5 Minutes with actress Gwendoline Taylor

Effortlessly stylish New Zealand born actress Gwendoline Taylor is rubbing shoulders with Hollywood super-stars…..whilst staying true to her roots and rocking out Trelise Cooper on the red carpet! Her biggest project to date has been Spartacus: War of the Damned, where she played a young slave named Sibyl. Closer to home roles include characters on; Go Girls, Nothing Trivial and Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business.

Taking 5 minutes out of her busy and demanding schedule, Gwendoline spends time with RemilyStyle, talking about her career, fashion and offering up her key style advice.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

Auditioning, mostly! However, I have just been approached by ‘Silent Assembly’ to come onboard as their NZ brand ambassador, which I am very excited about. Check them out at www.silentassembly.com

What do you find the hardest trials and tribulations of your chosen industry?

Oh boy, where do I start?! Acting is not the most viable option for a career in NZ (or anywhere else, for that matter). The truth is I need to hold down a day job to pursue my passions - and acting is just one of these. Most people who have seen me onscreen assume that I am acting fulltime. To be honest, I actually work behind the scenes in TV more than I’m on it… but I studied post production, so I feel totally at home doing what I do. As long as I’m immersed in the industry, I’m happy.

Who has been your favourite character to play and why?

That’s tough. I would probably have to say Sibyl from Spartacus - I spent the most time with her, plus it was my first full-time gig, so it was hard not to get attached to her.

What are your words - of - wisdom out there for aspiring actresses?

Work begets work. The more you work, the more you work!

How do you decide what outfit to wear for an audition?

I’ve had a lot of practice at this! The key thing is to keep it simple. Unless the brief specifically calls for a costume, a nice pair of jeans and fitted singlet tends to work in my favour. Something that brings out my eyes.

What has been your favourite red carpet outfit that you have worn?

I was lucky enough to borrow a gorgeous dress from Trelise Cooper for the Spartacus premiere last year. Wearing a NZ designer on the red carpet in LA was a special moment for me.

To you, what is the epitome of style?

Effortless, understated glamour. French women seem to pull this off particularly well.

If you could sum up your personal style in three words….what would it be?

The ‘off-duty’ look.

This spring/ summer season, what are the key looks you are most excited about?

I’d quite like to get a playsuit! They look fun.

Finally….have you any hot- tips for summer styling advice?

Invest in a floppy straw hat - and if there’s any advice you need for summer, it’s sun protection.
