Not Another First Draft-!
Yes, *DJ Khaled voice* ANOTHER ONE.
In the last two months or so, I’ve gotten to about ~37k (more like 50k if you count the stuff I scrapped) in my second draft of the historical fantasy, and this book is super intense to rewrite. Mostly because like, research, but also because it’s been taking me so long to figure out the backstory of the characters (I.... have been writing and scrapping and rewriting backstory SINCE SEPTEMBER. on and off, though.). I think it’s going to take me a while to make it readable and I’m okay with that because this is a story that is really important to me to tell.
So, I decided about a month ago to aim to write the second draft for only a chunk of it--the first fifth of the book--and then take a break to draft something new. A palate cleanser, something totally different. A YA contemporary!
I’m super excited about this new project. For the past two months, I've been jotting down plot bunnies and character ideas whenever inspiration struck, so I’ve got some material to start. And as per usual, I’ll be doing a weekly word count accountability thread on twitter [link].
The start of this first draft also coincides with the start of a Big year of school for me and I’m pretty... interested, shall we say, to see how this all shakes out. It may end up being a public self drag as my weekly word counts will probably be pathetic, but whatever. Slow is better than nothing. I think it’s gonna be fun regardless, and no matter how long it takes, I’ll finish with a first draft of something brand-new!*
*there is one (1) circumstance in which I would stop drafting in favour of something else, but it’s a pretty slim possibility. However, I feel compelled to state that it could happen, since I’m all about self-accountability. ;)

Finished another first draft!
So, in case it wasn’t obvious from my twitter, I’ve been working on a new story for the past four months (technically, I started it in January, but after I won a mentorship with my previous MS, I put it aside for a while). And now... that first draft is finished! Here is my twitter progress thread.
I hesitate to talk about what the story is about when it’s still in these developmental stages, because huge things about it may still change. But for now, I'll share my current vision. it’s a fantasy/historical adventure, with some vague DC LEGENDS OF TOMORROW x THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE vibes. And it’s also got childhood friends to lovers to exes to [ well, you’d have to read the book to find out ;) ].
It’s going to take a looooot of revision both because I suck and because the concept itself requires a lot of research. But that’s okay. It’s all part of the process.
I kind of liken my process to making a clay sculpture (this is based off my extremely basic knowledge of sculpting in high school art classes). Your idea is just in your head, and in front of you, you have this great big block of clay. It could become anything. A masterpiece, or a piece of garbage. That can be scary.
So you just have to dive in. But of course, it doesn’t turn out exactly how you want it to on your first try. In fact, it kind of sucks. It’s sloppy, and eventually you give up on trying to render the tiniest details you imagined in your head, and just try to make out the general shape using your hands and water to mold it. It doesn’t look like much of anything, but-- finally-- it’s a start. That’s the first draft.
Then, revising is like-- going back to that vague shape and starting to actually attempt more details. And of course you make mistakes. Sometimes you have to just pull off a chunk of clay and try that section again. Or something breaks off your sculpture and you have to apply it back on. Or you get the idea for something new to add to your sculpture and you have to figure out how to make it fit into the existing shape-- Or you realize the WHOLE thing is lopsided and you have to start from scratch-- but this time, you’ve got the lessons you learned in your first try, and your new ideas, helping you through it.
Then, the fine details (line editing). And filling in any cracks, smoothing out any rough edges. Making it shine to perfection (or, as close as you can get!).
And then putting your finished sculpture in the kiln, which I suppose in this metaphor would be like publishing your story lmao.
So, obviously, I’m at the “vague shape of sculpture” stage. And there’s a lot of challenging work ahead, but I’m excited tbh. Milestones like this are worth celebrating to me. First drafts are magical-- you’ve done something incredible in even getting your ideas down on the page. Your first draft may be garbage, but at least it’s a something to work with. At least your idea is finally solidified into a reality.
Anyway, I’m going to take a small break before I fully dive back into this mess for a first pass revision. I think I’ll catch up on some TV I’ve been meaning to binge and finish reading that book I’ve been working on (AND I DARKEN by Kiersten White-- it’s amazing so far!). And also there are a couple of movies I’ve been meaning to watch. And also I’m going back to school soon! So lots going on. Excited to tackle it.
