#why did my stupid IT high school didn't teach me how to solder#To be fair#they didn't even teach me how to apply thermal compound to a CPU#legit only learned it during my apprenticeship#wish they taught me soldering too :(( fixing printers was fun but soldering would have been more useful#basically my headphones would use repairs#as in#they have a detachable wire#and the mini jack port is clearly damaged#A replacement port would probably run me around 15PLN#and uhhhh new headphones would run me at least 180PLN soooooo#yeahhh#I could always buy that port and ask my dad to try and replace it#I could ask him to lend me his soldering iron and attempt it myself??????? (he wouldn't lend me his soldering iron)#I could also look for a repair shop that'd do it but they'd probably take the equivalent of brand new headphones lol#mine were literally doing so well 10/10 they started fucking up at the beginning of the month#they're my little boyes I don't want to replace them#they're only like 3 years old

blog no 5 - i love reading so much
as the title says, i love reading. saturday last week (or the week before, i’m not quite sure, my perception of time has been quite warped recently) i went to the mall with my best friend and i bought the virgin suicides and lolita. i’m currently reading both, and i love them so much. lolita is a little harder to read due to the fact that it was written a while ago and it has a lot of words i’d never even seen, but overall is really good. i’ve just gotten to the bit when he’s living in mrs haze’s house and is trying to get closer to lo. the way nabakov writes makes humbert so endearing.
i’m halfway through the virgin suicides, at the bit where lux is having sex with guys on her roof, but i love it. apparently my mother had read it too. the very thought that my mother had her own thoughts and opinions that may have been similar to mine makes me sick to my stomach. but anyways, i think the virgin is a true work of art.
i also read a bit of american psycho, which i am about 60% through this week, i still love it.
unfortunately, i am still overly suicidal, and i don’t think my utter willingness to perish will leave me any time soon. but really, my problem is what is causing my suicidal state, not the presence of suicidal thoughts itself.
moving on, since today almost every store in my local mall had a black friday sale on, i went with my dad and i got two books, the great gatsby and crime and punishment. i’m really excited to read crime and punishment, i will after i finish the virgin suicides. then i’ll probably buy the idiot, also by dostoevsky.
i left yet another friend group and have found a new one, also including my friend group. and my other out of school friend is also getting closer to me, which i love because she’s so funny and cool.
yesterday we had the school known pedo teacher as our replacement teacher as our usual was away, and while he was talking he said something funny and i smiled, he noticed and stared directly at me while he was talking. he gave us some work to do and then said ‘girls in the back’ (which was my and my friend) ‘do you have enough space?’ i said yes and he asked ‘can i trust you to do your work?’. he didn’t ask anyone else this, which was odd, i said yes, and then he said ‘you’d never lie to me, would you?’ i said of course not. weird.
then my friend had to charge her laptop but couldn’t find any charging ports, so she asked him if there were any others she couldn’t see, he moved her to a bench in front of his desk to charge her laptop, then he asked me my name and if i’d like to sit with her. i said yes and moved to her, where he chatted with me (the conversation was always initiated by him) the whole time, and with nobody else. he mostly spoke about how life was before everything was digital. he also had a favourite student (a girl older than myself) who kept coming around and he let her sit behind his desk while we played a game because everyone finished their work. he himself said he was his favourite. at the end he was about to dismiss us and i was holding my books and my copy of lolita, which was on the outside, plain to see, although i’m not sure whether the title could be seen or not. he asked me if it was a school assignment and i said no, just for fun. he said it (reading) was a great way to get my literacy levels up, then dismissed us. other than that, he was normal, and he seems nice enough.

Around the world with my baby daughter.
Article for traveling parents.
Finally I got just a little bit of free time and maybe I could write several posts about traveling with my baby daughter. Right now we are in Dominican Republic, Thaissia is sleeping and I’m using this bit of time to share our experiences and how we are managing.
From her very early days Thaissia was already traveling around France, and I did write a couple articles devoted to those trips. When she turned 2.5 months, we left France for Saint Petersburg, Russia and then took a train over to Moscow to visit family. Later when she was almost 5 months, we took off to California. At the age of 8 months we were in Dominican Republic and we are still here spending the winter and traveling around a bit more seriously.
As for flying in airplanes, Thaissia does it like a grown up. She doesn’t cry, sleeps in my arms, eats, plays with me and sometimes wants me to carry her around the cabin so she can look and smile at people. During the flights we never used any baby gear (like infant airplane seat from amazon) except for sling or baby carrier. Her habits and the ability to fly easy can of course change in the future, she might become more capricious and demanding… For now she is fine and it is great.
Lets talk about everyday life on the go and baby travel gadgets. In France and Russia Thaissia was still a little baby and everything was rather simple – elastic (Je porte mon bebe) or cotton sling wrap– Amazonas brand (and no stroller), foldable travel bed-bag (and no separate crib), car seat, baby bath tub with seat or hammock, medicine and first-aid kit, diaper backpack for long walks (I just adapted my regular day backpack for baby needs), blanket on the floor with some toys hanging over it (baby gym). In Petersburg we also had a baby chaise longue at the balcony. Our most important accessory has always been a sling wrap and starting from the age of 6 months we replaced it with baby carrier Ergobaby 360. This thing is vital and super useful for traveling and everyday life. But not all parents got their backs ready, so train yourselves in advance.
When Thaissia learned how crawl, in the States I had to get her some more baby gear… Besides a couple different baby gyms from Ikea, we got a huge blanket on the floor, that would cover almost the entire room, and later I had to buy a spacious 6-panel baby gate (Summer Infant), which I was using as a gate only in order to separate that part of the room where I didn’t want my little one to crawl to… I purchased all kind of baby safety things, but we only used outlet plug covers and mini night light. We have a bunch of other safety gadgets (like cabinet and toilet seat locks, silicone corner protectors), but because of constant traveling and moving from one house to another, we still didn’t have a chance to try all that stuff out. For our beach days I bought a baby tent, but we used it for only about a month, then my baby didn’t want to lie in one place anymore… Also at home we had a fit ball, a great thing for exercises with your baby!
I breast feed, its healthy, pleasant and comfortable, never have to worry about any bottles or formula. In California I started giving Thaissia additional food, so I got a mini blender (380 ml) that can be USB-charged. We used it for 3 months, while I needed to make puree. Now I just use a fork to mash some food in a plate as my baby got 8 teeth.
Sleeping question. We have been co-sleeping from the very beginning. Whatever people may say, it works for us perfectly. So we never had a separate baby bed. Just the first five months Thaissia was sleeping in a foldable baby bed-bag that was standing next to me in a big bed. When we travelled this bed was easily transformed into a diaper bag. Later when my baby grew out of this magic bed, I got a long braided bumper pillow and used it to delimit her space from mine. When we went traveling I didn’t take this pillow with us of course and now I just use rolled towels to separate us in bed. We can sleep without those towels of course but then Thaissia will take the whole bed leaving me on the edge. Also important (if possible) that bed would be a low one and would stand next to a wall on one side and on the other side its good to have a carpet, a blanket or a small mattress, so in case of falling, there would be something soft on the floor.
Here in Dominican Republic Thaissia learnt to sit and stand up practically all at the same time, and looks like soon she will start walking… Also she really loves bathing in the ocean with me! Maybe soon she will also start swimming? J An inflatable sit up bath tub, that I got specially for this trip, only served us for a short time. Now I can take my baby with me in the shower and she can stand there while I wash us (a bit harder to wash her head though). If she needs just a quick rinse, I can do that in the sink. One of my most needed travel gadgets is the pocket waterproof beach blanket with stakes (its super thin and light). We don’t care about wind or sand anymore! Speaking of two main tropical problems – sun and mosquitoes – yes, you do need all kinds of creams and sprays and have to rent a place with nets on windows or at least a mosquito net over the bed. If there is no shade at all where you are walking, you might want to get a small SPF 50 umbrella and/or a pareo to cover up hand and legs of your little one while you carry him or her around. Fast drying wide brim hat and long sleeve rash guard SPF 50 are also a must, as for baby sun glasses you might not be lucky, because your little one might refuse to wear them.
Food theme is particularly interesting when traveling. In California, where we stayed for 3 months in the same place, and I was routinely making porridges and boiled veggies without salt and oil/butter. Now here in Dominican Republic apart from those homemade breakfast porridges I feed Thaissia whatever I have in my plate for dinner (fish, chicken, beef, bread, veggies and of course lots of different fruit!). Sometimes we are still using hard food feeder, but less and less now. An important question is where to sit your baby at home (on the go) and in the restaurant? At home I still use car seat which I got here for everyday use indoors. Here in the house we are renting we happen to have a good size stable kids chair in the kitchen. She can’t still sit in it all by herself of course, but I was able to secure her in it with baby seat strap that I bought on Amazon for this trip. It’s not going to fit every possible chair, but it’s cheap, takes almost no space in your luggage, so you can purchase a couple different models and experiment. How do we eat out?... However we can, we are very creative… If there is a high chair (which is rare) – that’s great, if there isn’t – fine, we will deal with it… We can make our own “baby chair” from several chairs and pillows, and even better if we can eat on some sofa (we do not promise it will be clean afterwards) or at the worst case scenario I can ask restaurant personnel to hold my baby while I quickly devoir food after a long walk… Sometimes it’s a lot more comfortable to eat while standing at the bar and your baby is attached to you in a carrier…
As for baby play yard while traveling, you can make it from whatever stuff you find around – flipped tables and chairs, boxes, pillows, mattresses, suitcase and other barriers… But you little one might learn how to crawl over all that stuff… It’s perfect if while traveling you can rent a one bedroom or a little house (not just a studio), where besides the bedroom, you will also have a living room and separate kitchen. So when you put your baby to sleep, you can sneak out of the room and just sit on the couch in that nice little living room and… write a story in your blog or crochet a new toy.
Toys… A whole separate topic! I crochet toys, and half of our suitcase is taken by toys – crocheted, wooden, rubber (just not plastic), developmental and just funny… You don’t need lots of toys all at once, you need to change them… So we still had to pack quite a lot of toys with us and change them from time to time.
Clothing… I though we could travel with just minimum of clothing. Not really. I think there has to be a good amount of baby clothing so that you would let you little one to get dirty as much as he or she wants. And you can avoid every day washing.
Of course it’s a thousand times easier to travel in three when Thaissia’s dad comes to visit us some place. Here in Dominican Republic, when three of us traveled around, I had a real holiday! But the two of us, me and my daughter, we can do just fine as well. Yes, I don’t get much time to relax and have to think one step ahead always. Our regular routine day without flying in airplanes, moving to a new place, without equipping the new house with all the necessary things and a baby zone, without going shopping for food and water, without traveling somewhere on local transport (which can be quite authentic, depending on where in the world we are at the moment), without visiting some nice faraway place, like a secluded beach or a national park, etc, etc., can never be dull and boring by definition. Make breakfast (fruits, porridge), and while Thaissia is still eating wash the dishes (or ants and some other tropical insects would come to feast), take everything needed on the beach or on the walk, not forget to put on sunscreen, put up a beach blanket in a good shady spot, sticking in stakes and taking away all rubbish (or whatever is on the ground) so the baby doesn’t eat it, prevent my little one from eating too much sand, find her a company to play with (she is super social and playing with other kids is essential), give her some water, give her a banana or an avocado or something else, give her water again, ouch she fell dooooown…., fold up the blanket and unfold it again in shade, walk a couple kilometers or more with Thaissia in the carrier and then walk back, bathe with her in the ocean (favourite activity!), laugh, “fly’, play while sitting down, “walk”, sing and dance, take a nap at home for a couple hours (while Thaissia is sleeping, if she is in her deep sleep, I can maybe do some stuff on internet, sweep the floor, make a salad, wash my hair, crochet a toy, buy some airlines tickets… etc), feed my baby many times during the day and change her diaper just as many times, take some photos, have a coffee with something sweet, not forget to have dinner and not let Thaissia eat everything from my plate, wash my baby and take a shower myself, wash beach clothing and hang it to dry, read some books with Thaissia and play with her, finally put her to bed and fall asleep myself (or not.. while she is asleep, make some porridge or chicken for tomorrow, do some stuff at the computer, work on pictures from the camera or crochet)… and so on and so forth in different variations, it’s fun.
Is it easy for me? No, absolutely not. But I’m not complaining and not going to talk about those days when it’s super hard, when I have to solve all kinds of problems, when I don’t know where we are going to stay or when am I finally going to get some sleep, for example. Of course it is not like that when we are traveling, but more so when I’m working and Thaissia has to stay with a babysitter (but this is a whole different story)…
I am indeed very very happy and I do everything possible to make Thaissia smile and surprise her all the time. I love her so much and want to show her the whole world! Even though she is so little and doesn’t understand a lot of things (or she understands them in her own way, not like I do), she enjoys the sun and the warm weather, she loves to splash in the ocean and play in the sand, she is curious to see animals and colourful flowers, she adores new tasty foods and really likes to meet people and smile at them! Thaissia is happy when I am happy, and backwards. My baby absorbs everything that is around her and every day she is more and more curious about the world. Also daily she hears all the five languages that I speak.
Finally I would like to note that before I was traveling with an 11-13 kg backpack, now I also got a big suitcase, BUT my daughter and me don’t really need at least one half of this suitcase, and we can kind of do without the second half as well if we try… But in order to be able to travel this light with a baby you have to train. I promise myself that next time our suitcase will be smaller!

I have been in Sunset Port a few days. I came to finish my Veterinary degree here. Why I stay? Why shouldn’t I? My brother and his fiancee live here. I get to know my nieces and be close to the ones I love. As far as I see it I have tons of reasons to stay.
Of course! We can all identify with the sentiment. Well, at least some of us. [LAUGHTER] What do you do in Sunset Port?
I’m sure you can. Family tends to mean a lot to most of us. Like I said I’m a here to finish my degree. So I am a student. I’m also looking for a part time job so if you’ve heard of anything, any tips are welcome. Otherwise I’m just curious and excited to explore this new city.

BIOGRAPHY

Charlotte Sloan. Named with the intention of creating a free and independent woman, her name meaning 'free'. The tale of her birth, during a full moon, was a night her mother loved to tell the tale of. Because it was the night when she finally became a mother, and threw herself into the role with passion, a bit much some might add. She had great aspirations for her daughter, set ideas of who she was to be and where her life should take her. But she never stopped to ask if her daughter wanted to reach those aspirations, or who she wanted to be. Hell, she didn’t much seem to care that her baby girl might want something different for herself. The most important thing was always what she, and Selene’s father wanted for their child.
Not surprisingly, Charlotte grew up being chastised, advised, steered and scrutinized by her mother, and sometimes her father. She often felt set up for failure, given that she was indeed not the girl her mother wanted her to be. She wasn’t outgoing or a natural leader. Nor was she bold and outspoken. Whenever someone tried to put Charlotte at the center of attention, big or small, the girl was painfully uncomfortable. Anxious and frightened even. But to a fault she did her best to do what her mother wanted. Even if she spent nights crying over it, antagonizing over every little misstep that would be met with displeasure. As a soft spoken, kind but often introverted child Selene much preferred the company of nature or animals rather than people. She liked observing and taking note, but wasn’t fond of stating her opinions to people she didn’t fully know or trust. Growing up she was cosseted and sheltered in many ways, always carefully watched and protected as the youngest child of Edward Sloan and his third wife. Whenever she was with her siblings though, Charlotte was happy. Being around others in her family without her parents ever looming presence allowed her to be more carefree, joyous and playful. Traits in herself which she looks back on and wonders if she’ll be capable of reclaiming one day.
All her life Charlotte has done what she is told. With two domineering parents who in their own ways thought they knew exactly what was best for her, she found that both disappointing them or rebelling against them demanded getting into arguments and conflicts she’d rather just avoid all together. She isn’t fond of conflict in general and will rather back down and do what she’s told to do. Its been seared into Selene’s very core how her opinions or thoughts doesn’t really matter. When she was younger she did try to voice her thoughts or state her opinions, but she was always ignored or brushed off. The only ones who seemed to really listen to her were her japanese grandparents. She loved spending her summers with them in their family home on the island of Okinawa. Her mother let her go, despite not being fond of what she was sure her parents taught her daughter. Propriety, chastity, quiet manners and too much respect for elders. Though she might have been glad of that considering how void of rebellion her daughter showed in her teens. The only time she did rebel against her parents were briefly in high school, when she fell in with the wrong crowd. Charlotte was then considered a follower, someone who could be persuaded to come along despite knowing it was wrong. She wanted to be liked, to have friends that weren’t as proper or focused as her middle school ones. Her friends convinced her to join them in stealing from boutiques and stores, and for a while their after school curricular activities went by unnoticed. They stole more, drank and partied, broke curfew. But then they were caught stealing.
As a minor, Charlotte was lucky her father could buy her way out of any charges. Though the consequences were severe. She was sent to boarding school in Scotland to make her straighten out for the second half of her sophomore year and senior year of high school. The school itself located far out in the country side. Away from everyone and everything she loved back home. Her time away gave Charlotte the room to explore other sides of herself, such as her sexuality. Most of her teens she had found that boys didn’t really interest her like they seemed to do the other girls. During her small rebellious phase she experimented with a few boys, but that one hook up she did end up having left her feeling.. empty. Like nothing about it was right for her, and while the guy seemed to enjoy it, she didn’t. At her boarding school, Charlotte had her first girl crush, and she experimented with more than one girl, excited because being with them felt good, in all the ways she’d been told she was supposed to feel with a boy. Though she knew that admitting she was gay, only attracted to women, would only be possible with the closest of friends. Her parents would never approve and neither would her grandparents. In fact, her father had repeatedly vented, both to her and her mother, about his older rebellious son, doing the greatest sin of all. It was so painfully clear that he had cut Etienne off for being bisexual, and Charlotte was terrified of what might happen if he were to figure out that she wasn’t straight either. All her life her parents had been very clear about the path she should take, and that did not involve girlfriends, but boyfriends and straight marriage.
While at first she had loathed being at the school, it was caring for the animals there that got Charlotte trough. At first she was set to care for them as a punishment for skipping class. But after that first afternoon with the horses, pigs, cattle and goats, the big city girl was eager to return. The creatures needed her, and they had to be read and carefully treated for her to understand their needs and wants. It was like learning a new and exciting language, one that inspired her to start reading about animal behavior, biology and training. To Charlotte, this time in her life was pivotal, as it inspired her to put her dreams of becoming jewelry maker on the shelf, and decide to study to become a Veterinarian.
Luckily her parents didn’t disapprove, much. Her mother tried to persuade her to become a surgeon instead, vehement that it was a better profession for Charlotte. But for once, her daughter didn’t automatically break under a bit of pressure or comply without question. Instead the girl quietly argued why she was set on Veterinarian school, and continued focusing on her undergraduate degree after high school. She studied at The university of Edinburgh, though when her mother was diagnosed with cancer last year, Charlotte moved back to London adamant to continue her studies, but remain close to her parents. She thought being close would make her mom fight harder, would mean she might make it. But Christmas Eve came and her mother passed away. Beaten by the cancer that had infected her body. At first Charlotte was at a complete loss. All her life her mother had been her guiding force, the one to oversee and often make every little decision she faced. Now there was just her dad, and he had always been less insistent, more lenient, not the loud voice that her mother had been. Though when he suggested that Charlotte might benefit from studying abroad, she took his advice to heart. Much to his chagrin, she decided to come to Sunset Port to continue her studies at Veterinary School. He tried to talk his daughter out of it, though for the first time in a long time, Charlotte felt as if she could tell him no. As if she actually did have a choice.
Coming to the city, Charlotte is trying to allow herself to be excited to start a new life in a new place. After all she’s going to be close to her older brother and his soon to be wife and adorable twin girls. The two haven’t been all that close as adults but she does feel as if he’s not totally averse to having her around. They used to like each other as kids and while she feels like she has a lot to catch up on she does know that she loves him and is looking forward to living in the same place. Actually its a comfort to her that she’ll have family around to lean on. While she is still grieving the loss of her mother, Charlotte keeps finding out new things about herself, life and others as she is feeling oddly liberated. Before life was very set, her path narrow and lined with strict lines. Now the road is wide open, and she gets to decide what happens next. Its both thrilling and terrifying all at once.

AT THE PORSCHE DEALERSHIP
The sleek bodies in the showroom. The steering wheels knitted in fine leather. The air conditioning.
The Porsche dealership is on Route 1 here in Massachusetts, which I’ll tell you, Route 1 is one of those highway-ish stretches that has all sorts of big box businesses on it and, yeah, one of those zones that basically seems like hell on earth. (Let’s also not forget that people are trying to run you off the road the whole time because it’s Massachusetts... in the summer.) Once you get to the Porsche dealership, you’re surrounded by nothing but other Porsches. I won’t say it’s eerie, it’s more just like, wow, yeah, look at all these Porsches. Too sexy, too sexy. You walk in and it smells like the air-conditioned leather, verging on nothingness. I was there to get my car serviced, the annual, or yearly, appointment.
But first, you can stop being jealous because it’s not even really my car. I mean of course it isn’t. It’s really my mom’s car because it was my dad’s car, and it was his wish that I have it. It was his mid-life crisis purchase. So really it’s my mom’s car. Once it was relayed to me that my uncle’s girlfriend’s son asked in awe what I did to have a car like that and they must have been a little stumped what to tell him. Like, yeah, I dunno, I don’t really think he does anything. I mean it’s just fuckin really hard to even get semi-coherent responses. You guys know how it is, right? You must. It’s all very embarrassing and frustrating. My new Indian neighbor asked in a very inquisitive tone the other day, in his Indian accent, whose car it was. I had to sheepishly explain it to him, from between our yards. I mean I mostly drive my mother’s old Volvo station wagon, which pretty much epitomizes my life. Not that I’m not grateful.
The woman at the front desk, you could tell that she was over wearing the mask, but she had it on just enough. She seemed like one of those front desk ladies who says in perpetuity when you start to say something, “Just give me a fuckin second here,” while not looking at you. I mean I was wearing my dad’s old LL Bean hiking boots so maybe she thought I was a piece of shit, I dunno. Or maybe I’m just being insecure. But I got the nice t-shirt on, tucked in. I got the nice shorts with the nice, rustic belt. The Nike socks with the swooshes. That plain/classy, classy/plain look. (And just a lil sporty.) I had my nice little military watch on. Regardless, because it’s one of those high-end places they gotta start sucking your balls at some point. Like, they have to. It comes with the lemon water (pun intended). So sooner or later you’ll get your revenge. But then you see the repair bill and you realize what the whole setup is again. The prices make me want to faint. I mean I’m out here, can’t even make enough money to buy a candy bar. It’s tough. I sent all the info to my mom, or The Boss, as I sometimes refer to her, and she texted me, “It’s $800 to replace the horn?” With the blushing/eyes wide open emoji. Had to give her a call after that. It’s always just way easier calling.
Okay, even the guy who got the car for me... he was a younger salesman guy, dressed like a professional but without a tie. Bit of an open collar. Hair gel but not too much.
