#I think the idea is that he's not actually surprised WWX didn't know

I also think JC tortured at least some people and don't really care, but also you have a lot of people very confidently asserting a bunch things that I guess he theoretically could have done but has no evidence. "Aha, so you admit that he brutally tortured families for months in his dungeons and made parents watch their children slowly starve to death in front of them before he beat them to death with their own spinal cords and uses the blood to dye his robes" WHO SAID THAT???
Yeah it's. JGY fan solidarity! People will absolutely just make shit up and assert it's canon. It's infuriating.

I have some Thoughts about xue yang (surprise!) and specifically the possibility that he didn't get picked up by the jin because he was already deeply steeped in demonic cultivation but because, if you're looking for someone to do unethical demonic cultivation experiments for you, it makes sense to choose someone (a) of questionable morals, (b) without previous ties to anyone else and (c) who is expendable and disposable if anything goes wrong.
the information we have about xue yang's life, stripped of interpretation, between chang incident and the villainous friends extra is as follows (all quotes either from the ExR or FanYiYi translations):
as a teenager, he gained a reputation in Kuizhou for being "inhumane" and "merciless" (and having a "radiant smile" but that's not pertinent at the moment)
the jin invited him to become a guest disciple
he was one of many demonic cultivators that jin guangshan gathered (and the best)
he was able to restore the yin tiger seal* for the jin sect
he was recommended by jin guangyao
so the presumption I think is generally that he was doing demonic cultivation prior to his being brought on by the jin sect, since he's described as one of the people who "imitated wei wuxian in cultivating the demonic path" that jin guangshan acquires, which would suggest the typical interpretation. however, I wonder if it's a little of both: hire on an aggressive young man with a bad reputation who's done a bit of dabbling and encourage that focus.
and it's not so much that I'm saying that, like, xue yang wouldn't do demonic cultivation without encouragement (I think he would) or that he was resistant to the idea (I think he was thrilled, we see his reaction to getting a few of wwx's notes), but I just do have thoughts about how it's not even just that xue yang is expendable in the long run in terms of I think the expectation being that as soon as he wasn't an asset anymore he could be safely (and advantageously) purged**. it's also that even as an asset he's still disposable, because if he can't handle the demonic cultivation he's doing and dies or goes insane (and dies), well. no big loss.
and then thinking about how I am absolutely sure xue yang is aware of this. and again: it's not like xue yang agrees with the general assessment of what he's worth. but I don't think he's completely unaffected by knowing he's the only one who doesn't agree with it, either.***
*on rereading, really wondering how much this was public knowledge and if so how it became that way! lan wangji treats it like something that's a known connection but it sort of surprises me that jin guangshan would be down with it being public knowledge that he's fucking around with wei wuxian's evil weapon.
**regardless of what you think about jin guangyao's actually intending to kill xue yang vs. letting him go and someone else getting to him, I very much doubt jin guangshan was planning on keeping him around for the long haul.
***the determination to value oneself highly in the face of a world that continually indicates that you're worthless is a thing I think about a lot when it comes to xue yang.

SangCheng Fanfic Rec List
This list is definitely not exhaustive, I'm sure there's some I've forgotten because I neglected to put them in my bookmarks. I just dug around in there and tried to make it a little diverse and covering different authors.
I'm trying to word this post in a way that it doesn't get flagged, so please also mind the tags on the fics.
Sorted by word count, starting with the short ones.
the strangest, dampest embrace by Anbessette
Rating: teen and up
tags: crack treated seriously, shapeshifting, squid!NHS, friends to lovers, interspecies romance, Cloud Recesses study arc
POV: WWX
word count: 3.020
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: canon divergence
summary: Squid Yao Nie Huaisang is learning to shift into human form. Jiang Cheng is having the weirdest 'oh no my friend got hot' crisis in teenage history.
personal opinion on the fic: This sounds ridiculous, I know. And it kind of is. And it's also... kinda cute? This one fic is rather short, but it's the start of a series. Other fics of this series are rated explicit and with NHS being a squid, you can decuce what that means...
dark water by Morgan (duckwhatduck)
Rating: explicit
notable tags: drinking, loneliness, lots of feelings but no talking about them, hopeful ending
POV: JC
word count: 7.055
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: in universe
summary: Sect Leader Jiang invites the freshly appointed Sect Leader Nie into his chambers to have a drink, and it leads to more.
personal opinion on the fic: This is basically pwp, but filled with emotions. JC discovers, in a way, his sub nature, but he's also an emotional mess, and while NHS keeps it together more, he's also not 100% confident and in control - and this is actually one of the aspects I like about this, it feels much more authentic like this.
He's no bully, he's my friend by JaimeBlue
Rating: General audiences
notable tags: homelessness, dog!Jiang Cheng, unspecified city, , podfic available
POV: NHS
word count: 8.976
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: urban fantasy/modern cultivators AU
summary: Nie Huaisang has been living on the streets for almost two years since his brother's death, just trying to get by despite the 'things' he sees that scare him, though nobody else can see them - it's been that way since he was a boy. Then one day he chases some kids away from harassing an injured pit bull, and he finds in the dog a friend and partner in surviving life on the streets. But there is more to his dog than meets the eye, and maybe the companion he'd saved might just save him in return.
personal opinion on the fic: This fic is different. First of all, there's not much romance in it, just a hint of SangCheng at the end. Not surprising since Jiang Cheng spends most of this fic as a dog. So it's NHS-centric, too. It's very heartwrenching, but also sweet and hopeful (and I'm not even a dog-person).
the cold read by offlight
Rating: teen and up
notable tags: fake/pretend relationship, drunk making out, set in USA
POV: JC
word count: 12.022
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: college/university AU
summary: JC is annoyed by WWX constantly going on about his relationships, while he never had one. NHS comes up with the seemingly brilliant idea to start fake dating; for not entirely unselfish reasons.
personal opinion on the fic: It's a cute, fluffy fake relationship fic. Maybe things go a little too smooth overall, but sometimes you're just in the mood for that. However I do think the anger directed at JC towards the end is a little unfair; he genuinly didn't realize. There's a hot little drunk make-out scene in the middle, that doesn't go too far (so the teen rating is still correct, in my opinion).
the light of autumn by crooows
Rating: general
tags: canon compliant, hurt/comfort, talking, drinking, angst with a happy ending
POV: JC, NHS
word count: 13.845
chapter count: 5
status: completed
AU or in universe: in universe, post-canon
summary: Nie Huaisang arrives a week early for the conference which will be held in Yunmeng to discuss the position of chief cultivator.
personal opinion on the fic: This is a short one, so you can't expect a long built up and maybe the big "oh!" realization comes a little too fast. But the story shows both of them broken in ways that make them understand each other, and they're so sweet and cute together. Haha, that poor Jiang disciple.
Lights, Camera, Kiss by MissMagus
Rating: explicit
notable tags: 5+1 Things, dom/sub, brief Nie Huaisang/Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji, bottom Nie Huaisang, service top Jiang Cheng, top drop, (plus a few other tags for the "movie" they're filming)
POV: NHS
word count: 15.377
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: adult entertainment industry AU
summary: When Nie Huaisang gets paired with straight Jiang Cheng for a five-part series, he’s sure it will be an utter disaster. Until the cameras start rolling and their chemistry alights like wildfire.
personal opinion on the fic: Alright, this is pretty much pwp; most of it is set during filming. Also this is of course most probably not in any way representative of the real industry. My favourite things about this is how the whip was incorporated (not done enough, imo) and the top drop JC experiences, something I've never read before.
Just Let Me Stay Here by Your Side, That Would Be Enough by xcourtney_chaoticx
Rating: teen and up
notable tags: friends to lovers, arranged marriage, canonical character death, post-traumatic stress disorder - PTSD, non-sexual intimacy, Jiujiu content, OCs
POV: NHS
word count: 15.822
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: canon divergence
summary: In the wake of the Sunshot Campaign and the sworn brotherhood of Nie Mingjue, Lan Xichen, and Jin Guangyao, it is decided that Nie Huaisang should be married into the Yunmeng Jiang. He is married to Jiang Cheng.
personal opinion on the fic: Sweet, fluffy slow-burn arranged marriage - sometimes you just need something like this. (Ok, maybe not always only fluffy, some of the dark things of canon still happen and there's the PTSD tag...)
Neutral Territory by Pyrria
Rating: mature
notable tags: movie violence, everyone lives/nobody dies, no Golden Core transfer, gangsters, bar/pub setting, drinking
POV: NHS
word count: 19.185
chapter count: 2
status: completed
AU or in universe: cyberpunk AU
summary: A series of conversations between Nie Huaisang, the overlooked, underestimated, playboy younger brother of the former leader of the Qinghe gang and Jiang Wanyin, a lowtek bar owner who knows more than he should and is connected to some very dangerous people. Is Jiang Wanyin someone Nie Huaisang can trust as he tries to unravel the attempt on his brother's life? Or is he one of the many moving pieces acting against Qinghe? If he's already fallen, does it even matter?
personal opinion on the fic: I really like the idea of the loss of a Golden Core being changed into not having cybernetic implants. I love the description of the AR technological world contrasted with the "old-fashioned" real worldness of JCs bar - it makes me wish I could actually see this (as film, animation, whatever). Plus it's always nice to have some uncle/nephew interaction and Nie Zonghui included. Yay for family. The mature rating is for the violence that the whole gang theme includes; I'm really bad with gore and violence and such but it hardly bothers me, so I'm sure most others will be fine.
a loving kind of boy by artsy_alice
Rating: teen and up
notable tags: tooth-rotting fluff, coming out, Jiang Cheng and puppies, 5+1 Things, childhood friends getting together, asexual Jiang Cheng, minor WangXian
POV: mixed, it's a bit chaotic (but it works out)
word count: 19.740
chapter count: 7
status: completed
AU or in universe: modern cultivators AU
summary: Or, 5 Times Nie Huaisang Comforts Jiang Cheng Through the Power of Cuddles, Heart-to-Hearts and Cute Animals, and the 1 Time it was the Other Way Around
personal opinion on the fic: I love the world-building in this. It's basically a collection of scenes from their lives, so there's not much development or plot or anything, and the SangCheng just kinda happens, so don't expect big romantiv events. Make sure to check out the author's social media accounts, though, because there's lots of cute art from this AU.
bright sunlight filtered by givemebaretrees
Rating: explicit
notable tags: arranged marriage, hopeful ending
POV: JC
word count: 20.175
chapter count: 1
status: completed
AU or in universe: canon/in universe
summary: Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang are arranged to marry each other by Jiang Fengmian and Madame Yu, which seems to make everyone happy—up until Wei Wuxian's life is changed by the Sunshot Campaign. Jiang Cheng is left to pick up the pieces of every broken promise his brother left behind, and some of his own, too.
personal opinion on the fic: I really like how the story weaves itself between the events we all know; it mentions them but doesn't do any unnecessary retelling. JC and NHS slowly dance around each other, getting closer, and then again further away. I kind of wished the NSFW part was a little expanded, then again it also fits like this.
Four Days in Lanling by halotolerant
Rating: explicit
notable tags: first time, mastermind!Nie Huaisang, grief/mourning, drunkenness, podfic available
POV: JC
word count: 21.020
chapter count: 6
status: completed
AU or in universe: in universe, partly post-canon
summary: During his first Cultivaton Conference as clan leader, NHS does some scheming that doesn't directly pay for his masterplan, and after the events at Guanyin temple, JC begs him to help his nephew again. And maybe also something else that happened between them can be rekindled, too.
personal opinion on the fic: The fic treads a fine line in making JC the oblivious and inexperienced and passive one; this could go very wrong - but it doesn't. He does have his expertise and he's growing into his role. They both have their obvious traumas and weaknesses, too. I do love how clever NHS is in this, it's a joy to watch how he manipulates and no ones notices.
Heart opening flow by gekidasa
Rating: teen and up
notable tags: yoga, college/university, background WangXian, awkward boners, jealous!JC, established NieLan
POV: JC
word count: 27.002
chapter count: 10
status: completed
AU or in universe: modern AU
summary: Jiang Cheng agrees to do a class at Cloud Recesses Yoga as a favor to Wei Wuxian. He was only planning to go once, but then Nie Huaisang walks into the class, and Jiang Cheng is immediately smitten. Unbeknownst to Jiang Cheng, the feeling is entirely mutual.
personal opinion on the fic: This is one of those fics where clearly the author pours in much knowledge about their interest. There's reference pics for yoga poses and all (it's pretty advanced yoga, though, so don't try this at home). NHS tries his hardest with flirting, but he is up against JCs insecurities. They dance around each other for a bit, but it's so sweet. It's seperated very conveniently into short chapters.
A Sweet and Vicious Cycle by Kendershire
Rating: explicit
notable tags: sugar baby/sugar daddy, emotional manipulation, pretend relationship, scheming Nie Huaisang, protective Jiang Cheng, panic attacks, terrible Jiang parents, demisexual!Jiang Cheng
POV: NHS
word count: 37.192
chapter count: 12
status: in progress
AU or in universe: modern AU
summary: After his life was upended and his brother incarcerated, NHS has to make a living with a generally disdained job - and uses it for his carefully planned revenge scheme. He intends to use his childhood friend for his means, too; but it doesn't quite go as planned.
personal opinion on the fic: The JC in this fic is what all those rude young CEOs in Asian dramas should be and never are. He's so noble that it'd be easy to condemn NHS for what he is doing, if it wasn't obvious that NHS is not unaffected. I so love the idea of the Crisis Blanket! Everyone should have one. This fic is not completed and has slow updates, but it's not abandoned.
perfect pretenders by skyestiel

POV: NHS, WWX, JC, LWJ alternating
word count: 60.549
chapter count: 15
status: completed
AU or in universe: in universe, canon-divergence
summary: During a drunken get-together, wei Wuxian has the glorious idea of a kissing competition between him, JC and NHS. Later, and still drunk, JC has the equally glorious idea that him and NHS could outdo WWx with the help of - each other.
personal opinion on the fic: Yay, Gusu times trio/quartet content! Happy innocent youth. I love all their interactions, I can very well picture them like this. It's so cute, but also sensual - I think chapter 5 has to be one of my favourite SangCheng content.
Shorelines in the Moonlight by Emrysian
Rating: teen and up (but there is an outsourced NSFW scene that has an explicit rating)
tags: hurt/comfort, suicidal ideation, Junior Quartet, qi deviation/unrest, loneliness, anxiety, slow burn, angst with a happy ending, family feels, JL/LSZ, healing, relapse
POV: alternating (JC, LWJ, JL, LSZ...)
word count: 62.854
chapter count: 27
status: completed
AU or in universe: in universe, post-canon
summary: A year after the events at Guanyin Temple, everyone seems to be moving on with their lives and learning how to live as they are. That is, until Sect Leader Nie's health is brought into question at a Discussion Conference, and soon everyone realizes that there are some things that have yet to be addressed. Grief takes many forms. What happens to those who are left behind?
personal opinion on the fic: Completely self-indulgent, but I love how everyone starts worrying about NHS. He even gets those infamous hugs from JC - since CQL this is something I'm jealous of. I love how the juniors crush on NHS, it's so cute and also hilarious. The time everyone spends together in Qinghe at the festival and in Lotus Pier, is so sweet to read with its family feels and budding love... Not everything goes smooth, though, there's a little more realistic approach to healing.
Come Go With Me by roseclaw
Rating: explicit
notable tags: set in USA, therapy, moving away from family, surfing, chronic pain, mentions of a being in a car accident and witnessing death (chapter 13), yunmeng sib feels, accidental kitten acquisition, small town vibes, lots of food preparing, house renovation, lots of ogling, making friends
POV: JC
word count: 102.289
chapter count: 15
status: completed
AU or in universe: modern AU
summary: Six years after he was in a car accident that killed his parents and left him with hardware in his knee and chronic pain, former competitive surfer Jiang Cheng quits city life, takes his parents’ inheritance, and buys a dilapidated inn on the ocean to fix up.
personal opinion on the fic: Everyone is mentioned in this fic, seriously, everyone, including Zonghui; there's kittens and even Wang Yizhou's thigh tattoo gets a mention, too. Personally I think that JC (often very relatable) and NHS (who stays mysterious throughout) feel a little OOC, though it may only be the vastly different setting. I do love the setting. I don't know a thing about the area in which this is set nor the surfing community, but it has a certain atmosphere I really like coming back to. (Somebody do a mood board?) The relationship between the siblings is really well done. When I first read this, my mother had a knee surgery, so a lot in this sounds familiar, especially how a lot of things that are normal to others are out of the question, and how overdoing it on good days can easily lead to bad days.
we both know better (maybe we don't) by captain_apostrophe
Rating: explicit
notable tags: fake/pretend relationship, demisexual!Jiang Cheng, slow burn, rich families, nobody is dead, background WangXian, occasional smut (often XueSang), Jiujiu content, robbery, sexuality exploration, angst and hurt/comfort, terrible Jiang parents, family dynamics, childhood trauma, non-sexual intimacy, divorce, skip codes for explicit content
POV: NHS, JC alternating
word count: 281.873
chapter count: 56
status: on hiatus
AU or in universe: modern AU
summary: NHS was hired to paint a mural on WWXs pizzeria wall but then WWX has another job for him: be the fake date for his very attractive brother to get people off his back about marriage and kids. The problem is that WWX didn't inform JC of his plan - and it goes how you might expect it to; or even worse. But since the worst damage seems to already been done, JC decides "why not" and the deal is on until WWXs wedding.
personal opinion on the fic: The "JC is a martial arts instructor" content you didn't know you needed. NHS is so thirsting over JC in this, and he's taking us all on that trip with him. The growing casual intimacy between them is so lovely to read (I'm a little jealous, really). I was a little worried about the addition of an OC to the family, but it works. The big "oh!" moment is so cheesy, so tropey - and so, so good. There are a couple of flaws. Sometimes it tries too desperately to be woke, like there's some secret plan to squeeze in a whole modern sex ed curriculum, to the point that it feels like in school books when the authors try to put some kind of story around a math problem (in this case the other way around) but it ends up being awkward. The demisexuality of JC is really well done; some other parts not that much, in my opinion. The more obvious problem is of course the current status. I'm not surprised, it had this vibe the last couple of chapters... But if you don't mind the uncertain future, do read. Or you could always stop after chapter 42.

I love how sure they are that JC is able to connect these dots. Like I’m sure he was very convinced that every demonic cultivator is WWX incorporated yet still went to look for more of them. Almost like… he doesn’t have any idea what he’s doing and is simply lashing out because of anger issues *pickachu face*
I’m so sick of this fandom but the fanarts are too cute to not look into the tag
Lol "it's certainly the explanation I prefer" - yes I'm sure... lol 🌝
I've seen jc stans drag this poor scene, and the idea that jc doesn't run around publicly accusing MXY of being WWX over and over as "proof" that jc still cares about WWX's wellbeing like he's not doing what he usually does- nothing helpful. Like he didn't try to kidnap and torture him TWICE already and only didn't manage to fully follow through because others intervened. Like the siege was going to end in anything other than the annihilation of WWX and the Wens. Let's be serious. jc didn't want to stand by WWX and help the Wens when all it would have taken was him admitting what WQ and WN did for him and maybe dealing w some grumbling. He was going to suddenly face off against all the gathered Clans big and small?!! He didn't just LEAD the siege he strategized it! WWX plays down jc's involvement bc that's what WWX does when it comes to the jiangs and other people harming him. You can tell how much Wen Ning believes him. Wen Ning understands that no matter if the actual killing blow came from jc or not he's the one responsible for WWX's demise.
Wen Ning finally looked up at him, “But, Sect Leader Jiang clearly…”
Wei WuXian, “Nobody can walk safely on a single-plank bridge for their whole life. It couldn’t be helped.”
Wen Ning seemed as if he wanted to sigh, but he had no breath to let out. Wei WuXian ended the conversation, “Okay. Let’s not talk about him anymore. Have you heard of anything else?”
jc himself knows MXY is WWX from his reaction to Fairy but there are several very good reason jiang cheng doesn't accuse the man accompanying the Leader of the Lan Clan and Hanguang Jun of being the Yiling Patriarch come back to like.
1. as Jin Ling says, jc already hit WWX w Zidian in front of an entire crowd of people from various Clans and failed to expel his soul, decisively publicly proving that he wasn't the Yiling Laozu come back to haunt them- which is what WWX intended:
One unique power of “Zidian” was that, if it hit someone who seized another’s body, their soul and physical form would immediately separate. Without any exceptions, the person’s soul would be whipped away from the body. Yet, Wei WuXian was still moving properly and running about after he was hit. The only explanation was that he did not seize this body.
Wei Wuxian thought, How useless. Obviously Zidian can’t whip my soul out. I didn’t steal this body, someone offered it to me. Actually, he practically forced it on me!
Jiang Cheng’s expression was surprised but suspicious, and the intention to whip Wei Wuxian again crossed his eyes.
But Lan Jingyi shouted, “Chief Jiang, isn’t once enough? This is Zidian!”
A cultivation tool the level of Zidian wouldn’t fail on the first try only to succeed on the second. If no soul was expelled, no soul was expelled. If someone hadn’t snatched the body, they hadn’t snatched the body, or else the weapon was undeserving of its reputation. In fact, the shout made Jiang Cheng, who cared about maintaining his reputation above anything else, unable to make another move. (Chapter 10)
Yet another person muttered, “No matter how you look at it, it isn’t him, right?…Plus, his flute playing is awful…he hasn’t really learned to play, only to make ridiculous, shoddy imitations.” (Chapter 10)
2. Everyone thinks jiang cheng is a mad dog who thinks he sees WWX returned everywhere. Most would probably not take his word as conclusive to begin with LET ALONE believe him after the former incident.
Everyone in the cultivation world knew that the young leader of the Jiang Clan watched out for Wei WuXian in an almost crazed manner. He would rather catch the wrong person than let go of any possibility, and took anyone who seemed like they held the soul of Wei WuXian away to the YunmengJiang Sect, inflicting severe torture on his victim. (Chapter 11)
Jin GuangYao, “You really ask me to do the impossible, Young Master Xue. Do you think I haven’t tried? How could anything be that simple. That Jiang WanYin has already gone mad. He still thinks Wei WuXian hasn’t died. If Wei WuXian returned, he might not search for his sword, but he’d definitely come for Chenqing. And so, he would definitely not give up Chenqing. A few more words of mine, and he might blow up.”
Xue Yang sniggered, “A mad dog.” (Villainous Friends extra)
3. Wei Wuxian literally explains why jiang cheng doesn't have a leg to stand on when it comes to accusing him!
The two walked in the front while the rest of the boys followed some distance behind them. After walking for a while, Lan WangJi spoke up, “Jiang Cheng knows who you are.”
Wei WuXian was sitting on the donkey as it slowly trotted forward, “Yeah, he knows. What can he do, though? He doesn’t have any evidence.”
Unlike the possession of bodies, there was no evidence to the sacrifice of bodies. Jiang Cheng only determined the fact through how he looked when facing a dog, anyway. First, Jiang Cheng had never told anyone that Wei WuXian was afraid of dogs; second, only those familiar with him would be able to judge things based on reactions and expressions, since there couldn’t be any conclusive proof. Even if Jiang Cheng finally chose to stick flyers that said the YiLing Patriarch Wei WuXian was scared of dogs everywhere he could, everyone would probably just think that the Sandu Shengshou had gone insane after spending so many years hunting down innocents on suspicion of being Wei Wuxian. (chapter 45)
SO jc did nothing to hinder them because he couldn't and nothing useful because he wouldn't. But jc had done his best to craft Jin Ling into someone as filled with anger resentment and hate as himself and making sure Jin Ling hates WWX enough that he feels compelled to stab him - something we know is out of character for JL and that he ends up regretting. And something that could have ended in tragedy.

I'm surprised that there's such a strong consensus that Jiang Fengmian was totally irredeemable as a parent. Like, was he perfect? No. Did his behavior contribute to a lot of Jiang Cheng’s issues? Certainly. Was he the father JC needed? Probably not. But I would really contest the idea that he was a god-awful father who openly favored Wei Wuxian and didn’t love JC.
Disclaimer: these are all just my opinions. Obviously JFm can be interpreted as he popularly is, I'm just surprised it's so widely accepted as the One Truth.
When I watched the show, JFm struck me as generally reserved, gentle, forgiving, and passive. In his scenes with WWx and JC, both the narrative and his actor's choices indicate to me that he regards them with quiet pride and affection. I mean, when WWx and JC return to Lotus Pier after running off to do who-knows-what, he doesn’t scold them or even look angry. He’s not interested in punishing them, he only wants to know if they had a safe journey. And I do mean they – both WWx and JC – because he's addressing them both and pretty much does treat them the same way, as he does in most of the trio's scenes together. There are only two differences in his treatment of them throughout the show that I can see.
JFm is obviously portrayed as having a stronger connection with WWx. They have more in common ideologically and personality-wise, and WWx embodies their sect’s teachings in a way that JC simply does not. JC also inherited his mother’s personality, and Yu Ziyuan is someone JFm struggles to get along with, despite how much he clearly cares about her. JC clearly notices that he has a weaker connection with JFm than WWx and is naturally hurt, but it’s not necessarily anyone’s fault. Some people just vibe with certain types over others, and this is true even within family units. In all but one of his scenes, it's not like JFm is excluding JC or otherwise neglecting him.
JFm corrects or reprimands JC more often than WWx. A few times, he says things along the lines of “watch what you say” to JC, but not to WWx. The thing is, JFm’s not wrong for correcting JC in this way, especially since saying things in anger is an established pattern with him. As a future sect leader and just as a person, JC should learn to speak thoughtfully and tactfully. I’m also inclined to accept WWx’s argument that JFm is less strict with him because he’s not going to become sect leader (meaning he doesn’t need to be held to a higher standard) and because he’s not actually JFm’s kid. This is a great way to inspire feelings of inequality and insecurity in children, but I don’t think JFm has to be interpreted as malicious or negligent because of this behavior. He’s simply not perfect.
In addition to this, while these two problems are present in several of the scenes JFm has with WWx and JC, there are really only two scenes I can point to where JFm unambiguously messed up.
The dinner scene. JFm sits the Yunmeng trio down for dinner, YZy swoops in, makes everyone feel terrible about themselves, and accuses JFm of favoring Cangse-sanren over herself and therefore of favoring WWx over JC. JFm does… practically nothing. He doesn’t try very hard to stop or contradict her. This passivity allows YZy to hit everyone right in their sore spots.
The sickbed scene. WWx has just woken up after passing out in Lotus Pier. JFm praises WWx’s accomplishments and coldly ignores JC. JC scolds WWx for playing hero by... helping his allies in a battle that he didn't even start?? JFm tries to explain to his son why this is a no-good perspective to have, then, when told that JC didn’t mean it, tells him that he still can’t say whatever just because he’s angry. YZy comes in to pick a fight, JFm once again fails to do anything about it, and JC concludes that JFm hates him. If we take the scene as it is, this whole interaction was very uncool of JFm. He was cold to the point of hostility towards his son and should have done more to dispute the accusations YZy was throwing at him. But the thing is, it feels out of character for the JFm of earlier appearances to glare at and ignore JC just because WWx acknowledged his accomplishments. It kind of feels like the writers sacrificed character consistency to frame JFm as the bad guy in that scene. Besides that, JC was 100% in the wrong when he scolded WWx and he deserved to be corrected. Whether he meant what he said or was just venting anger, he was in the wrong.
It's easy to see how his parents' behavior fed JC's fears and insecurities, and I think people tend to take YZy’s claims of favoritism at face value at least in part because JFm doesn’t do much to correct her. It's taken as an indication that JFm doesn’t correct her because he can’t, because she’s right. I interpret it more like he's so incredulous or so sick of having the same arguments that he just waits for them to blow over. This clearly causes lots of problems, but it also doesn't make JFm an uncaring or irredeemable father.
In fact, I think it's frankly unlikely that he's uncaring towards JC or that their relationship is all bad. I think it's telling that, in their scenes together, JC is unusually gentle towards JFm and doesn't put up that prickly front like he usually does.
So yeah. I interpret JFm and JC’s relationship to be more along the lines of “bad communication worsened by difficult circumstances and clashing personalities” than “terrible father to unfavored son”.

The Untamed, episode 48 - watching notes
I've got more tissues prepared because Yunmeng bro feelings always hit me HARD and that's where I left off last time
I find it kinda sweet that lwj is defending Wen Ning
It makes so much sense for Jiang Cheng to immediately bring up his old resentment cor the way his father treated then up. It really all goes back to that. The feeling of being always second best, both to his father in comparison to wwx and to wwx in comparison to lwj. And while wwx sacrificed his core because he thought of himself as inferior to Jiang cheng (not in skill but in worth), to Jiang Cheng it comes off as him once more playing the hero :/
All in all THESE IDIOTS NEVER LEARNED TO PROPERLY COMMUNICATE
Also the way Jiang cheng says "then what am I?" Reminds me a lot of the way he grieved for his core
You know what fucked me up most during this whole conversation?
Tumblr media
Because that's it. He can't! 😭
He still loves wei Wuxian and he can't understand why wwx never chose him. Why he chose to protect lwj and the wens when he knew it would endanger their clan. And from that perspective, I get it. I feel like to Jiang Cheng, his clan is everything. It's only natural. He is the (future) clan leader and he was raised that way. It was always going to be his responsibility and at the same time, he always had this very clear cut role in their society.
But wei Wuxian? He loved their family and he did feel at home at their clan, but he was still very much an outsider. Madam Yu hated him, people kept calling him a servant when it suited them and told him to mind his place as such when he spoke up. He could emphasize with the outcasts of society because he himself never truly left that outsider status behind either!
Which left him and Jiang Cheng in opposing positions with no way of understanding the other's point of view
... while still loving each other
😭
Because all they were in the beginning, was two boys being brothers 😥
Which leads me to the conclusion that, once more, the true enemy of this story isn't any single person, it's society.
Okay, sorry that this essentially turned into meta. That's probably not what you're here for, but as thus show comes to an end, I have FEELINGS and THOUGHTS and I need to get them out 😅
I have another rant in my head on whether or not I think wwx was right in transferring Jiang Cheng his ckre without telling him, but I'm holding that in for now 🙈
That I'm sorry. From BOTH of them. 😭
THAT'S GROWTH!!! 😭😭😭
Wei Wuxian saying that it's all in the past now made me cry. So. Much. Because it's an ending. It sounded to me like he wanted to wipe the slate clean. No promises. No betrayals. Start anew. And ... I'm not okay 💔😥
Hey Nie Huaisang. Welcome to the party :D
Um ... what's happening?
Are they ... burning?
Jin Guangyao played with fire and got burned or what kind of metaphor is this?
I'd be about as good as nie Huaisang at hiding my reaction in that situation, tbh ^^
This is the weirdest hostage situation I have ever seen, with everybody just running around sind no one even guarding the hostages
The hell is in that tomb? 😳
Wait ... nie Mingjue was the headless corpse? And okay, the head is obviously seen back on here but ... how did it get there so quickly and WHY is Jin Guangyao surprised?? Wasn't he in possession of the head??
I.am.confused
Poor Huaisang :'(
And poor Jin Ling. He's learning quickly just how fucked up his family is 😬
*dramatic thunder in the distance*
👆 favourite trope of mine :D
It's an oldie but a goodie
Wwx understands something I don't ^^
Tumblr media
Also nice to know that even when they're both without powers lwj will still protect his husband 🥰
Okay, so ... someone put the body there. The same somebody who orchestrated everything else
WHO??
Omg, I love how wwx plays at Jin Guangyao's paranoia by essentially manipulating him as he did others and then turns to lwj, with a little shrug and a half smile like
Tumblr media
CAN I PLEASE GET 50 EPISODES OF THESE TWO SOLVING MONSTER OF THE WEEK MYSTERIES TOGETHER? 😭
So they FINALLY thought it was a good idea to actually restrain their hostages. Genius!
Wait ... Su She has that hole curse, too?
OHHHH
He was the one who cursed Jin Zixun???
I hadn't even thought about the fact that that was still an unanswered question! 😱😱😱
Jgy telling wwx that they were always going to end up on opposite sides is SO interesting and betrays a level of self-awareness I would not have afforded this guy
The thing is, su she raging at lwj for this is really the wrong address. Not because what he says isn't at least partially right (lwj was born into privilege and there is a stark disparity in how clan disciples and peripheral disciples are treated), even in the lan clan, but not BY lan Wangji. He's the guy who knelt before his uncle and let himself, the sect leader's son, be punished alongside the servant's son.
It's fascinating to see Jin Guangyao's mask fall
And his view of wwx is even more fascinating
He deliberately used wwx status as an outsider to society in combination with his impulsive and righteous character to further his own agenda of setting his own status as an outsider
It's like the ULTIMATE Slytherin vs. Gryffindor story line 😁
Also SOCIETY IS THE VILLAIN!!!
I'm not gonna lie, Jin Guangyao nakes some good points. Not saying he's not a terrible person or that he's not responsible for his own actions, but still he's successfully identified a lot of systematic problems in the cultivation world 🤷‍♀️
... and then proceeded to horribly exploit them for his own benefit *sighs*
Very sneaky, Wei Ying. I don't know what you're doing it, but good job getting him to keep talking
Tumblr media
Xichen really be regretting all his life choices right now
It breaks my heartba bot, knowing that they really did bond that first time they met. And Xichen believed in him ever since 🥺
As sorry as I feel for him, I'm pretty sure it's going to get worse 🙈
OH MY GOD WWX CAN CONTROL GHOSTS BY WHISTLING ALONE NOW?
That is simultaneously SO cool and SO creepy! 😱
And kinda hot
On a related note, I realized that wwx is basically a Necromancer Bard and now I really wanna play one
Ohhh, the sword ghost!
😳
Isn't Xichen without powers right now?
No!!!
Puh, su she didn't kill him
But now I'm confused how lwj can use his powers
Ohhh
He's got the stygian tiger amulet?
I'm missing some crucial bit of plot here because I fo not know how he could have gotten it
I mean ... Xue Yang had half of it right? So ... is it this piece?
Tumblr media
HE PLANNED THE WHOLE THING ALREADY BACK THEN??? 😱
Or ... not the whole thing? I feel I'll have to watch the show again just to discover what Jin Guangyao even knew and when 🙈
The way jgy looks at Xichen, there us real affection and regret in his gaze :(
Still I did not see THIS coming
Tumblr media
He does care for Xichen, doesn't he? Who always saw the best in him. Never once treated him as below him for who his mother was.
But I dont think lan Xichen will give him a second chance right now, tbh. Just from the way he acted, he looked like his trust was irreparably shattered 😥
Meanwhile...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wwx is tired of your monologueing :D
I apologise for the weird mix of stream-of-cosciousness musings and half-formed meta musings 😅
Also all the typos ...
(And who sent the letter and hit the body??? 😭)
@sweetlittlevampire @fandom-glazed @elenirlachlagos @allhailthedramallama @luckymoony @kyrrahbird @i-love-him-on-purpose
Tomorrow I'll watch the jast two episodes and ... I can't quite believe it 😔
I'm just happy that I'm reading the book now and still got so much to look forward to there, otherwise I think l might draw out this show even longer

Hey!
I NEED a post-seclusion fic, where JC frequents CR a bit more, partially cause of sect business, partially for his brother (which he will deny) and for LXC (be ignored all the improper thoughts as to why that excited him. It's not like it will ever happen. HE was his soulmate, not JC)
But then at some point his and some of the older Lan disciplines are acting weird, so weird in fact LXC has to make them explain themselves. Defeated, they explain how they worked together to set LXC and JC up.
"The jiang disciplines know; that JC still holds LXC in high regard, even though he didn't invited him in the triad, when he is one of the 4 big sects, which many ppl outside the sect have taken and pointed out as a silent "the Jiang clan isn't good enough", furthering difficulty in becoming a respected sect again.
And the Lan disciples know, that LXC treated JC always with a SINCERN kindness, he doesn't show to just anyone, dispite how JC is widely seen as a ...not great person (much to the dispinces dismay).
They also realised, how much they have in commen, especially after .. Guanyin temple. Both sect leaders at a too young age, both had to rebuilt it, both had to raise a child, that wasn't theirs to raise etc. "
After that speech JC, LWJ, WWX and the Juniors stare in shock at the disciplines. To their their surprise LXC, having caught himself first, admits:
"This makes a surprising amount of sense actually. And I don't blame you for wanting what's best for your sect leaders."
To even more of a surprise LQR NODS and exclaims
"At least one of my nephews would marry well."
JC has to sit down. (He has to process that these disciplines, who have been on their side for all of this, LIKE HIM, that they also want something GOOD for him?!?! And that they think he deserves not only someone like LXC but LXC himself. And he doesnt disagree. AND NEITHER DOES LQR. What. the. fuck.)
LWJ sounds his disapproval but can't deny the logic, then drags a laughing WWX away. Jin Ling gives LXC a short " dont hurt him or else" speech, and leaves with the juniors . LQR nods once more in approval.
LXC and JC talk. About what was said. About where they are now. And where they could be ...
You obviously don't have to included the exact wording! I just like the idea of the lan and jiang disciplines, who have been by their side since their sect burned, ship them and get caught trying to set them up and LQR loving it.
I would be honoured if you would write this!
Thanks in advance !!
Me, on episode 11 of the show, trying to remember what all the place names and acronyms in this ask mean:
Tumblr media
Reasons why this idea is very powerful:
1. Multiple people wanting good things for Jiang Cheng
2. Idea of uptight Lan disciples secretly getting up to shipping shenanigans
Anyway I don’t know if I’ll end up having the time to write it, but thank you so much for your interest and this fun suggestion! I very rarely get fic-related asks so it was really exciting to read this one and imagine how it could work out. Maybe when I have more show knowledge...
Any of my followers who want to jump on this idea are more than welcome as far as I’m concerned.

(google translate again, yeah)
(I forgot to thank you for the last answer, I really didn't know that the drama used the music of my compatriot, it was a pleasant surprise for me)
I don't know if anyone has asked you this before, but do you think JC was good with WWX as a kid?
I mean not just their childhood, but the time of their training in Gusu.
I really love JC, and I understand perfectly well that he is the most dick in character, but I love him precisely during my studies at Gusu, I can not give any arguments that then JC was directly GOOD to WWX, but he is clearly cared a little about him and even ... worried? at least that moment after the punishment where JC helped WWX get to the room...
Yay - I'm so happy to hear about Stravinsky :)
Hahah loving jc as the dick that he is is the way to do it! go for it. :) also, sorry this was so delayed I wanted to reread the Cloud Recesses arc so it would be fresh in my mind before answering.
In terms of jc the Cloud Recesses arc is perhaps the most 'mellow' we see him aside from the Lotus Pod Extra but for me it's still impossible to find him a worthwhile person. I can already see the faults in his character that I know will only get worse as he grows older. Canonically I don't see how he would have any friends studying in the Cloud Recesses if he didn't come as a package deal w Wei Wuxian. I mean I doubt jiang cheng would have any friends without WWX period. In fact jiang cheng doesn't make any friends over the course of 13 years. He's also unable to find a wife bc of his temperament and behavior...
What we can glean about their relationship in the Cloud Recesses arc (and even the Lotus Pod Extra) is that any time WWX gets a kind word or understanding from someone, jiang cheng scoffs at it. Any time someone shits on WWX, jc is there to agree, to relish the idea of WWX being punished, and shit on him some more. He would be an immensely exhausting person to be around. He doesnt believe in WWX's ideas and ingenuity, (as NHS does for example), he doesn't believe WWX is hurt, he always assumes the worst of him, he doesn't believe LWJ might like WWX. The only thing he ever seems to believe is that WWX will dishonor YunmengJiang and that WWX should be punished. So for a kid who supposedly wants his father's approval so badly he instead constantly acts like his mother's mouthpiece/minion. He reprimands WWX like he's trying to become Madam Yu 2.0. I see jc stans all the time being like oh he had to keep WWX in check bc WWX was such a lOOooose canon, for the good of the Clan!! lol listen JFM didn't give a f...about WWX's behavior (in his letter to LQR) why are you so concerned? JFM would have preferred for jc to try & save his peers in the Xuanwu cave or at least to understand why that was the correct course of action rather than for him to just sit in front of the class in the Cloud Recesses and tell WWX off for giving LQR as good as he got, while actually still breaking the rules himself but eschewing punishment.
salt up here, quotes below :
Even when Nie Huaisang picks up on the fact that WWX is being treated unfairly by LQR, jc dismisses it and piles on WWX instead.
Nie Huaisang said, “Old Man Lan really seems like he’s coming down especially harshly on you. Every time he reprimands someone, it’s always you.” Jiang Cheng grunted. “He deserves it. What kind of answer was that? He can get away with saying that sort of nonsense at home, but he had the nerve to say it to Lan Qiren’s face. He was practically asking for the old man to kill him!”
But does WWX get away with ANYTHING in Lotus Pier? When we know he is punished constantly for EVERYTHING? This is jiang cheng fully being his mother's mouth piece. It's not something WWX would get away with, it's something jc knows JFM wouldn't mind. Which is why he's so pissed off. Which begs the question if JFM would not be upset with WWX's behavior why does jc need to criticize him? Again :
A dark expression shadowed Jiang Cheng’s face, and his voice was filled with anger. “Why are you so proud of yourself? What is there to be proud of?! Is being told to get out some amazing accomplishment? You’re making our entire clan lose face!”
and his glee at the idea that WWX will be punished leaves a bad taste in one's mouth considering how WWX was perpetually punished in Lotus Pier by jiang cheng's mother for... existing.
Jiang Cheng smiled grimly. “Now that you’ve thoroughly offended both Lan Wangji and Lan Qiren, you’re basically dead tomorrow. No one’s going to clean up your corpse either.”
and again
Without the old one, only the young one remained. This would be easy to deal with! Wei Wuxian rolled off the bed and laughed while putting on his boots. “Heaven’s charmed clouds are blessing me with shade.” Jiang Cheng was beside him polishing his sword with loving care when he decided to spill cold water over Wei Wuxian’s head. “Just wait until he gets back. You can’t escape punishment.”
Where others like NHS see value in WWX's thoughts
Nie Huaisang thought for a while. “Actually, I thought what you said was very interesting,” he said, not entirely able to hide his envy and yearning.
jc is always dismissive of WWX's ideas. These are inventions that WWX realizes. Demonic cultivation in the first conversation and The Spirit-Attraction Flag and The Compass of Evil in the second:
“Enough,” Jiang Cheng warned. “Whatever nonsense you spout, you better not head down that sort of dark road.”
-
Changing the topic, Wei Wuxian said, “If only there was something like fishing bait that could draw the water ghosts in. Or, something that could point in the direction they’re hiding, like a compass, that sort of thing.”
“Lower your head and watch the water,” Jiang Cheng said. “You’re letting your fantasies run wild again. Concentrate on looking for water ghosts like you’re supposed to.”
“Hey, mounting swords and flying was also only a fantasy once!” Wei Wuxian said.
He's also a hypocrite. Because even though he berates WWX for misbehaving, he himself breaks the rules. He drinks, he even goads WWX into buying liquor, the only difference is that he doesn't get punished for it, and he doesn't feel like coming forward and getting punished for it :
Naturally, Jiang Cheng was too embarrassed to talk about what Wei Wuxian had been up to. After all, all of them had egged him on to go and buy alcohol, and they all deserved to be punished as well. He could only speak vaguely. “It’s nothing. It’s nothing. It’s not that bad! He can walk. Wei Wuxian, why haven’t you gotten off yet?”
It's no wonder WWX is so impressed by LWJ's integrity in spite of his social status, when he's clearly used to the other dynamic :
“Lan Zhan, I really admire you,” Wei Wuxian said sincerely. “After I told you that you had to punish yourself too, you actually did it. You didn’t let yourself off at all. I can’t argue against that.”
A dynamic which is shown repeating in the Lotus Pod Extra where WWX is the only one to get punished for sunbathing, and which repeats here when Wei Wuxian here stops jiang cheng from confronting Zixuan over YanLi's honor (and jc's) and does it himself.
Zixuan :“Why don’t you ask what about her could make me satisfied?” he said in return.
Suddenly, Jiang Cheng rose. Wei Wuxian pushed him away and stepped between them, smiling coldly. “You think you’re very satisfactory? As though you have the right to be so picky!”
Zixuan: “If she’s unhappy, then let her break off the engagement! I certainly don’t cherish your wonderful disciple-sister. If you cherish her so much, why don’t you take it up with your father? Doesn’t he love you more than his own son?”
After hearing the last sentence, Jiang Cheng’s eyes narrowed, and Wei Wuxian was no longer able to contain his own fury. He flew at Jin Zixuan, his fist raised.
WWX takes the punishment alone. Same way he offers to do when he hurts himself falling from a tree because jc threatened him with dogs. meanwhile jc is gleeful to see him being punished.
[Wei Wuxian] was kneeling on the stretch of pebble road to which Lan Qiren had assigned him when Jiang Cheng walked over from afar and mocked him. “You’re kneeling so obediently.”
“It’s not like you don’t know I have to do this all the time.” Wei Wuxian’s voice filled with schadenfreude. “But this Jin Zixuan guy, there’s no way he hasn’t been pampered and spoiled rotten since birth. No one’s ever forced him to kneel, I’m sure of it. If he doesn’t wind up crying for mommy and daddy today, I’m not named Wei.”....
Wei Wuxian "...It’s a good thing you didn’t do anything.”
“I was going to. If you hadn’t pushed me away, the other side of Jin Zixuan’s face would be hideous too.”
“Stop it. His face is uglier for being lopsided."
WWX is happy to have spared jc from getting into trouble but jc makes the whole thing about himself anyway (like everything else ever) and is upset JFM would rush over for WWX - in his mind. Even though JFM clearly had to rush over to meet with Jin Guangshan not to coddle WWX in any way.
"Jiang Fengmian had never rushed to another clan in less than a day because of him. Regardless of whether what happened was big or small, or good or bad." Never
WWX on the other hand tries to be observant of jc's feelings and reassure him & distract him from his moods :
When Wei Wuxian saw Jiang Cheng’s melancholy expression, he thought he was still upset with what Jin Zixuan said. “You should leave. You don’t need to keep me company any longer. If Lan Wangji comes again, he’ll catch you. If you have time, you should find Jin Zixuan and watch his pitiful kneeling.”
Later in the book after nearly dying in the Xuanwu cave WWX leaves his sick bed to run after jc and comfort him after his mother's rant, even though WWX had to listen to his parents (and himself) being slandered by YZY. jc doesn't spare any thoughts for how other people might be feeling or suffering. His entire perception of the world is centered around himself. To him even WWX's greatest fear doesn't generate empathy, only amusement or later on a form of torture.
From that point onward, they made trouble everywhere together, and if they encountered a dog, Jiang Cheng would always chase it away for him, then enjoy a peal of derisive, unbridled laughter at Wei Wuxian’s expense beneath whichever tree the boy had leapt atop.
he grew up on the streets, often having to fight for food with vicious dogs. After several bites and chases, he gradually became extremely scared of all dogs, no matter the size. Jiang Cheng laughed at him because of this quite a lot of times.
This brings me to the last point. jc's resentment of WWX's interest in Lan Zhan, or in a serious friendship outside of him. I see so many ppl say that bc WWX fought he was kicked out of the Cloud Recesses early... but was he?
Jiang Cheng was somewhat taken aback. “Lan Wangji? What was he doing here? He still has the nerve to come see you again?”
“Yeah, I think his bravery is laudable if he still has the nerve to come see me. His uncle probably told him to check on me and see if I was kneeling properly.”
Jiang Cheng’s instincts were sending him ominous signals. “So were you kneeling properly?”
“I was then,” Wei Wuxian replied. “But I waited for him to walk away a bit, then took a tree branch, lowered my head, and dug out a hole in the dirt near me. It’s the pile right by your foot—there are ant tunnels there. It took me so much effort to find them. Anyway, I waited for him to turn back and see my shoulders shaking. He had to have thought I was crying, so he came back and asked. You should have seen his face when he caught sight of the ant tunnels!
“…” Jiang Cheng said, “Why don’t you just get the hell out and go back to Yunmeng? I bet he never wants to see you again.”
Thus, that evening, Wei Wuxian packed up his things, got the hell out, and went back to Yunmeng with Jiang Fengmian.
Repeatedly throught his stay in the Cloud Recesses even while NHS was observing that LWJ's behavior around WWX was strange and unique, jc was telling WWX he is hated and bothersome. When WWX wanted to apologize to LWJ jc is completely dismissive of it :
“He hates me already? I was thinking of apologizing to him,” Wei Wuxian said.
“Oh, so you want to apologize now? It’s too late!” Jiang Cheng said derisively. “He’s exactly like his uncle. He thinks you’ve been wicked ever since you were an embryo, so it’s beneath his dignity to pay you any attention.”
Later on when WWX mentioned wanting to invite LWJ to Lotus Pier jc categorically says no.
“Jiang Cheng had on a stern expression, “Let’s make this clear. I don’t want him to come, anyhow. Don’t invite him.”
BONUS
jc also always doubts WWX. He suspects him immediately of wrongdoings. He doesn't believe that getting hit with the discipline ruler in Cloud Recesses actually hurt him until LXC confirms that WWX might take more than a few days to heal. He doesn't understand WWX is in actual trouble from the Waterborne abyss and assumes he's fooling around luckily Lan Zhan is there to rescue him:
The disciple’s lower body had already been swallowed by the black whirlpool. It spun faster and faster, and he continued to sink deeper and deeper, as though something hidden beneath the water was pulling down on his legs.
Mounted on Sandu, Jiang Cheng had risen calmly until he was about sixty meters above the whirlpool before he looked down. Filled with displeasure at what he saw, he shouted and dove down. “What are you up to now?!”
The suction force inside Lake Biling grew ever stronger. Wei Wuxian’s sword was optimized for agility, and consequently, its strength happened to fall just short, and they were nearly pulled to the surface of the lake. Wei Wuxian steadied himself and held on to Su She with both hands.
“Someone help! If I can’t pull him up soon, I’ll have to let go!” he shouted.
Suddenly, the back of Wei Wuxian’s collar tightened, and his body was lifted into the air. He twisted his neck and saw Lan Wangji holding him up with one hand.
He maintains this same mindset when he tries to whip LWJ and WWX as they're attempting to leave Lotus Pier after the ancestral hall confrontation when WWX passes out.
Is jc evil in the Cloud Recesses ? No. He's just an annoying, basic, disagreeable asshole who doesn't bring anything positive to someone like WWX. People like jc become obsessed with kind, outgoing, generous people, people who don't set boundaries on what they give and what others take in their friendships. Even though they're dependent on them for their social interactions, because who else would socialize with them willingly, they resent them in equal measure, but at the same time they wouldn't be drawn to another selfish, self centered piece of shit person like themselves.
On a personal note, even Cloud Recesses jiang cheng is someone I would exclude from any personal friend group. Friendship with him is adding a minefield of jealousies and snide comments to every interaction. Things that then others will need to compensate around because he won't compromise or empathize w issues outside of his own concerns.
