Percabeth after the first war, who haven’t really gotten to be teenagers, who feel both too old and too young for their skin. Who are so so glad that the war is over, but also feel surprisingly lost, because fighting the war has been their future, their purpose, their job for as long as they can really remember
Annabeth and Percy, who do what all adrift teens do when everything is overwhelming and painful and exciting and when it feels like you don’t have a purpose any more:
they make a bucket list.
it starts small. They go clothes shopping together, close enough to Sally’s house that they can get home quick if they need too. They start to develop their own senses of style. They go to a farmers market. They make graffiti at one point and nearly get caught but the entire time they’re giggling through their fingers.
then comes the hair.
it was just a random item on the bucket list: hair dye.
and they were going to get crazy colors, Percy was going to dye his bright teal blue, no hesitation. He was decided. But then they’re standing in the shopping aisle, looking at the colorful boxes, and Percy’s eyes catch on a model, and they have long dark hair that’s just the same shade as Annabeth’s.
and he scans the aisle, and there’s another one, a bright sandy gold, and he turns to Annabeth, who is debating between silver and purple with all the intensity of a teenage war veteran, and says “I have a stupid idea”
they grab a boxed bleach on their way out.
they dye their hair together, and it’s a mess and the dye gets everywhere and it’s not quite even and both of them get a little light headed from the fumes but it’s so much fun
and they refuse to let anyone in the bathroom until their hair is dyed, rinsed and blow dried even though it takes forever because bleaching is a much longer process
when they finally emerge, Sally gasps and then starts to laugh and then Paul joins in and then they’re all laughing.
Percy’s hair is black, Annabeth’s hair is blond.
They’ve switched hair colors. And it’s silly, but it’s also a constant reminder that they’re not alone.
It’s being able to wake up from a nightmare and seeing blond hair on your pillow instead of black and thinking “Percy”. It’s having a bad day where you can’t seem to keep your mind from slipping away from you, then seeing black hair in the corner of your vision and thinking “Annabeth”. It’s a tangible sign that they are connected, that they are alive, and that there is someone who understands. A physical reminder of love.
When their roots grow out, they look at their inverted hair and smile. Like always, they match.

Note
the sleepover ask with the facepaint got me thinking about the crew dying their hair together (specifically lindsay, fiona, jeremy, matt, and maybe trevor and alfredo for obvious reasons) but also like. the main hair dyers conning the rest of the fahc to let them put in some temporary dye and going absolutely wild with the colors
I LOVE THIS TOO OMG, alright so, here's how I imagine this:
Lindsay: It was her idea to begin with. She was talking about how she didn't know which color to go with next, and Jeremy was like "yeah me neither :/" So ofc she's like!! All of us should dye our hair!!!! Jeremy, Matt, Fiona, and the twins are DOWN for it, but the rest of em ehhhh not so much. Her and Jeremy sort of spearhead the project since they have the most experience, and literally speed to the nearest store to buy a ton of hair dye, both permanent and temporary. When they get back, Lindsay gets hers done first because "Hey guys it was my idea so fuck you" and I LOVE the idea of Lindsay with like,, pastel pink hair, and she wants to try something new, so pastel pink it is!! It ends up being more white at the tips but has a nice ombre effect, and she actually loves it! She says it's a good way to trick people into thinking she's all soft and nice before she shows em who the real Queen of Chaos is :)
Jeremy: Jeremy was actually a bit unsure. He didn't wanna leave behind the vibrant orange and purple of his hair at first, since it would've thrown off his Rimmy persona. He finally settles on simply turning his vibrant purple to a nice muted lavender shade, and turning the orange white as well! It actually doesn't look as bad as he thought it would, and he does miss his Rimmy colors, but it's nice to not have Michael and Gav call his hair an eyesore lol
Fiona: Fiona knew immediately what she wanted. Deep purple that fades to black. She said it would look mysterious and cool and would attract ladies (and she was right, I would die if she had this hair color 🥺)
Matt: This boy had no idea what he wanted at first. He wasn't a fan of dying all of his hair, so he kept to doing the single streak. He ended up settling on orange. It was his favorite color after all, and he had yet to try it. It came out practically NEON though which he did not expect, and actually wasnt a fan of at first, but now he likes how it looks. It complements his vehicles nicely in his opinion
Trevor and Alfredo: These two knew they had to do SOMETHING to match each other, they just didn't know what. They decided to look up complimentary colors, and eventually were like, "let's get the brightest, most vibrant shades of blue and red we can get" and everyone wasn't onboard at first bc, jeez guys c'mon we just got rid of Jeremy's mess, not you too- But nothing could stop them. By the end of it, Trevor's hair was nearly the color of the blue on Ryan's jacket, and Alfredo's matched his vibrant red leather jacket perfectly, which he loved
The others needed some coaxing, but eventually decided they'd let em dye theirs with the temporary dye:
Gavin: Yknow how the twins wanted something vibrant and obnoxious? Yeah, Gavin went with rainbow fucking streaks throughout all of his hair and was a squealing, laughing mess by the end of it, he loved it
Michael: Michael was probably the one who wanted it the least (other than maybe Geoff) but he decided it wouldn't hurt just this once. He WANTED just some frosted tips. Plain and natural colors. But OOPS Lindsay's hand slipped and now his tips are a neon green oh man haha what a funny mistake :) anyways, he was angry of course, but he gets over it before long. It's the same shade as the green on their logo, so Fake pride?? That's the excuse he uses for not killing Jeremy and Lindsay for thinking of this anyway
Ryan: Ryan went all out, which nobody was expecting. He went full black, with a bright, electric blue streak all the way through. One that would still show when he put his hair up. (He actually ended up liking the black, and would dye his hair more permanently in the future)
Jack: She loved the idea! But just like Michael, didn't want anything too insane. That was until she saw the turquoise and over shades of light blue and was like !!! Ocean colors please! Jack loves the beach and you cant change my mind. By the end of it, her entire head faded from a bright turquoise at the top to a very deep, oceanic blue at the tips. It actually ended up looking the best out of the whole group
And finally there was Geoff: He really didn't want this. So much so that he went to sleep before they could get to him. Ah, but poor Geoff. Never be the first one to pass out at a slumberparty. Then next morning, Geoff woke up in his bed. Which is normal. He didn't wanna sleep downstairs with the others. He heads downstairs to find that nobody has left yet, and it's almost like the party never stopped. Sure a few people are still asleep like Gavin, Matt and Ryan who was just waking up, but just the same as he had left the group the night before. Alfredo notices him first, and holds back a chuckle.
"Good morning, old man."
"Morn- Wait, what'd you just call me?! I'm not old, asshole!"
Jeremy chimes in, "I dunno, Geoff. Lookin' a bit rough this morning. Have you looked in the mirror yet?"
Geoff stands there for a second confused before walking to the bathroom. What's heard next is just. A scream. You know, one of those Geoff screams. He comes running back out to find everyone laughing at him. Literally everyone. Gavin and Matt were woken up by the scream. They knew it'd make him mad, but hey. He learned his lesson about being the first to pass out, and they all learned what he'd look like in the future when his hair started to go gray :)
Safe to say, they didn't have another slumber party for a while. Totally worth it though.

How about #9: “I may or may have not gone a little crazy with the tie-dye.” ;D
thanks for the request!! i hope you like this, it was fun to write ❤
It started with that one shirt they did for a video. People’s First Time Doing Tie-dye. Of course, both of them would get invited, it was most definitely the weird silly thing that would bring out all the banter people love to watch so much. And it did.
They had an absolute blast, somehow ending up covered in dye in patches, up to their elbows, even with the gloves and plastic covers that were provided to protect their clothes. There was also a big blue streak across Ryan’s left cheek, probably thanks to Shane, that was still there the next day, though considerably faded, thankfully.
Yeah, Shane thought that one video was definitely to blame for starting it. The it in question was Ryan showing up in the tie-dye shirt he made for the video one day. The splash of colors on him was an unexpected, though a not unwelcome surprise. Ryan got a lot of compliments, Shane noticed. He also noticed Ryan’s proud smile when he told the people who were interested in getting one for themselves, that he, in fact, made it himself.
It was a nice shirt indeed, Shane mused. Certainly better than the one he made, his colors ended up mixing in a bad way, god knows how, and making ugly greenish gray blotches, so he didn’t even bother taking it home. He was getting distracted again, by that damn piece of clothing for the umptieth time that day. Or more like by how good it looked on Ryan.
And if Shane thought (or hoped, because he was barely getting any work done with Ryan walking around like that) this one shirt would be the end of it, he was so very wrong. Ryan started wearing tie-dye clothing more often from then on. Shirts, tank tops, shorts, even that white baseball cap Ryan used to wear all the time got dressed in pretty pastels.
It got to the point of Ryan wearing something tie-dye every single day and Shane’s not gonna lie, it was driving him a little crazy. He would’ve never thought someone could look so attractive in things that were admittedly often a little too much and very out there. Ryan pulled it off beautifully, though. Well, Shane might have been a little biased, ultimately it wasn’t the rainbows of his shirts that brought out his attraction towards Ryan.
It’s been there for a long time, always on the back burner. It was even easy to ignore sometimes. Shane’s a man of logic, and he wouldn’t want to ask Ryan out and ruin things between them now, would he? They had a lot to lose, so much at stake, like their friendship, Unsolved… He couldn’t risk it. It was the best course of action, just ignore it and it will fade with time, he thought.
That is, until the goddamn tie-dye video.
Shane could only take about a week and a half of seeing Ryan in those clothes, he’s human after all, and curiosity was fucking killing him at that point. Not to mention the fact he just had to address the “issue” in some way before he’d break and push Ryan against a wall and rips one of those stupid shirts off of him, kissing him senseless. Well, that’s perhaps a bit of an overreaction, but Shane was truly at the end of his rope.
“Alright, I haven’t said anything so far, but what’s with the tie-dye lately?” Shane broke the silence of them working at their shared desks one morning. Ryan looked up from his research, seemingly caught off-guard. And fuck, is that the start of a blush he saw? Ryan took a moment to answer, shrugging the question off and suddenly very interested in his empty coffee cup.
“I may or may not have gone a little crazy on the tie-dye.” He admitted, sheepishly, almost shyly and Shane took absolute delight in those few seconds.
“A little?” he snorted, the usual teasing tilt to his voice wasn’t missing either and Ryan was already rolling his eyes. “I haven’t seen you in anything else for a week now!”
“Shut up, dude, it’s- it’s nice, okay? The process of it, it’s relaxing.” He crossed his arms in front of the swirly blue patterns of that day’s tank top, defensively. Shane almost got distracted by the flex of his arms, but he quickly focused his attention back on Ryan’s face as his expression melted into a soft smile.
He knows when he needs to drop the teasing when something is clearly important to Ryan, it must be a nice hobby for him, a distraction from all the stress that comes with the research, and the editing.
“It’s cool, Ry. I was just wondering, you know. How many shirts have you done? And other stuff, going by your outfits this week.” Shane added, relieved when Ryan relaxed back into his chair, his usual smile was back on his face in no time.
“As I said, I have gone a little crazy with it. I made like… Twenty T-shirts? Approximately. And some pillowcases and other stuff too. Let’s just say I don’t own any white clothing anymore.” He laughed and continued, “I might as well wear the ones that turned out good, I guess.” He shrugged again, one hand going up to rub at the back of his neck.
“That is- that is so much. You really enjoy doing it, huh? I mean I thought you were really good at it, to be honest.”
“Yeah, thanks,” Ryan said softly, and there was something in his eyes, his smile that would’ve made Shane’s knees weak if he wasn’t sitting already. “It’s fun to do but now I don’t know what to do with most of them. I ought to stop wearing tie-dye every single day, but it’s starting to take over my closet.”
“Did you think about giving it to co-workers? They like them an awful lot. Or even better, selling them! You could do Unsolved themed shirts, the fans would be over the moon about them.”
“You’re- you’re actually right. I mean I gave some pillowcases and such to my family, they like them. I don’t know. Do you think the viewers would like it too?”
“They’d adore it, Ryan, trust me.”
“They like your stupid hot dog show, they would buy my hippy shirts too, you’re right.” There was a shit-eating grin that slowly spread on Ryan’s face and just like that, they were back to the usual teasing.
“I’m trying to be a supportive friend, and this is what I get. Frankly, I’m hurt and offended you’d speak in such a way of my beloved show.”
“God, you’re- you’re such an idiot.” It was said with such fondness, Shane’s chest ached with it.
“I’m not calling you out, you look really good in them actually. All the colors, they- they suit you a lot.” He quietly broke the silence that settled on them once again.
“You think so?” Ryan couldn’t help his bright grin, and fuck, just like that, Shane was gone. His heart was beating faster than he would ever admit, he’s amazed he could even put together a sentence, two even.
“Would you like to teach me? How to do it properly.”
“Sure, dude. You can come to my place after work.”
It was Shane’s turn to smile, that small, soft one he gives Ryan with sometimes when he’s not looking. And before he could make his brain to mouth filter function properly, he blurted “It’s a date then.”
His eyes widened, in a way that probably looked pretty comical and he opened his mouth, ready to explain himself somehow, but Ryan cut him off before he even made a sound.
“It’s a date, big guy.” He practically beamed at Shane again, in that special way that’s just for him, no one else.
There was absolutely no excuse for the way his heart missed a beat, but for once, Shane wasn’t looking for one.
