Zumbro Bend/Three Desiring Bodies Opens at Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN
Zumbro Bend/Three Desiring Bodies
Rochester Art Center
Opening Saturday, November 18, 1-4 pm. Artist Talk 2 pm.
Sinuous Bend Installation /Onofrio Gallery
 Gel Medium Lab/Davies Gallery
 Bait Shop/Nook Gallery
 Sound Compositions by Chooch Karton
In Zumbro Bend: Three Desiring Bodies, Minneapolis based visual artist Pete Driessen installs three separate site-specific works, each a different abstracted fork in the river ecosystem. Titled after the South Fork Zumbro River that winds around the Rochester Art Center, the artist illuminates meandering sociopolitical variants on the river as creative life force, terrain erosion and deposition, land extraction and water channeling.
Through the language of painting, form, and space, Driessen investigates river system topology, land erosion and sediment deposition structures, and the animate quality of flowing water systems. The Zumbro River, a Mississippi River tributary with three separate forks, offers three exhibit positions with distinct material situations.
The first fork, Zumbro Bend, reflects upon the river environments meandering erosion and deposition, with wood, limestone, and mixed media painting. The gallery floor serves as flood plain, with work arranged around the curvilinear structure of a river bend. In the second Gel Medium Lab fork, the artist experiments with gloss acrylic gel medium positioning the river via our human bodily connections to innate desire, creative production, and reproduction qualities. The third Bait Shop fork nostalgically reflects upon the artists locational identity within the water culture of the Minnesota & Upper Midwest through recreational and tinkering structures.
Amidst the duration of the exhibition, Driessen will present a choreographed sound performance with Pooch Karton, writer and artist dialogue, and a limited-edition artist’s book release.
Shows Runs November 18, 2023-March 24, 2024

Invader Zim in acrylic. I had to make each color and didn't have a black. I used the gloss gel medium to " sheer" out the pink and gray.

Acrylic Binder in Lahore
Acrylic binder, also known as acrylic medium, is a substance used in the creation of acrylic paints and as an additive to modify the properties of acrylic paints. Acrylic paints are made by mixing pigments with an acrylic binder, which acts as the vehicle that holds the pigments together and allows them to adhere to various surfaces.
Acrylic gels are thick and viscous substances that can be added to acrylic paint to increase its body or thickness. They come in different consistencies, from soft to heavy gels, allowing artists to achieve various textures and effects in their artwork. Acrylic mediums are fluid additives that can be mixed with acrylic paint to alter its properties. There are different types of mediums available, such as matte medium (reduces glossiness), gloss medium (increases glossiness), glazing medium (improves transparency and extends drying time), and more.
Retarders are additives that slow down the drying time of acrylic paint, giving artists more time to work with the paint and blend colors. While not a traditional binder, acrylic varnishes are clear protective coatings that can be applied over dried acrylic paintings to protect them from dust, UV light, and other environmental factors. The versatility of acrylic binders allows artists to experiment with various techniques and effects, such as impasto (thick textures), glazing (layering translucent colors), and more. Acrylic paints and binders are popular among artists for their fast-drying nature, water solubility, and ability to create both transparent and opaque effects.
Acrylic binders have gained popularity in the art world due to their ease of use, wide range of applications, and compatibility with various surfaces such as canvas, paper, wood, and more.

Developing work in progress - layer #5
Added a new layer! This one consisted of charcoal and then another black wash of watered down black paint. I decided to draw with the charcoal on the canvas when I had put it flat on the table instead of while it hung on the wall. It was quite interesting because I could only just reach the centre of the painting when I bent over it - I did feel slightly more restricted having to reach over the canvas so I don't know if I would do it again but I think it helped me to be able to spread my marks out more evenly on the canvas instead of maybe focusing more energy on the top of the painting when it's hung up in front of me.
I'm also starting to get a bit worried about my hands because when I spread the paint layers and black wash around, my hands are starting to get cuts and it's rubbing them raw. All of the dried bits of paint are quite sharp and it creates a lot of friction rubbing my hands around the canvas every second day. It also doesn't help when I have to wash them multiple times on top of rubbing them raw when I make work - they're not healing and I don't want to get too many chemicals or charcoal powder in any wounds. But I love the tactility and connection to my materials that using my hands allows me to have so I'm a bit unsure what to do... maybe I need to get some sort of gloves? Something to think about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also went and got some new materials to test out like liquid acrylic black paint, more gel medium and a varnish/gloss finish medium and some more black paint...
I'm going to see if the liquid acrylic mixed with modeling paste will be dark enough to use on my painting - might make the black paint go a bit further? Something to test out...
The last photo is of the glazing medium drying on a spot I tested it out on... I think so far it has a lot of potential but It's quite expensive and I'd need it in a bigger quantity so I'll have to try it out a little bit more and see what I think.

Manual Nail File Guide
The most common manual nail files are made of cardboard and usually have different grits on the sides. Here are a few common nail files.
Tumblr media
Wooden nail files: These are similar to emery boards, but they are made of wood instead of cardboard. They are also available in different whole grains. Metal nail files: These manual nail files are made of stainless steel and can be a bit rough for natural nails. They are more suitable for manicures. Sponge Nail Files: These are extra thick pad manual nail files with no paper backing. They are available in a variety of grits and can be sterilized and sanitized. Choosing the best manual nail file for you depends on your needs. After talking about the types of nail files, let's talk about the number of nail files. Generally, there are four different sizes of nail files.
Tumblr media
Rasp (80-100 grit): For shaping acrylic or gel nail enhancements and filing down thickness and length These manual nail files have fewer grit particles, so they are very abrasive manual nail files and are not recommended for natural nails. Medium Grain File (180 grit): For lightly polished dips, acrylic or gel enhancements, and for filling free edges of natural nails These nail files are less abrasive because they contain more grit particles. But like rasps, they're not recommended for polishing natural nails. Fine Grain File (240-600 grit): For smoothing and finishing work on dips, acrylics, wraps and gels. They are also great for removing natural oils and invisible cuticles. These manual nail files are minimally abrasive and soft enough to gently polish the natural nail bed without thinning and causing nail damage. Ultra-fine grit file (600-2400 grit): Used to create high gloss and manicure effects on natural nails, making the nails look like they've been top-coated When you put your fingers on these nail files, they are smooth to the touch. They are also used to prepare the surface of your natural nails for polishing, shining, finishing and removing ridges and stains.   Yaqin Nail Drill Bit Factory 13 Years of Production Experience Professional Manufacturer of Nail Drills and Nail Drill Bits, Private Packaging, Best-selling in 50+ Countries, Many Product Styles and Colors, Support ODM/OEM, Can Be Purchased Centrally. I wanted to make a dragon using the colors of the plants I see here in the spring, and this is the result! I’m really pleased with how she came out.
This one has glass cabochon eyes, which I detailed with inkjet plastic, alcohol ink, and shiny foil paper. Fiber is all acrylic, not intentionally this time but the colors I wanted were in my yarn stash. Her horns are made of Lumina clay, colored with chalk pastels (my new love), with a gloss glaze and blue interference pigment, so when the light hits them just right there’s a blue sheen. She also has a tiny lily, also made of Lumina and colored with chalk pastels. The sticky up bits in the middle are thread hardened with PVA glue, with tiny blobs of acrylic gel medium on the ends. I’ve never made flowers before, I think it turned out pretty good for a new technique!

"Highgate", part 1. Collage, gesso, semi-gloss medium, acrylic paint, oil pastels, stamping, gel pens.
"Here comes your heart attack
Starless and bible black
And here is the endgame
Lightning flicks down again
Back in the wilderness
And inside of the sanctum
In the flutter of an eye
In the holler of a gull
Light streams through incisions
You lie down in the weeds
Sky ripping at the seams
You draw blood from the reins
And pulling out your jackknife
At lifelike figurines" -Shearwater, "Highgate"

Wildes Leben (Wild life), Carola Vahldiek
My paintings are colorful, expressive, impulsive, radiant, dynamic, free intuitive, joyful creations. I always work truly right out of my heart and soul and the lights and colors I am feeling inside. So every piece is a vibrant intense aesthetically pleasing experience which brings radiant lightness to life and into your rooms. This painting is made on a thick paper/ thin cardboard for artist. I used Lascaux Gouache colors and different other mediums, espacially acrylic interference colors and pieces of glass. Some acrylic skins I made before were the point of start. I wanted to create a lively shimmering piece... The painting is signed on the front. On the back I note the number of the artwork and its title. With the painting you will get a certificate of authenticity. The artwork is photographed with a digital camera. The colors can differ slightly from the original for various reasons (monitor setting, quality of the graphics card, etc.). This painting is also equipped with different gloss effects, which cannot be reproduced sufficiently on photos. The processed glass particles as well as the gloss gel provide lively gloss effects, as does the metallic Lascaux gouache. Depending on the incidence of light, the painting therefore appears differently.

The surface was coated with acrylic gel medium and gloss varnish as protective layer over dust and UV lights. The back is tightly strung with wires and ready to be bung vertically or horizontally. Hey KL! I have a friend who’s looking to do a collage project but she doesn’t know what glue to use so the pictures don’t get all wavy. I of course thought of you and your lovely collages. Do you have a glue recommendation for her?
Oh yes! Gloss acrylic medium, because it dries clear, doesn’t change color with age, and is waterproof. I use the Golden brand because it’s easy to get at Michaels.
