I was trying to explain the "cuttlefish salute" to twitchchat and they weren't really getting it so I made diagrams
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So basically, a bunch of species of cuttlefish (generally the smaller ones, I've never succeeded with a pharaoh) will do this gesture if you imitate it to them. It's a way of saying "I mean you no harm, I am friendly", generally used by females and young males (with the context that the small males may be pretending to be females, to avoid seeming like competition/a threat to the larger and more dominant males).
Put your hands in front of your mouth and nose, with the fingers pointing down to mimic the cuttlefish's arms (cuttlefish have eight arms and two tentacles, the lil noodles on their face are the arms, the loooong ones are tentacles) and the thumbs tucked in out of sight. Make eye contact with your cuttlefish, and raise your two index fingers up over your nose, slightly bent. Most cuttlefish will do it back!
tadaaaa, cuttlefish salute.
