Finally done with book 10

Reading this particular book was a bizarre experience (I thought I was going to die reading this book fr and am honestly still a mess rn) but I’m so so glad that I sticked till the end. I have a shit ton of pent up emotions that I do not know how to express, but all I am going to say is that I loved everyone and I want all of them to be happy, because they 100% deserve it.

Thoughts On: The Case Files of Jeweler Richard

Let’s not speak of this again || Awful || Bad || Okay || Entertaining || Good || Better than Expected || Really Good || Amazeballs || What is this vision of glory I’ve witnessed?!

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard aired in the Winter 2020 season. I was watching it ongoing with a friend, but I had to stall it for a time when all the Covid stuff initially happened and we could no longer watch it together. Ultimately, I thought I’d be able to pick it back up with her pretty quickly, but it’s September and here we are.

Recently, however, I’ve been hearing different people discuss the series in a server I’m part of, so I decided to put it at the top of my continue list, and I’m glad that I did.

Jeweler Richard is not an anime that will appeal to everyone. If you’re not interested in slice-of-life anime that move rather slowly, then you’re probably best giving this one a pass. It’d be the same if you’re not much into mystery anime.

Ultimately, this series felt a lot like Hyouka or Beautiful Bones with both the timbre and pacing of the narrative as well as the solving of “real life” mysteries. I’d also say it shares some similarities with anime like My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU or Natsume’s Book of Friends where the focus really is the characters and the weight of living within a certain reality and what happens when those realities collide.

One of the things I really appreciate about Jeweler Richard, and it’s something I appreciate about a lot of slice-of-life anime, is how the relationships evolve in a slow burn. Whether you view it romantically or platonically aside, the love that develops between Seigi and Richard throughout the series is, ultimately, the core of the show.

Each jewel-related mystery they solve, each story they unravel together, is about human relationships at its root--about love.

While, again, this sort of thing won’t appeal to everyone, the deep look at interpersonal relationships and how they play out is fascinating and done really well in this series. The addition of the symbolic gemstones that guide each episode thematically just ties the narrative and characterization together in heartwarming, sometimes heart-wrenching, exquisite little bows.

I was certainly not disappointed in this show. I found there to be so many wholesome and genuine depictions of a variety of different kinds of relationships, and as I love good characterization, this series really did hit the mark for me. The relationship between Seigi and Richard as the nexus of all those looks into human relationships was honestly one of my favorites from a majority of anime I’ve consumed lately.

Like I said, this series really won’t appeal to everyone, but if you love characters and looks into the heart of what it means to be with someone else as family, friend, or lover as much as I do...please give The Case Files of Jeweler Richard a shot.

The twelfth episode of The Case Files of Jeweler Richard was a fascinating, unexpected reflection on our main character Seigi and what makes him tick.

Each of us have our pasts, individuals and actions we have to live with, for better or worse. When the individuals are acquaintances there’s a great opportunity for the problematic ones to fade with time, but when they’re family it’s much harder. For Seigi, this was his father, a man who apparently wants to mooch off his own child and those around him. It’s tough when it’s that close, more so when no one else seems capable to help. That said, Seigi isn’t a nobody, he has a whole set of friends and a step father willing to come to his rescue. To watch Seigi attempt to run, only to be thwarted by Richard, felt like such a just way to end the series. Our hero was himself saved by the one who warns him not to act callously.

A good way to end the series? Absolutely. It gave a rounding off to why Seigi acts the way he does, as well as force him to realize how much support he has.
