks

Horus Rising Part 1: The Deceived
This post contains spoilers for the The Deceived, the first part (and approximately the first half) of Horus Rising by Dan Abnett, first published as a novel on (as nearly as I can tell) April 6th, 2006. This is all material I've read years ago, so I can't provide fresh eyes on it. However, that also means I've been thinking about it for a while.
I considered doing a plot summary but I'm not going to; it was taking too long to type. So. It's immediately obvious what Abnett is doing here with the dramatic irony -- the first line of the book is "I was there when Horus slew the Emperor" and the book remarks of the Justaerin lead by Ezekyle Abaddon that they seem to be of a different, black Legion, etc. -- but I have to remember that this was published in April 2006, during Warhammer 40k 4th Edition. The Horus Heresy wouldn't be its own game until October 2012, six and a half years later. He is laying it on thick because doing a pseudo-historical book series where the whole point is you know where things will end up and the drama and tension stem from how it'll get there still feels novel; it doesn't yet feel assumed.
I do want to call to attention one specific passage, though, early in the book, that is significant to me:
"Except that for all its martial technologies, the enemy lacked one essential quality, and that quality was locked within each and every case of Mark IV power armour: the genetically enhanced flesh and blood of the Imperial Astartes. Modified, refined, post-human, the Astartes were superior to anything they had met or would ever meet."
Around the same time I first read this book I also read Guy Haley's Dark Imperium, the first version before the rewrite to bring it into line with the revised 9th edition 40k timeline. There is a similar passage early in the first edition of that book introducing Primaris Space Marines, which says clearly that the first generation Space Marines are hopelessly outclassed and made obsolete by the Primaris. Reading those two passages in close proximity made it viscerally clear that Black Library, GW's publishing arm, is ultimately all just ads for whatever miniatures they're trying to sell at the moment. This is something I'd been aware of before then, but the juxtaposition of those two passages really drove it home. (The Dark Imperium rewrite removed that passage in favor of something that says there's effectively no difference between Firstborn and Primaris anymore.)
Anyway, I'd also like to draw attention to the way Loken's squad seems to have a dedicated plasma gunner; since Heresy isn't its own game yet, Dan Abnett seems to be writing the Luna Wolves as fighting with M.41-era tactical squads. Though given that Loken is First Captain of the Tenth, you could read that as just being a command squad thing. The book also talks about Devastator Squads instead of heavy support. This isn't important but it's kind of funny, in an "Oh, of course they hadn't figured that out yet" way.
I think the book handles reasonably well that the Imperium of Man are implicitly villainous, while stepping back a bit from fully addressing it. The setup is that the 63rd expeditionary fleet arrives at 63-19 to discover a flourishing human civilization and send a peace envoy to negotiate Compliance, who the emperor of the planet has executed out of turn for saying something offensive. The fleet then sends a force of Space Marines to attack the planetary capital and decapitate the civilization's government. The locals bring up the issue of "Why couldn't you just leave us alone?" but, like, dudes you killed their diplomatic envoy out of hand; what did you think would happen? On the other hand, it's made clear that leaving them alone really wasn't an option -- even if the locals hadn't executed the visiting diplomat and had merely politely requested that the fleet leave, the options were always surrender or war, and this is being presented as A Problem… but the execution of the envoy provides moral justification of the invasion so the audience isn't forced to confront the Imperium being fully villainous right away.
Something I didn't notice when I read this the first time, but which stands out now, is that this part of the book is literally called The Deceived. I think my eyes just skimmed over that title page years ago. The subject of this part of the book is the way everyone relates to Horus, a character who does not get a point-of-view section and who's clearly flattering everyone around him at all times; everyone loves him because he seems to love and value everyone. One of the common complaints about False Gods and definitely one I felt when reading it was that it has Horus slide into treachery too quickly, but in light of specifically this section's title, I think that maybe makes me like what I remember of False Gods more? Horus is already deceiving everyone. One influence on me here is Arbiter Ian's videos where he makes the argument that the Heresy couldn't have worked if the Warmaster hadn't been at least planning for something like it as a possibility for long before the events of this book -- he was clearly moving people and materiel around for a scenario like this for decades. On my first read I think I assumed the book was being coy about it but was leaning towards Horus still being loyal at this time so his treachery would be more tragic later; on my second read, it seems like Horus is already a secret traitor and is playing everyone, which might make False Gods less jarring… but I do think makes this one somewhat less interesting. I would much rather read a book about a mostly-loyal Horus turning traitor than an already-traitor Horus setting his plan in motion. The book is trying to eat its cake and have it, too.
(I said some mean things about Horus Heresy YouTube Lore Explainers earlier, but Arbiter Ian's great, and his historiographic approach to Warhammer fiction is consistently interesting.)
I do not like the way Samus and warp daemons and Space Marine possession are handled, I think for two reasons, one substantial and one petty.
Here's the petty reason: Samus has a series of catchphrases he whispers in peoples' ears before possessing someone and murdering their friends, and some of those catchphrases are effective while others are fuckin' weaksauce. "Look out! Samus is here" is not a scary catch phrase for a daemon. "Samus will gnaw on your bones" is also pretty blunt. "Samus is the man beside you" is great understated horror, but the way his creepy whisper is structured, it starts strong and gets weaker and ends on its weakest point. It really, really diffuses the tension Abnett is trying to set up.
Here's the substantial reason: If you're going to do a book series where one of the plot points is Space Marines and Imperial civilians raised in the radical atheism of the Imperial Truth, totally convinced there's no such thing as gods or spirits or supernatural forces, first encountering daemons and warp possession and having their view of the universe shattered, it is no good to set it when someone higher up can immediately show up and go "Oh yeah we totally know about those already but it's a secret; don't tell anyone daemons are real, also, this is just like those other times you fought possessed people who just happened not to be space marines, remember?" And granted it's Horus who provides that explanation but it's too obvious -- if he's jerking Loken around, he should have been able to present an alternate take on things that both left Loken more reassured while leaving the audience wondering whether Horus knows more than he's saying or not, instead of just immediately telling the truth in a way that reassures us the Astartes aren't actually facing an outside context problem, don't worry, we've totes got context for this. Like, the book sets up a really interesting source of drama and immediately diffuses it, like Samus's whispered chat in macrocosm. And that kinda relates to what I said above about Horus already being a secret traitor: This is the wrong point in the Heresy to start the Heresy novel series. A better version of this story would have had Samus's possession of Xayver Jubal be a more jarring, less explicable event, with Samus himself being creepier, and set Horus himself earlier along on his development towards treason.
That said, the Horus Heresy wasn't originally planned to be a 64-volume series. GW originally greenlit three books: Horus Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy in Flames. In light of that it's clear why they jumped right into Horus's, uh, heresy. But the book is shooting for two different goals and falling just short of each.
(There's also the arguable issue that it's hard for warp fuckery to be a truly outside-context problem for the Astartes, given how much warp fuckery they had to face up against during the Unification Wars, but you could even use that -- if the Unification Wars were two hundred plus years ago and knowledge of warp fuckery had been suppressed in the name of the Imperial Truth, then ancient stories of Astartes fighting things like this coming up in the wake of Samus's massacre could be a way to establish the horror of the situation. Later on the book goes into the warrior lodges, secret societies where Space Marines are encourated to speak freely to each other outside the boundaries of rank and regulation -- the book could have had old stories of daemonic possession come out there, while being suppressed outside of the lodge meetings.)
Anyway those are my thoughts on Horus Rising Part 1: The Deceived. Subsequent entries to this blog will probably be shorter than this. This took a long time to compose.

Here's a new series of colored in digital doodles.
I'm calling them White Sheets (mostly because it's just a white background and nothing more, it's gonna be a series of drawings I'll be drawing and posting, also to organize in the tags and such).
I will also talk about the drawings. It's because a lot of these will be relating to my multifandom story but it could also be random drawings of some random characters I felt like drawing so idk.
I might also post 5 pages at a time (like what I did with my first batch which was just my kin list, that could be the pilot of this series idk).
So here we go.
Tumblr media
Toriel comforting Orel because the thought of his mother not giving him motherly love ached my heart so I drew this (this could happen in the multifandom story).
Also Bluey because she's one of my favorites to draw recently. I've realized (while posting this) that I've drawn her and her sister a lot. Mostly her tho. Idk the show made her animation and design satisfying to watch and look at.
Tumblr media
I wanted to display the brotherly love that Timmy and Poof had (and I love how the characters hug each other in the show so that's also why I drew this).
And I also wanted to see my recent depiction of Moomintroll. He looks alright I hope. Idk I guess he's one of my favorites to draw as well. I draw him when I can't think of any other characters to draw kinda like Popee.
Tumblr media
I couldn't help but draw Murdoc for once. It has been a while since I last doodled him and I wanted to draw him digitally. But I was mostly drawing him because of @imtryingmybestbutimscared . So thanks for the inspiration mate! 👍✨
I've also wanted to see my version of Warren too. Idk if I should like or dislike him. He was.. fine until he got all up on Yellow's business. But he has a worm in his brain (I guess) so who knows with this guy.
Tumblr media
Baldi because I originally wanted to draw a different character from what I usually draw, but then after a while from drawing him and listening to fan songs of the game I became a fan of it again so.. yeah I'll probably draw more characters from the game or something idk.
Bingo and Yellow Guy are here too because I've always thought of them as friends in my multifandom story mostly).
Tumblr media
Nicky because I like him and I wanted to see my version of him in my recent art style I guess (and I'm pretty sure that drawing Yellow Guy keeps making me want to draw him as well, maybe other puppet characters too but mostly Nicky).
And that's me and Ezekiel. I don't usually do self inserts (especially draw them digitally and post them) but it's also for the multifandom story (yes I even get sucked into it). Me and Ezekiel are best friends in this story btw (yeah I know it's "cringe" to some but don't at me ok?).
Edit: I almost forgot to mention that I'm wearing my comfort hoodie in this.
Sorry if you didn't want to read all of this.
Thank you so much if you did read it! 👍💖✨

Last-minute panics to do a task is real; it's a constant habit of mine and something you should, on a general note, never, ever, ever, EVER do.
I am, of course, talking about buying up any of the 3DS games I wanted before the eshop closes (as of this writing, tomorrow.) So the last two or so weeks have been a mad dash as I tried to fill my l'il handheld with whatever game that piques my interest. I can only hope I'll enjoy them!
So in fashionable alphabetical order, they are... under the "Keep Reading."
Tumblr media
Attack of the Friday Monster! A Tokyo Tale: Just the sound of exploring everyday mundane life in a small-time quiet, rural Japanese town was enough to draw me in. The Kaiju battles that happens every Friday was just incidental.
Tumblr media
BoxBoxBoy/Bye-Bye Box Boy: I already owned the first one and though I never finished it, I didn't feel particularly guilty about it. The whole series is one of those pick-up-and-play-for-a-few-minutes kind of puzzlers, so it'll still be there waiting for me whenever I feel the urge to return to its monochromatic world. I'm just relieved I don't love Box Boy that much to invest in the far-too-expensive Japanese exclusive amiibo.
Tumblr media
Bravely Default: "You gotta play Bravely Default!" "If you like Final Fantasy, play Bravely Default!" "Hey! When are you gonna play Bravely Default?" "Are you gonna get Bravely Default?" "YOU GOTTA PLAY BRAVELY DEFAULT!" Jesus Christ, alright already! I got goddang Bravely Default! I swear, this had better be the JRPG equivalent of ambrosia. (Exaggerated joking aside, I do love JRPGs and am always on the lookout for any intriguing potentials from its massive library.)\
Tumblr media
Crashmo: I mean, I already got Pushmo. I did pick up Stretchmo, but I'm not going to waste more money buying the packs that come with it. These are enough and like the Box Boy series, they're games that'll do on a whim.
Tumblr media
Dillon's Rolling Western: Honestly, I don't care about tower defense games and even though this is one of the rare, new Nintendo IP (well, "new", this game came out a decade ago, which says a lot about Nintendo's reliance on tried-and-true franchises nowadays), I don't particular find the artwork or setting (I can take or leave westerns) appealing. I guess I'm getting it since it's a digital-only game and I'm not confident I'll see any of these ported or remastered to newer consoles anytime soon. Who knows, maybe I'll dig it. I'm also kind of kicking myself, because when I purchased Dillon, I thought I got the first game. What I accidentally bought was its sequel (The Last Ranger), and me being a stickler to try and play the very first game whenever possible, double dipped to get Game 1. So I guess I have two Dillon games. I guess. :/
Tumblr media
Dragon Quest VIII: I have no excuse for this one. I have literally played the PS2 demo before it first came out almost twenty damn years ago, impressed as hell, and dead set on buying a copy when it came out. Then I got lazy. Then they announced the 3DS version and I was dead set on getting that. Then I got lazy. And now, both physical copies of the game went soaring up in price. Only now have I finally moved my ass and fulfilled a promise to my nineteen-year-old self to get this goddamn game. I've only played the DQ Builders series, so this will be my first mainstream DQ game... unless I get to DQ11 first, which I got for my Switch a while back. In any case, I couldn't pass up on entry number 8, the one that people cite as "one of the best in the series." Which... well, I can't compare since I'm both Dragon and Questless, but I am looking forward to a fun role-playing experience.
Tumblr media
Ever Oasis: My criteria for getting most of these games were, "Will it be difficult to buy on ebay that it's just better to get the cheaper digital version because no one has heard about this hidden gem?" Hence Ever Oasis.
Tumblr media
Fantasy Life: Ditto this, too. I've been told Fantasy Life and the one before, Ever Oasis, are JRPGs with farm/town management and I'm moth to a flame for both genres, but even more so when combined.
Tumblr media
Kid Icarus: Uprising: Generally, I try to play at least one major Nintendo franchise unless I reaaaaaaaally don't care for its aesthetic or genre (Yeah, I'm good, F-Zero.) The bar is admittedly low for Kid Icarus since prior to the 3DS game, the series only had two games from nearly thirty years ago and I just do not have the time or patience nowadays to play a lot of 80s-era games. I'm fine if my only Kid Icarus exposure is the new version that comes with a hat.
Tumblr media
Picross 3D Round 2/Pokemon Picross: My other criteria is to find the digital-only 3DS exclusive that may or may not ever come out in other consoles, such as the Picross series. I didn't buy all of them because there's like twenty dang versions. I picked up Pokemon Picross because it's free and Picross 3D because it looks neat and different from the 98% 2D versions out there. I fucking love Picross.
Tumblr media
Pocket Card Jockey: I wasn't going to get this game because it supposedly came out for phones, but I couldn't find the damn thing in my android's store. So I just got it on the 3DS. I like Solitaire. And it was seven dollars. *shrugs*
Tumblr media
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology: It's a JRPG that uses time travel as its gameplay gimmick, 'nuff said. I should play Chrono Trigger again.
Tumblr media
Rhythm Heaven Megamix: I've never played a Rhythm Heaven game before, but I've been told if I didn't buy at least one, Rhythm Heaven will personally come into my apartment and break my kneecaps.
Tumblr media
Rhythm Thief: The Emperor's Treasure: I've heard the game has some issues, but it's a Lovable Rogue thief wearing a sharp as fuck suit wrapped up in a theater's kid rhythm game. It was a thousand times designed for me and my aesthetic.
Tumblr media
Rusty's Real Deal Baseball: Honestly, I think I just want it for the novelty than anything else. I'm aware this game will be totally useless come the 27th, but I don't wanna buy its micro-transcation-before-micro-transcation-were-a-thing mini-games, so I guess it'll remain forever in my 3DS as the little oddball that it is. I'm alright with that.
Tumblr media
Yo-Kai Watch: Boy, I'm gonna really regret it if I only bought the first game in the series, end up liking it so much, and then crying because the physical copies of its sequels are currently forty billion dollars on ebay. I got to admit, this carries some serious Dubbed-By-4kids energy, which either means it's gonna be annoying or charmingly cheesy. But also, I kind of bought it because the game's art style got me nostalgic for 90s-era anime. It certainly looks fun for that alone.
I also got Demos for Chibi-Robo: Photo Finder (just to experience at least one Chibi-Robo game), The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes (I've been told you can play by yourself, it's just not recommended, and since I'm a single-player kinda gal, I might as well test out the demo and see how clunky the solo session supposedly is), Bravely Second (sure, why not), and Puzzles and Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition (suuuuure, why not?)
There are other 3DS games I'd love to get, but those are going to be physical hunts later down the line. Some I know will still be easy to nab (The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds), others probably shovelware that I can find in a bargain bin (Doctor Lautrec and the Forbidden Knights), and others ebay is selling at a higher price than normal, but I still might want (Warioware Gold), etc etc.
Regardless, I feel like I picked out a nice selection of games that will tide me over whenever I get the chance to play them. I guess it was, ultimately, a happy hunt for me. Buy physicals whenever you can. Don't be like me, who has to resort to digital-only for these games because I waited till the last damn minute.
...WiiU? What about the WiiU?

2 fandom's meet up :D
⬇️below the drawing there is an explanation of this meet up drawing ⬇️
Tumblr media
On the left side there is Dr.Doktor and Aiden from Gametoons and on the right there is Mango Tango and Gold from Alan Becker.
I was thinking for a while to draw this ever since i saw the AvM episode 30 cause... They have similar backstories.
The meaning of "similar backstories" is honesty true about that fact. Here is some explanation of what i mean.
Spoilers of episodes from both series ahead
•°•°•°•
I've known the Novisor since the first episode since I've been watching Gametoons from the couple episodes from AUL. And there was a backstory of Novisor in the first episode with presenting Aiden, how he met Mr.Duncan, he got this computer, playing Amoung Us then something goes wrong as it wasn't the real game but a corrupted version that Novisor was like had control over it (?) And later on as Veteran explains after he closed the game and went to his roommate it turned out it wasn't actually them and this whole time it was on the laptop. Somehow Aiden was sucked in the game not realizing it. But there were hints he was as before he started playing the game he couldn't leave the server. And like that Novisor took Aiden as his vessel. Dr.Doktor wasn't yet presented in the series in that time. Later on in the i think before last episode we had got presented to Dr.Doktor telling Ninja the origins of Novisor. But we didn't know much about him. And i don't know about others but i though then he was a bad guy due in the end of that episode he said "not to worry Player, where we are going we don't need visor's to see". And he brings Player, Captain and Ninja to the Novisor realm. And as we go to the final episode (not counting the Pibby corruption In gametoons realm. That's a different series) Dr.Doktor revealed that he was the father of Aiden and what he was doing was to bring his son back and give to Novisor Player as his new vessel. But later on Player convince Dr.Doktor that if he wants to help his son he can't just work for the very thing that took Aiden so he changed sides.
Now how familiar does that sound to the AvM season 3?
Mango Tango in the beginning was known as a bad guy that wanted to destroy Minecraft (not sure how the fandom was back then cause i joined 2 months later after AvM 30) and there wasn't a lot explanation why he was doing that until the backstory of his and Gold. That everything was fine until in the festival he saw the Minecraft simulator and he played it until something went wrong. And Gold dint make it as he slipped back to the game and the game crashed/had a fatal error. Later MT wanted to destroy Minecraft after what happened to Gold.
Does that sound close similar backstories?
Both dad's were doing something for there sons entering the game that did something to them.
There are some difference of course. Dr.Doktor was trying to get Player as a new vessel for Novisor to realease Aiden while MT was trying to destroy Minecraft after the simulator crashed with Gold still stuck inside of it. But.... Both fathers wanted revenge after what happened to their sons. That's a fact that is kinda similar.
•°•°•°•
So yeah that is why I drew this thinking about similar backstories of two different series and fandom's. Also did that since all 4 characters in the drawing are my favorite character from both series.

I've been wanting to ask you this for quite some time now, but I keep forgetting about it until now.
I know about the KP situation and your wish to no longer have any association with the game. And I understood your reasons for it.
But I have to ask you about this one. I'm cureently writing a KP fanfic that has been planned before the announcement of about your partings. And unfortunately, three of the six main characters are a Panther, a Carneline, and a Lantern Shork, which is yours.
You clearly don't want to associate with KP anymore, and I really wanted to respect your wish and change the characters, but... I couldn't bring myself to do it.
I didn't expect myself to get SO attached to their designed, but these three have the coolest designs I've ever seen, espacially the felines.
I also plan on making a story based on some fandoms I'm in, which includes KP and MBD (aka transfur game without goo TFs and got darker lore). And one of the species in the story is a parasitic humanoid feline similar to Panther and Carneline combined, but right now it's starting to get too similar after I learn about the announcement.
Speaking of the fanfic, I also plan to make another version of it that replaces your species with the ones that will take their place in KP also I finish it.
In short: I got too attached with some of your designs.
i've been dwelling on this ask for some time now since i've been trying to find ways of getting across what i want to get across without sounding nasty, but this answer is probably going to sound at least very abrupt and irritable regardless, and i might end up making myself sound like a deranged maniac in it as well, but i feel like i'm repeating myself like a broken record at this point over my designs/species, especially since you've literally already stated in this ask that you are in fact aware of my stance on this subject and that you plan on disrespecting and going against my wishes anyway.
i am aware that i physically cannot stop you or anyone else from using them in your creative works since they are pretty much public domain and i have encouraged people to use and have fun with them, but i have also gone at length before to state how upsetting and uncomfortable i find their continued association with transfur games and the like to be, which is why i requested them to be removed from kaiju paradise in the first place.
my uncomfortability with that subject stems from the fact that the term "transfur" originates (as far as i know) from what could basically be considered a fetish game (changed) and the concept in and of itself is literally based around the transformation fetish. i initially did not seem to take issue with this for a while after i became a contributor and artist for kaiju paradise as i was told that they are attempting to branch as far away from this fetish and the aforementioned game as possible, but after a while, particularly after the incident with the owner of the charem design (fyi they were outed as a predator and were literally coaxing children and minors into drawing and participating in activities revolving around multiple fetishes, including transfur and transformation), i started becoming very uncomfortable and uneasy with my ties to this kind of game (games that were also being made accessible to children on a children's game platform no less) and started to come to the realisation that i no longer wanted anything to do with it. this state i was in was also not helped by my decline in mental health at the time as i was dealing with the losses of a few close family members as well.
you've already stated, as i've already mentioned, that you are aware of the fact that i do not want my designs associated with this subject and you are practically telling me with this ask that you know this, but are going to continue what you're doing anyway, which i find to be really selfish. while i know that writing is difficult, you've also mentioned that you are also at least planning on working on a version of the same piece of writing without my designs involved. again, i physically cannot stop you from continuing to do what you're doing, but if you're already planning on writing that alternate version anyway, please at least consider being somewhat respectful of my wishes and leave me and my designs out of this. i don't really care if the alternate version has characters that are "similar" or serve the same purpose without directly involving me or my designs. just as long as they're not involved i would be very grateful.
while i'm on the topic, i feel like i should also mention that i am currently working out redesigns for my species based around alien specbio since it's a subject i find super interesting. i haven't 100% worked every bit of it out since it's in the very early stages of conceptualisation but these sketches are what i've got so far. i'm also encouraging people to use these new redesigns for fun if they want to as long as what i've already stated in this fucking essay of a response is taken into account. if you've read this far thank you for at least taking the time to hear what i have to say and i apologise for it being so long-winded, but at this point i feel like i practically have to be in order for me to even begin to get the message across to you people

You might have seen it already but, there's an official Wrathion plush now!
I saw. He's adorable and I'm sorely tempted. I just wish they'd made him years ago when I was really obsessed with the character. Oh well, I had a very cuddly dragon plushie (the "Merlin" one by Douglas Toys) that was "my" Wrathion.
I should probably update this blog with the status of my interest in WoW, since it's been a long time.
I wish I could say I'm back in love with Warcraft, but I'm not. My subscription ran out several months ago.
TL;DR version of the part below: Not feeling the WoW love anymore. Wish I was. I'm not really on this site much these days, either. This blog will continue to exist, just with very few updates unless I suddenly feel the spark again. I've been doing original writing instead these days. Hope everything is well out there in Tumblr-land.
Due to changes and crap at my job I didn't have any PTO left to take like I normally do for Blizzcon, but I'm just kind of numb about the franchise these days so I honestly don't think I would have taken it off, even if I had the option. Which is depressing, because that was a tradition for me as long as Blizzcons have been livestreamed.
Shadowlands just plain killed my love for the franchise to such an extent that even a dragon-centric expansion couldn't revive it. I wanted it to so, so much, but if that didn't do it, nothing can. Maybe I shouldn't blame SL completely, though, because I'd been playing since vanilla and that's a long time to be deeply immersed in any fictional universe. Maybe it was just time. I don't know, but it still makes me sad that I can't get dopamine from WoW anymore, when it was a sure-fire supplier for so long.
I'm not 100% ruling out that I'll get back into the game at some point in the future, but I'm not feeling it these days.
This blog isn't going anywhere. I have literally thousands of posts, hundreds of screenshots, and many years invested here.
However, my motivation for Tumblr kind of fizzled at around the same time my WoW love did, so I haven't scrolled through my dash in ages. I sometimes will search for a topic or see a post I like as I pass by on my way to update the blog for my original universe, @kavrillia, so once in a while I reblog something to @skarletterambles, my off-topic/multi-fandom catchall blog, but even that's pretty dead these days.
I've spent most of my leisure time writing, editing, and drawing for my original universe these days--which I'm enjoying a lot, but nobody else is familiar with it so I'm basically doing it all for myself.
*insert self-deprecating joke about how not many people read my WoW fics so what difference does it really make*
Anyway, sorry if this post is a downer. Like I said, I wish I still got the enjoyment out of the Warcraft franchise that I did for so many years, but I can't force my brain to feel a certain way. I hope if anyone actually read this far that they're still having a lot of fun with WoW. Thanks for following my blog!

Through the Screen
OC fic collab with @reptilia0freptiles
Read her version of the prologue HERE
Prologue: Amethyst & Stella
It had been ten months since it happened. Stella had been on her computer and decided to do a silly little doodle. A stick figure. Then that stick figure moved and became her best friend. Their name was Amethyst and they grew close in the span of ten months. From playing games together, to drawing and just hanging out the two had become nearly inseparable. When Stella went outside, she'd bring her phone so Amethyst could join her. However, Stella had begun to grow concerned for her friend. The stick figure never had a chance to meet anybody or talk to other people and they were scared of being alone. She needed to make more friends... But how? Who could she tell about the stick figure living in her computer? Perhaps she could find someone who already knew this could happen, or maybe even find another stick figure.
Amethyst was messing around with different brushes and drawing weapons for a costume when she accidentally hit the wifi button. They removed the axe and saw that there was a white glow behind it. They waved for Stella to come look and she moved her cursor to it. Amethyst wanted to know what was causing the glow so she peeled back part of the screen and saw a hole that lead to a whole other world. Unfortunately, Stella couldn't see it from her angle so Amethyst had to doodle it for her.
"You should check it out. You might meet new friends. This could be a chance for you to find other stick figures! Worst case scenario it's empty. That's still a cool looking beach and forest. Best case scenario you find a civilization of welcoming stick figures that you can hangout with!"
"That would be pretty cool. I'd like to explore. If I make any friends I'll introduce them to you."
"Alright! So how will you get down there safely?"
"I'll draw some wings and fly. I'm also gonna bring the brush just in case I need anything while I'm down there."
"Have fun!"
"I will!"
Flying was a lot more fun than she expected. Was this how birds felt? They'd only ever seen pictures of them but probably. The wind made a funny little whistling noise on her wings as they soar over the digital forest below her. There was a dot of color in the forest that stood out to them. Upon closer inspection, it was a magenta stick figure in the forest below. THERE WAS ANOTHER STICK FIGURE! They glided down to introduce herself.
"Hi! What's your name?"
She offered a handshake to the strange stick. The other stick looked at her horrified before regaining their composure enough to shout
"DID YOU JUST FLY DOWN HERE?!"
"Yes… is that not okay? I've never been here before." Amethyst responded while fidgeting with her necklace.
The stick figure shook their head
"Not illegal, per say, more like nobody wants to interact with a superpowered stick. Neither do I..." she mumbled out the last part.
"Oh. Sorry about that. I don't have any powers, I'm just wearing a set of wings I drew before leaving my PC. I can take them off if they're making you uncomfortable."
The figure gave a weak smile "Nah, it's fine. But maybe it's better so no one else sees you. Anyway, I'm Cerise. Vivid Cerise."
"I'm Amethyst. Why would it be bad if I were seen?" Amethyst gave a confused look.
"Not many sticks around here like superpowers or the such anymore. Long story short, we ended up with a blown up mountain because who knows why." Cerise explained.
"That does sound pretty bad. I'll put my wings away for now. Better to be safe probably. Would you like to be friends?"
Cerise blinked at the sudden request, then smiled, genuinely this time. "Yeah, sure, why not?"
"Hell yeah! I've only been in this world for about half an hour and I already made a friend!" Amethyst exclaimed as she jumped into the air in celebration.
Afterwards, Amethyst offered to introduce them to her creator, Stella.
"She's really cool. We're best friends. It was actually her idea for me to explore the digital world when we found a way there hidden behind the WiFi."
Cerise, intrigued, nodded "Sure. I didn't realize you were a created stick, but that makes sense. I'll go."
Amethyst brought Cerise to the PC where Stella was practicing her drawing skills.
"Back already- Oh! Who's that stick figure? New friend? My name's Stella, what's yours?"
Tentatively taking a step forwards, Cerise introduced herself to Stella.
"I'm Cerise. Nice to meet you."
Stella couldn't hear her and continued waiting for a response. Luckily, Amethyst saw what was going on and grabbed a textbox.
"She can't hear you through the screen. Use this."
"Seriously? Fine." Cerise took the textbox and typed in her greeting.
"Oh. Cerise huh? Nice name. Would you like to play videogame with me?" She floated the cursor close so Cerise could give a sort of handshake.
After a moment of thought, she nodded and wrote another message.
"Sure, I can play! I'll have to go back down to stickcity soon, so let's make this quick"
They played video games for about an hour before Cerise had to leave and Amethyst dropped her off back at stickcity. They agreed to bring her own friends next time she visited the computer.

Fear not, for the Hooded Robin has arrived!
This is the first time I'm posting an art piece concurrently on Twitter and tumblr. I'm showing characters here largely out of order, but since the movie is coming out soon, I thought it'd be best to show this one here now. As you can see, it's the Hooded Robin from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! This is the first non-game Mario character I added - meaning anything from the TV shows, movies, and comics is now on the table. I'm excited to work on other characters like this, as Hooded Robin was really fun to adopt in my artstyle.
I'll go ahead and talk some about the art piece. Not exactly a breakdown like what I've been doing, but basically the long and arduous design process. While designing him was fun, sketching him was absolutely not. I started sketching him at about 11:30 PM last night, and was determined to finish him by the time I went to bed. I stayed up until 2:00 in the morning trying to get him right, coming up with and discarding ideas for the pose and how his body should look.

Just look at how many eraser marks are here. Jeez this took so long. At one point I wanted to essentially copy the Splatoon 3 pose, the one with the Inkling charging up the bow weapon. That fell through because I couldn't find a way to draw his body without it looking lazy, so I scrapped that and tried finding a more standard-looking pose. There were like three versions of the pose I eventually went with, the first I discarded because he was just standing and that looked kinda weird and stilted, and the second I had to completely redo the lower body because his legs originally had reversed positions, and I thought it'd look more natural if they swapped.
Thankfully, I soon got a pose I was satisfied with, and finished him digitally this morning. Tracing over sketches to do the lineart is normally long and tedious for me, but after what I had to go through to get the sketch done it was painless. If you wanted to see how dedicated I am to my art, there you go.
anyway Super Show is a fun time and I wanted to add a character from it. Love how he came out! And I'm 99% sure this is the first fanart of Hooded Robin ever made. Will gladly take that prestegeious title.

it's been a while since i last proposed that dress-up doll game idea for sister, and although my drawing device got busted, i have an old scan of my original idea? the final version was intended to look like the game Love Nikki- Dress UP Queen, with a sidebar showing each different outfit component and more hairstyles/dresses. sadly it was not meant to be...
cxc really interested me with its ideas about art(ifice) and so many of the descriptions of fashion in the consortium interested me. the alchemist is a galatea clad in gold, van der gramme is mysterious and wreathed in smoke, and sister is- a small anime girl in lolita clothing? all of their styles are intensely unique, so it ties in with the thematic extremes of hot vs. cold, civilized society vs. the spirited individual, etc. sometimes i feel like my brain is a bit too small for all of this when it is so interested in the cute clothes.
still, something that really haunted me about certain non-fashion-related scenes were how they were brought back throughout the novel. for one, the first roleplay scene is depressing in hindsight. harper's alienated childhood is akin to the emptiness of space, her domestic fantasy with kyosuke is just as superficial as the kinkade painting, and the seraph is a break in the dream world just as terrifying as her nightmare about the cottage door opening. all these suppressed fears and desires bring some sympathy to her character imo, despite her self-professed selfishness/utter disregard for those around her.
it's kind little hard to imagine that the porn scenes were hard for you to write, because they were awfully eloquent and most of the time they didn't feel sexual at all, especially not later on. more like sublimated representations of the characters communicating or trying to exert control over each other? it feels explicit in, say, the allison apple rp when the participants cut in out-of-character, but setsuna's scene also struck me as a confession of weakness between harper and sister that wouldn't have happened without the masks of setsuna and the comtesse.
but hey, you are the author after all! i'd hate to be blathering on like this and still be misinterpreting what you meant. hopefully you enjoy the artwork, as rough as it is ^-^
I couldn't be more pleased with this art of Sister, finished or not. I feel like you did a great job of capturing of capturing her different outfits throughout the story; I particularly want to shoutout the "original Comtesse" design that so accurately captures the aesthetic of that early 00s era of gothic lolita (Petite Cosette, Rozen Maiden). Also I'm always gonna say "yea" to the Mami hat.
As for your commentary on the story itself, I don't think you're misinterpreting at all. When writing CxC I was heavily influenced by Rebellion, a film I've seen at least 10 times, which handles storytelling significantly via motifs and recurring visual elements as much as traditional forms of storytelling like plot/character/dialogue/etc. Rebellion is so jam-packed with details that twist and change shape and context throughout the narrative and I always get something out of rewatching it because I always make a new connection that I didn't notice before. I wanted to do that with CxC; that's the purpose of motifs like the spider and alchemy and so on. In Ch 4 Harper accidentally stumbles on a bit of poetry by an Armenian author regarding the Armenian genocide; in Mimmy's final chapter this poem returns in reference to the Armenian censor and is extended to refer to Mimmy's own prophecy of a populace "masturbating to death"--which is itself a phrase that appears three times throughout the story, all by different speakers in different contexts.
I hope the people who enjoyed CxC--or even the people who thought it might have had a spark, but didn't quite get it--will take the time one day to reread it, picking up on some more of those elements seeded throughout the story, deriving more meaning out of what's there. I think if you put in that effort you'll be rewarded for it.
