#Hatsune Miku #VOCALOID #or rather #piapro characters #Hatsune Miku Single String Ver.#<- yep that's the fan module I made for fun last year #the thing is. only half a month to go until it's mid autumn. and every year I try to draw something for the occasion #I just. started early this year... for some reason......#well I mostly just wanna draw Her lmao. because the pokemon/miku voltage stuff is still being released and Im feelin the effect #and this year's magical miral design is so fuckign good.... thank u to miku artists. especially LAM and rella #as is always the case with this module the instrument/weapon (lol) she uses is a heavily stylized đàn bầu!#and I just realized while drawing this and looking at the ref sheets that I never detailed the pluck lmao #to be fair. usually its just like a piece of. anything #commonly bamboo or bone or plastic. shaped into a longish fingernail shape. its really the way u hold it that matters iirc #but yeah I spruced up the OG design for the instrument in this one lol. this is actually like my original vision I think #I really wanted to make that thing beast shaped. but I Just figured out how to properly stylize it when I designed the module #and! I did say this on stream but I am genuinely very proud of that design! that was genuinely big brain of me! so #future instrument variants will still probably base heavily on that general shape and principles lol. I'm playin in this space its MY muck #also I switched the number on her coat from 39 to 01 bc it's more on theme thats really it. nothin else to remark on there lol #and! once again based the dragon head on the lý dynasty dragon rather than later iterations. thats why the nose fin and no whiskers #and the metal nozzle is kinda supposed to call to mind a temple bell. not super sure i got that across well #but the rim design IS historical! I thiiiink early lê dynasty. just on ceramics instead of on bronze lmao #anyways thats it. I had fun colorin this one! kicked my ass a bit but I think I hashed it out mostly okay #have a good night lads! thank u mid autumn moon cakes for being bad to eat and sponsoring my late night drawin. and remember:#u only need one. but never say having more doesn't make it easier

#did u guys know drawing realistic proportions doesnt automatically mean the style is Realistic. its something else entirely #talkys #<- obvious stuff like that that my brain cant grasp for my own stuff #like ive been struggling drawing faces bc i dont want to do proportions that are too realistic bc thats boring #so ive been fucking up with worse wonkier faces instead #when proportions arent automatically what makes a piece Realistic or Boring or even Bad etc #well except in the case of my stuff actually being bad and devolving constantly but #you know #i guess its more like >sees artist drawing with realistic facial proportions but the art doesn't look realistic it still looks #stylized and cartoony and not boring >jaw drop

i can try but idrk how to explain myself or make tutorials lol

i think my style is just a product of my brush and what im trying to get out of my art, which is trying to portray the characters as accurately as possible. i rly just want it to look like it could be a stylized redraw of a deleted scene or something

my process is kinda everywhere bc i just move on to whatever step will probably make me hate the piece less when im done with it. i draw with a more square brush (blurring marker 1 on ibis) which i def recommend. its great for focusing on shapes in ur art and it helps me not overblend/forces me to think of more interesting lines/shapes. my sketch is a thicker size of the same pen, focusing on the major shapes and proportions and i just make as many additional layers overtop of it, lowering the size of the pen and adding details as i go

once im at the lineart i usually use a site that creates color palettes based off images (usually just steal some from old catholic art) and i steal my base colors from that. it doesnt matter how terrible ur base colors look as long as they make sense and r what ur generally going for.

these were my original base, i use colored line art and shade the basic shadows using the line art mixed with the base color, highlights r whatever is the lightest color in the palette. after that i duplicate and throw it through this filter

i play w the colors and use it as a color/hue/luminosity layer on top of the original version, lower opacity and render now that theres more colors on the canvas (the filter creates more contrast between the lame base colors i mix, then i can add bounce shadows and shit).

i use a shit ton of digital cheats. single color overlay layers at the end of a piece, pizza face overlay glow, using vignettes around the border to draw the eye towards the subjects at the center, filters, color palette generators, etc. they make things sm easier so u can worry abt experimenting with other things.

i dont rly know how to explain how i do clothes or hair other than focusing on the shadows and worrying abt lights later. this is honestly the best tutorial i can think of bc in my head im just drawing what i see as best as i can with the pen i use. use a fuck ton of reference, do actor face studies, and try to experiment with ur style everytime u draw. ur never gonna learn how to use ur programs or expand if ur bogged down by trying to achieve a specific look. sometimes that thing u were nervous abt bc thats not how ur style usually works is the best thing on the piece at the end.

actually draw only what u want to draw in that very moment and use that as an opportunity to experiment however u can. i just draw chainshipping and find ways to trick myself into learning 👍🏻 sorry this is so bad if u have any specific questions i can try to answer those better

edit: this is what i mean when i say just draw with whatever base colors and use the lineart to add value. i thoroughly hated this piece at this stage but once i adjusted the pallet it felt much more cohesive and i could continue on with the drawing. the best thing i can say is to have absolutely no process past the same few first steps and resign urself to a cycle of self hatred and throwing random bs at the wall to see what sticks

#sorry this is so bad these dubious ass shroom carts beating my god damn ass HOURS later #i deadass woke up saw this and said Fuck bc i knew id want to answer it but i deadass cant think #sorry this didnt make sense. my style id just however i personally fail at achieving complete realism #also merge ur colors and lineart after the base idk makes it less stiff #ive always thought painting is much more forgiving than lineart and cell shading #theyre scary #most of my art is just how i compensate for being unable to rly fully stylize #i havent been able to since high school so i just stick w realism while i unlearn my old bad habits from having an exaggerated style #GOD ANYWAYS #rambling #larry.txt

#if you spent a day in my life you would come to learn how incomplete and silly a good lot of my doodles are #which well ... duh ! but its also like come on. is anybody gonna finish drawing the rest of these characters hair? or arm?#gesture is something i specifically would like to study and i consider a lot of my art to lack that kind of naturalistic essence #/energy which makes A little sense considering something i really love in art and aim for is very specific posing and 'intentional stiffess #like the type you may find in very stylized fairytale/folk art !#so it is very silly when i get to doodling and a lot of it is very swoopy lines and gestural ideas #it varies #i do love some delightful lineart and want to actively push towards achieving a certain look with it #but ive also really loved doing way more loose stuff lately.#and when it comes to said loose/gestural artwork i can never turn it into a ''finished'' piece #should get around to collecting and putting more of that onto my art blog as is ....!#the length of his cloak varies depending on what the drawing calls for #my rambling oh dont look too closely .!! ahh !!

I'm tearing thru this sketchbook i did 19 pages this month

#unless i do another one before march ends #im jst scribbling in here i dont think anythinf is happening though #idk i dont like what im learning #drawing very stylized makes me feel unknowledgeable...or like im not depicting what i want to depict #bc extreme iconic stylization removes that organic human warmth i wanna convey #but then the alternative is drawing too realistic (which is more evident in my trad sketchbooks)#(i know my style in general is NOT realism)#and i dont want. to be too realistic. it makes it harder to get away with certain stylization bc then it looks more obviously ''wrong''#and out of place....aroo #AND ALSO MAKES MY WORK STIFFER!!!! i want to find a balance....#i hate that even when i learn and ''improve'' i get no where closer to drawing how I want! alas #talkys #also running into that super confusing mindset where i look at art i enjoy and think about how if *i* drew that i wouldnt like it #i wish i had someone elses eyes so bad i dont get it
