Rock Hard Excavating – The Best House Demolition Company
Tumblr media
Rock Hard Excavating is the most dependable and one of the best house demolition contractors in Arlington, McLean, and Fairfax, Northern Virginia
Demolition is the process of dismantling, tearing down or collapsing massive structures after they have served their purpose. With the aid of some tools or other techniques, and with the local authority’s approval, the demolition process is carried out. We are aware that every building is intended to last for a certain amount of time, often 100 years. To its tenants and the nearby structures, the structure’s continued existence after its useful life has passed, poses a serious threat. The goal of demolition is to protect nearby properties, workers, and the public from any inadvertent collapse of the building’s components.
A thorough building appraisal through surveys and proper assessments, including a building survey and a structure survey by the house demolition company in Arlington, Fairfax, Mclean, or any location, is necessary prior to the demolition of any building.

The Wheeling CVB Dives Deeper into Downtown Investments
Tumblr media
(Editor's Note: This blog was published this week by the Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau. The publishers with LEDE News wanted to re-publish the piece today because of the importance of the project on the corner of 10th and Main streets.) By: Jeremy Morris Earlier this year, the Wheeling CVB announced its purchase of the former Wheeling Inn property, a long-time hotel, and lounge adjacent to the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. The announcement marks another significant financial investment the CVB has made into Wheeling’s downtown. Considered by many an eyesore, the once brilliant example of mid-20th-century motel architecture has seen better days. And the CVB’s purchase is being championed as an excellent opportunity to reclaim part of Wheeling’s story. “Honestly, it is sacred ground,” says Wheeling Historian Margaret Brennan, “We know the earliest European settlers were buried in that area.” And before that time, we know that the Ohio River and Wheeling Creek confluence served many purposes for Native Peoples. The remains from the frontier anglo-cemetery were eventually moved south of Wheeling Creek to make way for the development of Wheeling as more than a frontier outpost. Strategic Economic Leadership Frank O’Brien Wheeling-Ohio County CVB Executive Director, acknowledges hospitality is a competitive industry, “But it is strong partnerships among the players that build better tourism products.” O’Brien and his staff have become astute at inserting themselves in the pole position of large partnerships that steer the community in new directions. In 2009, after a lengthy planning process, the Wheeling CVB stepped forward to purchase The Capitol Theatre and save the historical structure from vacancy and neglect. With millions now invested in the fabled entertainment venue, the city once again hosts touring Broadway, Wheeling Symphony, and national touring concerts. The theatre even transforms into a church every Sunday. Triangle of Hospitality and Entertainment The former Wheeling Inn property has been a hotspot for hospitality since the early days of Wheeling. Boarding houses and restaurants have always established themselves near the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, as it marked a noteworthy jumping-off point during our nation’s Westward Expansion. For much of the 20th Century, the intersection of 10th Street and Main was the pinnacle of entertainment in the city (and perhaps West Virginia). The Capitol Theatre, Bridge Tavern, and the Wheeling Inn property were a triangle of economic activity. Patrons visiting from around the world would eat, drink and revel at the restaurants before ducking into the theatre for a legendary Wheeling Jamboree show. Much of the after-performance revelry continued into the wee hours every weekend. A New Gateway for Downtown Plans for the site remain in the imagination and strategizing phase. However, demolition of the Inn will commence once other construction projects in that block of downtown are complete later this Spring. In recent years there has been considerable investment in the northern end of downtown. The Bridge Tavern has seen a rehabilitation that opened its upper floors for downtown living, while the Tavern has new ownership with a slightly different feel. Additionally, a 46-unit apartment building is under construction next door to the Tavern. And other properties in the vicinity are under rehabilitation or on the market for purchase. The redevelopment of the Inn property will provide a dramatic gateway into downtown with picturesque views of the National Historic Landmark, Wheeling Suspension Bridge, and Ohio River. The Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitors Bureau is a 501(C)6 non-profit organization entirely funded by the WV hotel occupancy tax and is an accredited member of the West Virginia Association of CVBs. The mission of the Wheeling-Ohio County CVB is “to enhance and develop tourism in Wheeling/Ohio County by marketing the area as a premier leisure and business travel destination, and to drive economic success and positively impact the quality of life in Wheeling/Ohio County.” Read the full article

Jaquelin Taylor Row
1108-1112 Capitol Street
Built, 1845
Demolished, 1938
Tumblr media
[HOR] — looking towards 1108-1112 Capitol Street — note Old City Hall at left
Fie upon the modern indelicacies of attending to business!
Tumblr media
[HOR] — detail of 1112 Capitol Street
This row of three houses was built in 1844-45 by Jaquelin P. Taylor on the site of the modest frame dwelling of Jacob Cohen. Mr. Taylor had come to Richmond as a young man from Orange County, and as a large importer of dry-goods he had built up a considerable fortune. In his obituary notice he is said to have been one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Richmond, whose name was synonymous with the word probity. Executor of William Barret, he was in process of winding up his friend’s affairs when he died suddenly in January, 1872, just after celebrating his seventy-fifth birthday.
Tumblr media
(VCU) — 1889 Baist Atlas Map of Richmond — Plate 5 — showing the occupation of Jacquelin Taylor Row by the T. R. Price Estate and the Richardsons
The two easternmost houses in the row remained the property of Mr. Taylor’s heirs as late as 1910. He left no children, but his wife’s family, the Richardsons, who during Mr. and Mrs. Taylor’s lifetime had occupied the middle house, later moved into the one at Twelfth and Capitol, which had been the Taylors’ own home. The Misses Jane and Harriet Richardson and their two brothers are remembered as "characters" by all those who knew them. One brother, who was very tall, was often seen in the Capitol Square, feeding the squirrels, with whom he was so gentle that they ate out of his hand without fear.
Tumblr media
(Find A Grave) — Judge Beverley Tucker Crump
The Misses Richardson were unadjusted to such modern indelicacies as ladies attending to business, so Judge Beverley Crump, who had charge of their affairs, had to bring them what money they needed in cash every month: going to a bank would have been quite out of the question for them. Mr. Jaquelin P. Taylor II, a great-nephew and namesake of the builder of these houses, recalls that when he came to Richmond as a youth he had to pay regular Sunday visits to the Richardsons and that he put up with the inevitable attendance at church for the sake of the excellent dinner that always followed.
Tumblr media
(Chronicling America) — advertisement, Richmond Times — Sunday, May 12, 1895
The westernmost house was sold in 1851 to Thomas R. Price, a leading citizen of his day. In 1833 he had founded the well known dry-goods store of Thos. R. Price and Company, of which he was head at the time of his death in 1868. Under various names, Fourqurean and Price, Fourqurean, Price and Temple, etc. this concern survived well into the twentieth century. Mr. Price’s son Edward is remembered by Mr. Munford (and by this writer) as an usher at St. Paul’s over a long period of years. "A man of patrician appearance and of courtly manner, Mr. Price gave distinction to the old Church he so faithfully attended and served."
Tumblr media
(Lee's Lieutenants, Army of Northern Virginia, Inc) — Johann August Henrich Heros von Borcke
Major von Borcke, the German officer on Jeb Stuart’s staff, tells in his memoirs of a visit to the Prices in this house in 1884. He had cared for Channing Price, when the latter was mortally wounded at his side, and ever since the Civil War the family had cherished von Borcke’s sword, which had barely escaped destruction when Mr. Price’s store was burned.
Tumblr media
(Fandom) — Ford's Hotel in the 19th century
The Price family owned No. 1108 up to 1903, when it was bought by Gilbert K. Pollack, a member of the City Council who built himself an office on Broad Street. In 1911 and 1912 all three houses were sold to the City. During the next twenty-five years a game of battledore and shuttlecock went on between City and State for possession of the site, known (from Ford’s Hotel which had stood to the west of the Taylor houses) as the Ford Lot.
Tumblr media
January 2020 — the former eastern extent of Capitol Street
Meanwhile the houses were occupied by various worthy organizations, notably by the Juvenile Court (which had its beginnings there), the Tuberculosis Association, and the Academy of Arts, the last two organizations remaining, respectively, in 1112 and 1108-10 until the buildings were about to be demolished over their heads. It was finally decided that the projected State Library was to occupy the site, and in 1938 they were pulled down.
Tumblr media
January 2020 — former Leigh Street Baptist Church
Together with Linden Row, the Jaquelin Taylor houses were the finest example of the rows of houses built during the ’forties and ’fifties. In some respects these were superior to Linden Row. The porches, with their delicate Corinthian columns, and the fences with pineapple posts like those of the contemporary Norman Stewart and Barret houses were particularly beautiful. Mr. Taylor’s own home, 1112 Capitol, was further adorned with an exquisite iron balcony on the Capitol Street side.
Tumblr media
[HOR] | January 2020 — comparison of the fencing at Jaquelin Taylor Row and the former Leigh Street Baptist Church
During the demolition, the corner house was found to have a curious and interesting dome above the well of the stair, which was a continuous spiral from the bottom to the top of the house. When the houses were demolished the fence was given to Leigh Street Baptist Church, where it is now installed, and the balcony and front entrances to the Valentine Museum. The balcony is now in the garden of the Museum. [HOR]
Tumblr media
January 2020 — looking towards 1108-1112 Capitol Street
As Ms. Scott relates, this block of Capitol Street would change radically in the wake of the new State Library that replaced both Ford’s Hotel and the Jacquelin Taylor Row in 1938. That it is a handsome art deco building in its own right compensates somewhat for the loss of the older houses. Auld lang syne.
Things were changed again in 1997 when the library relocated to its third location at 800 East Broad Street. The old location transformed into the Patrick Henry Executive Office Building, and this end of Capitol Street was filled in to make a driveway for the Commonwealth’s fleet of gubernatorial SUVs.

Kelso House Museum
Brimfield Historical Society
4158 OH-43
Kent, OH 44240
The Brimfield Historical Society and Kelso House Museum of Brimfield Ohio, aims to inspire the community by collecting, preserving and exhibiting artifacts from the township’s past and fostering connections to people and ideas. The Brimfield Historical Society organization was originally founded as the Brimfield Memorial House Association, in 1963, as an effort to save the Kelso House, which was slated for demolition. Over the past fifty plus years the membership has grown, as well as its archive and collection. The Museum grounds now include several outbuildings, the Kelso House itself, and the burgundy colored Saxe House, which serves as the Historical Society and Museum Office
In 1816, when the actual settlement of Town 2, Range 9, began in the Western Reserve, the township’s proprietors were Massachusetts, residents, Israel Thorndike of Beverly and John Wyles, Jr. of Brimfield. Thorndike, a well-to-do Federalist, sent his nephew, Henry, of Jaffrey, New Hampshire, a Dartmouth man and a lawyer, here in the fall of 1816 to settle and to sell the northern half of the 25 square mile township. With Henry came his brother, Israel, a master mariner. The brothers found John Boosinger, a native of Eastern Virginia, already clearing a 200-acre farm when they arrived. By late 1820, their sister, Mary Thorndike Lincoln and her husband Luke, the town’s first physician, and their cousin, Edward, had also settled near Plum Creek. Sawyers, Twitchells, and Lanphares were among the New Hamphshiremen and Vermonters encouraged to come here by the Thorndikes. They organized the township and gave it their name in 1817. In 1830 the several hundred residents petitioned that the town be renamed in honor of John Wyles, Jr. of Brimfield, Massachusetts, whose agent, Abel Burt, had charge of land sales in the southern half of the township.
William R. Kelso opened his stage tavern in 1837. That business also served many years as the town’s post office. Formerly the Union House or Old Hotel, the Kelso House Museum is a vision in nineteenth century small town living. Outbuildings include the 1845 New England style Michael-Cable Barn; the1879 Boosinger-Cannon Farm Granary; the 1860’s Boosinger-Cannon Farm Corn Crib; the Original 3-bay Outhouse used at the Brimfield Town Hall; the reconstructed Entrance Archway from the 1921 Brimfield School (moved after demolition in 2008); and the 1871 Town Hall bell (now relocated to behind the Outhouse)
The herb garden (also known as the kitchen garden) can be found directly behind the Kelso House. The garden was started in the 1960’s by a few dedicated women. Today, the garden is maintained by the Portage County Master Gardeners, which is a program part of the Ohio University Extension. This program requires rigorous training for a year, and also requires a lot of dedication. The Master Gardeners give details about the plants that are planted in the garden, while also running educational programs for the schools in the area.

Midterm Campaigns in Wheeling Area Soon to Hit the Trail
Tumblr media
The all-time most popular campaign promise in the Upper Valley for decades has been the addition of new jobs. J-O-B-S, and nothing else except for adding or improving what attracts new employers to the Northern Panhandle and/or East Ohio. Many local residents are old enough to recall a time when employment was not an issue in the area because industry. There was steel, of course, bit also aluminum, glass, toys, automobile parts, and bituminous coal, to name a few of the products once stamped, “MADE IN WHEELING.”  “There was money to be made,” recalled Jack Cera, a retired Ohio lawmaker who served the state House for terms between the late 1980s through the early 2000s. “You didn’t need to go to college to make a good living for a long time around here. Those kinds of jobs were readily available.” That, however, is no longer the case and hasn’t been for a few decades and that is why every community within the Upper Ohio Valley has experience population decline. “It was gradual at first, but then leaving here became something our young people started talking about in high school,” Cera said. “A lot of people have tried to reverse the population loss, but I don’t see it as possible until the jobs are here again. That’s why so many people in Belmont County hope to see PTT (Global) build the (petrochemical) cracker plant because of the jobs and the industry that’s supposed to follow. “But these days we see more demolitions than we see new construction,” he said. “The only thing that changes that is more jobs and that’s why we hear about it every couple of years.” W.Va. Del. Erikka Storch (R-3) was initially elected in 2010 and has served ever since. Knock Knock Knock  One practice during local campaign seasons throughout the valley has been walking door-to-door to reach voters in particular cities, towns, and districts. During the coronavirus pandemic, however, many candidates and incumbents created new methods for candidate-to-constituent communication.  The most popular way was utilizing the internet for virtual connections and Cera expects the same before early voting begins in late October. “The internet and the technology we have now has really helped the people running for office because now it’s easier to reach people. With social media, you can reach far more people than going door-to-door,” Cera said. “But when I first got involved in the 1980s, knocking on doors and going to as many functions as possible were the best ways to campaign. “Because it’s a midterm (election) year, the actual campaigning won’t take place until October. That’s when most of the yard signs will go up and all the dinners and the town halls will be held,” the former state lawmaker said. “In Belmont County, we have the governor’s race and the Commission race, and I know in West Virginia it’s a big year for state elections.” But when will the signs grow in yards and along side interstate access ramps? When should we expect TV and online ads to appear? And how about those unexpected knocks at the front door? Greg Thomas works as a Republican operative out of Charleston, W.Va, and he also is the owner and president of Targeted Communication Strategies. “I think a lot of Republicans will wait for October to really start reaching out to the voters,” Thomas predicted. “In the races in the Northern Panhandle, I think the Republicans have done a nice job letting the voters know what they stand for and what they would do if elected or re-elected. The party’s goals in West Virginia are really simple because Republicans have been working on the budget and on initiatives that will make the state more attractive to out-of-state investors. “There’s a lot of work left to do, too, and I believe the voters want the party to address tax reform next,” he said. “I know the leadership in Charleston is studying our tax system and that they believe they have found ways to reduce the burden on the taxpayers. Who doesn’t want to give the government less of their money? When it comes to taxes, I’m not sure parties matter because everyone I know, Republican or Democrat, wants to play less taxes.” Del. Fluharty became a member of House of Delegates in 2015, and has been re-elected for a fourth time on Nov. 3. Roll Red Roll? Following Election Day 2020, the Republicans had a 64-36 supermajority in the Ohio House, and a 25-8 advantage in the state Senate with 17 seats up for grabs in November. In West Virginia, there are 34 seats in the Senate and currently 23 of them are filled by members of the GOP, and the party presently possesses 78 or 100 seats in the state House. Thomas looks for both of those numbers to grow in each chamber come November 8.  “I think in West Virginia the Republican margins grow larger in the House and in the Senate, and I see the agenda moving forward to attract more manufacturing back to West Virginia,” the GOP operative predicted. “The Republican leadership in West Virginia has made a lot of changes that have been very positive, and those changes have reversed a lot of Democrats put into place during their 84 years of leadership. “We’ve been hearing about a ‘red wave’ taking place in West Virginia and in Ohio, and I believe we’ll see a good bit of that take place in November,” he said. “I’m sure some Democrats who are favorites in their communities will win, but I can see a lot of incumbents losing their seats, too, because there’s a Republican ready to represent a different way.” Cera expects much of the same “In this area, I expect a lot of Republicans to win because that’s where we are right now. I can remember when it was the exact opposite 25 years ago,” he explained. “Democrats were in control in this valley for a lot of years, but as we’ve lost population because of the loss of manufacturing jobs, that’s changed how people vote and what they vote for. “The voters used to be more concerned with what is taking place locally, but I think now that they have the 24/7 news cycle they care more about the federal level these days,” Cera added. “This November, though, is much more about local and state government so the (voter) turnout will be smaller than it will be in 2024.” Read the full article

Oliver Chilled Plow Works Branch House
908 Oliver Hill Way Built, 1886, 1913 & 1916 VDHR 127-6914
Tumblr media
September 2018
A chilled what?
The Circuit Superior Court of Richmond divided the real estate of Charles Ellis, recently deceased, among his heirs in 1842. His daughter Jane Ellis received a lot on the western side of North 17th Street. The southern boundary line of the lot ran along the future site of the northern wall of the 1885 packing house.
Tumblr media
(Find A Grave) — Junius Albert Morris
Years later, after Jane Ellis had married N. Beverly Tucker, she and her husband sold the lot to William Isaac Johnson on June 26, 1883. Johnson, in turn, sold the lot on February 1, 1884, to Isaac Davenport Jr., Griffin B. Davenport, and Junius A. Morris, principals in the firm of Davenport and Morris. The men were involved in several enterprises, with a grocery business located at 120–124 S. 17th St. They were also stock brokers (Davenport & Co.) with offices at 1115 E. Main St., and Isaac Davenport Jr. was president of First National Bank and Union Bank.
Tumblr media
(Find A Grave) — Isaac Davenport Jr.
In 1886, Davenport and Morris constructed a brick and stone tobacco warehouse that adjoined the 1885 warehouse along its northern wall. Bernard J. Black was the architect. The one-story warehouse had a “tin and glass roof,” cost $25,000, and filled the lot. By July 1886, the work was reported “under way.”
Tumblr media
(VCU) — 1889 Baist Atlas Map of Richmond — Plate 15
In 1889, Davenport’s 1886 warehouse appeared in G. William Baist’s Atlas of the City of Richmond. Similar in appearance to the 1877 Beers Atlas, Baist’s work is more schematic and less detailed than the Sanborn Insurance Company maps. It does, however, show Davenport’s new brick “Tobacco Ware Ho[use]” just north of and abutting the “Packing Ho[use]” that appeared by itself on the 1885 Sanborn map.
Tumblr media
September 2018 — earliest section of the Branch House complex
After the demolition of the meat-packing house between 1959 and 1964, Davenport’s warehouse constituted the southern end of the present-day Oliver Chilled Plow Works Branch House.
The demolition perhaps caused a need for the southern wall of the 1886 building to be partially rebuilt, which may account for the lack of a tie-in to the remainder of the front wall, as well as the parging and pilasters on the southern elevation.
Tumblr media
(Rocket Werks RVA Postcards) — James Oliver
On March 18, 1892, the Davenport and Morris partners sold their “warehouse and other improvements” to the South Bend Iron Works Company.
James Oliver had founded the company in 1853. Obsessed with inventing a stronger, more-efficient plow, he experimented until he achieved success with a process that involved sand-casting and rapid cooling (“chilling”) of the metal.
Tumblr media
(R. M. Wade & Co.) — Oliver's No. 10-V Full Chilled Plow from 1917 R.M. Wade Catalog
He first sold his new plows, fifty in all, in 1857. By the early 1870s, after years of further experimentation and enlarging the foundry, his company was selling 300,000 plows a year and had expanded into the international market. He also established what he called “branch houses” in other states and cities, including Richmond, to sell and deliver plows to retailers.
Tumblr media
(iCollector) — Oliver Chilled Plow Pamphlet for the Oliver Chill Plow Works
Oliver’s plows were famous for their strength and efficiency. In 1911, Oliver and the M. Rumely Company staged a plowing event near South Bend under the auspices of Purdue University. Fifty Oliver plows were attached to three Rumely Oil-Pull tractors to plow a twenty-acre field with stubble. After the event concluded, the Purdue scientists calculated that one acre had been plowed every four minutes and fifteen seconds. Farmers who witnessed the event recalled that fifty years earlier it had taken two men, an ox, and a single walking plow ten hours to turn one acre, and the farmer had to walk ten miles to do it. The savings in energy and time were obvious, and the demand for Oliver plows was high as a result.
Tumblr media
(iCollector) — Oliver Chilled Plow Pamphlet for the Oliver Chill Plow Works
The company’s purchase of the Davenport warehouse in Richmond in 1892 suggested that the demand for its plows was strong in Virginia and the nearby states that were connected to the new Oliver branch house by the rail line and spur adjoining it. In May 1913, South Bend Iron Works sold the lot and branch house to its successor company, the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, which had been created in 1901.
Tumblr media
September 2018 — middle section of the Branch House complex
The two adjoining buildings—the meat-packing house and the plow company branch house— appeared on the 1895 Sanborn map. The 1885 “packing house,” which had a basement and a “gas eng[ine],” was labeled “National Linseed Oil Co. Ware Ho[use]” in 1895. The 1886 building was labeled “Plow Ware Ho[use],” for the South Bend Iron Works. The northernmost lot on Washington Street, which was vacant on Baist’s map, was shown as a single lot with a rail spur penetrating its center from the north.
Tumblr media
(LOC) — Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Richmond (1905) — Plate 24
The 1905 Sanborn map showed few changes from 1895. The American Linseed Oil Company occupied the 1885 warehouse as a “tank station,” while the Oliver Chilled Plow Works used the 1886 building as a branch house. Both still were of one story and the 1885 building still had a basement. The former Hagan and Hunt lots just north of the Oliver branch house were vacant. The northern lot, which had no name attached to it, contained a large woodshed.

(ProQuest® Sanborn Maps Geo Edition™) — Sanborn Insurance Maps of Richmond (1925) — Plate 221 — showing completed complex
By 1919, construction of the large three-story, reinforced concrete addition with brick curtain walls had begun. During the decades following the completion of the building by 1923, Oliver Chilled Plow Works underwent mergers and changes in ownership. In 1929, it merged with the Hart-Parr Tractor Company, the American Seeding Machine Company, and the Nichols and Shepard Company, to form the Oliver Farm Equipment Company. The new company acquired all of the lots and buildings on North 17th Street from Oliver Chilled Plow Works. (VDHR)

From here the property got batted around like a shuttlecock.
White Motor Company acquired Oliver Farm Equipment Company in 1960, and changed its name to Oliver Corporation.
Oliver Corporation sold the property to Saunders Oil Company in 1969, and then sold it to Philip Morris in 1970.
Philip Morris transferred the parcel and buildings to Frank B. Daniels, Jr. that same year, who then sold the parcel and buildings to William M. Walker in 1979.
Walker, in turn, sold it to Norman E. Herod, of Herod Seeds Inc. in 1979.
Today, the 1919 portion of the Branch House still bears the Herod Seeds name, but the business moved to Manchester, and has since gone the way of the dodo. (VDHR) Norman Herod still owns the property, and as recently as November 2017, the Richmond Planning Commission was considering his rezoning request, so that it can be developed into residential units. Today, however, it remains mostly dormant.
