#I’m just saying he’s gotta be more of a menace beyond just being a cannibal
Text
My Qi Rong headcannon of the day (incorporating my design for him) is that like Hua Cheng, he can change his appearance so that even after he loses his mask in the second book/season, people can’t exactly say he looks like Xie Lian. My design for him really turns him into a goblin so if we pretend he looks like that then he’s intentionally becoming something as far from Xie Lian as he can, but his true form would be much more beautiful and their similarity much more prominent. But in canon he doesn’t actually have enough power to do that I don’t think? Hua Cheng is powerful enough to have multiple forms so maybe Qi Rong can get by with having only one.
And ignoring my design for him, I think this is also why he wears a mask. Pretty boy don’t like being reminded he’s related to Xie Lian.
I also have a headcannon that he was executed by decapitation with the royal xianle family so in the afterlife he has a huge scar around his neck. He’d get pissed off to find it mirrors Xie Lian’s cursed shackle.
In other words he’s trying to be something as far from Xie Lian as possible, even if he has to make himself as ugly as he can to do so.

He’s on my walls now…

ok thoughts and a zillion spoilers now that I’ve finished vol 5 of tgcf and gone for a walk to process the emotional trauma i’ve just so enthusiastically subjected myself to. this is long and messy and very incomplete thoughts in no particular order i just have lots of feelings ok
Pei Ming’s “ho ho” fucking killed me like I’m HOWLING with laughter just thinking about it
Rain Master is just there to be quietly spectacular in the midst of all the drama this was a breath of fresh air so excellent
Wind Master? ilu
the relationship/dynamic/friendship(?) between Crimson Rain and Dark Water?  “it’s ok he owes me money” fuck i’ll admit it i laughed so hard
actually i really really like He Xuan and wanted a lot more of him. what can I say I’m a sucker for dark ocean aesthetic
hua cheung’s level of obsessive at times made me squirm (i’d probably be on the same page as Mu Qing and Feng xin in the caves with their “hOLY SHit wtf” i mean I was laughing at it but also like “yeah this is so awkwardly weird”) so when Xie Lian was all “that’s cool” I had to remind myself that XL is a god so of course he’d be into having this one singular devoted-beyond-all-reason babetastic follower and looking at it from that dynamic is really what this is all about
regardless, I’m so invested in this relationship
the domestic bliss at Puqi Shrine good lord I could read five books of just that
Heavenly Eye and literally everything from the monk’s arrival at the shrine to the ghost inn was a riot. sure maybe the “THERE’S EVIL ON YOUR LIPS” etc was a little on the nose but heh gotta make it even more awkward somehow
slapstick isn’t usually my thing but damn i literally lmao’d at parts I can’t wait to see it all come to life in the donghua
white no-face was so menacing and horrifying i loved it and I loved seeing Xie Lian suffer and yet continue to make the same choices over and over and over and then have it so blatantly compared to beating his head against a wall (literally)
i really loved the creepy horror (what can I say hanging dead bodies and decapitations and cannibalism and nearly drowning while being hunted by a weird aborted fetus and the creepy talking rats and the tunnels approaching Qi Rong’s lair and all sorts of deliciously dark stuff is like right up my alley) volume 5 was so much more action/unveiling everything which was I guess needed but I admit I missed the shamelessly dark “augh no!”/heebie jeebies of earlier parts
every single moment of Hua Cheng being rude/scary/protective gave me life
every single moment of Hua Cheng being soft/tender/awkward also gave me life
xie lian. what is there to say. there is too much to say. fuck my heart just let me die from all these feelings
i wanted so much more for the reunion outside the Kiln or I guess of hua cheng losing his fucking mind (i’m going on a mission for a fic just of this as soon as I’m done posting this)
the dichotomy of xie lian on the altar with white no-face (sickeningly awful) and the make-out session on the altar with hua cheng (yES) fuck I could write an essay about how many complicated thoughts and feelings this gives me
k i know the whole coffin thing was just a gratuitous detour and achieved literally nothing but i am but a simple reader with simple tastes and yeah alright i ate that shit up
i lol’d when it came back to Pei Ming making those other coffins for no good reason
hua cheng changing the bloody rain to flower petals for xie lian? my heart swooned ngl
their fucking dinner date in the ghost city was excellent
actually everything in the ghost city from the encounter in the gambling hall to being all handsy in paradise manor to qiandeng temple and all the ridiculous minor characters yes yes yes
all of hua chengs grand romantic gestures. the lanterns. sharing his good luck. building a door. literally everything he does so fervently for XL I can’t take it
i knew what the ring was INSTANTLY still even that made my heart soar
butterflies of death are my new fave aesthetic. literally everything is so aesthetic. I’m so glad the official art is appropriately MINDBLOWING
the de-aging trope isn’t usually my thing BUT it was good. i love that it was a chance for XL to be the one to protect HC while going “OMG YOU’RE SO CUTE” meanwhile hua cheng was just like “kill me now”
oh the fake puppetmaster scene where HC is so sincere and XL is like “haha this is just play acting” guys the level of OBLIVIOUS killed me i love it
i like that so few of the relationships are clear cut and simple. like they’ve all been kicking around for centuries, they’re all big personalities, feelings and relationships are complicated. this is some good shit.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the dynamic between Mu Qing and Feng Xin. frenemies forever.
there was plenty of foreshadowing for Jun Wu but I still expected differently?? not good or bad or shocked/surprised just... idk. I guess White no-face had such a disturbing presence but Jun Wu didn’t hit quite the same way? (i mean, he’s powerful and manipulative but I guess I’m a sucker for a more quiet horror) also expected differently for Lang Ying? (I don’t know what exactly I expected but I guess that wasn’t it?) might feel differently on a second read but hmm.
also finally, I have to say, the MECHA??
Tumblr media
that said I liked how everything built up and unfolded piece by piece i thought it was really satisfying overall and the ending was good but I need so much more so gotta turn to fic to get my fill from here on out.
I’m really really looking forward to reliving this all again in the manhua/donghua.
