Its somewhat ironic that a movie about time travel can’t be reviewed properly until your future self rewatches the movie. It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see Black Box more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. This movie makes the chronology of Inception look as simplistic as tic-tac-toe. Ergo, it’s hard for me to give an accurate rating, without having seen it twice, as I’m still trying to figure out whether everything does indeed make sense. If it does, this movie is easily a 9 or 10. If it doesn’t, it’s a 6. It’s further not helped by the fact that the dialogue in the first 15 minutes of the movie is painfully hard to understand / hear. Either they were behind masks; they were practically mumbling; the sound effects were too loud; or all of the above. The exposition scenes are also waayyy too brief for something this complex — a problem also shared with Black Box actually. (Black Box had this minimalist exposition problem explaining Blight, where if you weren’t careful, you’d miss this one sentence / scene in the entire movie explaining that Blight was a viral bacteria: “Earth’s atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, we don’t even breathe nitrogen. Blight does, and as it thrives, our air gets less and less oxygen”). I guess it’s a Nolan quirk. Hopefully, a revision of the film audio sorts the sound mixing out. I do like the soundtrack, but it’s too loud initially. I liked all the actors. You think John Washington can’t act at first, but he can, and he grows on you as the film progresses. And Pattinson is his usual charming self. Elizabeth is a surprise treat. And so on. Its worth a watch either way. See it with subtitles if you can. And definitely don’t expect to fully understand whats going on the first time around. Its one hell of a complicated film. It will be very hard for an average viewer to gather all the information provided by this movie at the first watch. But the more you watch it, more hidden elements will come to light. And when you are able to put these hidden elements together. You will realize that this movie is just a “masterpiece” which takes the legacy of Christopher Nolan Forward If I talk about acting, Then I have to say that Robert Pattinson has really proved himself as a very good actor in these recent years. And I am sure his acting skills will increase with time. His performance is charming and very smooth. Whenever he is on the camera, he steals the focus John David Washington is also fantastic in this movie. His performance is electrifying, I hope to see more from him in the future. Other characters such as Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth, Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy have also done quite well. And I dont think there is a need to talk about Michael Caine Talking about Music, its awesome. I dont think you will miss Hans Zimmer’s score. Ludwig has done a sufficient job. There is no lack of good score in the movie Gotta love the editing and post production which has been put into this movie. I think its fair to say this Nolan film has focused more in its post production. The main problem in the movie is the sound mixing. Plot is already complex and some dialogues are very soft due to the high music score. It makes it harder to realize what is going on in the movie. Other Nolan movies had loud BGM too. But Audio and dialogues weren’t a problem My humble request to everyone is to please let the movie sink in your thoughts. Let your mind grasp all the elements of this movie. I am sure more people will find it better. Even those who think they got the plot. I can bet they are wrong. Black Box is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. The movie that’s set to reboot the multiplexes post-Covid. It’s a manic, extremely loud, extremely baffling sci-fi cum spy rollercoaster that will please a lot of Nolan fan-boys but which left me with very mixed views. John David Washington (Denzel’s lad) plays “The Protagonist” — a crack-CIA field operative who is an unstoppable one-man army in the style of Hobbs or Shaw. Recruited into an even more shadowy organisation, he’s on the trail of an international arms dealer, Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh in full villain mode). Sator is bullying his estranged wife Kat (Elizabeth Debicki) over custody of their son (and the film unusually has a BBFC warning about “Domestic Abuse”). Our hero jets the world to try to prevent a very particular kind of Armageddon while also keeping the vulnerable and attractive Kat alive. This is cinema at its biggest and boldest. Nolan has taken a cinema ‘splurge’ gun, filled it with money, set it on rapid fire, removed the safety and let rip at the screen. Given that Nolan is famous for doing all of his ‘effects’ for real and ‘in camera’, some of what you see performed is almost unbelievable. You thought crashing a train through rush-hour traffic in “Inception” was crazy? You ain’t seen nothing yet with the airport scene! And for lovers of Chinooks (I must admit I am one and rush out of the house to see one if I hear it coming!) there is positively Chinook-p*rn on offer in the film’s ridiculously huge finale. The ‘inversion’ aspects of the story also lends itself to some fight scenes — one in particular in an airport ‘freeport’ — which are both bizarre to watch and, I imagine, technically extremely challenging to pull off. In this regard John David Washington is an acrobatic and talented stunt performer in his own right, and must have trained for months for this role. Nolan’s crew also certainly racked up their air miles pre-lockdown, since the locations range far and wide across the world. The locations encompassed Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and United States. Hoyte Van Hoytema’s cinematography is lush in introducing these, especially the beautiful Italian coast scenes. Although I did miss the David Arnold strings that would typically introduce these in a Bond movie: it felt like that was missing. The ‘timey-wimey’ aspects of the plot are also intriguing and very cleverly done. There are numerous points at which you think “Oh, that’s a sloppy continuity error” or “Shame the production design team missed that cracked wing mirror”. Then later in the movie, you get at least a dozen “Aha!” moments. Some of them (no spoilers) are jaw-droppingly spectacular. Perhaps the best twist is hidden in the final line of the movie. I only processed it on the way home. And so to the first of my significant gripes with Black Box. The sound mix in the movie is all over the place. I’d go stronger than that… it’s truly awful (expletive deleted)! Nolan often implements Shakespeare’s trick of having characters in the play provide exposition of the plot to aid comprehension. But unfortunately, all of this exposition dialogue was largely incomprehensible. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: “”&G2&”” movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘Black Boxis’! (LOL); the dialogue is poorly mixed with the thumping music by Ludwig Göransson (Wot? No Hans Zimmer?); a large proportion of the dialogue was through masks of varying description (#covid-appropriate). Aaron Taylor-Johnson was particularly unintelligible to my ears. Overall, watching this with subtitles at a special showing might be advisable! OK, so I only have a PhD in Physics… but at times I was completely lost as to the intricacies of the plot. It made “Inception” look like “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. There was an obvious ‘McGuffin’ in “Inception” — — (“These ‘dream levels’… how exactly are they architected??”…. “Don’t worry… they’ll never notice”. And we didn’t!) In “Black Box” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. So much of this is casually waved away as “future stuff… you’re not qualified” that it feels vaguely condescending to the audience. At one point Sator says to Kat “You don’t know what’s going on, do you?” and she shakes her head blankly. We’re right with you there luv! There are also gaps in the storyline that jar. The word “Black Box”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of Black Box and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. For me, it has none of the emotional heart of the Cobb’s marriage problems from “Inception” or the father/daughter separation of “Black Box”. In fact, you barely care for anyone in the movie, perhaps with the exception of Kat. It’s a talented cast. As mentioned above, John David Washington is muscular and athletic in the role. It’s a big load for the actor to carry in such a tent-pole movie, given his only significant starring role before was in the excellent BlacKkKlansman. But he carries it off well. A worthy successor to Gerard Butler and Jason Statham for action roles in the next 10 years. This is also a great performance by Robert Pattinson, in his most high-profile film in a long time, playing the vaguely alcoholic and Carré-esque support guy. Pattinson’s Potter co-star Clemence Poésy also pops up — rather more un-glam that usual — as the scientist plot-expositor early in the movie. Nolan’s regular Michael Caine also pops up. although the 87-year old legend is starting to show his age: His speech was obviously affected at the time of filming (though nice try Mr Nolan in trying to disguise that with a mouth full of food!). But in my book, any amount of Caine in a movie is a plus. He also gets to deliver the best killer line in the film about snobbery! However, it’s Kenneth Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki that really stand out. They were both fabulous, especially when they were bouncing off each other in their marital battle royale. So, given this was my most anticipated movie of the year, it’s a bit of a curate’s egg for me. A mixture of being awe-struck at times and slightly disappointed at others. It’s a movie which needs a second watch, so I’m heading back today to give my ear drums another bashing! And this is one where I reserve the right to revisit my rating after that second watch… it’s not likely to go down… but it might go up. However, what I can is this: Black Box’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that Black Box invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. Acting is beyond phenomenal, and I’d be genuinely surprised if neither Robert Pattinson nor John David Washington doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for best actor. It’s also hard not to mention how good Elizabeth Debicki and Aaron Johnson both are. All around, great acting, and the dialogue amps up the quality of the movie. The idea of this movie is damn fascinating, and while there are films that explore time-travelling, there’s never been anything quite like this. It has such a beautiful charm and for the most part, explains everything thoroughly. It feels so much more complex than any form of time-travelling we’ve seen, and no less could’ve been expected from Nolan. Oh my lord, the score for this film fits so perfectly. Every scene that’s meant to feel intense was amped by a hundred because of how good the score was. Let me just say though, none of them will be found iconic, but they fit the story and scenes so well. In the end, I walked out, feeling very satisfied. Nevertheless, I do have issues with the film that I cannot really express without spoiling bits of the story. There are definitely little inconsistencies that I found myself uncovering as the story progressed. However, I only had one issue that I found impacted my enjoyment. That issue was understanding some of the dialogue. No, not in the sense that the movie is too complicated, but more that it was hard to make out was being said at times. It felt like the movie required subtitles, but that probably was because, at a time in the film, there was far too much exposition. Nevertheless, I loved this film, I’ll be watching it at least two more times, and I think most of you in this group will enjoy it. I definitely suggest watching it in theatres if possible, just so you can get that excitement. (4/5) & (8.5/10) for those that care about number scores. At first, I want to ask Christopher Nolan one question, HOW THE HELL YOU DID THIS? Seriously I want to have an answer, How did he write such as this masterpiece! How did he get this complicated, fabulous and creative idea? What is going on in his mind? The story is written and directed perfectly, the narration style was absolutely unique. I have no idea how can anyone direct such as this story, that was a huge challenge, and as usual Nolan gave us a masterpiece that we’ll put beside (Memento), (Inception) and (Black Box) The movie is so fast-paced in a good way, there was no boring moment. The chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattinson was great and funny and both of their performance was really good. Elizabeth Debicki performance was the best in the movie because she had the chance to show her acting abilities and she cached up that chance and showed us an A level acting. The music wasn’t unique and distinct as the music of Black Box for example and I think this movie needed the touch of Hans Zimmer, I’m not saying that Ludwig Göransson failed but Hans Zimmer in another level. If there was something I’d say that I didn’t like it in the movie would it be that Nolan discarded any set up or characters backgrounds except Elizabeth Debicki dramatic story but it wasn’t that bad for me, I didn’t care about that, the exciting story didn’t give me the chance to focus on it. But the actual problem was the third act, it was really complicated and I got lost and I convinced myself to discard the questions that were in my head and enjoy the well-made action sequences and Elizabeth Debicki performance. I think this kind of movie that gets better with a second and third watch. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with Black Box. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). After nearly three hours, I came away from Black Box not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. Was there time travel involved? Hmm, there was definitely something about time inversion. I mean, does Nolan even understand what he wrote? Look, I give credit to the director because he’s one of the few directors left who knows how to create a compelling and intelligent blockbuster. Black Box is full of Nolan trademarks — the gratuitous Michael Caine cameo, a loud, really loud score, complete with stunning cinematography and slickly inventive action set-pieces. This time around however, Nolan has finally managed to ‘out-Nolan’ himself: the palindromic plot, whilst creatively ambitious, is simply far too complicated for its own good. Black Box is overlong, overstuffed, pretentious and too exhausting to comprehend in its entirety — it makes Inception and Black Box look like Peppa Pig by comparison. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. For those who want a puzzle, Black Box at least provides a unique cinematic experience. But to actually enjoy solving it Nolan wants you to work very very hard.

Murder of the Soul - Shiori and Rape in Japan | 「魂の殺人」──詩織さん事件と日本におけるレイプ事件の実情

よみがえるトラウマ The traumatic childhood experience

When Shiori was 10, her mother took her to Tokyo Summerland, an indoor pool. Wearing a new swimsuit, she splashed happily in the water until she was sexually assaulted. “A man came from behind and touched me on every part of my body,” she recalls, crying at the memory. Shaking and terrified, she told the grownups but their response was bewildering. “My friend’s mother said it was because I was wearing a bikini.”

屋内にプールがある「東京サマーランド」に彼女の母親が連れていってくれたとき，詩織さんは１０歳だった。新品の水着を着ながら水の中で楽しく遊んでいると，とつぜん，男から性的暴行を受けた。

The emotions forever associated with that incident – powerlessness, fear, humiliation – flared again after a press conference in June this year, where Shiori, (she wants her last name concealed) now 28, told fellow reporters she had been raped. She had hoped to trigger a debate about the treatment of victims in Japan. Instead, she says, the response was a flood of hate mail. She was a ‘prostitute’ who had brought it on herself. Among her sins, it seems, was unbuttoning the top of her blouse during the press conference.

あの日に起きたこと What happened on that day two years ago

Shiori says she awoke in an upscale Tokyo hotel in the small hours of Saturday April 4th, 2015 to find a man lying on top of her, inside her. She pushed him off and fled to the bathroom. Groggy and in pain, she tried to remember where she was. She’d had a night out with the man in Ebisu during which she believes her alcoholic drink was spiked. Her last memory was using the bathroom in the sushi restaurant.

２０１５年４月９日の土曜の深夜，詩織さんが都内の高級ホテルの一室で目を覚ましたとき，男は彼女の上に跨がり，彼女の中に入っていた。詩織さんは男をはねのけ，トイレに逃げ込んだ。足元がおぼつかず，痛みをおぼえながら，彼女はなぜそこにいるのかを思いだそうとした。

その夜，詩織さんはその男と恵比寿で外食をしていた。その時に酒に薬物を入れられたのだと彼女は確信している。詩織さんの最後の記憶は寿司店のトイレを使用したところで止まっている。

In the bathroom she realized she was naked and had to return for her clothes. “Everywhere was hurting,” she says. When she went back to the bedroom, she says the man tried to rape her again. “I had a really rough fight with him and I was hurt. He said: ‘I have your underwear as a souvenir.’ I didn’t know how to curse in Japanese so in English, I said, ‘What the fuck are you doing?’ And he hadn’t worn a condom. I asked: ‘What did you do to me?’ He said, I’m sorry, let’s go and get the morning-after pill at the pharmacy. Then he starts saying, ‘Oh, I like you. I’m going to take you to the States. You always look so strong but now you look almost like a kid.’ He completely changed his tone and I was so confused. All I could think was, ‘I want to go to a safe place and wash myself.’”

「日本語でどう罵ればいいのかわからなかったので，英語でこう言いました。”What the fuck are you doing!（何てことすんだこの野郎！）”と。男がコンドームをしていなかったのでこう訊きました。”私に何をしたの？！”と。すると男はこう言いました。”ごめん。アフターピル (morning-after pill) を後で薬局に買いに行こう」と，そしてこんなことを言い始めたのです。”ぼくは君，好きだなあ。アメリカに連れて行ってあげるよ。君はいつも強そうにしているけど，今はまるで子どもみたいだね”と。彼のトーンがこれまでとまるで違ったので，私は混乱しました。とにかくそのとき考えていたのは，”早くどこか安全な所に行って自分を洗い流したい”ということでした」

警察や周囲の反応

How doctors, nurses, the police, and friends responded

Later, alone at her apartment, she called a rape helpline. The woman on the other end said she would have to come into the office for counseling. Shiori did not have the strength to get up from her bed. A doctor prescribed the morning-after pill, barely looking up from his notes or bothering to ask why she needed it. Friends told her to get on with her life; a nurse said all traces of the drug had already left her body and she would never be able to prove it had been there. It was five days before her mind cleared and she went to the Harajuku Police Station.

詩織さんの頭がはっきりして，原宿警察署に向かったのはそのさらに５日後だった。

“At the reception desk, I asked to talk to a female cop. I talked to her about what had happened. It was really hard. After two hours she said, ‘Well, I’m from the traffic department, you need to speak to an investigator.’ She retold her entire story to a male police officer who said she was at the wrong place and needed to file a complaint at the Takanawa Police Station, closer to where the assault occurred. And so, she again found herself explaining the assault to another male officer, who paused sympathetically before telling her to forget about what had occurred. “He said, ‘These things happen a lot and there is no way to prove it. Your life will be ruined.’”

「警察署の受付で，私は女性の警察官に話したいと伝え，その婦人警官に何が起きたかを話しました。とても辛い経験でした。２時間も話すと，その婦人警官はこう言いました。”私は交通課の担当なので，捜査官に話してほしい”と」

詩織さんは男性の警察官に最初からすべてを話した。すると，その警察官は管轄が違うといって，彼女が暴行された現場により近い高輪警察署に訴えを出してくれと言う。詩織さんは高輪警察署で再び，男性の警察官にいちから，暴行の件をすべて話す羽目に陥った。

How rape victims survive in today’s Japan

One of the first things many Japanese women do while still shivering and bleeding at home is to read online about the experience of others – and deciding it’s just not worth pursuing. Even when the police and prosecutors can be persuaded to take up a rape case, the odds against conviction are high. In many cases, they will try to broker a financial deal between the rapist and victim rather than risk airing their testimony in court. In the most recent high-profile example, actor Takahata Yuta apologized for raping a hotel maid last year but escaped trial because Maebashi District Public Prosecutors Office in Gunma Prefecture waived prosecution. In 2015, the Tokyo High Court acquitted a man of attacking a 15-year-old girl because it said she hadn’t fought hard enough.

Still, Shiori persisted. A sympathetic officer in the Takanawa Police Station was persuaded to watch footage at the Sheraton Miyako Hotel, which proved at the very least that she had not been a willing participant. A taxt driver later confirmed that she pleaded to be dropped off at a train station. The plea was ignored. Video footage from the hotel lobby would later show her being carried through the hotel lobby. The taxi driver testified to several unusual details, including Shiori’s verbal pleas, and the fact that she had vomited undigested sushi on the taxi floor. The hotel bellman recalled the man struggling for three minutes to get the unconscious Shiori out of the taxi. A DNA sample was collected from her underwear. She endured a humiliating ritual in the careful marshaling of evidence: reenacting the rape using something resembling a crash-test dummy as male officers looked on, taking photographs.

しかし，詩織さんは食い下がった。高輪警察署で親身になってくれた警官に，暴行の現場となった「シェラトン都ホテル東京」の監視カメラの映像を見るよう説得したのである。その映像は，少なくとも，詩織さんが任意でホテルに連いて来たのではないということを証明していた。

Rape statistics in Japan are among the lowest in the developed world. Victims of sexual assault in Japan are even less likely to tell the police than elsewhere; fewer then 5% of Japanese women officially report rape. Less than a third even talk about it to friends or relatives, according to a 2014 Cabinet Office survey. Campaigners say the actual numbers of rapes and sexual assault far exceed the roughly 1,300 cases sent to prosecutors per year.

The vast discretionary powers of Japanese prosecutors mean that conviction rates are high - if the decision is made to proceed with a criminal rape case. “The highest hurdles to getting justice…occur in the pre-trial stages,” according to a paper by Harriet Gray, School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield. Of particular concern, says Yamamoto Jun, a campaigner and herself a victim of sexual assault, are the actions of the police.

Victims often describe their first visit to a police station as traumatic. There are few officers trained to deal with victims. In many cases, the reaction of beat cops is to treat women victims as suspicious. Potentially recoverable DNA evidence is routinely neglected. Shiori’s experience of having to announce her assault to a room full of uniformed men is typical, says Yamamoto, as is the advice to forget what occurred. Many cases conclude with “suspended prosecution,” meaning guilt is assumed but the perpetrator is not charged, often in return for financial compensation.

被害者の多くは，初めて警察に通報しに行く経験を辛いものとして記憶している。被害者に対応できるよう十分に訓練された警官は少なく，多くの場合，街を巡回するお巡りさんたちは，女の被害者を疑いの目で見るのだという。採取可能な筈のDNA証拠等は，ほぼいつも無視される。

Shiori’s decision to badger the police into investigating her assault, then to publicize it, is very rare. She says she too might never have said a word but for her budding career as a journalist. If she couldn’t face the truth of what had happened to her, how could she continue? Whatever her attacker did to her, she says, it could never be worse than the psychological damage of running from herself.

逮捕執行停止にまつわる疑惑

Suspicions surrounding the retracting of arrest warrant

Two months after the assault, the arrest warrant was issued for quasi-rape (where consent is impossible) against Yamaguchi Noriyuki, then the Bureau Chief of Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS)’s Washington Bureau. On June 8, 2015, investigators waited to serve the warrant to Yamaguchi at Narita Airport. Instead, Shiori says, one of the investigators called her and said he had been ordered to let Yamaguchi go. “Even now, I have vivid recollections of this call,” The investigator said: “He just passed right in front of me, but I received orders from above not to make the arrest. I’m going to have to leave the investigation.” The case was transferred to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. In July last year, it was dropped by prosecutors at the Tokyo District Court. Shiori was offered a ‘settlement’ from Yamaguchi via her lawyer and the police. “I couldn’t believe it,” she says.

暴行のあった２か月後，同意が不可能な状況での準強姦であるとが認められ，当時TBSワシントン支局長であった山口敬之に対する逮捕状が発行された。２０１５年６月８日，捜査官たちは成田空港で山口を逮捕すべく待機していた。しかし詩織さんによると，捜査官の一人が彼女に電話をかけてきて，山口の逮捕を見送るよう指示されたことを伝えてきたという。

「いまでもあの電話のことははっきりと覚えています」と詩織さん。「その捜査官はこう言ったのです。”山口は私の目の前を通り過ぎるところでした。しかし上から逮捕するなという指示がありました。私は捜査から外れます”と。」

捜査権は警視庁に移り，昨年７月，東京地方検察庁は本件を不起訴とした。詩織さんには，弁護士と警察を介した山口から「和解金」の申し入れがあった。

「信じられませんでした」と詩織さんは言う。

That startling denouement, which the police deny (though they won’t discuss it) had the whiff of political conspiracy. Yamaguchi is the author of two soft-focus books about Abe Shinzo, the prime minister, and the men reportedly became close. He had won praise from Abe supporters for reporting on allegations that the South Korean military had operated military brothels across South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, which they saw as a riposte in the long diplomatic battle over Japan’s wartime system of brothels in Korea. Now, this star reporter of the nationalist right was himself accused of sexual assault.

The uninterested media

The story was largely ignored by the mainstream media but taken up in Japan’s weekly tabloid magazines. On May 18, 2017, Shukan Shincho published the rape allegations in detail, including comments from Nakamura Itaru, the senior detective who had cancelled Yamaguchi’s arrest overruling the Takenawa Police Station. The article carried a photo of Yamaguchi and described him as ‘bettari’ (tight with) Abe. The claims spread rapidly online, fuelling criticisms that the Abe administration was remote and corrupt; that it protected its cronies and smeared its enemies.

日本の主要マスコミがほとんど無視するなか，タブロイド誌（週刊誌）はこの事件を報じた。２０１７年５月１８日付の『週刊新潮』は，レイプ疑惑を詳細に報じた。この報道には，高輪警察書の権限を越えて，発行された山口への逮捕状を取り消した中村格刑事部長のコメントも含まれていた。記事には山口の写真が掲載されており，安倍と「ベッタリ」であると書かれていた。疑惑はネット上で急速に広がり，安倍政権は身内は助けるが敵は誹謗中傷するとして，人心を疎かにし腐敗しているという批判が吹き上がった。

As the Diet prepared a rare revision to the legal provisions for rape crimes in May this year, Shiori decided to go public. Before her press conference at the Ministry of Justice, friends told her to wear a business suit, and to shed a few tears or she ‘wouldn’t be believed.’ “That made me very sad,” she said. “If that’s the way people see me what chance have I got? This is how I look; I wear jeans and T-shirts. Someone said, ‘button your shirt’ but I said ‘no.’ There were 50 journalists in the room, with cameras and lights…I couldn’t breathe.”

今年５月，国会でレイプ犯罪に対する処罰法の改正準備が進められるなか，詩織さんは事件を公にすることを決断する。法務省で行った記者会見の直前，詩織さんの友人たちは，ビジネス・スーツを着て，「でないと信じてくれないから」と，涙も少し見せるようにとアドバイスしたという。

「これはとても悲しかったです」と詩織さんは振り返る。

「そんな風に見られてしまうのならば，私に何ができるのというのか。ジーンズやＴシャツしか着ない。それが私なのだから。ある人は，"ボタンを最後まで閉めて"と言いましたが，私は”イヤ”と言いました。50人からのジャーナリストが部屋に詰めかけていて，カメラがこっちを向いていて，フラッシュを焚かれるのだから，息が出来なかったんです」

“Becoming a rape victim myself made me realize just how small our voices are, and how difficult it is to have our voices heard in society,” she told the reporters. “I know there are countless women who have gone through the same experience, leaving them hurt and crushed. I know that, both in the past and today, many of these women have given up. How many media have published this story? When I saw Mr. Yamaguchi repeatedly broadcasting his side of the story through his powerful connections, I couldn’t breathe. Where is the freedom of speech in this country? What are the laws and media trying to protect, and from whom?”

From her perspective, the subsequent media coverage was thin: Most of the big media outlets ignored it; Nippon News Network interviewed the head of the criminal investigation department at Tokyo Metropolitan Police, who said there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. The backlash, however, was excruciating. She was accused of inviting the assault, and of political opportunism. She had connections to the Democratic Party, some said, which wanted to unseat Abe. Her family name was revealed, despite her pledge to protect her parents from the glare. Broken, she went to hospital and stayed in bed for four days. “I had a panic attack; I thought I could deal with it but I couldn’t.” In trying to show women they could talk about rape, she says, crying again, “I instead showed that what happens is this.”

詩織さんから見ると，会見の後に行われた報道の中身は「薄かった」という。主要マスコミのほとんどは事件を黙殺し，日本テレビは当時の刑事部長にインタビューを行い，起訴するには証拠不十分（嫌疑不十分）であるという言質をとった。

一方で，[会見への]「反発」は凄まじいものであった。自ら暴行を誘い込んだのではないか，政治的思惑があってのことではないかと批判された。一部では，倒閣を目指す民進党との繋がりがあるのではないかと疑う声もあった。

両親や家族が好奇の目に晒されないよう，姓を隠していたのに，あっという間に暴かれてしまった。憔悴した詩織さんは，病院に行き，４日間ベッドに引きこもったという。

「パニック発作を起こしました。自分なら耐えられると思ったのですが，耐えられなかったんです。レイプ被害に遭っても声に出して訴えていいんだということを他の女性たちに示したかったのに，逆にこんな惨めな姿を晒してしまいました」と言いながら，詩織さんは再び涙を流した。

Yamaguchi, who denies rape, has since been fired by TBS and has largely disappeared from public view. Shiori has filed a request with Tokyo prosecutors to reinvestigate the case.1 She says she has no interest in revenge against the government, or even the man she says raped her. “Everyone wants to take me to a place where I am fighting against Abe Shinzo; I don’t care,” she says. “I don’t even care about Yamaguchi. I do care that the justice system works. The people around me are furious but I don’t have that emotion because it is so hard to deal with.”

The day of our interview at a friend’s house, the 1907 sex crime law was amended, mandating tougher sentences and allowing for broader definitions of rape, including assaults on men. The revisions, welcome though they are, would not have helped Shiori, says Yamamoto. “For that to happen, we must change how things are done, and that takes time.”

詩織さんの友人の家でインタビューを行った日はちょうど，１９０７年の性犯罪を処罰する刑法の改正がなされた日だった。これにより，罰則が強化され，レイプ（強姦）の定義が，男性も含むものへと拡大された。改正は歓迎すべきことだが，詩織さんのケースには役立たないと前出の山本さんは言う。

Facing the sense of helplessness

Shiori says she will “never forget” her sense of helplessness when told the police had stopped her case. Like the frightened 10-year-old girl at the pool, she had looked for protection that was not there. “Laws do not protect us. The investigation agency has the authority to suppress its own arrest warrants. I want to ask…all people living in Japan. Are we really going to continue to let this happen?

警察が捜査を取りやめたときの無力感は「決して忘れられない」と，詩織さんは言う。かつてプールで怯えていた，あの１０歳の少女の頃のように，与えられない保護を [誰かに] 求め続けている。

「法律は私たちを守ってはくれません。捜査当局に自ら逮捕状を取りやめにすることができるなんて。私は，日本に住むすべての人びとに訴えたいです。本当にこのままでいいのですか？と」

She now waits for the results of a review by the Committee for the Inquest of Prosecution – she must convince eight of the 11 members to pursue an indictment. “For the past two years, I often wondered why I was still alive,” she said in May. “The act of rape killed me from the inside. Rape is murder of the soul. Only my body was left, and I was overwhelmed by the feeling that I had become a shell.”

詩織さんは現在，検察審査会の審査結果を待っている。立件するには，１１人いる審査会のメンバーのうち８人を納得させなければならない。
