Lucy the Stockholder
S3;E25~ March 29, 1965
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
When Lucy gets a small refund on her taxes, she intends to become a stockholder in Mr. Mooney's bank. As a new 'owner' she helps to get the account of a wealthy eccentric doctor but mistakenly becomes involved in one of his hypnotic regression experiments.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Harvey Korman (Mr. Phillips, Stockbroker) previously played Mr. Slater, the Camp Director in “Lucy, the Camp Cook” (S3;E6). Korman is best known as a cast member of “The Carol Burnett Show” (1967-77), four episodes of which featured Lucille Ball. He will make two more appearances on “The Lucy Show.” In 1977 he had his own show on ABC which lasted just one season. At the time of this episode he was a regular on “The Danny Kaye Show” (1963-67) which aired Friday nights on CBS. Lucille Ball guest starred on the episode aired on Saturday, October 24, 1964, the night before her show, which generally aired on Mondays.
Tumblr media
Joseph Mell (George, Bank Guard) previously played Bailiffs in “Lucy the Meter Maid” (S3;E7) and “Lucy is Her Own Lawyer” (S2;E23). His first role on the series was as a Butcher in “Together for Christmas” (S1;E13). Mell also appeared in a 1969 episode of “Here’s Lucy.” In 1964 he appeared in the TV special “Mr. and Mrs.” (aka “The Lucille Ball Comedy Hour”), which featured many of the Desilu regulars and was directed by Jack Donohue, who also directed this episode. In 1971, he was a Taxi Driver on “Lucy and the Lecher,” a cross-over episode of Danny Thomas’s “Make Room for Granddaddy” in which Lucille Ball played Lucy Carter, her character from “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Elliott Reid (Dr. Oscar Kurtzman) had previously appeared on the series in “Lucy Visits the White House” (S1;E25) and had played Edward Warren, a parody of Edward R. Murrow, in “The Ricardos Are Interviewed” (ILL S5;E7). He also made two appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”
Dr. Kurtzman represents a million dollar research foundation.
Tumblr media
Lynne Allen (Miss Thompson, Dr. Kurtzman's Assistant) had only seven screen credits to her name, this being her last.
Tumblr media
James Gonzales (Bank Teller) was a popular Hollywood extra who first acted with Lucille Ball in the 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer. He was previously seen on the series as Stan Williams in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (S1;E2). He was seen in more than 20 episodes of “The Lucy Show” and 3 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Betty Lou Barto (Bank Teller) makes her one and only appearance on screen, according to IMDB.
Tumblr media
Sid Gould (Mr. Sommers, Bank Customer) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton. Gould was married to Vanda Barra, who also appeared on “The Lucy Show” starting in 1967, as well as on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Carole Cook (Mrs. Valance, Bank Customer) makes her third appearance as Mrs. Valance. She was also seen as Lucy’s neighbor Thelma Green in four episodes. She was a protege of Lucille Ball’s during the Desilu Playhouse years. Although born as Mildred Cook, Ball suggested she take the name Carole, in honor of Lucy’s great friend, Carole Lombard. Cook also went on to appear in five episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Hal Taggart (Mr. Williams, Bank Customer, uncredited) makes his fifth and final appearance on “The Lucy Show” after having been seen in the Lucille Ball film The Facts of Life (1960).
George DeNormand (Bank Customer, uncredited) had appeared in three films with Lucille Ball from 1937 to 1963. This is the just one of his many appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”
Hazel Pierce (Bank Customer, uncredited) was Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in throughout “I Love Lucy.” She also made frequent appearances on the show. Of her many on-camera appearances on “The Lucy Show” only once was she given a character name and credited, in “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (S1;E1). She was also an uncredited extra in the film Forever Darling (1956).
Georgia Holt (Bank Customer, uncredited) was the mother of superstar Cher. She appeared as a fashion model in “Lucy Gets a Paris Gown” (ILL S5;E20). A frequent background player on “The Lucy Show,” she will also be seen as a fur model in “Lucy and Pat Collins” (S5;E11).
Alberto Morin (Bank Customer, uncredited) was born in Puerto Rico, and appeared in some of Hollywood’s most cherished films: Gone with the Wind (1939), Casablanca (1943), and Key Largo (1948). He was Carlos, one of Ricky’s “Cuban Pals” (ILL S1;E28) and the Robert DuBois in “The French Revue” (ILL S3;E7). His many background appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy” were all uncredited.
Douglas Deane (Radio Announcer, voice over) was previously glimpsed as a hotel guest in “Lucy Goes to Vegas” (S3;E17). Between 1945 and 1955 he starred in four Broadway musicals, including the original cast of Guys and Dolls.
An uncredited voice plays Mr. Phillips' secretary Miss Rose. Other background actors play additional customers and clerks at the bank.
Tumblr media
This episode was intended to be the season 3 finale, but due to constant pre-emptions by the network, it turned out to be the second to last instead. It was filmed in color, but originally aired by CBS in black and white.
Tumblr media
The episode opens with Lucy listening to an exercise program on her trusty transistor radio. The prop turns up on many other episodes and even makes the trip to California with Lucy!
Tumblr media
Trying to do exercises while making breakfast, Lucy breaks a few eggs. Raw eggs were responsible for the longest laugh on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Does the Tango” (ILL S6;E20) as well as for comic effect in “Men Are Messy” (ILL S1;E8), “Ricky Thinks He’s Going Bald” (ILL S1;E34), “Ricky’s Hawaiian Vacation” (ILL S3;E22), “Lucy, the Camp Cook” (S3;E6), and “Lucy The Robot” (S4;E23).
Tumblr media
Lucy gets a letter from the Internal Revenue which turns out to be an income tax refund of $38.23. That would be the equivalent (adjusting for inflation) of more than $300 today. Lucy decides to invest it all in the stock market and pays a visit to a nervous broker (Harvey Korman). When he finally hears that she has just $38.23 he nearly has a nervous breakdown.
LUCY: “Are you sure you feel alright, Mr. Philips?” PHILLIPS: “Oh, fine. I haven’t felt this way since 1929.”
Mr. Phillips is referring to the stock market crash of October 1929 that plunged the United States into the Great Depression.
Tumblr media
After buying a single share of the Danfield Bank for $32, Lucy the stockholder pays the bank a visit. She warns the lackadaisical guard (Joe Mell) that she has a nine year-old nephew who is quicker on the draw than him. Lucy Carmichael only ever mentioned one sibling, Marge, who was seen in “Lucy's Sister Pays a Visit” (S1;E15) in 1963. In that episode she eloped, and no child was ever mentioned – certainly none that could be 8 years old in 1965. Of course, power hungry Lucy may be fibbing to the Guard to scare him into keeping his job!
Tumblr media
Lucy is so grateful for her refund that she wants to send “Lyndon” a thank you note. To further extend the joke, there is a large framed portrait of President Johnson over Mr. Mooney's desk. Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36th President of the United States, assuming office from the Vice Presidency after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He was re-elected in November 1964 by an overwhelming majority. Two weeks earlier, “The Lucy Show” was pre-empted for his televised address to Congress.
We learn that Mr. Bainbridge is Chairman of the Board of the Danfield Bank.
Viv unfavorably compares Mr. Mooney to her ex-husband (Ralph), although she does not use his name.
Tumblr media
In return, Mr. Mooney calls Lucy “The Lady Wolf of Wall Street” and Viv “Typhoid Mary.” Real-life financier Bernard Baruch (1870-1965) was known as “The Lone Wolf of Wall Street.” Mary Mallon (1869-1938) was a cook known as “Typhoid Mary” because she was an asymptomatic carrier of the typhoid virus. She is said to have infected 22 people, three of whom died. Mr. Mooney's analogy of Lucy with Baruch is obvious given her new-found ownership in the bank, but equating Viv with Mallon seems to indicate that she is not a welcome person to have around.
To land the account of a wealthy but eccentric doctor (Elliott Reid), Lucy and Viv pay him a visit - only to be mistaken for volunteers for his experiment. Lucy and Viv play along to get the account.
Tumblr media
This is not Lucy's first brush with hypnosis. In “Lucy Conducts the Symphony” (S2;E13) she remembers that Harvey Simmons hypnotized a man during a party so she then does the same thing to hypnotize Wally Cox. In season five, Lucy will have an encounter with Pat Collins “the hip hypnotist,” a real-life nightclub performer.
Tumblr media
A publicity image of Lucy and Viv riding the large hobby horse during the age regression experiment was used on the Season 3 DVD cover.
Tumblr media
VIV (child-like): “My name’s Vivian. I take dancing lessons. I can kick over my head.” LUCY (child-like): “Okay. Kick it over here and I’ll kick it back.”
When pretending to be hypnotized, Lucy walks on stilts, something she previously did in “Lucy's and her Electric Mattress” (S1;E12) and will do again in “Lucy Bags a Bargain” (S4;E17). Naturally, the studio audience rewards her skills with applause.
Tumblr media
Discovering that Mr. Mooney is really hypnotized, not faking, Viv says “He's stiffer than Dean Martin.” Dean Martin was a well-known singer and actor who had a reputation for drinking (getting ‘stiff’). He will play himself on an episode of “The Lucy Show” in season four. In 1975 he appeared with Lucille Ball in a TV movie titled “Lucy Gets Lucky.”
Tumblr media
Lucy calls Mr. Mooney out for being dressed like Little Lord Fauntleroy. This is the name of a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett (The Secret Garden). The Fauntleroy suit (also known as the Buster Brown suit), created a fad for formal dress for American middle-class children. This look was widely parodied in both film and television. The book was filmed in 1936 (above).
Callback!
Tumblr media
Fred Mertz dressed like Little Lord Fauntleroy in “Lucy Hires an English Tutor” (ILL S2;E13). In “Changing the Boys' Wardrobe” (ILL S3;E10) Fred calls Ricky Little Lord Fauntleroy.  Ricky responds saying,
RICKY: “Nobody's gonna call me little Fontle-roo-ey"!”
Tumblr media
In “The Kleptomaniac” (ILL S1;E27) Lucy Ricardo is hypnotized by a psychiatrist (Joseph Kerns) and regresses back to her childhood.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo acts childish by filling the apartment with kids toys in “The Ricardos Change Apartments” (ILL S2;E26).
Tumblr media
In “The Business Manager” (ILL S4;E1) Ricky thought Lucy was playing the stock market, but she was actually just buying groceries from the corner market! He confuses Lucy’s purchase of a can of All Pet for Mrs. Trumbull’s cat with a listed stock!
Tumblr media
Desilu was a publicly traded company and as such sold stock. Above is a sample stock certificate for 100 shares of Desilu signed by Lucille Ball and Edwin Holly.
Blooper Alert!
Giggle! When the Doctor is undoing the hypnotic spell, one single studio audience member loudly chuckles, despite the fact that it is not a funny line.

“Leonard Parkes Is Acquitted of Theft,” Ottawa Citizen. January 6, 1939. Page 01. ---- Conflicting evidence resulted in the dismissal by Magistrate Strike of the charge against Leonard Parkes, 26 years, now of no fixed abode, who was arrested in Montreal and brought back to Ottawa on the charge of stealing a bag with a payroll amounting to $212.69, belonging to Taggart Service Limited.
Parkes formerly was employed as driver by Taggart Service Limited. On November 6th, 1937, the bag was taken from the firm’s truck which was in charge of Stewart Hatherington, 70 Bell street, who left the truck to go into a store on Rideau street, near King Edward avenue. Subsequently the bag, slit open, was found in the canal.
Gregory Bougeou, 66 Normand street, a brother-in-law gave the main evidence against Parkes. He said on the night of Nov. 6th, he and Parkes went in an automobile and near the corner of Rideau and King the automobile was stopped. Parkes got out and in a few minutes returned with the bag, placing it on the scat between them. The bag was cut open and thrown away while the money was taken to Bougeou’s home and was hidden in the back yard for a time. He admitted unfriendly relations between Mr. and Mrs. Parkes and between Parkes and him.
In his defence Parkes made a flat denial of the evidence given by his brother-in-law. Raoul Mercier, K.C., crown attorney, conducted the prosecution while Hal J. Burns was counsel for Parkes.

Lucy Meets Danny Kaye
S3;E15~ December 28, 1964
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
When Lucy writes away for tickets to “The Danny Kaye Show” but is turned down, she wangles her way in to see Kaye, first at a fancy Manhattan eatery then at his ritzy hotel suite. In order to get her into the show, Kaye offers to give her a walk-on role in the telecast – but Lucy manages to hog the spotlight anyway.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney)
Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley), Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael), Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley) and Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael) do not appear in this episode. Chris and Jerry, however, are mentioned.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Danny Kaye (Himself) was born David Kaminsky in 1911 and left school at the age of 13 to work in the Borscht Belt of Jewish resorts in the Catskill Mountains. It was there he learned the basics of show biz. In 1939, he made his Broadway debut in Straw Hat Revue, but it was the stage production of the musical Lady in the Dark in 1940 that brought him acclaim and notice from agents. Also in 1940, he married Sylvia Fine, who went on to manage his career. She helped create the routines and gags, and wrote most of the songs that he performed. Danny could sing and dance like many others, but his specialty was reciting tongue-twisting songs and monologues.
Tumblr media
In 1962 Lucille Ball guest-starred on his CBS TV program “The Danny Kaye Show.”
Tumblr media
A month before this episode of “The Lucy Show” Ball made a second appearance on the program. The two appeared together on variety and tribute shows from 1965 to 1986, a year before his death from heart failure.
Leon Belasco (Bruno, the Maitre d') was born in Russia in 1902. He was in three films with Lucille Ball before playing the art store clerk in “Lucy Becomes a Sculptress” (ILL S2;E15). He previously played the violin in “No More Double Dates” (S2;E21) and “Lucy Conducts the Symphony” (S2;E13). This is his final appearance on the series.
Tumblr media
Stanley Farrar (Man with Danny) was seen on “I Love Lucy” in “Home Movies” (ILL S3;E20) and “Staten Island Ferry” (ILL S5;E12).  He will make one more appearance on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (S3;E23).   Hal Taggart (Man with Danny) makes the fourth of five appearances on “The Lucy Show” after having been seen in the Lucille Ball film The Facts of Life (1960).
Tumblr media
Ray Kellogg (Henderson, the Doorman) played the loud, barking Assistant Director (“Roll ‘em!”) in “Ricky’s Screen Test” (ILL S4;E6) and later appeared in “Bullfight Dance” (ILL S4;E22). This is the second of his seven episodes of “The Lucy Show.” He also did two episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Just as in his other screen credits, most most times he played policemen.
Tumblr media
Sue Casey (Miss Holloway) was a fashion model and actress who appeared in countless films. She appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners which were released 48 years apart: An American in Paris (1951) and American Beauty (1999). Casey was credited as ‘Miss Leg Girl’ on “Lucy Wants a Career,” a 1959 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”  This is her final appearance with Lucille Ball.
Monty O'Grady (Mr. Martin) was first seen with Lucille Ball in The Long, Long Trailer (1953), and played a passenger on the S.S. Constitution in “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14). He was at the airport when “The Ricardos Go to Japan” (1959). He made a dozen appearances on the series and a half dozen more on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Estelle Etterre (Grand Plaza Hotel Guest) makes her penultimate screen appearance in this episode, her only time sharing the screen with Lucille Ball in her 35 year career. She retired in 1966 and died at the age of 96.
Tumblr media
Paul Bradley (Grand Plaza Hotel Guest) makes the third of his six appearances on “The Lucy Show” in various roles. He will also be seen in two episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Patrons at the Park Royal Restaurant:
Hazel Pierce was Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in throughout “I Love Lucy.” She also made frequent appearances on the show. Of her many on-camera appearances on “The Lucy Show” only once was she given a character name and credited, in “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (S1;E1). She was also an uncredited extra in the film Forever Darling (1956).
Caryl Lincoln & Bert Stevens were a real-life husband and wife who made many appearances as background players on the series. Lincoln was one of Lucy’s friends from her Goldwyn Girl days. Stevens was the brother of actress Barbara Stanwyck, whose given name was Ruby Stevens. He was seen in the Tropicana audience for the Flapper Follies when “Ricky Loses His Voice” (ILL S2;E9) but along with Lincoln, probably appeared on other episodes as well.
Jerry Rush makes the first of his nine (mostly uncredited) appearances on the series. He also did two episodes of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Other uncredited background performers play the other diners at the restaurant, Danny Kaye's female fans, and the extras in the airport sequence of Kaye's TV show.
Tumblr media
This episode was filmed on June 11, 1964.
Tumblr media
This is the final episode aired in 1964. In many markets it aired an hour earlier than usual to allow for a CBS News program looking back at 1964.
Tumblr media
At the start of the episode, Mr. Mooney is in his scout master khakis with short pants. He is taking his son along with Jerry and some other boys, on a camping trip. He did this twice previously in “Lucy and the Scout Trip” (S3;E26) and “Lucy Becomes a Father” (S3;E9). Neither of the boys appears in this episode, however.
Mr. Mooney's friend, Mr. Crawford, is a network executive. Mr. Mooney also mentions his (never seen) wife Irma and her bridge club.
Tumblr media
When Lucy asks Mr. Mooney to put her in touch with Mr. Crawford (to get tickets for Kaye's show), he replies that he would be reluctant to put her in touch with Mr. Ed!  This is a reference to the TV series about a talking horse, “Mr. Ed” (1958-66), also seen on CBS.
Tumblr media
The Park Royal is a fictional Manhattan restaurant. Its name implies it may be located on or near Central Park or Park Avenue.
Tumblr media
The Grand Plaza Hotel is also a fictional New York City establishment. The name is meant to evoke the famous Plaza Hotel, which sits on the west side of Grand Army Plaza.
Tumblr media
When Danny Kaye joins Lucy in the doorman's coat he makes a joke that he's just been to Yankee Stadium for a 'double-header'!  “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1) had scenes taking place at the legendary ballpark. Hope and Kaye appeared together in the 1959 film The Five Pennies, as well as honoring Lucille Ball on a 1976 CBS Tribute show.
Tumblr media
Danny Kaye telephones Bill Paley to see if he has any spare tickets to give Lucy. William S. Paley (1901-90), was the chief executive who built the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) from a small radio network into one of the foremost radio and television network operations in the United States. In “Lucy's Barbershop Quartet” (S1;E19) Viv mentions Barbara Cushing, who is a soloist in her church choir. In real life, Barbara Cushing was better known as Babe Paley, wife of William S. Paley.
Tumblr media
The opening of “The Danny Kaye Show” is here underscored with the music to “Hey, Look Me Over,” a Cy Coleman song from the Broadway musical Wildcat introduced by Lucille Ball in 1960.
Tumblr media
On the phone, Paley mistakes Danny Kaye for Danny Thomas. Lucy had appeared with Thomas on “Lucy Makes Room for Danny,” a 1958 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” “The Danny Thomas Show” (aka “Make Room for Daddy”) was filmed on the Desilu lot. He also guest-starred on “Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (S4;E7), above, and a 1968 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
The best Paley can do is two tickets for “The Jackie Gleason Show” next April.  At the time this episode was filmed, Jackie Gleason had a series on CBS called “Jackie Gleason: American Scene Magazine.” Gleason will make a cameo appearance as bus driver Ralph Kramden on a 1968 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
On his TV show, Danny Kaye invites Lucy to dance along with him as he sings “All By Myself” by Irving Berlin in 1921. The song was covered by many singers, among them Bobby Darin in 1961 and Sue Raney in 1963.
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
When Lucy smashes Danny Kaye's cigar into his face, he says, "I'm just lucky she didn't set fire to my nose." In the classic episode “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) Lucy Ricardo sets fire to her own putty nose while pestering William Holden.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo crushed Uncle Alberto's cigars in “The Ricardo's Visit Cuba” (ILL S6;E9).
Tumblr media
She also dumps a tray of food on Kaye's head at a fancy restaurant just as she'd done to Holden at the Brown Derby in "Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16).
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball is also involved in a fashion show in “The Fashion Show” (ILL S4;E19) and will be again on a 1968 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
In another reference to “I Love Lucy,” Lucy tells Danny Kaye she can play "Glow Worm" on her saxophone. She'd croaked out that tune many times as Lucy Ricardo.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets the Queen” (ILL S5;E15) was doubtless inspired by Danny Kaye’s November 1948 Command performance for King George and Princess Elizabeth at the Palladium Theatre. In fact, Kaye is referenced in this episode:
Lucy (to the Bellboy): Have you ever seen the Queen? Bellhop: No, ma'am. But I came frightful close during the coronation. I just missed her. But I did catch a glimpse of him. Lucy: Philip? Bellhop: No, ma'am. Danny Kaye.
Tumblr media
In a 1959 episode of “The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour” Lucy complains about how many meals she’s cooked as a housewife:
Ricky (reading Variety): It says here that Danny Kaye is going to London to give another command performance for Queen Elizabeth. Lucy: I wonder what the Queen is cooking for Phil tonight?
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Location Scout! “The Danny Kaye Show” was shot in Los Angeles, California. Lucy Carmichael lives in Danfield, New York. In the opening dialogue of his TV show, Kaye admits to being in New York, so perhaps this was supposed to be a rare exception to their normal West Coast filming schedule.
Tumblr media
Pole Vaulting! When Lucy barges through the crowd waiting for a table at the restaurant, she knocks over the velvet rope barrier pole. The Maitre d' calmly rights it again.
Tumblr media
Backstage Logic Alert! In the middle of Danny Kaye's TV monologue, Lucy's suitcase bursts open and clothes fly out. It is unlikely, however, that a prop suitcase that was not supposed to be opened on air would have anything inside it.

Ed Orgeron on camps battle with Texas and Hal Mumme: ‘Keep Louisiana in Louisiana’
The LSU head coach explains why he’s trying to keep out-of-state schools out of state.
LSU head coach Ed Orgeron wants to keep Louisiana prospects either at LSU or Louisiana’s other universities. How he’s going about that has caught the attention of school as big as Texas and as small as Division III Belhaven University.
“We want to keep Louisiana in Louisiana,” Orgeron told SB Nation Wednesday.
LSU is exhorting other Louisiana schools to keep programs like Texas and Michigan from on-campus camps. In turn, LSU is camping with every Louisiana school it can, from old rival Tulane to FCS programs like Nicholls State.
“When we do our camps in Louisiana, we have a representation of 10 other colleges in Louisiana,” he said. “And it’s affordable so that every young man in the state of Louisiana who wants to come can, to come and get offered a scholarship. Ten schools ... that’s 250 scholarships that could been offered there. There’s a lot of young men who come to our camp with offers from smaller schools who get offers from that camp.”
Satellite camps have long been a hot-button issue.
On Tuesday, Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel reported the camp that would feature LSU and Texas — hosted by Belhaven in Baton Rouge and then later in Hammond, La. — was cancelled.
The reasoning? Belhaven coach Hal Mumme said “political pressure” from LSU.
Belhaven’s camp—originally slated for BREC Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge—appeared to be in danger early this week, as political pressure on a local high school coach threatened the stadium agreement. Belhaven coaches had linked up with Memorial Stadium officials, Mumme said, and agreed to pay them $500 for the use of the stadium to host the camp. But Louisiana political forces managed to end that planned camp.
“We're in LSU's backyard,” Madison Prep head coach Mike Roach said via Sports Illustrated. “Louisiana home cooking may have played a part in it.”
There have been some other Louisiana camp cancellations and disinvites.
Two other camps, at Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana College, broke ties with Power 5 schools from out of state. Tulane is set to host one on June 16 ...

... and Michigan was originally invited, but Jim Harbaugh’s staff was replaced with LSU. Harbaugh said that was the result of “football factories”trying to prevent competitors on their turf.
Wednesday, coaches from TCU and Texas Tech, including head coach Kliff Kingsbury, attended a camp at HBCU Southern University in Baton Rouge. A source at LSU confirmed that Southern head coach Dawson Odums had told Orgeron that the event had been arranged prior to Orgeron becoming the full-time head coach.
Orgeron said he’d claim the state of Louisiana.
As And The Valley Shook wrote, recruiting is all about defending your turf.
All of this is to say that Orgeron knows well how to play the game. He mastered that long ago. Do I think Orgeron played a role in keeping Michigan and Texas out of Louisiana? Of course I do. This is a man that will seek to gain every possible recruiting advantage possible. Applying a little local pressure to the benefit of LSU hardly moves the needle.

The other side of the coin, from Burnt Orange Nation:
While the satellite camp would have allowed Texas access to top talent in Louisiana, there’s also an element of public service to those appearances.
Louisiana, in particular, is one of the poorest states in the country with a poverty rate hovering near 20 percent, so many prospects, most of whom would never have the opportunity to attend a Texas camp, would have received a chance to be coached by Herman that otherwise wouldn’t exist.
Of course, it would be foolish to claim complete altruism on the part of the Longhorns head coach, but equally foolish to completely deny it — Herman wasn’t planning on showing up and only providing instruction to the several prospects in whom he might have an interest.
Why do some coaches not like satellite camps again?
Essentially, it’s a chance to take your camp on the road. Coaches from less-talented areas get to see kids compete, and vice versa; kids get to connect with coaches that aren’t nearby. Some schools in hotbed regions, mostly SEC ones, have complained.
"We don't think that satellite camps are healthy in college football recruiting, and they are about recruiting," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said last May. "I am concerned and I think this conference remains concerned about what happens around those camps throughout this summer."
They were banned by the NCAA in April 2016, before that decision was quickly overturned, much to the relief of Harbaugh, one of the more outspoken supporters, and even some SEC coaches.
Some head coaches believe satellite camps are great for the sport.
In May 2015, eventual Oregon head coach Willie Taggart said camps are a positive thing for players.
"It allows coaches to share information and network. We're getting kids on our campus, which is huge. That's the most important thing for us."
Taggart has a broader perspective than most coaches. As a former all-state high school quarterback in Bradenton, Fla., he went through the national recruiting process in 1993. He bristles at the idea of fairness between schools and conferences.
"I think the wrong message has been put out. No one's really talking about how good it is for the kids. If you really think about it, this is the right thing to do. Kids are going to camps all over the country, spending all this money to try and get the most amount of exposure, when it's the schools that have all the money.
"The schools should be moving around so the players can get a larger variety of teams."
One of the biggest critics was Alabama’s Nick Saban, who said last year that camps were “bad for college football” and weren’t well-regulated. Well, guess who showed up at a USF camp over the weekend?
Nick Saban arrives to his first satellite camp http://pic.twitter.com/fX4GtrprYA
— Josh Newberg (@joshnewberg247) June 10, 2017
Short version:
Everybody — Texas, LSU, Michigan, Alabama, mid-majors, and Division III schools — is doing whatever they believe will ultimately help them win football games.

STANLEY FARRAR
October 4, 1910
Tumblr media
Stanley Farrar was born in Alameda, California, on October 4, 1910. He moved  to Los Angeles, where he worked in radio, and he also appeared as a character actor in films and television shows.
Tumblr media
His first screen role was an uncredited background appearance in 1947′s Fear in the Night starring Paul Kelly and Ann Doran.  He made his TV debut in a 1950 episode of “The Lone Ranger” (above, with Clayton Moore).
Tumblr media
Farrar did two episodes of “I Love Lucy”.  The first was “Home Movies” (ILL S3;E20) in March 1954. Lucy and the Mertzes turn the Ricardo apartment into a mini movie studio to film their own Western musical drama to show to “the most powerful man in show business, Mr. Bennett Green.” In reality, Bennett Green was the name of Desi’s stand-in! He also made 20 appearances on the show as well as “The Lucy Show” (inset photo), but in this instance the character is played not by Green, but by Stanley Farrar.
Tumblr media
Farrar returned to the series to play the Ferry Officer in “Staten Island Ferry” (ILL S5;E12). He is the one to wake a drowsy Lucy and Fred to inform him that they’ve had several trips on the Ferry, not just one!
Tumblr media
In December 1963, he did a single episode of “The Greatest Show on Earth”, a Desilu circus series based on the Cecil B. DeMille film.  It just so happened to be the one episode that featured Lucille Ball as “The Lady in Limbo”.  Farrar played the circus’s business manager.  Jack Palance starred.
Tumblr media
In April 1964, Farrar played a small role in “The Lucille Ball Comedy Hour: Mr. & Mrs.” with Bob Hope. He was a board member in a boardroom scene along with Bennett Green - the actor whose name he was given on his first appearance with Lucy!
Tumblr media
Ferrar also appeared in two episodes of “The Lucy Show.” When “Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (TLS S3;E15) in 1964, Kaye is in the company of two business associates, one played by Farrar (right) and the other by Hal Taggart.
Tumblr media
In the opening scene of “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (TLS S3;E25) in 1965, Farrar plays a member of the Danfield Community Players.
STAN at DESILU
Tumblr media
Between 1958 and 1962, Farrar played three different doctors on six episodes of Desilu’s “The Real McCoys”.
Tumblr media
From 1961 to 1965, Farrar turned up as various citizens of Mayberry in “The Andy Griffith Show” filmed on the Desilu backlot. He was in four episodes. In one (above) he played a pickle judge at the county fair! One of those episodes featured former Little Ricky Keith Thibodeaux.
Tumblr media
Farrar did small roles in two episodes of Desilu’s hit crime series “The Untouchables” both in 1962.
His final screen appearance was on the short-lived TV series “Mr. Deed Goes To Town” in October 1969.
He was married to Margo Farrar and they had three children, Paul, Michael, and Christopher. After 30 years in the industry, he retired to Mendocino, California, where he became an active member of the local artistic and dramatic community.
Stanley Farrar died of a heart attack while on stage in a play in Mendocino, California. He was 63 years old.

Lucy and Robert Goulet
S6;E8~ October 30, 1967
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
When a trucker named Chuck Willis is turned down for a loan, Lucy notices his remarkable resemblance to Robert Goulet.  She is determined to help him win a look-alike contest and enlists Mr. Mooney as her photographer.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney)
Roy Roberts (Harrison Winfield Cheever) and Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane Lewis) do not appear in this episode, although Mary Jane is mentioned.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Robert Goulet (Chuck Willis / Himself / Arthur Finster) was born in Massachusetts to a French-Canadian family.  His first big break was as Sir Lancelot in the Broadway musical Camelot, introducing “If Ever I Would Leave You” which became his signature song. Goulet was on Broadway at the same time that Lucille Ball was appearing in her one and only musical Wildcat. Less than a year after this episode was filmed, Goulet appeared on Broadway again in The Happy Time, for which he won a Tony Award.  He was successful in films, television, and recordings. This is his only appearance with Lucille Ball.  He died in 2007 at the age of 73.
Willis owns a small trucking company consisting of one truck that is 21 years old.
Tumblr media
Mary Wickes (Miss Hurlow) was one of Lucille Ball’s closest friends and at one time, a neighbor. She made a memorable appearances on “I Love Lucy” as ballet mistress Madame Lamond in “The Ballet” (ILL S1;E19). In her initial “Lucy Show” appearances her characters name was Frances, but she then made four more as a variety of characters. Wickes also appeared in nine episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”  Their final collaboration on screen was “Lucy Calls the President” in 1977.
Miss Hurlow is Robert Goulet’s assistant, in charge of sorting through submissions for his look-alike contest.
Tumblr media
Lucie Arnaz (Dotty) was the real life daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. She previously appeared on “The Lucy Show” as Cynthia, a friend of Lucy’s daughter Chris. She also did background appearances, most recently with her brother Desi Jr. in “Lucy at Marineland” (S5;E1). This is her final appearance on “The Lucy Show” before becoming a regular on “Here’s Lucy.”
Dotty works at the studio with Mary Jane.  Although called Dotty in the dialogue, the end credits list her as Dorothy.
Tumblr media
Vanda Barra (Waitress) makes the first of her six appearances on the series. She was married to Sid Gould, so is Lucille Ball's cousin-in-law.  She will also make 23 appearances on “Here's Lucy” as well as appearing in Ball's two 1975 TV movies “Lucy Gets Lucky” (with Dean Martin) and “Three for Two” (with Jackie Gleason).
Sid Gould (Messenger) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton.
Tumblr media
Joan Carey (Bank Customer, uncredited) was a frequent background player on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show” where she eventually became Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in.
Customers, bank employees, and bank customers are all played by uncredited extras.  The episode also includes a live horse, which Lucy addresses as 'Dobbin.’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the only episode written by Douglas Morrow.  Morrow was primarily known as the screenwriter of Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956). The film featured frequent “Lucy Show” extras George DeNormand, James Gonzales, Mike Lally, and Hal Taggart.  The movie was remade in 2009.
Nepotism Alert!  This episode features three of Lucille Ball's relatives (Lucie Arnaz, Vanda Barra, and Sid Gould) and her old friend Mary Wickes. Gary Morton, Ball's husband, was executive producer and the show's warm-up act.  All of them, with the addition of her son Desi Arnaz Jr., will also be part of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
It seems possible that Dotty's dialogue was originally written for Mary Jane, but that Croft was either ill or unavailable. This also seemed to be the case in “Lucy Gets Her Diploma” (S6;E5) where Doris Singleton took the best friend role with lines that could easily have been spoken by Mary Jane.  Of course, Lucille Ball might have also have been trying to find work for old friend Singleton and her daughter by reassigning previously written roles while Croft was on salary as a contract performer.
Tumblr media
The date this episode first aired (October 30, 1967), actor Charles Trowbridge died.  He had appeared with Lucille Ball in Her Husband's Affairs (1947) and A Woman of Distinction (1950), which also featured Gale Gordon. Trowbridge was a veteran of 25 Broadway plays.
The look-alike contest is said to be tied in to Goulet's new picture The Long Ride of Marshall Burke. Although this is not a real movie, it was not uncommon for actors' appearances to be tied to the release of their newest motion picture. For example, on “I Love Lucy” John Wayne waived nearly all his salary in return for promotional mention (and a large poster) of Blood Alley (1955).
Tumblr media
The waitress (Vanda Barra) sarcastically calls Lucy 'Diamond Jane Brady' after ordering just a bowl of hot water to save money.  James Buchanan Brady (1856-1917) aka Diamond Jim Brady, was a real-life millionaire and philanthropist who was fond of jewels (hence the nickname). Lucy adds ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, lemon, salt, pepper, and crackers making a sort of tomato soup. Lucille Ball claimed that this was something she actually did when she was a young model / actress living in a boarding house in New York City.
Tumblr media
Seeing Lucy's odd concoction, Dotty says “Congratulations. You're winning the war on poverty.”  The War on Poverty is the unofficial name for legislation first introduced by President Johnson during his State of the Union address on January 8, 1964.
Tumblr media
Lucy says she once entered an Elizabeth Taylor look-alike contest and never even heard from them.  Elizabeth Taylor was frequently mentioned on “The Lucy Show.”  Taylor will play herself in a 1970 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney says that Lucy takes longer to eat lunch than Henry the Eighth. The English monarch (1491-1547) was famous for his girth and huge appetite.  Charles Laughton (above) played the gluttonous monarch in a 1933 British film.
Tumblr media
We finally learn the name of the movie studio that Mary Jane (and Dotty) work for: Mammoth Studios. Mammoth Studios is the generic name used for fictional movie studios in movies, television, books and comic books. Mammoth Pictures Studios has appeared in movies such as Bombshell (1933), Abbott and Costello in Hollywood (1945),  and Merton of the Movies (1947), as well as the television series “The Beverly Hillbillies” (1964-71), “The Monkees" (1966-68) and “Bewitched” (1964-72).
Tumblr media
Lucy thinks a photo of the Grand Canyon is Mr. Mooney's wife. Mr. Mooney agrees that is does look like Irma with her mouth open.  Ouch!
Tumblr media
Trying to flatter Mr. Mooney about his photography, Lucy calls him another Leonardo da Vinci. The Renaissance painter and inventor (1452-1519) is considered one of the greatest artists to have ever lived. He is probably most famous for his painting of the Mona Lisa, which Lucy embodied in “Lucy Goes To Art Class” (S2;E15).  Mr. Mooney's ego knows no bounds!
Tumblr media
Looking at the aging horse with the sagging back, Mr. Mooney asks “That's a horse?” Lucy replies “What did you expect for $3?  Man o' War?”  Man o' War (1917-47) is considered one of the greatest race horses of all time. He won 20 of 21 races and won nearly $250,000 in purses. Live horses have been part of several “Lucy Show” episodes: “Lucy Visits the White House” (S1;E25), “Kiddie Parties Inc.” (S2;E2), “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (S3;E23),  “Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest” (S4;E6), and “Lucy Discovers Wayne Newton” (S4;E14).
Tumblr media
When Mr. Mooney helps Chuck Willis get on a horse for his photo, he comments that there probably was not this much trouble making Gone with the Wind. Lucille Ball was considered for the lead role in Gone With the Wind (1939), which went to Vivian Leigh (right) instead.
Tumblr media
Spoilers! The winner of the Robert Goulet contest is Arthur Finster. Second place went to Melvin Koppel, and Irving Schwartz came in third. Finster is the only contestant who appears on camera.
Tumblr media
To show of his famous voice, Robert Goulet sings a song that he says he wrote, accompanying himself on the piano.
Tumblr media
When Miss Hurlow says that Mr. Mooney's photo of Chuck Willis does look a bit like him, Robert Goulet says “that's the worst thing said about me since I forgot the words to 'The Star Spangled Banner'.”  At the 1965 Muhammad Ali / Sonny Liston fight, Canadian Robert Goulet famously sang "the dawn's early night" instead of "the dawn's early light," leading some boxing fans to conclude that Goulet was predicting Ali's first-round knockout of the former champ.
Robert Goulet, Chuck Willis, and Arthur Finster are never seen on the set at the same time, so it is possible (due to the configuration of the doors) that Goulet did the quick changes in one take, without cutting. Possible, but unlikely.
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
Dean Martin also had a look-alike on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (S4;E21). In “Lucy and the Plumber” (S3;E2) Harry Tuttle is a ringer for comedian Jack Benny.
Tumblr media
Lucy Carter will enter a Lucille Ball look-alike contest in a 1974 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Trouble mounting a horse was also a source for comedy in “The Fox Hunt” (ILL S5;E16) and “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (S3;E23).
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Logistics! To accommodate the action of the episode, Mr. Mooney's desk is in the bank lobby instead of his private office.
Tumblr media
Font of Inspiration! The Desilu set decorators use the same lettering for the door marked 'private' in Goulet's office as they used on the 'private' door behind Mr. Mooney's desk.
Purse Down! At the bank, Lucy accidentally knocks her purse off the counter. Goulet bends down and picks it up while she is writing down her address for him and the scene continues uninterrupted.
