Pairing: Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) x Barbara Minerva (Cheetah)
Summary: A few years after the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Diana runs into Barbara at the mall.
Words: 1600+
Warnings: mentions of eating food

Diana sifted through the racks, pulling out any shirts that sparked her interest. She had an interview for a new position at the museum tomorrow, and even though she wasn’t afraid of not getting it, it’s always nice to get something new and look nice. With this new job, she’d have more oversight over the department, and possibly be able to spend more time exploring her own interests.
After trying everything on and checking out, Diana headed to the mall food court to grab a bite to eat. Usually the food there didn’t appeal to her very much, but today it smelled too good to resist.
She stood in line, skimming over the menu and checking her wallet.
“…Diana?” she heard a familiar voice behind her.
The sweet voice she never thought she’d ever hear again.
She turned around to see her old friend Barbara Minerva, pressing her lips together and rocking from side to side sheepishly.
“Barbara? Is that really you?”
She looked different, but not unrecognizable. Her hair was a few shades darker and less fluffy, but she had her old glasses still. Her outfit was very bland and casual, nothing like the bright colors and bold patterns she used to love.
Barbara nodded, “Yeah. I’m sorry, I just…I was in town and I saw you and thought I’d say hi. You seem busy though, I can go-“
“No,” Diana smiled, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Stay and have lunch with me, I’d love to catch up,”
“Really?”
“Yes of course. I’ve missed you,”
They both ordered their food and found an empty table, although they were much more invested in conversation than the fries.
“I heard you moved away, so where are you living now?” Diana took a sip of her drink. “And what brings you back here?”
“New York City, currently,” Barbara responds. “I…I just wanted a fresh start, you know? I took a job at the Natural History Museum up there and I like it a lot,” she laughs, “People still don’t really notice me, but I don’t mind so much anymore,”
“Wow,”
“I came back here to visit some family for the weekend, but I’m heading back tomorrow,” she adjusts her glasses and takes a bite of her food. “What have you been up to?”
“Well, still working at the Smithsonian. I have an interview tomorrow for a promotion and if it goes well I’ll oversee the department,”
“Oh my gosh Diana! That’s amazing!”
“Thank you,” she laughs. “It is exciting, I suppose,”
“Well I hope you get it. I know you’ll get it,”
Diana sighs through her grin, debating on how much she should ask Barbara. It’s been several years since the incident, but time works differently for everyone, something an immortal like herself will never fully understand. Barbara seems to have moved on, but there was a tension that she couldn’t deny. They never got closure since Barbara packed her bags pretty quickly. Maybe she was avoiding Diana, avoiding Maxwell, maybe trying to run away from herself.
There was a short silence before Diana spoke again, “Barbara, why did you leave?”
She laughed it off, ignoring the seriousness of the question, “I told you, I just wanted a fresh start. Doesn’t everybody want that once in a while?”
“Why couldn’t you start fresh here?”
“Because…” she looked down, across the room, everywhere except Diana’s gaze. “I couldn’t face you after what happened. I couldn’t just go to work the next day after everything I did. I would rather just abandon everything. I almost didn’t even talk to you today, but I just felt like I needed to,”
“Barbara,” Diana placed her hand over hers. “I was never angry at you. I could never be angry at you,”
She pulled her hand away, “Diana I literally tried to kill you. I became a monster and tried to stop you from saving the world. I was selfish and cruel and awful and I don’t deserve to be anything close to your friend. Not after that,”
“I believe in forgiveness,” Diana smiles. “And I forgive you,”
“I…thank you,” Barbara nods. “Well now I kinda wish I stayed,”
Diana pauses a moment.
“You could come back, if that’s what you wanted,”
“Diana- I couldn’t. There’s no place for me here anymore,”
Diana shakes her head, “That’s not true. If I get this promotion, this new position, I’ll have the power to hire new people. I could give you your old job back,”
“Are you serious?”
“Of course,”
“Wow! Well, I mean, why not, right?” she giggles. “Okay, so I guess Ill have to move all my stuff back here, that might be a couple weeks to settle in again, and I have to wrap up my other job. I don’t even know where to live though, my old apartment is most likely taken so I’ll have to find a new one, oh gosh all this-“
“You’re welcome to stay in my apartment until you find a place,”
“Really? Wow. I don’t even know what to say,”
“It’s my pleasure,” Diana packs up her food containers and tosses it in the nearby trashcan. “You know, if you’re still around tomorrow, I’d love to get together again before you head back,”
“Yes! Yes I’d love that,”
 -
Diana and Barbara met up again late in the evening the next day, after Barbara decided to take a later flight. They had dinner and took a walk around the city, up and down streets with no destination.
It was as if they were simply continuing the friendship they started before, babbling on about whatever comes to mind and laughing together. Diana missed this, being with one of the only people who could make her feel this happy. Before everything happened, Barbara had given her hope, hope that she could have fun again, hope that she could love again. Now they could pick up where they left off, start new and move on through life together.
“You know, Diana,” Barbara looked up at her. “I don’t think you ever explained to me what you are. I mean clearly you have some sort of superpowers. Of course you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to! Just forget I ever said anything,”
“Barbara, it’s alright, truly,” Diana smiles. “I’m a demigoddess, I come from the island of Themyscira, the island of the Amazons. My mother is Queen Hippolyta and my father is Zeus,”
“Oh wow,” Barbara’s eyes widen. “So like, all that Greek mythology stuff, that’s all real?”
“Very real, yes,”
“So when I wished to be like you, I was a demigoddess too?”
“You had the powers of one, yes,” Diana nods, then stops a moment. “Is that really what your wish was?”
“Yeah…I know,” Barbara shrugged. “I just...when I first met you, you were so perfect and so beautiful and being your friend made me so incredibly happy for once, and I guess I thought being like you would make me even happier,” she bit her lip. “But I think just being with you makes me happy. I don’t want to be you anymore, Diana. I just want you to be in my life,”
“I want that too,” Diana says.
“Gosh, I really missed you,” Barbara laughs, but there’s also tears in her eyes.
Diana stops walking and brings a hand to Barbara’s face, wiping a tear away with her thumb, “It’s going to be alright,”
She leans into Diana’s touch, smiling against her palm, “Thank you,”
“Would you like me to take you home for the night?” Diana asks, stroking her hand down Barbara’s hair.
“No,” she shakes her head. “I mean, maybe, I don’t know,”
“How about I take you somewhere else, then,” Diana slips out her lasso and wraps her arm around Barbara’s waist. “Would you like to try flying?”
“You can fly?!” Barbara squeals. “Yes! Yes! Absolutely yes!”
Diana grins and tightens her grip, throwing the lasso in the air and catching the wind. Barbara screams and holds on as tight as she can, burying her face in Diana’s shoulder more and more as they got higher.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” Diana whispers.
Eventually they land on the top of a building, Barbara still clinging on for dear life. It’s a beautiful overlook of the city, all the lights and people down below. Barbara beams when she looks over Diana’s shoulder, resting her feet down slowly.
“Wow, Diana,” she walks over to the railing and takes in the view. “This makes all that worth it,”
“I couldn’t always fly, you know,” Diana joins her. “I only learned a few years ago…when someone helped me,”
“I see,”
It wasn’t hard for Barbara to connect the dots and figure out who she was talking about, and she was able to read Diana well enough to know she shouldn’t push it. She could only assume that the man Diana wished for was now gone. Forever.
“Diana I…I feel like I should tell you something,”
“What is it?”
Barbara took a deep breath, “You know how I said when I first met you I was so so confused, I didn’t know if I wanted to be like you or just be your friend?”
“Yes, I remember,”
“I think it was more than that,”
“I understand, Barbara,”
“You do?”
“I felt it too. I was…just too afraid to move on at the time, I suppose,” Diana took her hand and intertwined their fingers. “But now I think I am,”
“Really?” Barbara meets her gaze. “Are you really ready for that?”
“I am,” Diana faces her. “I’m ready to love again,”
Barbara smiles, not taking her eyes off of her.
Diana leans in slowly and presses a soft kiss to her lips, cradling her face and separating with a grin, “I’m ready to love you,”

Read @ AO3
Diana stands, watches at the sun rises on the horizon. Closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, her job is done, Ares is dead. But so is Steve.
The war might no be over yet, but she knows what she must do. And she must do so quickly. As soon as Charlie, Sameer and Napi are with her, she looks at Napi in the eye and says, "I need to get to the Acheron river, as quickly as possible."
Napi, who understands well enough, nods. "I will get you there."
"Thank you," she's grateful for his help.
"Why do you need to go there Diana?" It's Sameer who asks.
"To get Steve back." Her answer is simple and direct. Making both Sameer and Charlie's eyes widen in surprise. "But I must do so quickly."
They rest for the reminder of the day and the night, making for Greece on the following day. Diana pushes them to move as quickly as they can, they only have a certain amount of time to bring Steve back, she's not sure how long (for that is never told amongst the Amazons), but she knows that the sooner the appeal is done to Hades, the better.
She also hopes that Hades is alive, only he can grant Steve's return, should it please him.
But she also knows that she must follow some rituals, and nearly despairs when she is told that black rams are rare and not easy to find.
But she pushes on, she had to have hope that she will be able to bring Steve back. She has to believe she will be able.
"Are you sure this is possible Diana?" Charlie, ever the skeptic asks.
"My mother told me so. She would say the Gods could be move to help and us, perhaps if Hades is alive, he might be generous and give us Steve back."
Charlie doesn't respond, but she doesn't miss the uncertain look on his face. But she keeps her chin up and carries on.
They make to Greece after some weeks of travel. Diana's heart beats loud in her chest, what if she doesn't get the ram? What if Hades is dead? What if Hades denies her request?
But on their fifth day in Greece, they stumble on some rams, and Diana watches as a black one is among the rest. She feels her heart in her throat, "Give me a moment, I need to get the ram."
The men watch as she darts forward and catches the ram, slack jawed as she ties it up and brings it with her, "The black one Diana?" Sameer asks.
"Sacred to Hades," Diana replies. "I must observe the proper rites to enter the Underworld, and hopefully have some luck convincing Hades to return Steve."
They press forward until they reach the Acheron, Diana's nerves kick in and she excuses herself to change back into the clothes Steve bought for her in London.
She asks for some space and Napi, Charlie and Sameer back off from the river and from Diana, she proceeds with the ritual. Takes the now dead ram and looks at Napi, "Please, look after my things, I will return as soon as I can. With some luck, Steve with be with me."
Napi simply nods and Diana throws the ram at the river and then jumps in, follows as the ram floats and then begins to sink, darkness and cold surround her, the sounds of the river disappearing and she feels like she's going in deep.
The next thing she knows, she's at the banks of another river under a cave. The entrance of the Underworld. She walks until she finds a boat and the man who ferries it.
The man watches her as she approaches, "And who are you?" He asks.
"I am Diana, daughter of Hippolyta, Queen of Amazons of Themyscira. Daughter of Zeus."
At that, the man's eyebrows shot up, "Daughter of Zeus, eh? Well, I am Charon, the ferry man. And what brings you here?"
"I wish to speak with Hades."
"Do you have your coin, daughter of Zeus?"
She's a warrior, she always carries a coin or two with her at all times, so she reaches into one of the pockets and then lifts a golden coin, "I do."
"Then get in," Charon moves aside to let her into the ferry.
The ride is made in silence, only after she has crossed and is about to disembark does she give Charon the coin. Then runs, full speed forward. She doesn't know how she knows where to go, only that she must keep going. Doesn't stop until she reaches a palace and stops abruptly. There's a man standing at top of the steps.
Diana stops and makes a deep bow. The man acknowledges it and begins walking towards her, she remains in place.
"And what brings a daughter of Zeus to my real, I wonder," the man speaks once he is near her.
'Brave Diana, be brave,' she thinks. Out loud she says, "To beg for a boon."
"Ah," the man nods his head. "Tell me who you are, what is that you wish of me and we'll see if I can - or will - grant it."
"I am Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Hippolyta. I have come to beg for one soul, a man who I love and bravely gave his life to save millions of others."
The man says nothing, but narrows his eyes and Diana takes this chance to study the man, he is tall, handsome too. Tanned skin with olive green eyes and dark hair, well kept beard. Then he sighs, "As you might have guessed already, I am Hades. And as to your request..."
"I know I ask much without offering something in turn, but well, I do not know what you would want from me."
Hades laughs, "Child, you already did want I wanted. You killed Ares. The boy needed to die I'm afraid. And you did observed the rituals. So I might feel generous and grant you this soul. Now, what is this boy's name?"
"Steven Rockwell Trevor," she says, voice firm.
Hades summons a servant, "Find me Steven Rockwell Trevor." The servant vanishes, to do what he's been asked. Hades then turns to Diana, "Listen child, I grant you this boon as a thanks for avenging those who died at Ares' hands. But hear me well, I make sure you don't look back, else your boy will remain. You hear me? Do not look back until you are back on mortal's land."
Diana bows deeply, "You have my gratitude my King." She then hesitates to ask, but finds that her curiosity wins over her hesitation, "Did some Gods survived? When Ares attacked, I mean."
Hades looks at her, eyebrows raised, "Of course they did. They are probably hiding. Ares alone couldn't kill everyone, they probably ran the moment the attack started. They will probably go back now that Ares is dead."
She's about to respond when the servant reappears, "Steven Trevor is in the Elysian Fields my King."
"Take my niece there and then return," Hades turns and looks at Diana, "Remember child, no looking back until you're back on mortal land."
"Of course my King, thank you," she watches as Hades turns and returns to his palace, then she turns to the servant, "lead on please."
The servant dashes forward and she follows. Everything is a blur, her mind set only on getting Steve back. They only stop at the entrance, "I can't go further in Lady Diana, you must get your Steven Trevor yourself."
"Thank you," she says and walks into the fields. They're much more beautiful than Themyscira, but she supposed that virtuous souls deserve it. She begins wondering around, "Steve!" she calls for him as she looks everywhere.
It's a good while before she hears, "Diana?" out loud and she looks at the direction her name came from. Steve is standing there, in his uniform, looking quite worried. She rushes towards him.
"Oh Steve, I found you!" She says as she wraps her arms around him. He's solid, just as she is and she wants to weep, but doesn't.
"Did you died too?" Steve holds her strongly, voice quivering.
"No, I came to get you back."
"How?" Steve takes a step back and looks at Diana.
Her hands go and take a hold of his face, "Hades, my uncle, he's allowing me to take you back."
Steve turns and lays a gentle kiss on her hand, "Are you sure?"
"I am. Had he not allowed it, I wouldn't be here. We can go back, together."
"How?"
"We leave the Underworld by the same place I came, but I can't look back at all. Once we leave the Elysian Fields, if I look back, I loose you."
Steve nods, a serious look on his face, "Then I won't say anything at all until we're safe."
"Thank you, let's go." She takes a hold of his hand and squeezes.
They make their way back, slowly, Steve following Diana in silence, she struggling to not look back. But she can't afford to make a mistake and loose Steve. With every step they draw closer to the entrance. "We'll need to swim upstream Steve, can you do it?" She asks once she's reached the Acheron, fighting the urge to look back.
"Yes, I think I can."
"Then brace yourself, we're leaving."
They jump into the river and swim upwards. The waters are cold and dark, but the push forward. They don't know how much time it passes, but suddenly, Diana can see the water becoming clearer and clearer. They're close. Her heart races and she prays all goes well.
Then, she can see trees and knows the shoreline is close and without much more effort, she pushes forward once more and she comes up the surface. Night has fallen and everything is silent. Pulls herself out the river and still not looks back.
Then she hears, "Diana?"
"Steve, are you out of the river?"
"Yeah, I'm on the riverbed."
Only then she turns, Steve is standing there, a tentative smile on his face and tears cloud her vision. But she swallows them up and embraces Steve. Then tears fall, "I thought I'd lost you."
Steve gently sways her, "You got me Diana. I'm never going to leave you."
She cries, all the stress and worry finally coming to the surface, Steve simply does his best to comfort her. She says nothing until her tears have stopped, "You're back."
"I'm back, thanks to you." Steve whispers in her ear.
She holds him close, and feels as he embraces her just as hard, neither of them wanting to let go. This reunion is something she worked hard for, but now they have time together.
"I love you," she whispers. "Now we have more time."
"I love you too," he whispers back. "Thanks to you."
They remain in each other's arms, until they hear, "Steve?!"
She looks up and finds Sameer looking at them, looking quite pale. Steve lets go and says, "I'm back."
"We're back," she says and takes a hold of his hand, walking towards Sameer. "And we're here to stay."

Dark Nights: Metal #3
I'm trying to be more positive so I'd like to praise John Romita Jr. for how well he draws monster teeth. If he drew them, that is!
How come heroes always say shit like this? Have they never been around their friends when their friends are drunk? "Good" goes out the window pretty fucking easily.
The Flash races out of a giant ankh to rescue Superman from the Bat-inspired evil Justice League. He takes him to The Oblivion Bar where Detective Chimp reminds everybody that the DC Universe heartily sucked for a long while because Dan DiDio believed it wasn't a place for fun and whimsy. Of course, that's all being taken care of now with this Rebirth and Watchmen shit. Now all the idiots who thought Comics Shouldn't Be Fun Again are backpedaling and pretending it was the fault of everybody but the editors in charge. "It was the Watchmen! They changed it all for the worse!" "It was the fans! This is what they said they wanted!" "It wasn't Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, or Dan DiDio at all! Stop looking at us! I mean them!" Oh! Tomorrow is Friday the 13th! I have to remember to play the Friday the 13th video game tomorrow because they have to do something special, right? Like maybe log the IP of everybody who plays and send Jason around to murder us all? How fun would that be! Seriously! Please somebody kill me. This country has gotten so terrible.
Racist! Or anti-golem? Whatever it is, it's probably gross, right? Am I doing youth correctly?
Other people hiding out in the Oblivion Bar are Steel, Mister Terrific, the Justice League, Green Arrow, Damian Wayne, and Plastic Man stuck in the form of a giant egg. But even as an egg, he's able to vibrate out a message. Wonder Woman translates it as "Oh. OH! OoOoOoHhHhHh! OH ZEUS YES!" Mister Terrific translates it as coordinates to deep space, beneath Atlantis, and the center of the multiverse. What kind of chart can graph those coordinates? An XYZZZZZZZZZZZ chart? I buy that Mister Terrific can figure them out but how the fuck did Plastic Man do the math on them? He's just a petty, clumsy crook turned accidental superhero! I don't remember him being a maths genius! Plastic Egg also gives some negative coordinates and Mister Terrific is all, "These don't make sense! I may be a genius but I don't understand how coordinates work!" Luckily Superman is there to be all, "Nobody pay attention to this whole thing about negative numbers not being valid coordinates! He probably means the Dark Multiverse!" And everybody is all, "Whew! Good save, Superman! That certainly was a job for you!" Deathstork arrives to help out because he has a Promethium sword. It's not Nth metal but it'll do the trick when it comes to hurting the Batjerks. Now everybody can split up and go explore all the coordinates Plastic Egg vibrated into Mister Terrific's ear. Ear? Yeah, it was probably his ear. Steel, Flash, and Superman team up to rescue Batman from the Dark Multiverse. Mister Terrific, Green Lantern, and Plastic Egg team up to head into deep space. Doctor Fate, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman head to the Rock of Eternity. And Aquaman and Deathstork head to the place beneath Atlantis. Most of the teams have an easy job, following the coordinates. But Superman's team has to rely on Superman making up a theory as to how they can get to the Dark Multiverse. Luckily, it's a comic book so science that is pure speculation is usually good enough to get the job done. Superman makes it to the Dark Multiverse but finds that it's a trap! Surprise! Batman was trying to warn Superman not to save him but Superman was too dumb to figure out Batman's genius code. So typical of Superman. He never does the smart thing. He should have listened to Nightwing. Everybody should listen to Nightwing! He's the only one that ever knows what's going on. Not only is it a trap but it's part of Barbatos's plan. He needs Superman's body to be the battery for his gadget to turn Earth-Main-Earth into a hell dimension. It's too bad that all of the ancient texts Hawkman and Hawkwoman read didn't say something about Superman being the key to the rise of Barbatos. All the clues pointed to Batman! So once again, Hawkman fucked up. What an idiot. Dark Nights: Metal #3 Rating: Not too bad. I mean, Mister Terrific, the world's third smartest man, made a stupid mistake. But that's to be expected when Not the World's Third Smartest Man is writing the comic book. It's hard to write a genius when you have to know things. Which sucks because writers are writers so they don't have to know stuff! You get to just make shit up! I mean, sure, you can do research. But what if you don't know you need to do research when you're writing about something like, say, coordinates?! Obviously all coordinates must be positive, right? How can negative coordinates exist in the world?! That doesn't make any sense! Which is why latitude and longitude are totally fake news. Those places in negative latitudes and longitudes either don't exist or are composed of pure evil. Mainly I'm excited for the Aquaman/Deathstork team-up. I hope that becomes a forty-five issue maxi-series.
