Chapter 321: In the Gardens (Pt. 1)
The afternoon sun shone brightly over Howerton House, where Weston’s upper class gathered each year for what had become one of the highlights of the social season.
Tumblr media
Langston Crawford, the Tenth Earl of Howerton, stood next to his wife, Gabriella, as they chatted with their sovereign, Prince Stephen, and Princess Jessica.
Tumblr media
“I wish my father could have been here today,” Langston said. “Our annual garden party was one of his favorite events, and I’m sure he would have been honored to have you here, your royal highness.”
Tumblr media
“Nonsense,” Stephen replied. “The honor is mine. Your father was a dear friend and trusted advisor, and his passing was a blow to all of Weston. Not that you haven’t lived up to his standard, Langston – from what I hear, you have become a real force in the National Assembly, just as he was.”
“Thank you, your royal highness,” Langston replied, smiling. “I hope you and her highness enjoy yourselves this afternoon.”
Tumblr media
Nearby, Michael and Ted stood with Fred and a nervous Brent, who impatiently waited for his girlfriend, Sarah Parker to arrive with her parents.
“Calm down, Brent,” Ted said. “Everything is going to be fine.”
Brent took a deep breath.
Tumblr media
“I know,” he said. “I’m sorry. I’m just ready to get this over with.”
“You’re not the only one,” Freddy said, rolling his eyes.
“So what about you?” Brent asked Ted. “Is Jackson coming today?”
Tumblr media
“No, we’re trying to keep a low profile,” Ted said. “His family isn’t as open minded as mine, so we have to be ….”
“There she is!” Brent exclaimed, launching himself toward Sarah and her parents as they stood chatting with the Howertons.
Tumblr media
The others watched as he bowed formally to Edward Parker, the Viscount Finchley, and his wife, Lady Madeline, then kissed Sarah’s hand tenderly.
“You know, they really are a perfect match,” Fred said. “They’re both quintessential aristocrats when it comes down to it.”
Tumblr media
“He definitely has the manners for it,” Ted said, grinning. “But I’m not going to complain. I’d never have made it through my first season without him.”
“True,” Michael said. “His knowledge of protocol is flawless, but … hold on, who is THAT?”
Tumblr media
Ted and Fred followed Michael’s eyes to a striking young woman across the park.
“That, my friend, is Lady Helena Reynolds, the Baroness Wexton,” Fred said.

Chapter 303: Family Night
“Stop minimizing your accomplishments, Michael,” Prince Stephen said, disapprovingly. He turned to Ted and smiled. “He’s actually shown quite a flair for economic policy, and has taken a very creative approach to job creation that is truly making a difference along the north coast, where the fishing industry is waning.”
Tumblr media
“I’d heard something about that,” Ted said, nodding. “Since global warming has impacted fishing yields, Weston has been shifting labor toward offshore wind farming to bolster the energy sector.”
“Well, it seemed logical,” Michael said, humbly.
“Not just logical, but brilliant,” Stephen said, proudly. “Killed two birds with one stone, since additional energy production is our number one goal to help expand Weston’s economy.”
Tumblr media
“Then it seems you’re better at princing than you seem to think you are,” Ted joked to his stepbrother.
“He certainly is,” Stephen said, ignoring the hated phrase his two sons had been tossing about since childhood. “Michael’s problem is self-confidence, not ability.”
“Teddy!” Stephanie cried as she and her husband entered the room, shifting the family’s attention away from a grateful Michael. “I didn’t realize you were in town. No wonder father was so insistent we come.”
Tumblr media
Ted kissed his sister’s cheek as everyone greeted one another.
“You’re looking well,” Stephanie said, taking a seat. “Obviously, the posting in Torenth has been good for you.”
“I could say the same about both of you,” Ted replied. “I hear you’re representing the family well. But then you’ve always been quite good at smiling and waving.”
“If that was all there was to it, we’d all be successful, wouldn’t we?” Michael said, shaking his head.
Tumblr media
“Oh, stop feeling sorry for yourself, little brother,” Stephanie said. “So you froze up at a dinner. Even I dislike giving speeches like that, so stop beating yourself up and just move forward.”
“That’s exactly what I told him,” Teddy said.
Sensing Michael’s discomfort, Jessica stepped in.
Tumblr media
“Why don’t we talk about something else?” she suggested, nodding at the grateful look Michael gave her. “Teddy? I’m sure we’d all like to hear about your time in Torenth.”
“Well, there’s not that much to tell, really,” Teddy said. “I spend most of my time at the embassy, but I’ve done a bit of sightseeing. Torenth is lovely, but it’s certainly not home.”
“Have you met the imperial family?” Stephanie asked.
Tumblr media
“Only once,” Ted replied. “At the Torenthian Museum of Natural History. The emperor and empress were honorary chairpersons of the annual fundraiser. The emperor and I chatted for several minutes. He seems a decent sort.”
“He is,” Stephen replied. “A bit stuffy, but it runs in the family.”
“What are your plans?” Stephanie asked. “Will you be here for a while?”
Tumblr media
“Only a few days,” Ted said. “But I want to spend some time with friends. Michael and I are meeting Freddy and Brent for drinks later tonight.”
Stephen stood.
“Well, just don’t forget your responsibilities, son,” he told Michael. “We’re meeting with the labor delegation from Grenville Bay tomorrow morning bright and early.”
“Can’t you handle that on your own, dad?” Michael asked.
Tumblr media
“That’s not the point and you know it,” Stephen said. “I’m trying to prepare you for the throne, Michael. It’s not a responsibility you can fulfill only when it’s convenient.”
Jessica stood and spoke softly to her husband.
Tumblr media
“Michael has been very diligent in his duties, and you know that,” she said, softly. “I think he’s earned a bit of time off, don’t you?”
“Very well, then,” the prince said with a sigh. “Consider yourself on vacation until Teddy returns to Torenth. But I’ll expect you to redouble your efforts when that happens.”
Tumblr media
“I will, father,” Michael said, smiling. “I promise.”
Bixby entered quietly.
“Dinner is served, your royal highness,” he said.

Chapter 301: Welcome Home (Pt. 1)
“Thank you, Marta,” Dr. Mark Philson said to the nurse as she entered notes into the computer. “You can finish up here, and please see to it the blood and tissue samples get over to the lab.”
Tumblr media
“Of course, doctor,” Marta replied without looking up.
Tumblr media
“So I assume you’re giving me a clean bill of health?” Prince Stephen III of Weston said as Dr. Philson emerged from the examination area that had been set up in one of the palace’s rarely used chambers.
Tumblr media
“That remains to be seen, your royal highness,” the doctor replied. “Once I have your test results back, I’ll know for sure. But for now, I think it’s safe to say you’re in relatively good health for a man your age.”
“Come now, doctor, I’ve only just turned 50,” Stephen replied, annoyed. “I certainly don’t consider myself old yet.”
Tumblr media
“True,” Dr. Philson said. “But you drink too much and exercise too little, sir, so forgive me if I can’t declare you a model of good health.”
Stephen suppressed a grin.
Tumblr media
“Fair enough,” he said. “But what about the stomach issues I’ve been having?”
Tumblr media
“Again, I’ll defer judgement until the tests come back, but I would guess it’s simply a matter of diet. Too much rich food. I would recommend a more basic diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry and whole grains – and cut back on red meat.”
“You’re simply determined to ruin my quality of life, aren’t you?” Stephen joked.
Tumblr media
He turned to his majordomo, Bixby, who stood by the door.
“Bix, would you be so kind as to show the doctor out?”
Tumblr media
“Of course, sir,” Bixby replied, resisting the urge to smile himself. “Prince Theodore is still waiting to see you in the library, your royal highness.”
“Yes,” Stephen replied.  “I’ll see him now.”
Tumblr media
He turned back to the royal physician.
“Thank you, doctor,” he said. “I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

Chapter 315: A Night By the Fire
“I do hope that Stephanie and Theresa will be alright,” Jessica said. “I’m surprised that you let them take the jet to Egypt by themselves.”
Tumblr media
“Why?” Stephen said, surprised. “They’re not children anymore, Jess. Had I refused, they would have just taken a commercial flight.”
Jessica sighed.
Tumblr media
“I suppose you’re right,” she said. “But with Theresa’s mother missing, I just don’t feel comfortable having them there alone. Let's face it, Stephanie has never been one to take any threat seriously.”
Tumblr media
“I agree, which is why I asked the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to provide additional security,” Stephen said. “I’ve requested that they check in frequently with Sam Benedict, so I’ll know right away if anything dangerous comes up.”
Jessica smiled.
“I should have known you’d be taking precautions,” she replied.
Tumblr media
“Of course I am,” Stephen said. “I’m more concerned about our sons, actually. I’d hoped to spend more time with Ted while he was home, but I’ve hardly seen him – or Michael, for that matter – since he arrived.”
“Oh, leave them be,” Jessica said. “They’re two young men – the last thing they want to do is spend all their free time with us! It’s just ….”
“What?” Stephen asked.
Tumblr media
“Well, I get the feeling Teddy is seeing someone, but he won’t tell me who it is,” Jessica replied.
“That’s pretty normal, isn’t it?” Stephen asked.
“I suppose so,” Jessica said. “It’s just that, when he loves, he does it with his whole heart. Remember Nathan from high school?”
Tumblr media
“Don’t remind me,” Stephen said. “He broke Ted’s heart when he ended their relationship. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in that much pain.”
“Exactly,” Jessica said. “That’s why I want to know more about whomever it is he’s seeing.”
Tumblr media
“Look,” Stephen said, putting an arm around his wife’s shoulders. “It’s normal to want to protect our children from anything that could hurt them. But, unfortunately, there comes a time when we just have to trust that we’ve raised them well enough to get through any heartache that comes their way.”
“You’re right, of course,” Jessica replied. “But that doesn’t make it any easier for us, does it?”
Tumblr media
“No, it doesn’t,” Stephen said, leaning in for a kiss. “But it does allow us to focus on … other things.”

Chapter 145: Royal Greetings
Tumblr media
“Welcome to Hillningham, Your Majesty,” Stephen said, stepping forward. Next to him, Elizabeth stood smiling.
Tumblr media
“Your royal highness,” King Henry said, formally. “I appreciate your gracious invitation, and am glad to finally meet the lovely Princess Elizabeth.
Tumblr media
He stepped forward and kissed Elizabeth’s hand gently.
“And I’m so happy to meet you, as well,” she said. “Stephen has always spoken so highly of you.”
“Indeed?” the king said. “I am relieved to hear that. After recent events, I feared my image may have become somewhat tarnished.”
Tumblr media
“Not at all, Will … I’m sorry, King Henry,” Stephen replied, flustered.
“Stephen, we have known each other for many years,” the king said, smiling. “I haven’t become used to the new name myself, so please don’t apologize. And feel free to address me however you prefer in private.”
Stephen smiled. “Thank you,” he said. “Well, I’m sure you’re tired after your trip. Shall we go inside?”
Tumblr media
Elizabeth took their guest’s arm and led him toward the door, Stephen following.
“We’re so glad you could join us here on holiday,” Stephen said. “You said you were hoping for a less formal visit, so hopefully this will give you a chance to relax while you’re here.”
Tumblr media
“I hope so,” King Henry replied. “We have much to discuss, but I do appreciate you both allowing me to intrude upon your holiday. It just seemed to be the best option, given the current situation.”
“You’re not intruding at all,” Elizabeth replied, smiling. “We’re so happy you’ve come, aren’t we, dear?”
Tumblr media
“Absolutely,” Stephen said. “Honestly, I was quite worried that, after everything that happened, you and I would lose touch. Hopefully this will help us get past all of that.”
“I hope so, Stephen,” the king said. “I really do.”
Tumblr media
“Good,” Elizabeth said. “I’m glad that’s settled. Now let’s get you settled in. Cook has prepared a light luncheon for us on the terrace. I’m sure you must be hungry.”

Chapter 156: The King Departs
Tumblr media
“I’m so glad you could visit, Will,” Stephen said. “Are you sure you won’t consider staying one more evening. I know Elizabeth would have liked to say goodbye personally, but she agreed to tour the village hospital weeks ago. Were you to stay the night, she could see you off in the morning and ….”
Tumblr media
“I’m afraid I’ll be needed at home,” King Henry interrupted. “And besides, I want to present our agreement to my ministers as quickly as possible as a first step toward parliamentary approval.”
“I understand,” Stephen replied. “I’m so glad I got to spend some time with you, although Elizabeth may be right when she called us trouble when we’re together.”
The king laughed.
Tumblr media
“Well, we did always give headmaster headaches at Basilton Prep, didn’t we?” he asked. “I guess times haven’t changed as much as we would like to think they have.”
Tumblr media
“Perhaps not,” Stephen said. “But I’m rather impressed with the work we were able to accomplish together. If all goes well, this could solve a lot of problems for both our houses.”
Tumblr media
“Indeed,” King Henry replied. “Please give Elizabeth my best … and congratulations, by the way.”
“For …” Stephen started, then gaped. “How did you know?”
“Merely a guess,” the king replied. “But it wasn’t difficult to figure out – she’s positively glowing, my friend.”
Stephen smiled broadly.
Tumblr media
“Well, thank you, Will,” Stephen said. “We’re not quite ready to announce anything yet, so ….”
“I won’t breathe a word to anyone, I promise,” the king said.
“Good,” Stephen said. “Then I’ll bid you farewell. Hopefully, we’ll see each other again soon in Corwyn to officially sign the agreement.”
“I do hope you’ll bring Elizabeth,” King Henry replied.
Tumblr media
“I will, of course, so long as you don’t try to steal her away,” Stephen said, smiling.
Tumblr media
“From the way she looks at you, Stephen, I doubt I would be successful,” King Henry replied, shaking the prince’s hand. “But if I’m fortunate enough to marry a woman only half as wonderful as your Elizabeth, I will consider myself a lucky man.”

Chapter 139: Surprise Judgement
Tumblr media
“Case number 34227-88,” the bailiff called out. “The Kingdom of Corwyn versus James Edward Wellesley, Chief Magistrate Linette Findley presiding.”
James stood quietly as his solicitor stood.
“Good afternoon, gentlemen,” the magistrate said without looking up.
Tumblr media
“Lady Justice,” James’ solicitor, John Meredith, said. “We were not informed of the purpose of this appearance, and have had no opportunity to prepare. This could put us at a significant disadvantage if the ….”
“Do not be concerned, Mr. Meredith,” the magistrate said. “No one was informed, including the prosecution. As such, the information I am about to provide is new to all involved.”
“Indeed?” the prosecutor asked. “Then this is highly unusual.”
Tumblr media
“Yes, it is,” Findley replied. “But then this entire case has been highly unusual, as I’m sure you’ll agree.”
Turning to James, the magistrate shuffled through papers for a moment, then looked up.
“Mr. Wellesley,” she said. “As I said, this has been an unusual case in virtually every respect. But even more so due to this latest development. I read the following statement on behalf of His Royal Highness Stephen III, Sovereign Prince of Weston.”
James looked up sharply, frowning, as the judge cleared her throat.
Tumblr media
(Reading): “As a husband, I find it difficult to set aside my anger against the accused, who attempted, albeit indirectly, to cause the death of my beloved wife, Her Serene Highness Princess Elizabeth of Weston. However, in consultation with my wife, whose merciful heart continues to astonish me, I have come to realize that my own actions were, in part, to blame for driving James Wellesley to commit this heinous crime. It is in that realization that I have decided to temper my anger with mercy.”
A murmur ran through the room as the impact of the magistrate’s words became clear.
Tumblr media
“As such, be it known on this day that I, Stephen III, by divine right Sovereign Prince of Weston, do hereby exercise my royal prerogative to … (she paused, surprised) … dismiss all charges against James Edward Wellesley. He will be given 30 days to find a host nation willing to provide political asylum, and, once transported there, will be barred from ever setting foot on Westonian soil again.”
“Under the circumstances, true forgiveness is something I cannot grant – as a man or a sovereign. However, I can attempt to offer understanding to finally lay this matter to rest once and for all. I am hopeful that, by doing so, I can bring all involved the peace they need to heal.”
Tumblr media
The magistrate looked up.
“The letter bears all of the necessary seals and signatures, and, as such, bears the weight of law based on Westonian custom,” she said. “I hereby dismiss all charges. Mr. Wellesley, you are hereby released, and may remain in Weston for 30 days or until a suitable host nation can be found to take you.”
“This court is adjourned.”
Tumblr media
Meredith stood to congratulate his client, who seemed almost dazed by the strange turn of events.
“I can’t believe it,” James said. “Why would he do this?”
“Who knows?” Meredith said. “You were facing life in prison. Maybe he realized that being a man without a country – a man without a home – would be the worst punishment possible for someone like you. But at least you’ll be free.”
Tumblr media
“Free,” James breathed. “I’ll never be free.”

Chapter 127: Dinner Conversations
“I know the timing isn’t the best, Steph, but we’ll only be gone for a few days,” Stephen said. “Normally, we’d take you with us, but you’ve missed so much school already that it’s best you stay here with mother.”
Tumblr media
“Besides,” Marie said, smiling, “this will give us a chance to get to know each other better and have some fun together.”
Stephanie grinned at her new grandmother.
“Okay, just not too much fun,” Elizabeth said to Marie, shaking her head. “Remember, the only reason we’re not taking her with us is that she needs to catch up in school. I’d rather her not get held back if we can avoid it.”
Tumblr media
“Of course she won’t!” Marie scoffed. “No Marchand has ever been held back, and Stephanie will be no exception I promise you. I just think there are more entertaining ways to learn than sitting at a desk reading a text book.”
“Uh oh,” Stephen said, smiling. “Not another pageant of great leaders, mother.”
Marie laughed.
“What’s that?” Stephanie asked.
Tumblr media
“Well, when I was about your age, I wasn’t doing very well in my history class,” Stephen said. “So mother gathered about a dozen servants and assigned each of them a role as a great person from various periods in history. She even rented costumes from the Weston National Theater so they’d look realistic!”
Tumblr media
“Wow!” Stephanie said, eyes wide. “That’s the coolest thing I ever heard!”
“I’m glad you think so, dear,” Marie said, grinning. “See, Stephen? I told you it was cool. And you passed history, didn’t you?”
“Actually, I believe I got an A that semester,” Stephen said, laughing.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes and leaned toward Stephanie.
Tumblr media
“Too bad your challenge is math,” she said. “But I can’t wait to see how she handles that one. Somehow I sense a visit from Sir Isaac Newton!”
Stephanie laughed.
“So why Hilningham?” Marie said, changing the subject. “While it’s lovely, we usually only stay there over the holidays.”
Tumblr media
“No specific reason,” Stephen said. “We just wanted to spend a little time in the country, and Hilningham is large enough to accommodate guests.”
“Guests?” Marie asked. “I didn’t know you planned to have guests.”
“Just a few,” Stephen said. “We’ve invited cousin Devon and the Viscount Perry for a day or two to discuss their new appointments.”
Tumblr media
“I know it’s a sore spot with you, Stephen, but Augusta is at her wits end with their friendship,” Marie said. “She’s afraid people are talking.”
“I’ve never understood why she cares so much what everyone else thinks,” Stephen replied, shaking his head.
“You know as well as I do that the court of public opinion can make or break any one of us,” Marie said. “Augusta simply wants to protect her son from any unseemly rumors.”
Tumblr media
“What kind of rumors?” Stephanie asked, interested.
“Never mind that,” Elizabeth said, standing. “Come on, Steph, let’s leave your dad and grandmother to talk.”
“Aww,” Stephanie said, sulking. “Okay.”
As Elizabeth and Stephanie left the room, and Stephen turned to his mother.
Tumblr media
“Mother, times have changed,” Stephen said. “This isn’t the 1950s anymore. And, while I’m not saying any of Aunt Augusta’s suspicions are valid – even if they were, what difference does it make?”
“What difference?” Marie said, shaking her head. “Until you and Elizabeth have a child of your own, Devon Grey is still your heir. Do you not think it would matter to the people, or to parliament, that the heir to the throne is a ….”
Tumblr media
“A what, mother?” Stephen said, sharply. “A fine, principled young man? A dedicated philanthropist who supports dozens of charitable organizations? Because that’s what he is. Anything beyond that is simply none of anyone’s business.”
She sighed.
Tumblr media
“Look, Stephen,” Marie continued. “I know that you have a soft spot for that young man – you always have. And while I’ve always thought his intellect left something to be desired, I don’t hold his … proclivities … against him – he can sleep with donkeys for all I care. But until he is replaced in the succession, he will not be safe from scandal if his relationship comes to light. You know that as well as I do.”
“I am painfully aware of his situation,” Stephen said. “As is Devon.”
“All I’m saying is that the young man should think more about the risk he is taking and less about satisfying his … desires,” Marie said.
“Sometimes, the heart wants what it wants, mother,” Stephen replied, standing and walking toward the door.
Tumblr media
“Just talk to him,” Marie said, rising. “Perhaps he would be willing to put off the relationship until such time as you can divert attention from him with a child of your own.”
“I’ll talk to him,” Stephen replied, over his shoulder. “But I will not force them to stop seeing one another. Not even a prince should have the power to tell his subjects who they may and may not love.”

Chapter 136: A Quiet Conversation
“Thank you for coming,” Stephen said as Devon entered his private office. “I’m trying to avoid actual work, since this is supposed to be a holiday, but, of course, that can be difficult in my position.”
Tumblr media
“I’m sure,” Devon replied, moving to a chair in front of the elegantly carved desk. “I can’t imagine how many demands you have on your time, but you seem to be handling it well.”
“As well as I can, I suppose,” Stephen said. “Not that I have any choice in the matter.”
Tumblr media
“So you wanted to talk privately?” Devon asked, his nervousness showing.
“Don’t worry, Devon,” Stephen said. “It’s nothing earth shattering. But I did want to talk about your responsibilities as my heir.”
Devon shifted uncomfortably.
“Well, hopefully I won’t be in that role for much longer,” Devon said. “I’m assuming you and Elizabeth are trying to get pregnant?”
Tumblr media
Stephen’s eyes dropped briefly, his pain evident.
“Oh, I’m sorry if that’s a sore spot, Stephen,” Devon added quickly. “Is there a problem?”
“No,” Stephen said, forcing a smile. “Not a problem, exactly. But I’m not rushing Beth to have a baby right away.”
“Oh,” Devon said, disappointed.
Tumblr media
“I know that’s probably not what you were hoping to hear, Devon,” Stephen said. “But I want you to understand why. You recall the attempt that was made on Beth’s life?”
“Yes,” Devon said. “The whole Wellesley mess – horrible business.”
“Indeed,” Stephen replied. “But what you probably don’t know is that Beth was pregnant when she was taken.”
Devon leaned forward, shocked.
Tumblr media
“Do you mean she ….”
“Yes,” Stephen said. “She miscarried while we were still in San Rios.”
Devon looked stricken.
“Stephen,” he said. “I’m … I’m so sorry.”
Stephen smiled weakly.
“Thank you, Devon,” he said. “Please understand that I’m telling you this, not for sympathy, but so that you understand the delay in us delivering Weston with an heir.”
Tumblr media
“Of course,” Devon said, standing. He turned to study the books on Stephen’s shelves, concealing his expression. “I completely understand why you wouldn’t want to push Beth for a baby now. She must have been devastated.”
“You can’t imagine,” Stephen said. “We both were.”
“Don’t worry, Stephen,” Devon said. “I can wait as long as I need to.”
“I know, and I appreciate that,” Stephen replied. “But you realize that means that it’s going to be at least a year or longer before you and Grant can even think about going public with your relationship.”
Tumblr media
Devon nodded, and turned to Stephen.
“We will both make whatever sacrifices are required,” he said.
Stephen felt his cousin’s pain, yet continued. He couldn’t turn back now.
“But you also realize that the longer you are my heir, the more attention you will be given,” he said. “In fact, I believe that it will only grow more intrusive. Until we can announce that Beth is expecting, you’re going to be under growing scrutiny. And with both of you living at Polk Cottage, there’s a good chance ....”
“I understand,” Devon replied, downcast.
Tumblr media
“Devon, you have to know that this isn’t at all the way I’d hoped this would go,” Stephen said. “My hope was that we’d have announced Beth’s pregnancy by now, which would have taken the pressure off. But now, with the additional attention you’re going to receive ....”
Tumblr media
“Would it really be so bad if they found out?” Devon asked, interrupting.
Stephen studied his cousin for a moment, surprised. He hadn’t expected that question.
“Perhaps not,” Stephen replied carefully. “But I want you to think about it very carefully. Are you ready to be on the cover of every paper and magazine? To see your face as the lead story on every news broadcast as the first openly gay royal in Weston’s history? Are you ready for that level of scrutiny? Because they won’t leave you alone for a moment.”
Devon stood quietly, seemingly thinking through the consequences, and Stephen circled the desk.
Tumblr media
“Think about it, Devon,” Stephen said, smiling. “That’s all I ask. If you and Grant truly believe you’re ready to shoulder that kind of publicity, then Beth and I will support you every step of the way. I hope you know that.”
“I do, Stephen,” Devon replied, smiling. “And believe me, I’ll consider it carefully.”
“And talk to Grant about it, of course,” Stephen said. “This is a decision you’ll need to make together.”
“I already know what his answer will be,” Devon said, grinning. “But I will certainly have that conversation.”
Tumblr media
“Very good, then,” Stephen said, extending a hand, which Devon shook. “I’m glad we talked.”
“Me, too, Stephen,” Devon said. “You’ve given me a lot to think about.”
“Just do what you think is best for you, Devon,” Stephen said. “I’ll stand with you no matter what you decide.”

Chapter 97: National Interests
“Good evening, Weston. I’m Scott Dearborn ….”
Tumblr media
“And I’m Rebecca Nash, and this is Weston News Tonight on WBN.”
“Our top story today isn’t what you might think.”
“No it’s not, Scott. While we were prepared to focus on coverage of today’s private royal wedding between Prince Stephen III and now-Princess Elizabeth, WBN has learned that the event was only one of several incredible events that have taken place over the past few days.”
Tumblr media
“The wedding was the culmination of several days worth of drama and international intrigue that is shaking the very foundations of Oceana’s political landscape.”
“That’s right, Rebecca. What started as a routine drive to her final wedding gown fitting turned into a nightmare for our new princess.  For details, we go live to Ryan Lively at the Weston Ministry of Defense.”
Tumblr media
“When Princess Elizabeth got into her car on Wednesday afternoon for the drive to Madame Valois’ studio, she was unaware that the driver of her vehicle was an international assassin wanted for murder in 17 countries. The criminal abducted the soon-to-be princess and fled to San Rios, a small South American nation.
“Fortunately, Weston’s royal security team was able to track their whereabouts, rescuing Princess Elizabeth and killing the assassin as he attempted to escape.
“While Princess Elizabeth was none the worse for wear, security forces found evidence that the assassin was hired by none other than James Wellesley, son of exiled Westonian traitor Daniel Wellesley, who died after taking refuge in Corwyn.”
Tumblr media
“As you may have heard, this same James Wellesley recently became engaged to Princess Grace of Corwyn, the youngest daughter of Her Majesty Queen Anne. As such, the web of responsibility becomes much more tangled, and Weston’s government and military leaders are anxiously waiting for a reaction from Varenna, where a formal request for extradition was delivered only a few hours ago.
In fact, many are questioning whether, if Queen Anne refuses to allow her future son-in-law to be extradited, there might be sanctions – or even military conflict – between Corwyn and Weston. So far, both governments have remained silent. It seems each side is waiting on the other for their next move.”
Tumblr media
“In the meantime, Weston continues to celebrate the wedding of its reigning Prince Stephen III to our new princess, Elizabeth Howes, at the Marchand family chapel earlier today. We’ll be providing exclusive, in-depth coverage of there ceremony tonight at 10 p.m.”
“So now we know why the royal family scaled back the wedding once again!”
“That’s right, Rebecca. Once Princess Elizabeth’s abduction was announced, it became clear that the ordeal had an impact on our new princess.”
“But I must say, Rebecca, I am so impressed with Princess Elizabeth’s strength and determination. For her to take only one day to recover from such a horrible experience before getting married – even in a smaller, more private ceremony, really showcases her strength and character.”
Tumblr media
“I agree, Scott. If anyone needed further proof that our new princess was up to the challenge, I think they’ve found it.”
“We’ll be back after these messages with more discussion about potential fallout as tensions escalate between Weston and Corwyn. Joining us will be Michael Sarrazin of the Weston Ministry of Defense and Shelley Bremmer, a member of Weston’s National Assembly and chairperson of the Foreign Relations Committee. So stay with us as we explore this potential crisis further.”

Chapter 115: Beauty & Grief
Tumblr media
Stephen found Elizabeth on the beach, staring out at the clear waters. They had arrived late the night before, and Stephen had allowed himself to sleep in.
“Good morning,” Elizabeth said, without turning around.
Tumblr media
“Wow,” Stephen said, looking around. “This is amazing.”
“Isn’t it?” Elizabeth replied. “Be sure to thank the emperor again for his generosity.”
“I will,” he said. “The Coraline Islands may be a Torenthian protectorate, but I have to say, Weston may have to invade just so we can have them to ourselves.”
Tumblr media
Elizabeth chuckled. “Oh god! I knew marrying a prince would be an adjustment, but the fact you just said that really brings it all into focus.”
Stephen laughed.
“Okay, so I’ll drop the military campaign and just enjoy the view, okay?” he said.
“And what a view it is,” Elizabeth replied, sitting upright. “I just wish we could stay longer.”
Tumblr media
“We can if you’d like to,” Stephen said, nodding to dismiss the servant who stood waiting with champagne. “But you insisted on getting back so we could welcome our new daughter sooner rather than later.”
“I know,” Elizabeth said. “And I can’t wait to be a mother to Stephanie ….”
“But?”
“But so much as happened, Stephen,” she said, rising and taking a few steps down the beach. “Standing here, I can almost pretend that it didn’t.”
Stephen nodded.
Tumblr media
“Almost,” he said. “But it did happen, Beth. And somehow, we’re both going to have to find a way to accept it.”
“I know,” Elizabeth replied. “He’s gone.”
“Yes, he is,” he said.
Elizabeth smiled, weakly.
“I don’t even know for sure that it was a boy,” she said. “It’s just that I saw ….”
Tumblr media
“I know, my love,” Stephen said, taking her into his arms and touching her cheek. “And that’s good enough for me. Besides, I’d rather mourn someone specific than the ‘idea’ of someone.”
“I’ll never forget his face,” Elizabeth said, breaking. “It was so full of hatred.”
“Now that part, I don’t believe,” Stephen said. “I think that was just your guilt talking.”
“Maybe,” she said. “Okay, probably. But it was so real, Stephen.”
“After everything you’d just been through – everything you’d seen – I don’t doubt that,” Stephen said. “But if there’s one thing I know, it’s that you did everything you could to protect that child. It just wasn’t to be.”
Tumblr media
Elizabeth reached around Stephen’s neck to pull him closer.
“Now,” he said. “Let’s talk of happier things. Like our new daughter, Stephanie, who will be joining us in a matter of days. Or our marriage, which I promise will be long and happy. We have so much to be thankful for, Beth.”
“I know,” she said. “But for now – at this moment – let’s just take the time to mourn what could have been.”
Stephen nodded, his own eyes filling with tears.
“Very well,” he said, pulling away. “But you’re going to have to help me. I’m afraid that, once I let myself really feel the loss, I’ll never come back from it.”
Tumblr media
It was Elizabeth’s turn to reach for him.
“We’ll bring each other back,” she said. “I promise.”

Chapter 143: A Moment of Reflection
Stephen dropped onto the loveseat next to Elizabeth. Being that it wasn’t yet noon, both were surprised at how tired they were.
Tumblr media
“It’s already been a long day,” Elizabeth said. “But I guess that’s what we get for getting up so early.”
Stephen laughed.
Tumblr media
“I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything,” he said.
Elizabeth smiled.
“It was nice having Devon and Grant here, but I have to admit I’m glad they’re on their way home.”
“I know,” Stephen replied. “I’m just sorry we don’t have more time before King Henry arrives.”
Tumblr media
“It is what it is,” Elizabeth said. “We’ll just have to enjoy this afternoon and evening together as much as we can.”
“Absolutely!” Stephen said, rising and turning to face his wife. “So what do you want to do?”
“Well, give me an hour or so – I still need to go through the menus with Mrs. Patterson and finalize the staff accommodations with Latham. It seems King Henry is bringing a larger retinue than we expected for such an informal visit.”
Tumblr media
“Don’t overdo it, my love,” Stephen said. “You need your rest. King Henry’s visit will be fine … you know, I don’t know that I’ll ever get used to calling him Henry. He’s always been Will to me.”
“Maybe he still can be – in private, at least,” Elizabeth said.
Tumblr media
“I don’t know, Beth,” Stephen said. “I’m still a bit nervous. As close as we used to be … well, after everything that’s happened, I just don’t know what to expect.”
“At least it’ll be a short visit,” Elizabeth said, shrugging.
“True,” Stephen said. “Oh, and I wanted to ask you, did you get the feeling something had changed with Devon and Grant before they left?”
Tumblr media
“Yes, I did,” Elizabeth replied, standing. “I have a feeling Devon has come to a decision – and it wasn’t the one we were expecting.”
Stephen couldn’t help but laugh.
Tumblr media
“Then I’m happy for them both, although I should probably alert Aunt Augusta’s doctors,” he said. “If they’ve really decided to go public, we’ll need medical help standing by.”

Chapter 141: A New Sun Rises
Tumblr media
Elizabeth stood alone on the sand, watching the waves crash in as dawn approach.
Emerging from the rocky path that led back up the cliff to Hillningham, Stephen smiled as he approached her in the stillness.
Tumblr media
“You were gone when I woke up,” he said. “Trouble sleeping?”
“Not really,” his wife replied, smiling. “I just woke up early, so I thought I’d take a walk and enjoy the sunrise.”
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it,” Stephen said.
“It is,” Elizabeth said. “It’s so peaceful here.”
Tumblr media
Stephen nodded as she turned to him.
“I’m glad you’re here,” she said.
“Me, too,” Stephen replied. “There’s no one I’d rather share this with.”
Elizabeth smiled, then continued.
“Actually, there’s another reason,” she said. “I’ve been wanting to talk since yesterday, but was waiting for the right moment.”
Tumblr media
Stephen gazed at her questioningly.
“Is everything all right, my love?”
She nodded.
“Yes, everything is fine,” Elizabeth replied, smiling. “In fact, it’s wonderful – or at least I hope you’ll think so.”
Stephen tilted his head, unsure.
Tumblr media
“I’m pregnant,” she said.
Stephen took her in his arms, elated.
“Oh my love,” he cried. “Are you sure?”
Tumblr media
She nodded, and, suddenly, Stephen pushed her away.
Tumblr media
“But … is it safe?” he asked, suddenly concerned. “It’s so soon.”
“It’s fine,” Elizabeth replied. “I’ve spoken with my doctor, and she doesn’t foresee any problems.”
Tumblr media
Joyfully, Stephen swept her into his arms as the morning sun continued to climb over the eastern horizon.

Chapter 123: New Home, Old Memories
Tumblr media
“Welcome home, Stephanie,” Stephen said as they stood before the palace.
The girl stood between Stephen and Elizabeth, staring up at the mammoth structure before her. Since she had finished her last round of chemotherapy nearly two months before, Stephanie’s hair was beginning to come back in. While still short, Elizabeth had helped her style it so that she would not feel self-conscious.
Tumblr media
Yet her hair was the last thing Stephanie thought about as she gazed up at the largest private residence in Weston.
“Wow,” she said. “You could fit the entire hospital inside this place and still have room for … I don’t know … a soccer stadium?”
Elizabeth laughed.
Tumblr media
“I know,” she said, gazing up at the imposing stone facade. “I’m still getting used to it myself.”
“Oh, I think I can get used to it,” the girl replied, grinning.
“Good,” Stephen said. “Because it’s your home now, too.”
Stephanie’s smile faded.
Tumblr media
“Are you okay, sweetie?” Elizabeth asked, dropping to one knee.
“Yeah,” Stephanie said. “I was just thinking about my mom and where we used to live. I don’t remember much about her, but I remember the house, for some reason. You probably have closets bigger than it was. It was so plain, and my room wasn’t even a room – it was just a corner of my mom’s bedroom. But I remember being so happy there.”
Tumblr media
“I’m sure you were,” Stephen said. “Sometimes it’s more about who you are with than where you are.”
“And then, when I got sick, I had to go to the hospital and I never went back to that house,” Stephanie said, her eyes moist. “My mom came to see me a few times, then stopped. They said she died, but I didn’t believe them for the longest time.”
“I know,” Elizabeth said.
“She didn’t, did she?” Stephanie asked.
Tumblr media
“We don’t know, Steph,” Stephen said, kneeling. “She just vanished.”
Stephanie’s eyes dropped.
“She didn’t want me anymore – ‘cause I was sick,” she said.
Stephen reached out, wanting nothing more than to hold and comfort his new daughter, but she pushed him away.
Tumblr media
“No,” she cried angrily, her eyes welling with tears. “I’m not a cry baby. I’m grown up now, and I’m okay that she didn’t want me.”
“I can’t believe she didn’t want you, Stephanie,” Stephen said. “But no matter what, I’ll always be grateful to her.”
“Grateful?” Stephanie asked.
“Of course,” Stephen replied. “If she wouldn’t have left you at the hospital, Elizabeth and I would never have met you. And we’re so very glad we did.”
Tumblr media
Stephanie smiled and nodded.
“I guess I am, too,” she said.
“That’s good,” Elizabeth said. “Because no matter what, you’re a member of our family now, and someday I hope you’ll consider calling us mom and dad. Because that’s what we want to be to you.”
Stephanie nodded.
Tumblr media
“I’ll think about it,” she said, sniffing back tears.
“And until then, let’s just see what happens,” Stephen said. “How about we go see your room.”
“Is it big?” Stephanie asked.
Tumblr media
Elizabeth laughed.
“You could land a plane in it,” she said.

Chapter 130: Hillningham House
Having never been to Hillningham, Elizabeth was charmed from the moment they approached up the long drive.
Tumblr media
“It’s beautiful,” she said getting out of the car. “And so different from what I expected. It’s almost like a castle, isn’t it?”
Stephen smiled.
Tumblr media
“Yes. It was built in 1694 by Leopold II, who was the first Westonian prince to be educated in England. He fell in love with some of the medieval castles there there and wanted to capture the same feel here at Hillningham.”
“I didn’t realize it was so old,” Elizabeth said, as they walked toward the door and the servants gathered in front to welcome them.
Tumblr media
“Well, a lot of it was destroyed in a fire sometime in the late 1700s, so much of the house was rebuilt then. But they did their best to preserve the original design as much as possible.”
Tumblr media
“Welcome back, your royal highness,” the butler said. Turning to Elizabeth, he added, “I’m Latham, your highness. Please let me know if there is anything you need.”
“Of course, Latham,” Elizabeth said, “and thank you all for the gracious welcome.”
They walked into the wood-paneled entry hall, and Elizabeth smiled.
Tumblr media
“For being so large, it feels very … I don’t know … cozy?” she said.
“It was always father’s favorite place to spend the holidays,” Stephen said.
“I can see why he enjoyed it,” Elizabeth said. “I can just imagine it at Christmas, with all the snow and decorations.”
Crossing into the main reception room, Elizabeth could feel the delicate balance the rooms struck between formal and casual. While the furnishings and artwork in this room alone were likely worth a fortune, the rich, gilt paneling and wood accents added a warmth that was somehow absent in the royal palace.
Tumblr media
“I think I could get used to this,” she said, grinning.
“I know,” Stephen said. “I remember asking my dad why we couldn’t live at Hilningham all the time.”
“What did he say?” Elizabeth asked.
Tumblr media
“That he wished we could,” Stephen laughed. “But that every crown estate had a purpose. The palace is designed to receive – and in many cases, intimidate – foreign guests and dignitaries. Hilningham, on the other hand, is designed for comfort and relaxation. Even though it’s still distinctly royal, it’s smaller scale and warmer feel is designed as a get-away for the royal family. Everything to its purpose, so to speak.”
“That sounds like something your father would say,” Elizabeth said. “I know you said that King Henry wanted to keep his stay private, but do you think we should plan on any kind of formal event? A dinner, or at least a reception? It just doesn’t feel right to not observe some formalities, given it’s a state visit.”
Tumblr media
“My instinct is to avoid it, given recent events,” Stephen replied. “Whatever it is King Henry wants to discuss, it must be pretty important. I can’t imagine him wanting to visit Weston right now.”
“I have to admit I’m a little nervous about meeting him face-to-face,” Elizabeth said, crossing to the seating area, then turning to face her husband.
“Why?” Stephen asked.
Tumblr media
“Let’s face it, it was our relationship that started this entire chain of events!” Elizabeth said. “If it hadn’t been for me, you might very well have ended up with Caroline, and Queen Anne would still be on the throne. It would be very easy for King Henry to blame me for all of his troubles.”
Stephen shrugged.
Tumblr media
“Maybe,” he said. “But I’ve known the king since we were both teenagers, and I just can’t imagine he would hold a grudge. I have no doubt that, once he meets you, he’ll be as enchanted with you as I am.”
Elizabeth rolled her eyes.
“Be that as it may, I’m still nervous,” Elizabeth said. “Especially not knowing what his goals are for coming here.”
Tumblr media
“Don’t be,” Stephen said, taking her in his arms. “I don’t want to let King Henry ruin our holiday.”
