1. How many works do you have on AO3?

i have 113 works on ao3. one of them is a multichapter containing two separate-but-connected short stories, which brings the tally up to 114. this is what happens when you publish a series of standalone flash fiction pieces individually lmao

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

oogh let's see...68,128 words

3. What fandoms do you write for?

i've now written for both tes and bg3! getting attached to a customizable player character and wanting to develop their story is usually what moves me to start writing fanfic. if i stopped playing rpgs i'd probably stop writing fanfic

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

a simple solution threescore and nine the way an esteemed and venerable office silly

5. Do you respond to comments?

on ao3, i try to respond to all of them! i don't respond to tags that people leave on my work here on tumblr, but i read them all and really appreciate them

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

i'm thinking that it's a tie between the stomach for it (which ends the story of shurri as a plucky orphan learning about the good in people and starts the story of shurri as a traumatized pawn of empire) and as of the world untwisting

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

most of the pieces about ravi and little shurri (in vignettes: solitude) end on a deliberately sweet and hopeful note—i try to write them so that it's possible to read them as standalones, without prior context about the characters, so it's important to finish them up in a way that suggests the overall tenor of their dynamic but the form's a little restrictive sometimes! if i wanted to really delve into the ways that they made each other's lives difficult and frustrating (the ways in which they were an average family, in other words), i'd have to write a novel

8. Do you get hate on fics?

it's never happened, to my recollection

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

i've included sex scenes in original works that called for sex scenes...i haven't yet run into a narrative reason to write any fanfic with on-the-page sex in it, but i've hinted at the sex lives of my characters in a few pieces, when relevant. it's not usually relevant! the style of my tes stuff is fairly middle-grade. not that diana wynne jones didn't write about sex but you'd be surprised to find a sex scene in the middle of howl's moving castle the likeliest scenario for future work is that i'll write about a character in flagrante if it's funny. enthir's in the faculty lounge smugly hinting that he gets around more than anyone else in the college (he sometimes flirts with birna, who ignores him) (smash cut to urag and ravi smoking in bed)

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

i've never written a crossover

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge! i've occasionally read bits of things that felt inspired by my style or subject matter and i love that. it's very flattering. i think i remember someone quoting one of my posts in their fic summary once?

gf and i have had one in the works forever. that it's not done yet is my fault. it takes me ten thousand years to write anything

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i hate to say that the future of peace in any season ("the big wip") is in question but it's been in question since i started it...i chose to focus it on a series of events ten years out from the main storyline of tes v on purpose, so that readers wouldn't miss anything too crucial if i stalled out on it but i still have a lot of love for the project and work on it when i can. i'd really like to bring this one to you

16. What are your writing strengths?

what i often hear is that people like my dialogue. i'm glad...it's my favorite part of a story to write

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

very often i lose interest in a piece too quickly to finish writing it down. i have to set it aside until i get the urge to pick it up again. i'm working on a (currently) 1300-word piece right now that i started three years ago, and i wrote 900 of those words last week

if cormac mccarthy can do it...

Lewisohn vs. Wenner Pt. 1 of 2

I kid, I kid! Of course I'll adjudicate things between these lads.

I'm working on the follow-up(s) to my Kim Bennett post, but I lack the degree of coherence necessary to finish them at the moment. My household has been hit with Covid and influenza, so I'm too sleep deprived to string together a proper point. But I can still check citations, baby!

Today we're tackling a fun source: Jann Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine and early-70s confidante of the LennOnos. Mark Lewisohn quotes interviews conducted by Jann Wenner ten times in Tune In; nine of those quotes had issues. Nine of the ten quotes come from the infamous Lennon Remembers interview (conducted in Dec. 1970 and first published in Jan. 1971); the other one is from a different 1970 interview for Rolling Stone. A few of these have been covered by @mythserene; I've included links to her analysis.

About half of Lewisohn's Wenner-sourced 'quotes' are Textbook Multi-Source Frankenquotes. Lewisohn does this quite brazenly--if you look at the text of the endnote, it will say something like "First and third parts of quote from Bip Bop Weekly, second part from interview with...." The multi-source quotes will appear in part two; this post will include the single-source ones.

Pictured text is from Lennon Remembers (Verso, 2000 ed.), but I made my comparison against the audio of the interview. You can listen to it on YouTube here. I've included time stamps as well as page numbers for each quote.

Tune In 33-2 vs. Wenner p.65 (1:49:24), 145-6 (4:16:43)

I do not like the way Lewisohn wrote/cited this--each quote from the Beatles is pulled from a different source, but it's presented almost as a dialogue. It would be simple stuff to slap an endnote after each quote giving its source, rather than using a single endnote for all four separate quotes.

That's just a quibble, but this quote delivers a big issue as well. See that ellipsis? Lewisohn is letting you know that he left out over two hours of recorded interview between the first and second parts of this quote. You can use an ellipsis to omit a few words or a sentence or two in the same passage--you can't use it to omit multiple hours of conversation.

An ellipsis would be perfectly acceptable between the fragment and the final sentence, but Lewisohn chose not to use one.

Tune In 24-33 vs. Wenner p.63 (1:44:58)

I have come to love those instances were Lewisohn throws in one token ellipsis as if that will distract from the fact that he completely scrambled the order of the sentences.

Tune In 31-44 vs. Wenner p.27 (54:46)

@anotherkindofmindpod discussed this in their Fine Tuning series - I believe in the episode "Leader Lennon." I won't hit it too hard.

As you can see, the context in the source text is wildly different from its use in Tune In. In the original, John is discussing confronting the Maharishi about rape allegations. In Tune In, Lewisohn uses it in the context of….discussing a song choice with George Martin. A bit different. John does imply some universality in the source quote (“as usual”), but this still seems like a stretch. Also note the omission of the word “actually” in the phrase “I actually had to be the leader,” which, to my reading, implies that John wasn’t constantly in Leader Lennon mode, unless the others were forcing him to handle the dirty work.

ep8: -this is cool to watch with the context of nico back in f1 today -theres just something so funny about when drivers get told something they dont wanna hear over the radio and its just dead silence. theyre real for that tho -nico/cyril jet "therapy" conversation is so iconic TO ME -i now know how alain prost is yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy -i think both of daniel's one year teammate tenures (nico & estie) are both sooooooooo interesting. ship wise fascinating. underrated as hell. -neurodivergent daniel propoganda "nico huuuuuulkenburg" is 100% a vocal stim -ESTIE my beloved. the original Toto Wolff's Special Lil Guy™ -no its so nice to see him in this gap where it was all up in the air knowing how much he's cemented his place in formula 1 now. Compulsory Question 1

Since there are only statements that we all agree with, there are not many of them. Although these 4 rules are quite obvious and cliche, they’re inarguably true.

Rule number one is about simplicity: “Less is more". In design communication, in order to ‘communicate’ easily and effectively, we have to be able to simplify things. The simpler the messages and the visuals are, the easier they can reach out to people. Simplicity also leaves space for creativity and other perspectives. The simpler the idea is, the easier it can be developed.

Rule number two is communication and engagement. Learning to communicate is always important whether it is between designers, clients or the society. It is the key to understand each other, to care and to collaborate. The communication here is also referring to how designers can engage in and impact our community.

Rule number three is “Attention to detail". We believe that what makes a designer stand out from the others is the ability to pay attention to even the smallest thing, give it reasons and context. It is also about how one can filter what is and is not important, pay attention to small details, but not anything.

The fourth rule is reflection. In the process of exploring, generating ideas, developing and adapting a design, the reflection step always lies in every stage. It is crucial to be critical, to reflect what we have done and what we could have done better.

There is one more statement that we didn't include in the version 2 because it’s a bit different from the others (originally in my manifesto): Nothing is more truly artistic than to love people. This is also one of my mottos in life because I think love is so beautiful and the purpose of most any form of art is to express love in some ways.

But in design and in relation with CTS B, to me this quote talks about the importance of the context and the story. It's always better to have a strong understanding of the context of what you are designing for and what story you want to tell. For example in the branding module, instead of just coming up with a random tea brand to design for, I found a video about how Japanese people grow and produce ceremonial matcha and their technique inspired my design. So I use that technique as the main inspiration for the design.

I also want to add one more rule: Show yourself. This is what I learned from CTS B (especially week 9 and 10) and it’s particularly significant to me: Always be aware of your identity, interest and vision. For example, I'm interested in context and background story of any design work so I found a story for my tea branding project to make it more meaningful; I also talked about the interest in risograph and want to intern at a risograph studio; and the identity of a Vietnamese teenager in my personal project (that I'll discuss more in question 2). All of these helps others to understand who I am and help me to preparing practically for my future.

What I love about them: OKAY SO, the wonders of watching YGO as a fully grown person: suddenly the snarky, over the top, asshole rival character quickly becomes your favorite. As a kid, I genuinely didn't care at all about him. But that changed SO MUCH, as an adult. IMHO Kaiba may as well be the protagonist of the anime's version of YGO. What I hate about them: Nothing comes to my mind, honestly? Sometimes, you just want your blorbos going off the charts, and that's all A-OK in my book. Although I'll say it: Kaiba's involvement in the 5Ds anime is kinda of confusing ngl. I get that's part of the same timeline, but???? IDK something is off. Maybe there was going to be more, that didn't make it in the end. Favorite Moment/Quote: I honestly could put every single line he has ever said in the dub. But the one that takes the gold for me has to be:

Seto Kaiba: So you got a dweeb army. Is that supposed to make me afraid to attack? Dartz: No, not unless destroying an innocent soul concerns you Seto Kaiba: As the CEO of a Mega Corporation, I have to do that everyday

What I would like to see more focus on: I feel like it would have been nice to see some more of him in both GX and 5Ds (the latter is just to try better explain why was he involved in the big catastrophe of the series, but I also don't mind leaving it up for interpretation and guesses)What I would like to see less focus on: I wished Yugi/Atem wouldn't steal the attention from Kaiba's story, so he isn't reduced into another cheerleader. Favorite pairing with: Yugi/Kaiba, Ishizu Ishtar/Seto Kaiba, Malik Ishtar/Seto Kaiba and Ryuji Otogi/Seto Kaiba are some of the ships I still hold dearly to! Favorite friendship: Kaiba doesn't have any friendships. NO BUT HEAR ME OUT, I like the idea of Pegasus and Kaiba trying to amend for what happened in Duelists' kingdom, as shown in their v close business relationship in GX. I'm glad the anime didn't kill off Pegasus. NOTP: Joey/Kaiba Favorite headcanon: 4kids' dub version of unhinged Kaiba > the sub original and more down to earth Kaiba. I said it, and I'll keep saying it: This is the exact reason I loved this character. "bUt iTs nOt FaiThFul tO tHe SoURcE mAtEriaL" I can hear ppl cry about it, and I'll keep supporting dubbed Kaiba's assholery in that version. Even if it comes at the cost of the story/context of many things changing. It's a price I'm willing to pay.

What I love about them: Ahsoka's behind the scenes production story is genuinely interesting, in a time and period where nobody feels like putting effort into anything, and just resort to insulting others at the slightest bit of criticism! It's refreshing and very inspiring! When TCW was in production, they decided to give Anakin a padawan, and they KNEW the reception to the idea wouldn't be a warm one from the community. So, instead of throwing a tantrum, the team EMBRACED that and worked around it. So Ahsoka would gradually gain the audience's interest, as she also grew as a character. Ahsoka IS intentionally written as an unlikeable brat in the first 2 seasons, and in the later seasons we see how much she matured. The effort paid off, and Ahsoka is now held up as one of the best prequels era characters. What I hate about them: Filoni is setting out to undo all the hardwork they put into her, via overexposure. Ever since the Mandalorian show, she suddenly became the bridge to EVERYTHING. Even though, her actions shouldn't really give her that much influence or position to begin with. Favorite Moment/Quote:

"You're A Good Soldier Rex. So Is Every One Of Those Men Down There. They May Be Willing To Die, But I Am Not Going To Be The One Who Kills Them."

What I would like to see more focus on: I'd love to see some more of her bond and connection with Plo Koon. We only get a 5 secs clip, in the first season of TCW of them meeting, and this is never expanded on. Which IMO is such a big missed opportunity. What I would like to see less focus on: STOP FILONI'S ANTI-JEDI PROPAGANDAAAA Favorite pairing with: Rex/Ahsoka Favorite friendship: Ahsoka & Anakin, Ahsoka & Padmé, Ahsoka & Barriss. Honestly? I could go off. NOTP: Any form of Master/padawan ship. This is something I'm not interested in to begin with, and that doesn't go away even after she leaves the order or ages over time. That just isn't my cup of tea - So basically: Sabine/Ahsoka and Anakin/Ahsoka. Favorite headcanon: I can't hear Filoni, she is not going around blaming the jedi for their own genocide. She also doesn't go around calling herself a jedi knight, whenever it is convenient to her. She left the order in her own accords, and she has to live with that fact.

Twibel

The early days of the internet drove a need for a series of court cases and laws to clarify how existing policies were to be applied or modified to remain applicable in the digital age. Copyright, fair-use, and libel are among the many topics debated in the context of rapid and quite anonymous sharing of information. Surprisingly, Grammy and Golden Globe-nominated singer and actress Courtney Love would lead a landmark case which was centered around the intersection of Twitter posts and defamation. Affectionately coined as “Twibel” (Twitter’s “tweet” combined with the legal action of libel), Love’s case was one of the first — and a very high-profile case at that — to go to trial. [1] Twitter is not a newspaper, yet individuals or corporations can make statements and publish materials that have the potential to reach massive audiences. Holmes, et al. v. Love (2016) helped set the precedent that courts use today when deciding whether or not statements one makes on the internet qualify as libel.

In 2008, Courtney Love hired attorney Rhonda Holmes to help investigate “missing funds from the estate of Kurt Cobain, Love’s late husband.” [2] For a variety of reasons, the two parted ways less than a year later, with each privately (and later publicly) accusing the other of inappropriate behavior — such as Love refusing to return calls, and accusations of substance abuse. Then, in June of 2010, Love tweeted:

“@noozjunkie I was f**king [sic] devastated when Rhonda J Holmes Esq of San Diego was bought off @fairnewsspears perhaps you can get a quote” @CourtneyLoveUK [3],

Which was subsequently deleted from Love’s twitter page, as she claimed she had mistaken the public tweet for a direct message. The message was already made public — and therefore effectively permanent due to the nature of the internet — so Holmes was made aware of the publicized claim Love had put on the internet for everyone to see. Regardless of Love’s intentions, and if the tweet truly was intended as a private message, the damage had been done. So, Holmes sued Love for libel. According to Cornell Law School’s definition, libel is a form of defamation “expressed by print, writing, pictures, signs, effigies, or any communication embodied in physical form that is injurious to a person's reputation, exposes a person to public hatred, contempt or ridicule, or injures a person in his/her business or profession.” [4] While the tweet certainly could be seen as harmful to Holmes’s reputation by indicating that she was bought off by a third-party — the questions nonetheless centered around Love’s intentions.

Courtney Love tried to get the motion thrown out, “claiming that she should not be held accountable for her statements on Twitter because hyperbole and sensational language are normal and to be expected on social media.” [5] This was unsuccessful. At trial, Love used ignorance of Twitter and computers in her defense — how could she have intended for everyone to see the tweet if she had no knowledge it was to be made public? Her defense was in the fact she quickly deleted the tweet, after realizing it was not a part of a private conversation. After “eight days of testimony and statements” the jury found Love innocent. [6] The jury “determined that although Love’s statement had a natural tendency to injure Holmes’ business, they did not believe she knew the statement was false” — with the intention serving as the crux of determining guilt. If Love had no intention of harming Holmes’s reputation or business, then she could not be charged with libel. Additionally, Holmes’s team saw their own victory despite the jury ruling in favor of Love. During the trial, the court found that Love’s original statement — which tarnished Holmes’s reputation — was in fact, false! Both parties walked away from the trial feeling at least somewhat vindicated. But the message sent in Holmes, et al. v. Love will not be limited to disputes between people over a mistweeted message. Future posts which disparage another will be subject to the same legal analysis that was seen in Holmes. This is important, as more of cultural dialogue is posted to the internet — intentionally. Making claims that can be seen as false or libelous on Twitter is currently allowed. Unless future cases make their way up to higher courts, and see different judgments, it is likely that one can make false claims online — for now.

Platonic Readings of Ponyo (And How The West Likes to Ruin Everything)

We all love a good love story. It can be really satisfying to watch two characters slowly falling in love.

Unless they’re five. Then it’s kind of uncomfortable.

Welcome to the mildly disturbing world of the West taking platonic relationships and then forcing them to be romantic, even if the characters are five years old. All key quotes will be from the Japanese dub with English subtitles provided by Netflix.

All the anime I watched in high school is finally paying off.

“Ponyo… loves… Sosuke!”

Let’s start with some basic Japanese lessons. In Japanese, Ponyo says “Ponyo… Sōsuke… suki!” Ponyo uses suki, which is one of three popular ways of expressing love. There is aishite, a deeply passionate proclamation of love; daisuki, a more common expression to mean a softer love between couples; and suki, a word more suitably translated to ‘like’, which is more of a fondness, something used in a casual setting.

Wu argues that Ponyo ‘expresses her fondness for Sosuke’ in this moment (2016:197). The love that Ponyo displays for Sosuke here is something distinctly more childlike and innocent. It is little more that a proclamation of friendship or a slightly deeper bond.

“To become human, she requires a man that will understand and accept her.”

Granmamare does not use language that is inherently romantic – there is no mention of ‘love’. The phrasing of ‘a man’ implies a heterosexual bond which can be interpreted as romantic, but in and of itself, the sentence is mostly read as platonic.

And then the English dub happens. In her godlike voice, Cate Blanchett says, “To become a real girl, she needs you to accept and love her as she truly is.” This reading is inherently more romantic, using the dreaded L-word (not Lesbians, Scott Pilgrim, calm down) to force a romantic context onto Ponyo and Sosuke’s relationship.

“I’ll always love Ponyo, whether she’s a fish, a human, or in between.”

Here we go again with the use of suki. At this point, Ponyo and Sosuke are ‘beloved friend[s]’ (Wu 2016:199) and share a deep bond. This quote involves acceptance as a major factor of Sosuke’s relationship with Ponyo, and still uses the childish and censored suki to infer a promise more than a romance. They are not in love, per say, but perhaps there is a hint of something more when they grow up.

In the English dub, Sosuke declares, “I love all the Ponyos! It’s a big responsibility, but I’ll always love her.” This child is five years old. This sentence reads as a declaration of love and gives off more confession vibes. Yikes.

The original Japanese dub wrote Ponyo to ultimately be a piece about the friendship between two young children, capitalising on the nostalgia of youth and childhood friends to create a compelling piece that made me cry within the first twenty minutes of the film.

The English dub, however, made something almost creepy and difficult to watch.

And thus concludes my argument on sub v. dub and why sub is infinitely better 100% of the time. That is a joke, Twitter stans please don’t cancel me.

What do people think of Tanya? AKA: Actually, a lot of people agree with Lehrgen

Summary: WHOOOOO BOY. You know it’s going to be fun when my subsections have to have their own subsections. Briefly, there is the Good [people who like Tanya both personally and professionally], the Bad [people who like/love Tanya professionally but not personally], and the Ugly [people who ideally, Tanya will never speak to, look at, send mail to, or be in the general vicinity of ever again].

I would say most people fall into the “Bad” category - they recognize her value as an officer, sometimes to a worshipful degree, but on a personal level range anywhere from thinking she’s a creepy child to actively disliking her. Unfortunately for Tanya, the people that fall into the Ugly category are as a rule higher-ranking than the ones in the Good category, and most people in the Bad category seem to like her specifically in her military role, and it is questionable they’d want her as even a coworker outside of that, let alone as a friend.

The Good

People who’re in here: People who have only ever heard of Tanya in the context of the Silver Wings award, people she interacts with in the Imperial Navy; rando soldiers; someone kinda high up in the later-war Eastern Army command; Ugar

A naval officer does assess Tanya as having a predatory look, but doesn’t seem to think particularly badly of it, he just notes it, and then says “Degurechaff was a fellow soldier he could be proud of, which was why he extended his hand in utmost seriousness to wish her well.”

Rando Soldiers

There’s no real good single quote on this, but over time Tanya comes in to reinforce various units and leaves behind various impressions, ranging through Good, Bad, and Ugly, but anyway, there almost have to be low & middle ranking officers and soldiers who are presumably nothing but grateful to Tanya for rescuing them, even though we never get much of anything from their perspective.

Others

A superior officer of Tanya’s in Eastern Army command, in V5/C1, gets a transfer request for Tanya’s unit and reflects he is sad to be losing her.

Ugar - I don’t have down any specific pieces, but IMO it comes across in the LNs that Ugar is generally well-disposed to Tanya and doesn’t have the positive professional/negative personal thoughts that most other people close to her do.

The Bad

If I screw up on the battlefield, she’ll definitely kill me. That’s how threatened I felt by the instructor who just had to also be my advisor…I wanna cry.”

[Grantz] “This was the major who had once said during a speech at the academy that deadweight should be killed…This is crazy. No one said it aloud, but it was the look on everyone’s faces. This was a nighttime mission to abduct enemy soldiers…Magic Second Lieutenant Warren Grantz realized he was shaking. My survival instinct was screaming. I wanted to avoid the war, the combat, the killing. I was hesitating. But one glance from Major von Degurechaff was enough to subjugate that instinct. She was far more terrifying…I was so terrified I hardly felt like myself anymore…How could the major just calmly sing a hymn?”

[203rd banter] Visha asks if anyone wants to trade places with her so she doesn’t have to be with Tanya all the time, and Weiss and Grantz are not itching to take her up on the offer.

[Grantz] Is really, really bothered by how chill Tanya seems to be about Arene.

Tanya doesn’t get what she wants, is then pissed, and it gives off weird abusive-parent vibes where all her children try to flee and not be present, and for the ones who have to be (Weiss & Visha), they take it by flinching, cowering, praying to God for Tanya not to explode, etc.

[Visha] “Reality is far too unreal. She’s crazy. There’s something strange about her...The colonel cackled – no, she giggled, smiling like a child. It was positively surreal to see her eyeing the enemy with her tender gaze and licking her lips. She snickered, but what was so funny? She was terrifying...Dripping red liquid. Pink things that used to be humans, flying everywhere. And opposite that scene was a beaming little girl. It was so surreal, it made more sense for me to suppose I had gone insane. No, maybe I really did go insane. The sight of my superior officer nodding with satisfaction and beginning a confession of her faith was horrific. I didn’t get even a glimmer of madness from her beautiful, innocent eyes. They were the eyes of a stubborn servant of logic, full of pure reason. But that’s what was horrific: those eyes stuck on that doll-like face.”

Tanya has some good banter with her Kampfgruppe soldiers and it seems like everyone’s getting along.

T: ‘Are you saying you throw yourself into the slaughter purely, justly – sane and sober? Don’t make me laugh. That’s a broken man talking. Going to war after downing some liquid courage with a grimace is much more human.’ He frowns for a moment, perhaps thinking to argue back, and then whines, ‘So are you drunk, then, Colonel?’ <= yes, a random officer from Tanya’s Kampfgruppe just asked if she was drunk and that’s why she’s always throwing herself into battle so excitedly.

T: ‘Glad you’re safe, Lieutenant.’ V: ‘Thank you, ma’am. That said, I would have rather you spared me from getting caught up in that attack.’ T: ‘What choice did I have?’ V: ‘What is that supposed to mean?’ Serebryakov puffs her cheeks out in a pout, which is surely a sign that she’s feeling better. <= Tanya, Visha wanted you to apologize, not excuse yourself, damn!

Zettour

“He doesn’t know whether they should praise her original ideas or call her insane.”

“Apparently, she hasn’t forgotten that she once said she wanted a battalion. She, a first lieutenant, to a brigadier general…something liable to provoke antipathy? She’s already done that.”

“The smirk on Tanya’s face reminds Zettour of some unpleasant rumors he’s heard about her.”

Zettour both remains horrified that Tanya was able to speak so frankly about a world war, yet he is sympathetic to the fact that she could do it because she understood what would happen.

Tells Rudersdorf that he “unwaveringly trusts” her military decisions.

Tanya comes to Zettour to request better units than he’s given her. He finds the request beyond arrogant, seeing as how pressed they are for men, especially for the fact that this is shortly after the Moscow situation and her battalion has “gone too far and been a handful”.

“Somehow, he didn’t think there could be that many damaged kids in the Empire like this young teen back from the battlefield. And actually, regardless of how he felt about it as a soldier, personally, the idea of interacting with them was terrifying.”

“But Degurechaff was unfazed and inquired about their experience with killing people. She saw people as products, and she was asking if they had been tested – that was the nuance. Could such a completely utilitarian view of people even be taught? Certainly, the army is an organization that pays attention to individual functions. Substitutability and cost consciousness are two factors hounding everyone. But can you really judge a human being by those criteria alone?...That innocent face and her straight back made her look something like a surreal doll. Doesn’t…Doesn’t anyone think this is strange?”

Zettour is mentioned to have originally had the same doubts about Tanya as Lehrgen, but after her performance he claims he is ready to “swallow any pill, no matter how bitter” (I think working with Tanya being the bitter pill) to win the war.

Zettour gives Tanya a little discretion to commandeer some equipment, she takes a lot of discretion. Zettour sort of laughs at off saying “this was Degurechaff” but does also mention that Tanya’s actions “amounted to a borderline interference in Supreme Command.”

Zettour is impressed with how Tanya has trained Grantz and thinks that if she wasn’t so good in the field, he’d put her in education.

“Sure, Degurechaff may have been broken, but not as an officer.”

Rudersdorf

Rudersdorf says that Tanya has a “distinct” [read: probably means difficult] personality, but if he just divided people into useful and not useful, she was useful.

Zettour and Rudersdorf debate Tanya, and he mentions that he only thinks she is talented in the military realm.

Tanya has a misunderstanding with her CO on the Rhine front. He wants her to train some new recruits normally, she mistakes it as saying “well, kill as few of them as possible, but do what you gotta do,” she gets kind of reprimanded over it.

Tanya goes wild on her base commander when he won’t let her sortie to Brest to prevent the French army from evacuating. <= Oddly, IIRC, no one ever like, apologizes to Tanya for not believing her, which is kinda rude, so mostly the incident reflects negatively on her instead of being a balanced: ok she did violate some rules, but...maybe if we’d listened to her we’d have avoided the rest of the fucking war, so seems like it might have been called for?

“The most important evaluations during a war are the ones from the battlefield, and those were all over the place.” <= Romel, re: Tanya’s personnel file

“The second was that although the evaluations were contradictory, she had achieved enough that she was considered an outstanding soldier. Awkwardly, regardless of how she was as an officer, as an individual mage, she was thought very highly of. Her number of kills was among the highest on the Rhine front.”

“In any case, strictly as a mage, she was unrivaled. As an officer, too, she was by no means incompetent. So they must have been giving her to him as reinforcements and as an excuse to get her out of their hair. Honestly, he felt like they were foisting off their problem on him. ‘They’re telling me to take a mad dog out on a walk with no leash?’ He let slip a complaint. Maybe it was just prejudice, but that wasn’t what it felt like to General von Romel. After all, he was basically being asked to bet on a bad hand.”

Everyone on the General Staff realizes the huge amount of fallout from Tanya attacking Moscow. The backstory of this is that when Tanya asked for permission, the General Staff thought she was just going to do a fly-by and freak them out, not attack the city. It pretty much kills any opportunity they had to negotiate a quick settlement with Russia in the cradle.

Romel

Romel’s first meeting with Tanya pretty much goes: “so arrogant it’s invigorating...unbelievably insolent...in addition to her self-important attitude, it exuded heavy sarcasm...not only was she arrogant, she was clearly horribly warped.”

“Any commissioned officer would understand just from hearing her make that one comment why the Northern and Western Groups couldn’t control her. Having a mage battalion drop out of the command structure was almost like losing a whole division” <= ie, Tanya’s previous superiors must have really disliked her to give her up.

“She simply decided she would be a patriot if it was good for the nation. In short, she’s a capable lunatic, but the bad part is she doesn’t realize she’s twisted…She’s crazy. And competent. And more sincere than anyone I’ve ever known.”

“Without a doubt, she’s going to end up being the most horrible person I know. And she’ll probably also be one of my most reliable friends on the battlefield.”

Romel reflects that she is a mad dog, and that she is an ego-crushing entity for the average officer. <= while Romel never brings this up, this has a *ton* of important real-world implications for Tanya, especially assuming men still have more than a little trouble listening to women outside the military. Even if you believe the best rumors about Tanya, you still might not want to hire her because she’s going to be better than you, and most people hate that feeling.

Tanya goes to the Eastern Front, and Romel reflects that he is sad to lose her and that once you got used to her, he found her easy to work with.

The Ugly

Tanya is happy that Dacia has zero airpower. She displays her happiness by smiling maniacally and skipping around her tent. Everyone thinks Tanya is happy that they just got invaded again and the war is growing and she can go kill people.

A kinda random infantry guy is still having nightmares about Tanya in like, 1960, and reflects back on how he felt when he heard Tanya casually call for friendly fire to go right through where her men are flying. He questions why anyone listens to her.

“But when I replay the memories in my mind, I can’t help but shout, You monster! A hero, a star, and outstanding magic officer. You, ma’am, were a great officer. To all of us imperial soldiers serving on the Rhine lines, you were a god...Yeah, she’s a god – an immensely powerful one who presides over life and death. Her words, brimming with a spine-chilling anger, swept over the area as if she was planning to attract all the enemy hostility like moths to a flame. Major von Degurechaff had bared her fangs. It invited a violent reaction. The Republic wanted to hunt the devil. In other words, they devoted all humanity’s wisdom to killing the god of death. Gods don’t die, but those of us next to them? …They were right to call her a god of death. She killed the enemy, and the enemy killed our men. Then the noble major, with a glance at all the dead in the mud, took her leave. Fucking hell.” <= and you thought Lehrgen hated her. But, again, real-world implications of this could very well be that post-war, Tanya is a total persona-non-grata as someone that had a high degree of influence on how rabidly everyone fought against the Empire, and how the Empire was treated in the aftermath. I don’t make it out quite that bad, but it could be really rough if someone wanted to make it that way.

International Post-Hoc View on Arene

“They gunned people down like they were so many targets in a firing exercise. They got ‘points’ for shooting people. People had blocked themselves in, so they used heavy-explosion formulas to bombard whole districts. Those are all painful memories of the tragedy being shared today. Even counting only the confirmed deaths, the city of Arene lost half its population that day. In order to avoid the heavy responsibility for each soldier that would result if they went into the city and had to visually confirm their targets, they aimed to cause widespread fires via artillery bombardment from positions surrounding the city. A portion of the documents shows that they had chosen targets that were likely to spread the flames as proof-of-concept for firestorm.” <= the reporter doesn’t know this, but Tanya is the person that comes up with that proof-of-concept for creating a firestorm, as well as the person that creates the case to make it legal to repress a civilian revolt with a military. To me it seems like Arene is presented as the Tanyaverse Bombing of Dresden, except how it would be viewed if Germany had won WWII.

Tanya thinks about how if the Empire loses, her reputation is in the toilet if it becomes known that she did this.

Western Army Command

The one who thought of this was either a lawyer so cunning the devil would invite them to join forces or a criminal. This way of thinking is practically inhuman. Only a devil who forgot their reason and conscience in their mother’s womb could come up with such a tactic. That someone would equate having the technical capabilities for an operation with actually doing it…Are they deranged?”

“Luckily, an army corps commander summoning a mere major is extremely rare. Exceptional though it was, it meant there was a chance he might have to summon this monster again someday…Doing his best not to look directly at the monster straightening her posture in front of him, the army corps commander accepted that it was for work and met her.”

“The principles behind the actions of this major in front of him were impossible to understand using anyone’s logic or emotions. Her inorganic eyes compelled you to conclude that her thoughts, her frameworks, her way of being were all warped.”

This guy keeps going on and on more than I have here, tbh he’s one of Tanya’s main haters. It’s fine Tanya, it’s only the guy in charge of Western Army Command, who listens to him?

“I hope no one noticed that I just flinched, thought the army corps commander, sensing that he was distinctly afraid of her…No worries about what? He deeply wanted to ask what she was planning to do, but he held back. He told himself it was surely better not to know…But there is probably no one more suited to being a soldier than you. Perhaps you feel at home in hell on the Rhine front.”

Implied Future View of Tanya/The Parable of the Salamander

“From what I heard, the Salamander is adorable and very clever. If you show it affection, it’ll get attached to you. Like a German shepherd, it can become a trustworthy member of the family. Sometimes it begs or plays tricks, but apparently, everyone ends up overlooking these things. Of course, Mrs. Legen grew angry and screamed that it went too far, but…Well, in the end, everyone doted on the Salamander. Because when it’s even more reliable than a German shepherd, how could you not? At some point, though, the Salamander’s requests and pranks grew to be too much. But what do you think happened when no one was sympathetic to dependable Mrs. Legen, who had continued to angrily scold it the whole time? That’s right. No one was able to stop the Salamander! Of course, the Salamander loved and cherished everyone. But sadly, there was no one to teach it right from wrong. So the Salamander never realized that everyone disliked it. Soon it had exhausted everyone’s patience.” <= for reference, Tanya commands the Salamander Kampfgruppe; this is told as a cautionary tale that Andrew says circulates throughout the future Empire.

Your Author’s Take on Tanya’s Reputation vs Reality

The above should have real-world implications for Tanya’s personal life as far as friends, and for her career both within and beyond the military once the war is over, because, you know, people talk. Anyone who phones up an old pal because said old pal had some quality time with Tanya and they’re curious what she’s like is probably not going to receive a glowing personal recommendation, and the higher up those people are in society, the worse it is likely to be.

Even for people who think she has a genius applicable beyond the military sphere, outside of extreme circumstances people generally don’t want to employ anyone, no matter how smart, who is known for being unpredictable, uncontrollable, arrogant in the extreme, abusive towards coworkers, manipulative, possibly just straight up evil, etc etc. Within the military, after the war I would expect her to be hampered by the fact that a lot of people won’t want to work with her unless there’s a really pressing reason they need her skillset.

I can’t believe I’m bringing this show up from years past, but she’s sort of in the same position as Dr. House from the TV show - famously talented; famously toxic in the workplace; only one place will employ him, and at a much lower salary than his reputation should command, and even so, thinking that he could get away with that in real life is pushing the suspension of disbelief for the show. The same goes with friendships - very few well-adjusted adults are willing to befriend The Cool Asshole in real life.

When it does happen IRL, those relationships usually aren’t healthy & happy, and can easily end up with borderline-emotionally-abusive undertones because the follower is afraid of losing the leader, and molds themselves to fit what the other person wants so as to be an unchallenging, uncritical presence in the life of their idol.

For a story about an adult man reincarnated as a young girl fighting in magical WW1.5, YS manages to put a surprisingly interesting twist on the Main Character is a Cool Asshole Without Consequences model, with Tanya getting away with it in the present due to extreme circumstances, not realizing that the war is the only reason she’s getting away with it, and facing many implied future consequences for it.

While it’s entirely possible and often completely necessary to handwave Tanya overcoming this for storytelling purposes, as you can’t go many places story-wise if Tanya is as screwed as it sounds like she’s going to be, standard reality is that she’s gonna need to do some serious legwork to dig herself out of the hole she’s in, both personally and professionally.

I appreciate that the crux of a good Tanya story is often Tanya thinking normal reality will apply to her but then bypassing normal reality to end up somewhere she never intended on being, much to her chagrin, and readers therefore may feel adhering to realism violates the reality of Tanyaverse.

For the purposes of this story, I have chosen to stick with where the preponderance of evidence leads and apply a good amount of normal reality to Tanya, because that is exactly what allows me to proceed along a different avenue of Tanya misunderstanding things and ending up somewhere she never intended on being, keeping to the spirit of Tanya stories. Plus, Tanya doesn’t seem very intent on growing as a person in the absence of consequences and I need my character growth drivers.

...and I can’t avoid admitting I still end up handwaving some portion of those consequences for Tanya, since, as stated above, it’s...hard to go anywhere with a story if you don’t.

what’s in eternity? a breakdown of electro users and visions

so one thing that always bothered me is how Raiden’s heavenly virtue is stated to be eternity. It’s extremely difficult to try and draw a line between that concept and any of the vision holders of the electro aspect. however, upon reflection, i believe that the key word that describes electro vision holders, and even Raiden herself, is centered on stability, or a lack of it.

under the cut is gonna be the brief explanation as to how it connects + quotes to support it so strap in

Lisa: The first one we meet, so a good place to start! Lisa is often characterized as being rather neutral towards her vision, seemingly not needing it to continue her research, which comes across as her having a good sense of stability about her life. Additionally, her voiceline “more about lisa-V” is:

A Vision may seem like a great tool, but one day, the power one accumulates always finds a way to turn back on you. Should such a day come for me, so long as you're around... Ah, never mind.

It’s an interesting comment, and under the context of the dynamic between instability and stability with electro users, it makes a lot more sense.

Fischl: Fischl is another Mond vision user, and I think her vision is a result of needing stability more than having it. It’s canon that she is very isolated and doesn’t have a good grasp on things, so puts on the persona of the Prinzessin for a sense of comfort. It’s very obvious from her story about how she got her vision:

So, is Oz just an imaginary friend who only exists as a figment of Fischl's subconscious?

Our story begins with the royal heirloom, Edelstein der Dunkelheit — that is to say, Fischl's Vision.

When her wish was acknowledged, the raven Oz and her Vision both appeared before her eyes.

Her wish for a sense of stability gave her a vision. Pretty cut n dry in my eyes!

Razor: Our final stop in Mond, local wolfboy! I know everyone jokes about him being given a vision because he’s a bupy, which is totally fair, but, *gestures to my corkboard*.

One day, during a lightning storm, an Abyss Mage ambushed Razor from behind and dragged him away. The wolf pack ran to his aid and put up a fearless fight, but every last one of them was defeated by the Abyss Mage. As he looked on helplessly at his dear companions being harmed, Razor let out an almighty roar like that of a cornered animal.

"Lupical!"

Lupical! Lupical! Lupical! Fated family is everything to Razor, and gives him a sense of stability. In turn, however, it destabilizes him, as seen by the ending of the first chapter of his quest. Since his wolven companions cannot accept him, he’s forced to leave his sense of stability behind for the unstable future.

Keqing: Our favorite heretic arrives. Keqing is in the same category as Lisa, being satisfied by her position in life and being given a vision seemingly on the merit of having a good two feet on the ground.

She once believed that this purple crystal had stolen the pride due originally to her, and that it was both a challenge and an insult from the gods.

...

With the passage of time, Keqing came to appreciate the Vision. She realized that this item did not actually have any divine will imbued within it, and indeed had numerous practical uses, and as such chose to use it.

Her vision originally made her instable, causing her fits of frustration because she felt devalued by her own work knowing people would only view her as accomplished because she held a vision, but eventually became stable.

Beidou: Beidou is our lovely lady pirate and the last electro vision holder we know of currently! Her life is very unstable, moving from place to place purely for a sense and desire to see more, often leaving her homeland for months in pursuit. Her vision, in this case, gives her stability; not only did she earn it during a perilous situation, it helped her gain control of it.

Thus descended a Vision to the slayer of the sea monster, its violet glow as stunning as lightning, and its immaculate, jeweled form a treasure more precious than dragon blood. A suitably divine gift for the hero who subdued Haishan.

i think it’s interesting that under this thesis, beidou and razor share more in common with vision acquisition

Childe: While he isn’t a vision holder of electro, he is a delusion holder, and it’s pretty easy to spot the fact that his delusion destabilizes him, making him manic and running wild with energy, and additionally causing harm and extra stress under the foul legacy transformation.

Raiden: and to round this post off, the archon herself! the vision hunt decree and attempting to set visions into the hands of the thousand-arm statue comes across like a desperate attempt to try and gain control because something is spinning out of hers and she doesn’t quite know how to cope.

Final Fantasy IV Review

Year: 1991

Original Platform: Super Nintendo (Originally introduced to Western audiences as Final Fantasy II, since the real II and III were not released outside of Japan at the time.)

Also available on: Nintendo DS, PSP (Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection), GameBoy Advance, Playstation One (Final Fantasy Chronicles), Steam (DS remake)

Version I Played: PSP

Synopsis:

Cecil Harvey is Batman a dark knight who follows orders from King Baron. The king tasks Cecil and his partner Kain with taking the crystals from the surrounding nations and cities. Cecil questions his king’s motives, leading to the revelation of a grand conspiracy. Cecil then goes on a quest to right his wrongs.

Gameplay:

The novel feature of this game was the ATB system – Active Timed Battle. This means that instead of you and the enemy waiting for your respective turns one at a time, each character takes their turn according their respective speed. One character may be slower than the other, so they will take longer to be able to perform an action. Basically, with ATB, if you wait too long to think about what to do on your turn, the enemy can hit you - JUST AS IF YOU WERE REALLY BATTLING IN REAL LIFE.

While Final Fantasy IV introduced ATB, it did not utilize the ATB gauge in actual battles. The ATB gauge is a visual bar during battle that shows your character’s speed. Whenever it’s filled, your character can perform an action. The gauge itself was first seen later in Final Fantasy V. Later remakes of Final Fantasy IV displayed the ATB gauge. Some configuration options were introduced later to give you the ability to change the battle system to active or wait. Putting it on wait would allow the timed battle to pause while you thought about what to do during your move.

Final Fantasy IV forsakes the customizable Job System and introduces characters with individual jobs. Kain is a dragoon, who can jump in the air and deal destructive damage. Rydia is a summoner. Yang is a monk. Etc, etc.

The Super Nintendo and PSP versions are more or less on par with each other in terms of difficulty. The Nintendo DS remake is really hard. Like REALLY hard. Like “throw-your-DS-across-the-room hard”. I myself have had trouble finishing it.

Graphics:

I haven’t played the original SNES version of Final Fantasy IV, but judging by the images it appears to be in this liminal state between NES and SNES. Not quite NES but not quite utilizing the full power of the SNES either.

The PSP version is somewhat reminiscent of the Anniversary Editions of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II, but it still has its own flair that outshines them.

Final Fantasy IV DS is pretty much a 3D remake in the same vein as Final Fantasy III DS, with an awesome opening FMV. The in-game cutscenes however now have VOICE ACTING.

Now, the PlayStation One version has a FMV sequence that hasn’t aged well at all. We’re talking worse than the Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II FMV sequences from PlayStation One. I can’t even find a good snapshot from Google Images, probably because nobody wants to look at them ever again. You can find it on YouTube though.

Story:

Final Fantasy IV is well known for being the first GOOD story in a Final Fantasy game. Cecil’s personal journey of redemption rung in the minds and hearts of audiences. There’s a nice balance of focusing on individual struggles and an epic adventure to save the world.

The cast of characters is pretty wide. Like Final Fantasy II, several secondary characters come and go. There is one difference but I don’t want to spoil anything. I guess the least I could say is that Final Fantasy IV subverts what to expect after having played Final Fantasy II.

Like Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV includes crystals as an important plot device. This time they hold enormous power that the villain Golbez wishes to obtain for nefarious means.

While the story is infinitely superior in storytelling to Final Fantasy II, there are still some silly moments. I could best describe the bulk of the story as “Cecil and friends are on a race to capture each crystal around the world but something always gets in the way at the last minute.” While for the most part the story is done well, there are seemingly cartoonish moments involving random trapdoors and bewitched dolls. One particular moment I found myself thinking, "So you're just going to stand there while he does that?"

But I think the most admirable part of the story is how they approach Cecil and Rosa’s romance. While most RPGs, especially today, try to hash in a childish romance subplot, Cecil and Rosa are that rare couple that are already together at the beginning of the game. Their love is tested throughout the story.

The most popular quote from this game involves a complicated matter of translation. Western releases of Final Fantasy games (and Japanese games in general) often had awkward translations. “You spoony bard!” is one such awkward translation that originates from this game.

The character who spoke this line, Tellah, is arguing with the character Edward. The translation came out at “spoony” due to the Japanese writers believing it was still used today in English. It’s an archaic term meaning “enamored in a silly or sentimental way”. It technically fits, but clearly, nobody uses that word anymore, and players laughed at how nonsensical it seemed.

While I don’t want to spoil why Tellah is angry at Edward, the scenario in question is dramatic, and so Tellah saying “idiot” or “moron” wouldn’t quite suffice. The original Japanese word that Tellah uses is “kisama”, which in the given context is akin to telling someone they are a “son of a bitch” or “bastard.” Western releases, especially North American, were very often censored and demanded less or no profanity.

Overall, Final Fantasy IV is the first notable story in the Final Fantasy series, way better and much more original than Final Fantasy II.

Music:

With the Super Nintendo, Uematsu was able to play with more sounds. The drumming that Uematsu had wanted in his battle themes is more apparent. He also added an accompaniment to the Prelude. The main theme of Final Fantasy IV is scattered throughout the score, just like a motif in a movie score. The main theme is the map theme, and I like how, for example, the theme changes to a different beat when you venture into the underworld. The main theme even pops up in the final battle, which to me is awesome because it illustrates the heroes collectively trying to banish evil.

In one interview with Uematsu, he stated he was a huge fan of Elton John. For some reason, after I read that, I totally see the main theme of Final Fantasy IV having an Elton John vibe, especially in the epilogue with the drums and the bass.

Red Wings, which is the theme for Baron’s elite air force of the same name, is notable for its unorthodox time signature. I swore I read that somewhere years ago but now I can’t find it, so if someone happens to come across it – let me know. The theme for the Red Wings sounds both heroic and sinister, referencing Baron’s underlying motives and Cecil’s dual nature.

Cecil and Rosa’s love theme is actually taught for schoolchildren in Japan as part of their music curriculum.

Uematsu pretty much matured at this point, in my opinion.

Notable Theme:

There are so many but my personal favorite is “Dreadful Fight”, a.k.a “Battle with the Four Fiends”.

I’ll also highlight the “Theme of Love”, because it needs to be out there as the first love theme for the Final Fantasy series.

Verdict:

Hands down, the perfect place for a beginner. You want to start getting into Final Fantasy? Start with Final Fantasy IV. The gameplay is easy to pick up. The story is simple and straightforward compared to the rest of the series but still effective. To those having played the later games first, it could seem trite. Unlike most of the Final Fantasy games, the different re-releases can be quite offer a different experience due to the translations, graphical changes, and differences in difficulty. At the end of the day, I would say any 2D version is fine, the best is probably the PSP version, but save the DS remake for later, since it is more difficult.

Direct Sequel?

Yes. Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection was released on the PSP in 2011. This is the version that I played. Square created two sequels for that collection: Final Fantasy IV: Interlude and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. I haven’t played them myself yet, but there is criticism surrounding their stories, which apparently pale greatly in comparison to Final Fantasy IV.

By the way, the PSP version starts by showing the new FMV opening to Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, not the one shown in Final Fantasy IV DS. That’s a minor change but it really irked me, because the sequel’s FMV opening therefore spoils some of the story if you never played it before. I guess they wanted to distance themselves from Final Fantasy IV DS. Even so, why not just play that opening when you select The After Years?
