In questa storia di vittime non ce n’è solo una. In tutto sono venti, tre italiani, sette tedeschi, cinque belgi, due polacchi, due austriaci e un olandese. Nessun ferito o sopravvissuto. Muoiono il 3 febbraio 1998, il giorno in cui per una coincidenza “bizzarra” la corte di Cassazione pronunciava la sentenza definitiva sull’aereo militare caduto sull’istituto tecnico-commerciale Salvemini di Casalecchio di Reno, in provincia di Bologna, il 6 dicembre 1990. Negli ultimi istanti di vita gli sciatori, gli escursionisti e coloro che stanno lavorando si trovano sospesi a circa 150 metri dal suolo perché sono all’interno della cabina di una funivia, quella del Cermis, in Val di Fiemme. A ucciderli non è un incidente all’impianto, ma il passaggio di un aereo militare americano, un Grumman EA-6B Prowler, al cui comando c’è un ufficiale dei marines, il capitano Richard Ashby, che era decollato per un volo di addestramento dalla base di Aviano alle 14.36. Con il primo capitano ci sono a bordo altri tre parigrado: il navigatore Joseph Schweitzer, l’addetto ai sistemi di guerra elettronica William Rancy e l’addetto ai sistemi di guerra elettronica Chandler Seagraves. Sul fatto che il mezzo stia volando troppo basso si è d’accordo fin dall’inizio, ma cosa sia effettivamente accaduto e in base a quale dinamica si sia arrivati a quella strage non è chiaro subito. E allora i magistrati ottengono l’immediato sequestro dell’aereo, che le autorità statunitensi stavano già smontando facendo temere di voler farlo sparire. A provocare tutti quei morti è stata la coda del Prowler che trancia il cavo della funivia e dunque a processo ci dovrebbe finire chi era ai comandi. Ma una prima doccia fredda giunge quando si ripesca una convenzione Nato del 1951 in base alla quale i militari americani non possono essere processati e giudicati in Italia, ma quella competente è una corte statunitense. Inutile dire che le conseguenze penali per i quattro ufficiali furono molto meno pesanti rispetto al massacro compiuto. E anche i risarcimenti ai familiari, inizialmente fissati a 40 milioni di dollari da parte del governo di Washington, sono stati una pena infinita, ricaduta sulle spalle delle amministrazioni della provincia autonoma di Trento e dello Stato italiano e solo successivamente rimborsate in parte (per il 75%) da oltre oceano. Solo anni dopo, nel 2009, il pilota Joseph Schweitzer ha detto al National Geographic ciò che sarebbe effettivamente accaduto. Ed ecco in sostanza, secondo quanto riportatodall’Espresso: Ridevano e filmavano le montagne, il «paesaggio splendido» del lago di Garda. Mentre il loro aereo violava le regole, volando troppo basso e troppo veloce, loro giravano un video ricordo delle Alpi: un souvenir per il pilota, all’ultima missione prima di tornare negli Stati Uniti. E poco dopo sono andati a tranciare la funivia del Cermis, uccidendo venti persone. Ed ha aggiunto Schweitzer: «Ho bruciato la cassetta. Grumman EA-6B Prowler, BuNo 159910, of VMAQ-2 Detachment Y, crash landed on flight deck of USS Nimitz, off the Florida coast, killing 14 crewmen and injuring 45 others (some reports say 42, some 48). The crash was the result of the aircraft missing the last arresting cable, while ignoring a wave-off command. Two Grumman F-14 Tomcats struck and destroyed (BuNos. 161138 and 160385), 3 F-14s, 9 LTV A-7 Corsair IIs, 3 S-3A Vikings, 1 Grumman A-6 Intruder and 1 SH-3 Sea King damaged. Forensic testing conducted found that several members of the deceased flight deck crew tested positive for marijuana (the officers on board the aircraft were never tested, claimed one report). The responsibility for the accident was placed on the deck crew. The official naval inquiry stated that the accident was the result of drug abuse by the enlisted crewmen of the Nimitz, despite the fact that every death occurred during the impact of the crash and not one member of the deck crew was killed fighting the fire. As a result of this incident, President Ronald Reagan instituted a "Zero Tolerance" policy across all of the armed services-which started the mandatory drug testing of all US service personnel. In another report, however, the Navy stated that pilot error, possibly caused by an excessive dosage of brompheniramine, a cold medicine, in the blood of pilot Marine 1st Lt. Steve E. White, of Houston, Texas, "may have degraded the mental and physical skills required for night landings." The report described brompheniramine as "a common antihistamine decongestant cold medicine ingredient." "Last October , Rep. Joseph P. Addabbo, (D-N.Y.) said that an autopsy conducted on the pilot's body disclosed up to 11 times the recommended dosage of a cold remedy in his system." This report seems to belie the above account that no testing was done on the flight crew.
