What's distressing, but also important to understand, about JK Rowling hitting the "Denying trans people were targeted in the Holocaust" point is that it's kind of the last stop before she just goes full alt-right weirdo.
Joanne is denying the Holocaust (if a group was targeted, denying they were targeted is Holocaust denial) and that's going to lead to pushback from historians and experts. But Joanne is too deep in to believe what anyone who disagrees with her says, so she's just going to dismiss what those historians and experts tell her. And once she's disbelieving them about that one thing, well it's just a tiny step to start disbelieving them about other things.
This isn't by accident either, transphobic circles are swarming with far right agitators, ready to use hatred of trans people as an in to recruit people into their causes. They have handbooks for this sort of thing and they are, unfortunately, good at it. I suspect Joanne will be spouting coded versions of Great Replacement stuff by the end of the summer.
This is not a plea to try and pull Joanne out. She's too deep in, and even if she wasn't, she's already demonstrated an inability to examine her own prejudices, an unwillingness to hear criticism and a weakness to flattery. She is perfect recruitment bait for people who know what they're doing, and my impression is she's surrounded herself with people like that.
No, this is to understand two things: First is to use her as an example, to understand how a well meaning liberal can chase their own prejudices down a very dark rabbit hole. We are none of us immune to propaganda and even if we can't change what's happened to her, we can at least use it to protect ourselves.
And second is to understand that one of the main reasons you can't pull Joanne out of the transphobic pipeline is cause she is the pipeline now. She is the transphobic banner bearer now, she is funneling money and attention to these groups, she is their most famous celebrity and she is helping recruit people. Being able to show people how far she's gone, how deep into the right wing rabbit hole she's going, is important to help other people who still think she just "Had some concerns" know where her path leads.

My thoughts on the Aventurine drama
I've been inactive for a while, I was (still am) busy in real life but coming back online to post and seeing discourse about a newly crowned favorite character is disheartening. Even more so, that people are harassing other writers over a drama I feel is overblown.
I have thoughts regarding it but I'm unsure if my opinion would be appreciated. But if you'd like to peacefully talk it out with me, I'd be happy to lend an ear. I'd like to hear both sides, as meager as my opinion may be.
Oh boy, here we go.
Aventurine is a character, a fictional being born to entertain the players. He is not real. He can not be offended by what you create of him. There is no point getting upset on the behalf of a character and prioritizing fiction over a person who does actually exist.
If we do want to condemn slavery fics, why not also cancel slave reader fics? Or ones that include things such as dead dove (including yanderes in general) fics because those topics are equally terrible to condone and write about from that point of view. Or how about other characters that have similar topics in their lore. Should those also be canceled too?
*There are also folks who make problematic pieces to help cope with their own trauma. Does that mean they should be canceled too? (On that note: making a piece that holds problematic content does not always mean the person condones it in real life. Fiction is fiction for a reason.)
In the end, I think everyone can have their own opinions, but I would like to say that your opinions do not justify terrible actions. Just because you disagree with something does not justify you bullying someone into deleting one of their works, whether it is art or writing or anything else, I do not think that is justifiable. Harassing someone or calling people to harass them is not right either.
*If you did disagree with it, why not message the author about it instead of making accusatory posts? Even when done with good intentions, all it does is cause harm when it's practically inviting people to go harass someone over a fanfiction. A very mild fanfiction at that.
If you disagree with a piece, cool. That's your opinion. Just don't interact with it then. Block that creator or that tag or whatever it is that led you there. Or if you're curious, ask that creator.
Also, to reiterate, in my opinion, fiction is still just fiction. Especially when it's a fanfiction about a fictional character. Yes, his canon lore exists, but people can use that basis in fanfiction, something that will inherently warp canon because we are not the original writers and can not capture him in the exact way he was created. In case that doesn't make sense: Fanfiction does not have to comply with the original lore. Also since some of you seem to be forgetting: fiction does not mirror real life.
If you are truly that concerned over sensitive topics like that, directing that energy towards projects that involve such topics in real life would be much better than attacking people on the internet.

there are these reoccurring series of thoughts that go through my head when I'm alone, and it's usually me fucking up throughout my "career" (i hate that word!) because of my lack of experience.
I hate remembering them i hate being reminded of the shame i felt during those times ! logically i should be forgiving of myself because of the situation i was in when those times happened but they still come back to me full force like i want to go back and have an apology tour like im sorry i literally taught myself illustration while i was steeping and marinating in 20 years of severe abuse while managing a "career" which means i wasn't functioning the same way everyone was like??? good grief
does anyone else have these kinds of anxieties? like don't u just wanna go back and slap yourself in the head

Some thoughts about promoting modernisation of tales that are supposed to be old.
"This to me just feels like something that has just the furthest possible reach and, you know, we're choosing to tell it in these times, so we should represent it for these times."
– Cynthia Addai-Robinson
Tumblr media
This is from an interview Cynthia Addai-Robinson did about Amazon's LOTR series, and I thought about it for a while in the context of this show's promotion in general. I understand and support the desire to tell modern stories suited for modern sentiments and aimed at a modern audience.
However, I don't think Tolkien's work is suited for modernisation if they want to stay "true to Tolkien" – yet this is the other pillar of Amazon's promotion. Nobody is forcing Amazon to stay "true to Tolkien", mind you, they have many options what they want to do with the show. But the series' showrunners have repeately stated that they want to stay "true" to Tolkien and that they always "go back to the books".
I have an issue with this marketing because I don't think these things can work at the same time. Not because it couldn't be done theoretically (it can be done with any story), but because Tolkien set his stories in the past on purpose. They are not meant to be modern.
"But at that last word of Fëanor: that at the least the Noldor should do deeds to live in song for ever, [Manwë] raised his head, as one that hears a voice far off, and he said: 'So shall it be! Dear-bought those songs shall be accounted, and yet shall be well-bought. For the price could be no other. [...]'"
– from the Quenta Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien
Tumblr media
Tolkien was inspired by British literature, Germanic, Celtic, Greek and Finish mythology, and Christianity. His writings often imitate the style of older traditions, including songs, which are of great importance to his legends. Not for nothing is it the one of Fëanor's claims that not even Manwë can deny – that their stories would live forever in songs...
Tolkien's stories feel like memories of something long gone, heroic epics that were written down and passed through records and dreams until they reach us here in our time. They come in diaries and tales of adventure, they come in texts of knowledge, chronologies, annals, and poems. They are recorded in the Red Book of Westmarch by Hobbits and Gondorian scholars, by Ælfwine and Pengolodh on Tol Eressëa, and dreamed by Alwin Lowdham or Alboin and Audoin.
I understand the purpose of the modernisation done in the show, but the focus they put on it every time cast and crew discuss the show feels off. From the show's promotion I get the feeling that there is no understanding of the atmosphere that especially the tales of the First and Second Age of Middle-earth are supposed to convey. The focus on making these tales appear modern stands contrary to Tolkien's efforts to make them appear as if they belonged into very old history, as if they come from myths and legends. My impression from reading Tolkien's work and his letters was always that he hoped for people to get interested in myths, legends and fairytales – and not to adapt his writings to suit modern interests.
(Edit just to make sure it's clear: this is about the idea of having to modernize these tales and the continued focus on it, not a criticism of diverse casting - which still could have been done without all the fanfare.)

rant.
as far as being in the milgram fandom goes, i feel like an incredible outsider. reading theories isnt something im interested in-- on the contrary, its actually something i find quite stressful.
kind of why i enjoy reading fanficion for any fandom so much. its just an out. a lot of it isnt meant to conform to canon perfectly, and i think that is wonderful. it is about people creating their own stories even if they know its not true/will never happen. with theories its almost... overwhelming with the amount of information you're meant to take into consideration. thats not to say fanfic writers making up canon divergence stories dont do this because god they DO, and they often do it more than theory crafters sometimes-- but again, its less stressful because it is completely removed from canon.
when canon doesn't go the way you want it too, thats hard. its frustrating. it makes you angry and upset, sad, or any other emotion. when its fanfiction, all you can really do is tell yourself is 'hey, i didnt enjoy this, but it just wasn't a fic for me'.

It's hard to admit this, but... I'm stuck. Plots, sentences, scenes are all in my mind, however I can't find a way to write them down in a proper way. Anything I wrote in the last two weeks sucks (V-Day story included) and I'm always so tempted to delete every single word. I have time, I exercise, I go out, I have fun and yet... I'm stuck. It sucks and it's making me so frustrated. Writing is the one of the few things I'm proud of and if I can't even do that... ugh.
